My husband and I made a last-minute dinner reservation and were able to grab the 8:30 pm seating at the bar, which worked out great. The bartender was friendly and attentive, and took our order quickly. By the time we arrived they had already sold out of the bone marrow small plate and the tomahawk steak. Totally understandable for the last seating of the night, but those were two of the dishes we were really looking forward to trying. The main reason for 1 less star. It's a cool little spot for drinks and a gourmet bite. The kitchen, bar, and seating area are fairly compact. Even though the kitchen is ventilated, you can still feel a bit of the heat and smoke coming off the grill. We ordered the grilled romaine salad (they do charge a small upcharge if you split plates), along with the bao buns and the wagyu meatballs. Everything was well presented, tasty. Overall, a great option for the west side if you're looking for elevated bar bites and good drinks. Reserved a table online for a friends birthday. We arrived and checked in at the bar at Peoria artisan brewery and everyone was saying "oh this is nice" I said just wait. We were taken through the kitchen and into another room where as soon as the doors are opened you have left normalcy and entered an experience that starts right there. As you walk in the colors and richness is unmistakable with beautiful gold accents and a cage guarding bottles of wine and other liquor. To the right the wrap around bar and a beautiful open kitchen with a wood fired oven a flaming grill mixing the aromatic bitters with scents of grilled food. Seated at the bar and was graciously given the corner as our party of 4 was then able to chat much more easily. Bartenders greeted us and served us some water and after a few we asked about the drink menu. Found out that they have a large off menu list. Each bartender makes 2-3 off menu items based on their favorite style of base liquor and extremely rare bourbons like EH Taylor Single Barrel & Weller CYPB, not only were they a full pour of 2oz they weren't price gouging. Wives ordered beautiful and delicious drinks also off menu that they loved as well. Appetizers came rolling in bruschetta and brussel sprouts. Word of caution if spice is a problem most everything has a little bit of Fresno chilis on it. My wife is sensitive and it wasn't to much for her but just be advised. The apps were delicious full of flavor, the scratch made sourdough bread for that bruschetta DAMN! Only personal takeaway is we prefer our brussels a bit crispy but still very good. Our meals showing up were at just the right time, and wow incredible. Every bite was so delicious on my wife's meatballs my half chicken with duck fat fried French fries and our friends loved their aged New York strip. My wife even had a surprise of cheese at the bottom of her bowl but those wagyu meatballs were stellar! We didn't have any room for dessert but this place is one of the coolest spots ever. Barley and Smoke made for a nice evening out last Friday. My husband and I came in on a whim, hoping to just walk in since we didn't make reservations. We arrived close to 5pm and they were able to seat us. At first, it wasn't so busy but then an hour in, the place was getting super packed. The cocktails were creative and balanced. It was fun ordering different ones and seeing how they would turn out. The old fashioned with banana and walnut? notes was really good and I also enjoyed the pineapple bourbon smash. The small plate/appetizers could have been filling enough, but I'm glad we ordered several small plates and still got regular entrees as well. The bone marrow, the peach burrata, and the ribs were all so good! My husband liked his Waygu burger a lot and I had the seared tuna over corn. Our bartender/server was super nice and made nice suggestions. The bar had a sophisticated feel to it. We were super comfortable sitting at the bar, and it was more interesting that way because you could watch them make drinks and also cook. It's so wonderful having this speakeasy on this side of town. I hate always having to drive to Scottsdale and Tempe for all the new restaurants and bars. We deserve the fun too! We will definitely come back and we highly recommend Barley and Smoke. Took son here for his birthday meal, and we enjoyed the ambiance a great deal. Very cute idea to go thru a brewery to a gorgeous dining area. Service here is fantastic, and they give each seating 2 hours to eat which is plenty. One thing I noticed is that our waitress was working on the counter across the room fixing drinks or meals (couldn't see that well). She put on disposable blue rubber gloves every single time she did something which tells me the owner is very concerned about cleanliness. Many props for this! Now for the food. We got the Tomahawk Tuesday dinner. Normally we eat