Today was my birthday and I've wanting to check out Barrio Queen forever so friend picked me up and we headed over. We arrived right as they opened and I was pleasantly surprised to already see quite a few people waiting. The parking lot is large and there is outdoor seating. I loved the photo ops outside with the art on the walls. I already knew I was going to love it. My friend raves about their guacamole so of course they was on top of the list of what to order. We were greeted right away and taken to our table. It was large and near a window with nice light and room for all the food I was going to try. Ha ha Our server was amazing the entire visit and we never had to ask for a thing. The menu was great and offers something for everyone. It was so hard to choose what I wanted because everything sounded so dang good. We started with the table side guacamole. It was cool to have him bring out the cart and make it at the table. My friends little boy loved it. The pomegranate added took it over the top. It was so fresh and delicious. I ordered the Chile Verde entree that came with black beans and rice and of course tortillas. My friend had a burrito enchilada style while her son had chicken fingers and fruit. Everything came out quickly and was so full of flavor and I was happy. We then decided to order a Chile Verde Tamale and a queso birria taco . I was so full, but dammed if I wasn't going to try them lol. Let me tell you that it was THE BEST decision I made all day. The taco was juicy, had insane flavor and the consommé put it over the top. The cheese was melted perfectly and just the right amount of onion. The tamale was seriously probably the best I'd ever had. The meat pieces were great size, sauces perfect and even plated well. My vision was skewed looking through a lens of the past. The food at Barrio Queen is not how I remember it post Chef Silvanas departure. It has been popularized, hyperbolized, and franchised and has adopted a restaurant feel. I ordered shrimp tacos. The taco shell was tiny and the fixings were stacked. Came here for the first time last night and it was disappointing. The salsa that came with the chips was almost flavorless but the house-made tortilla chips were delightful. One of us ordered the spicy margarita which was VERY spicy (he was warned) which is not for the faint of heart. The second margarita was a cucumber-lime mixture that was delightful. Unfortunately, both drinks were very small and very pricey. I ordered the taco trio which included the Pescado, the Aztec, and the pulled pork. The fish taco was undercooked and inedible. The other two were underwhelming. Way too much pickled onion and little else. Hubby ordered the Aztec burrito which was decent at best. Both dishes were lukewarm. On a whole, nothing here was worth a second trip for us. A bit too pricey for the disappointing food. Maybe we hit them at a bad night. What a disappointment! Apples to apples we would drive to Desert Ridge every time after this visit. A reservation for 2 we were sat at a table for 6. Our server, Pam, seriously is in the wrong business. She made our whole dinner a joke! Our appetizers never came out before our entrees arrived so we just took them to go. She never came by to see if we would like anything and it was a Friday so they lost money on a second or third cocktail for sure! We also had a to go order that was incorrect but too late now. Barrio Queen is a very popular spot, there always seems to be a wait, so we figured that meant it would be good. Our wait for a table was short, our server was friendly and attentive. The chips and salsa were very good. The menu had a lot of options. I chose a "house special" the Arizona Burrito. My husband got the Enchilada Trio. The main ingredient in both entrees was salt. You couldn't distinguish a different taste between the 3 enchiladas, it was just salty. Between that and the really loud noise level inside it just wasn't a great experience. read more

Absolutely loving this new location! Because its so close to me duh! But really... Barrio Queen is such a great place no matter what locating you visit and I'm ust so excited to have a new date night place on the West Side. On my last visit here I finally tried the Queso and I can now say I'm already craving it! Also loving the addition of Birria to the menu; Tried it in a taco and it was perfect. I also can never forget my very favorite spicy margarita, the El Pepino Loco. This new location is huge with 2 big patio areas, 2 bars with bar seating, and of course big dinning area. Great carne asada burrito! I had the carne asada burrito. Recommend! Meat is tender and flavorful and the black beans are fantastic. The tortilla is soft and pliable - nearly perfect. Also, like the rice they serve. The chips and salsa are different than the standard fare. Thick crispy homestyle chips with