at Flemings and get that, so I can compare and think that Barley and Smoke's flavor was tastier and more juicy than their competitors. The Yukon potato that came with it was good as was the pre-meat Caesar salad. The desert was creme brulee which could have been better if it wasn't peanut butter with jelly. Cute take on that dessert but just meh. The waitress brought us each 2 homemade truffles which was great. All in all we are definitely coming back here! Now comparing Barley and Smoke vs. Flemings: You get 2 sides of your choice at Flemings which makes it slightly better deal. Then again, I did like the meat at Barley's better. Decisions, decisions. Note: If you use a credit card here, bring your identification. I didn't carry mine as usual for me, nobody ever checks when I hand over my card, but this place will. The poor waitress looked like she was going to lose it when I said I didn't have i.d. on me. Nobody anywhere, restaurants, movies, clothing stores, nobody ever checks but they will here. First time in years anyone checked my i.d. But my son had credit cards on him and paid (even tho it was my treat for his birthday). They had seating availability at the bar too every 15 minutes so it was quite easy to get a seat. Located inside Peoria Artisan Brewery, you will check in with the hostess upon arrival. She walked us through the kitchen to find the speakeasy. So vinyl and very unexpected after being walked through the kitchen. The drinks were fun and creative and the menu had a nice variety to it. We started off with 1/2 dozen oysters and cocktails. I ordered the English garden and I think my husband ordered a sidecar. The English garden was delicious! I especially loved the coconut cream. For dinner we ordered the tomahawk dinner meant to share. This came with a Caesar salad, roasted rosemary potatoes, the carved tomahawk, and a dessert. I wish I could remember the price but I do remember thinking it was a great amount of food. I would have liked the steak to have been a bit more tender and flavorful but everything else was tasty. We upgraded our dessert to the peach cobbler, which did not disappoint, and finished the night with an espresso martini - which was more milk-based than espresso. After a few visits now I can confirm that I'm a fan of Barley & Smoke. I was after my first visit but I'm trying to be patient before I lavish praise so readily. The speakeasy-style spot is a winner. Ensconced within Peoria Artisan Brewery the space is accessed via a short walk through the kitchen, where the staff will welcome you on your way. You enter into a nice cozy spot with ample bar seating around an open kitchen area with nice table seating to accommodate various-sized groups. I won't go into exhaustive detail on the menu, you can check the website but, while a bit small, it is nicely varied and eclectic in a way. The Tallow and Bread is a definite winner, as is the Pork Belly Fried Rice - which is a meal in itself. We also sampled the Asparagus, which was delicious. We also tried the B&S Burger on our previous visit which was quite tasty. Dishes are nicely presented and appealing. The cocktail and wine menu is impressive. The El Hefe Grande is wonderful, consisting of Manchado Bacanora, Cointreau, Limoncello, Charred Lemon Juice, Agave Syrup, and Black Lava Salt Blend. There is a very nice selection of wine and a really good list of Whiskey, Bourbons and Scotch. You're sure to find something to enjoy. Service is really above average in my opinion. Very knowledgeable about the menu, current drink special and any recommendations you might need. On both of our visits Rain was outstanding. Last night I treated my wife to an early Mother's Day dinner at the new Barley & Smoke speakeasy she had been eager to try. Upon walking through the kitchen of the Peoria Artisan Brewery restaurant, we were met with a fantastic and beautiful bar and the pleasant scent of hardwood smoke hanging in the air, illuminated by the glow of the Edison lights and reflected by tarnished bar mirrors in gilded frames. We were seated at a table with a comfortable and elegant tufted back booth and an executive chair on the opposing side. Our server, Bradford, kindly introduced himself and welcomed us to the restaurant. Bradford was funny and friendly and made several recommendations when talking about the specials (One of which, the oysters, I took him up on). If we ever had a question about anything, he had the answer. After ordering and before receiving our food, I admired the impressive artisan bar where the liquor was stored; As well as the gorgeous glassware and flatware, the classic design of the menus, the cleanliness and industriousness of the other staff and kitchen, and the how clean and well-kept the restroom facilities were. We enjoyed our first round of craft cocktails, amidst the pleasantness of whatever 80s synth wave music was playing in the background. My wife had the very delicious and refreshing La Mariposa, while I had the incredible Smokin' Aces (a must have for fans of old fashions or smoked bourbon drinks). Our Appetizers came quickly and were consumed even quicker. The oysters were delicious with hot sauce and the bone marrow with toast on a bed of fresh arugula and radish shavings was so fantastic it may warrant a return trip for it alone. With our second round of drinks, (a glass of old Forester 1920 for myself and, the drink special of the evening, an orange blossom spritzer for my wife) we enjoyed the Caesar salad that came with our family style tomahawk steak special. The salad was topped with fresh white anchovies that tasted nothing like the salt-bombs that are often associated with the commonly disliked pizza topping. These anchovies tasted much more like an artisan white fish that you might receive on a bakery fresh bagel. Finally, the tomahawk arrived, cooked to a medium rare perfection with fresh rosemary and potatoes. I am not being facetious when I state that this was, bar none, the greatest steak I have ever had the pleasure of eating. And as someone who used to eat steaks on a near nightly basis when bulking for competitive lifting, I must say this steak was marbled to perfection with fat that melted in your mouth like warm butter. I had to pay my respects to the chef. Last on the docket was dessert. We had beignets with both salted caramel syrup and, my favorite, the blueberry mezcal syrup, which added a rich smoky tarty taste to the confectioners sugar covered beignets. This paired nicely with the final drink of the evening, a glass of EH Taylor small batch. All in all this was the best dining experience we have had in months and it became an immediate recommendation to several friends and coworkers. First visit to Barley and Smoke speakeasy in west Peoria. We ordered the Pork Belly appetizer and the Tallow & Bread. The Pork Belly was awesome and it is a must order. One of the best I have had in Arizona Bread had a unique touch with a melting tallow candle but it is nothing super special. We ordered the chef catch sea bass and Santa Maria ribeye for our main dishes. The ambiance is really cool and our server Rain was awesome and very knowledgeable. The sea bass was a large portion and was tasty. The ribeye was good but not great. Ordered medium rare and it was closer to medium. It also had a pico on top and it was a total miss. It does not pair well with the steak. The rosemary potatoes that came with the ribeye were a mixed bag. Some were burnt and others were just right. Have to pay attention when cooking the whole batch. I am not sure if I want to give them another chance. Update, the owner (Matt) came by before we left the restaurant and addressed any concern we might have had. We recently visited Barley & Smoke and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. We ordered the bone marrow, only to be told they were out. Not long after, we watched the bartender eat bone marrow right in front of us, which felt unprofessional and frustrating. She also mentioned it was her "Friday," in a way that came across as hoping we would leave earlier than planned. On top of that, they kept moving "Stella" in and out of the hallway, which was distracting and disrupted the atmosphere. We had the fresh oysters with three unique mignonette sauces. The fresh catch was sea bass (kick his ass sea bass) with fresh cacio d pepe pappardelle. The beignets were perfect, not to sweet and two delicious sauces, berry coulis and a brown butter. I'd recommend getting some for you morning coffee. The service was top notch. The specialty drinks were very fancy and quite tasty. The waitress was very nice and helpful to the menu, but to me it was so overpriced. 4 of us went and shared the tomahawk steak and the bill was just over $500 after taxes. We asked for the tomahawk steak to come out, medium to rare and it came out overdone with no pink at all. A group of us (4) had reservations for dinner to finally try this place. The entry is thru the kitchen of their neighboring restaurant. This is a neat concept, but my thoughts passing thru the kitchen was not "wow". I saw a shelf on my left of various restaurant items and the word that came to mind was "mess" - I was a little surprised this entry wasn't highly organized and presentable. As you entered the speak easy you were greeted by a large mirror - that was cool, it caught our attention. The exit is right there, the image attempts to disguise the door - I would recommend painting the door trim black to add to the disguise. I was quickly disappointed to find we were allotted 2 hours and 15 minutes, which wasn't the 2 1/2 hours indicated on the reservation text. I personally don't like having a limitation on