a flavorful, but not overly spicy salsa. The salsa is a bit watery in texture, but if you can get some on your chip, it tastes great. The atmosphere is nice. They don't crowd you together, which is a nice change. They have some good tables for groups of 6. Also, nice that it is not too loud in here. Server was cheerful, helpful and attentive. Inside this place is cool, good music and nice ambiance. Service was better than I've received at most places in Arizona, I sat at the bar and was served hot food promptly. There were approximately 4-6 tables inside of the entire restaurant but it seemed very slow and staffed pretty well. I had the flight of margaritas, those were definitely worth trying out. I gave three stars because of the portion size, my $31 carne asada plate that was recommended by the bartender was over cooked, I ordered medium and it came out well done and crunchy. The dish contained sautéed onions, which I counted out exactly nine tiny slivers of sautéed onions.... skimping on the delicious veggies that make the plate look bigger I find odd. No sizzle, it's served on a sizzle platter. The chili relanno was the size of an average jalapeño, there was approximately a T spoon of pico served right on the sizzle platter making it hotter than anything on the dish almost burning my mouth. I had the seasonal Apple desert which was very small yet tasty and missing the pecans the menu had described. The size of that honestly made me with I never ordered it, $9 for 6 bites. I arrived at 5:30pm and was never informed it was happy hour or offered a menu, I saw the sign turned backwards as I left just outside of the door. All in all, I will probably not visit this location again. Maybe I'll check out the new one in Surprise. read more

We have been patronizing Barrio since our move here nine years ago. It is wonderful that there is now a location in the west valley. Nine times out of ten I order the Chiles en Nogada. Tonight was no different. The dish is a poblano pepper stuffed with chicken, dates, raisins, and almonds with an almond cream sauce. Because I am a weakling when it comes to spicy I skip eating the pepper. Hubby took advantage of taco Tuesday and enjoyed three tacos. The taco choices are numerous, with unique combinations. The restaurant is wonderfully designed. There had to be a lot of consideration given to the AZ climate. The rooms are spacious with large doorways leading to the outside dining area. We came on taco Tuesday Love that they turned the old Rock Bottom into a Mexican spot! They did well with the huge space, decorations are cute and colors are light and bright. Lot's of tables and a huge bar area. I didn't get to check out the 2nd patio but the one that faces the mall is big and open. The chips were insanely greasy and not that enjoyable, though the half moon cut on them makes for great dipping. The salsa was alright, needed way more flavor. The guacamole was disappointing asfff, especially for $12.50... our server was either 1. super busy, 2. embarrassed to have to do table side guacamole or 3. just didn't care to make it right.. it was just cut avocado she barely smashed. Too many wrong ingredients and not enough of others that deserved to be in it. Won't order it again, not worth it. My vegan taco looks bomb coming out and oddly enough had a large amount of veggies. Looks we're deceiving, it was gross as heck and the tortilla had already completely disintegrated. I couldn't eat it like a taco, and used a fork. The tortilla itself had really really good flavor, it was thinner than heck, and they had piled it with soupy wet veggies so it never stood a chance. Waaaaayyyy too much purple cabbage (that was half the taco!!) and the veggies oddly enough tasted like just grease. Ugh!! Had high hopes for it. Rice & beans were good but you get the tiniest amount for $7, it's kind of a rip off. Everyone had good things to say about the meat options, though the birria one was made incorrectly and was very underwhelming for my friend. Me personally will not be coming back for the food... vegan wise they suck. I can definitely enjoy this place as a bar though!! They serve Clase Azul here and shots are on special on Tuesday's!!! We've been wanting to try this place for months and had some hits & misses. First love the atmosphere and cocktails - five stars there! Although we sat in the bar area and it was loud. Food was meh. My husband and I both had enchiladas and they were made with flour tortillas and very dry. I had the mole and the sauce was wayyyyy to sweet for my liking. My son had tacos and they were tasty but VERY small and very little meat -- didn't seem like we were getting our money's worth there. Chips, salsa and queso were bomb. Our service was the worst. Our server was inattentive and no one cleared our glasses or dishes and we just had stuff stacked up off to the