my dinning experience. We ordered appetizers: Potato's - good Charcuterie boards- good Bone marrow - good Oysters- good All was good, but nothing was wow or unique. For dinner we ordered the chicken - I would not order this again. It was slightly dry and full of tiny bones. They cut the chicken and serve it - a bone warning would have been great! The ribeye was also ordered - more fat than meat it what I was told. My 2nd martini was so sour I had to have it adjusted. I've met the owner in the past, and he's a really nice guy, so I would recommend trying his place as you may have a different feeling about it. There was no secret code to enter, or music. Yes, it was dimly lit, yet the lighting continuously flickered which bothered all of us. We are big foodies, and we love the speakeasy style of restaurants. Without hesitation we will drink, dine & talk for hours and easily drop $500 a couple (the men love their whiskey), but at the end of our experience we didn't need the slotted 2.25 hours and we agreed that this place was a "one and done" for us. Came here for a fun night out and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Our server, Rain, was absolutely wonderful. I truly can't say enough great things about her. She gave fantastic recommendations and attended to everything we could have needed. I ordered the seared ahi tuna and loved every bite! My friend ordered the wagyu burger but was slightly disappointed. Regardless, we both agreed we would visit again! So nice to have a fun place like this on the west side. Went for dinner with some friends the other night and haven't been able to stop thinking about my meal since then. I got the vegetables and hummus with flank steak, my husband got the cheeseburger and my friends got grilled Romain lettuce and everything was divine! Probably one of the best meals I've had in months, if not years. Also, their espresso martini- delicious!! we were sat pretty close to the grills/kitchen area and it did get pretty warm- but we were able to move over some after some other people left and that was so much better. Anyways 10 out of 10 and I'm so glad to have found a new regular spot for us to eat. Oh, and the weight staff and bartenders... Amazing! read more

It's Peoria, AZ. It's begging for fine dining options that are refreshingly food first, price expected second. We have been to Arrowhead Grill and watched prices rise without the quality rising. We tire of the drive towards Scottsdale. We hear we can drop money at BB and then resent it so we cook at home but I tire of cooking to get value and long for attention. We heard of Barley and Smoke and checked the address several times as it's located in a bar? In a strip mall? By a Walmart and Dairy Queen? We enter the entrance and everyone's in tshirts. Where has my husband taken me for our Anniversary? Why did I over dress? The Maitre D is in jean shorts. "You must be for Barley and Smoke." We get walked passed all the staring through the kitchen. "We have guests." She announces and they all greet us with genuine smile and a touch of reverence. She takes us to a silver double door and it opens into beautiful soft lightening and some chattering. It IS a speakeasy feel and they achieved the "secret" effect. I like that. I like to remember something novel. Run rabit run meets Peoria? We get seated. The bar wraps around a corner of the room and over looks the chefs busy. The outer perimeter has 8 maybe nine tables and seats 2-6 people maybe 8 by why ruin the intimacy. The menus changes but the options are a taste of various desires. The bar is full and everyone has a cocktail. Things look a tad sexier in Peoria. There's no windows. I like that. The small plates start for us with a simple charcuterie. Something to keep talking over. The raw oysters come and are meaty sweet and paired with mignonettes. One is gin infused and our secret drinking starts. We select our cocktails: Smokin' Aces and the Black Gotham. Smokin' Aces has the essential smoking hardwood gun cap. The nose takes in the dense heat and then the drink flows down your throat and hits all the bitters. Black Gotham is velvety at first and hits walnut, oak then at the tip of the tongue chocolate bitters. Bao Bun is soft dough and over stuffed with a savory sweet marinade. The pork is tender and the pickled veggies hit the high sours with the thin sliced peppers hitting the spicy notes. It's East meets West because true to America it is stuffed and pouring out. The ribeye is tender and well seasoned not over salted sitting on the horseradish potatoes and covered in wild mushrooms. "We should cook more with wild mushrooms," I say to my husband. But he's licking his fingers again. We talk about our wedding night 24 years ago and we think of the major decisions we made in those 24 years and reflect on which we agree were best.