sides. I had told the waiter we needed to place a to go order and he suggested waiting until we were almost done but he went MIA and we had to go track down a manager who "took the order" but she actually just sent the server back to us and then he took the order. Second location in the valley we've tried and again, enjoyed it very much. The food was great and they have such a nice outdoor patio, although it can get a bit noisy being right on Bell Road. We ordered shrimp tacos, veggie enchiladas with chicken and the guacamole they make right at the table, which was way too chunky. We had to cut it up into smaller pieces after the guy left so we could eat it. It was still delicious. They do it again! I love Barrio Queen so much, the food, drinks, and service are so consistent and so delicious!!! I was here w a friend a couple of weeks ago for lunch and a couple of cocktails (because who can come without a couple delicious margs?!) We both ordered a few tacos and I opted for the spicy cucumber margarita and my friend got the house Marg. As always, everything was delicious...chips were hot and fresh, w the perfect amount of salt. The salsa is always great and plentiful! The tacos were delicious (of course, a bit messy but that's part of the fun, right?) and the ingredients are top notch. The drinks were perfect, the standard to which I compare all other margaritas! The stuffed poblano pork tinga on the happy hour menu was the best thing I have had there and it was a plentiful dish. I'll put it this way, I've been there now three times and the last time I went there I ordered a burger. It's a pretty restaurant with great outdoor seating options. Start it off with the great service which was really attentive and friendly. I have frequented the other location in the past and received the same quality of service. I was not overly impressed with the flavor of the food on this particular occasion. Time was limited otherwise I would likely have sent one of the two meals back as it tasted like it had been cooked and sitting for a few hours which would have been hard as we arrived right when it opened. Wow! Rarely do I get impressed with Mexican food anymore unless I'm eating at Javier's in Las Vegas, but place is the jam. Came in for lunch by myself and ordered the green posole and Cochinita Pilbil torta plus a fried egg ( great option). Bomb! The pork in the torta was tender AF, good spices, and the bread was very airy and moist. One thing I would recommend is more of the Pico De Gallo and pickled onions. Posole came out garnished with all the usual fixing (a nice touch!). Sadly I did not have a beer with my meal. Loved the decor and the merchandise. Will be back! read more

Barrio Queen is one of our favorites. A+ service, quality food, and a comfortable atmosphere. The prices here are not cheap but you certainly get what you pay for. Generous portions and high quality fresh ingredients. I've been here two times. I've chosen a burrito both times. One with short ribs the other with chicken. Both were fantastic. Excellent flavor and both times I needed a to go box. My wife the 1st time and daughter the second both got 3 tacos. Again, fresh high quality ingredients. Good prices too. They both loved them. My wife enjoyed the margarita selection and quality also. Nothing but great things to say about this place. This is a very clean establishment including the bathrooms as well. This is what Glendale needed! Incredible Mexican food offering everything from seafood to steak! The bar menu is great as well. The staff is so friendly it makes you feel like they've known you for years. There is something for everyone!!! We couldn't resist and went back 2 days later. My wife and I both ordered The Queen Enchiladas. We added shrimp and they were fantastic! They made us wait an hour for a table we had to tell them wed take an outside table and they just pushed a few together and we were set. Thats all it took. Second the server was super rude i get he was a little stressed out but all my time in the restaurant business you never take it out on the guests. Our food was cold when we got it and didnt even taste good. Next was we had to help them clean the table off so we can have dessert. I think that was super rude. The service in general seemed to be a little slow even though we received our food relatively quick for a busy Friday night. I was just a disappointment we could never find a server for what we needed however I understand it was busy and our server was very nice! The ambiance was SO loud I couldn't really hear my family talking. Between the music and everyone else talking it was kinda difficult to have a conversation... On another note, I made a reservation on OpenTable and they couldn't find our reservation so that was a little irritating. Overall, I would eat here again however just not as many people.
