The food was great, just a couple of minor issues (cheese could have been melted a bit more, request to omit onions was missed, description on Door Dash said the queso came with tortilla chips but I received tortillas). We were repeat visitors. We sat outside in early January; there are heaters that kept us warm enough. My wife and son had street tacos; all were good but my wife's fish tacos were not as good as those on previous visits, she alleged. I had the Arizona Burrito, with pork, which was very good indeed. Food is great. Service is very friendly and helpful. We have been coming here for quite some time. They did have a good wine list until recently. They eliminated 2 very nice Chardonnay's (Butter and La Crema) and replaced them with a mediocre sav blanc (14 hands). NO idea why they would do THAT. So now it is beer or margs. Good chance my frequency of visits will decrease significantly. If Mgt is reading this, I ask that you add one or both Chardonnay's back to the menu. read more

I have eaten here twice now since moving back to Phoenix. It's a super cool ambiance and I love the decor. They have a great patio with awesome people watching (and an ample amount of heaters for chilly nights). The handmade chips are to die for! So flaky and delicious! My husband got the appetizer Barrio Pappas with the pork green chili and Oaxocon cheese, For entree he got a burrito both times and was very happy with. He likes a good sized burrito and the ones here are for sure gonna fill you up. I got the Cochinita Pibil the first time and practically had a mouthgasm!!! It was like a party in my mouth!!! The second time I wanted to try something different even though I really wanted the Pibil again. I got the Carnitas Michoacanas. It was just OK. Not nearly as much flavor as the Pibil. I plan on trying the Mole next time. I took off a star for the service. The first time it was mediocre. The second time it was awful. Our server was mentally off in space somewhere. She would disappear forever, forgot to bring things we asked for, etc. However, that won't stop us from going back. Really happy this place is here! read more

My friend and I ate at the Barrio Queen in old town Scottsdale. Pam our waitress was very knowledgeable in the different items on the list and made some good suggestions in helping us to pick something to eat also they do not serve blended drinks, or other items that you're used to seeing on a Mexican menu. Pam suggested a Barrio Paloma drink. This drink was very refreshing and good. I really enjoyed the drink. I had two taco DeTingas. The meat was marinaded and very tasty on a blue tortilla shell. "No way, Josè!" That's what I said when I went to Barrio Queen for my birthday dinner and had Josè as our server who serenaded me with mariachi-style songs while I enjoyed the amazing food! So, yes way! My best friend in the whole world made a reservation for my birthday dinner and since we all love Mexican food (olè!), we decided to dine at Barrio Queen. Upon arrival, the place was crowded and had a great ambiance, and even had live music on the patio. We were seated inside at a cute and comfy booth (although I would've loved to enjoy the live music outside... another time). Josè, our server was absolutely phenomenal! He really added to the whole experience and made it extra... because, let's face it, it was my birthday so it was kind of "extra". Josè was attentive, anticipated our needs without us having to ask, quick, and he made us all laugh the whole night. For dinner, we had a plethora of food (see what I did there? 3 Amigos reference, hehe): * Chips & Salsa: complimentary and made with love... you can taste the love with every bite you take. * Barrio Guacamole: delicious guac prepared table-side. Yeaaaa, we devoured it. * Carne Asada Burrito: Grilled mouth-watering steak marinated in fresh orange and garlic, epazote black beans, Oaxaca cheese, homemade pico de gallo and avocado. Then it's topped with sour cream and fresh cilantro, and extra pico de gallo on the side... it's HUGE!!! * The Queen -- this is what I ordered, since I was the Birthday Queen and all, lol: Enchiladas with a blend of yummy cheeses, including Oaxaca, cotija and goat cheese; mixed with sautéed spinach, shallots and garlic and then topped with a spicy cream sauce (drool), more cotija cheese and fresh sour cream. (Reliving eating this and my mouth is watering). * Chiles en Nogada: Authentic Mexican dish, super yum! Roasted poblano pepper filled with chicken, apples, pears, dried apricots, golden raisins, walnuts, onions and garlic (sounds weird, but it's mouth-wateringly delicious!) Then it's topped with an almond cream sauce, and the Mexican flag: made of fresh cilantro, queso fresco, almond slices and pomegranate seeds. And, as if that wasn't enough, it comes with chipotle mashed potatoes and veggies. * Azteca Enchiladas: Delicately slow-cooked melt-in-your-mouth beef brisket and melted Oaxaca cheese, and topped with green tomatillo sauce, diced red onions, fresh cilantro and fresh sour cream. It was so much food, that we all ended up getting to-go boxes (yay for amazing leftovers!), so come super hungry and be prepared to be really full when you leave. For dessert, we were so full that we didn't order any... but I must say, I was a bit bummed out that Barrio Queen doesn't do a free dessert for birthdays. Josè, seeing that I was bummed out, went out of his way and brought me a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a candle in it, which made my night... plus, he serenaded me while he brought it. It's the simple things in life that make me smile, and quite honestly, the fact that Josè did that for me was so heartfelt and extremely appreciated. (Maybe, perhaps, Barrio Queen, you do little things for birthdays... just a suggestion... it doesn't take much to make people smile). We went to Bario Queen for the first time with my parents, who frequent the restaurant. We had a wonderful experience. If I could give 6 stars I would. Our server, Justin, was attentive, and helpful. He was great without kids (ages 2 & 5), even giving them some ice cream after their meals. The table-side guacamole was delicious, and the margaritas were the perfect mix of sweet and sour. We highly recommend this place and will be back in the near future. read more

What an awesome spot! Barrio Queen in one of the primo spots in Desert Ridge. Great Mexican food and great people. I came in alone today to sit at the bar and get some work done. I ended up talking to one of the Bartenders Hannah, who was absolutely amazing. I wasn't sure what to order, so she skillfully helped me navigate the menu and even talked me into trying a jalapeño margarita which was delicious (I had two). If you like spicy, this is a must. Overall Hannah's energy, and great personality coupled with her great recommendations made this experience a home run. Love that this is in my neighborhood. I'll definitely be back. read more

So here's the good: We sat at the bar while we waited and our bartender was great and so were the drinks. I ordered the Pepino Loco and El Tamarindo. Both excellent and jalapeno infused tequila has a nice kick. The restaurant and bar were active and a very good vibe and ambiance. The homemade corn chips are prefect. The salsa is very good too even though it's not spicy it has very good flavor. I ordered the Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo which I found delicious. They have plenty of seating indoors and outdoors with misters on hot days. The dulce de leche creme brulee is deliciously rich! The cajeta...ooooh so good. The bad: When we arrived we were told there was a 25 min. wait and asked to give our phone number and we would receive a text when our table was ready. No big deal, we'd go to the bar and order drinks but over 35 min. in and still no text we check with the hostess and realize she had the wrong number. :/ While the camarones (shrimp) were delicious, I thought the calabazitas were undercooked and so was the rice. It was our first time at the restaurant so it took us a while to review the menu but our waiter never asked if we had any questions. I felt hurried from the time we were seated. It felt as if the waiter wanted to get us out of there to close up. It was 10:15 pm when we were done eating on a Saturday and they close at 11 pm. I felt rushed the whole time. So although my initial experience started off really well, it didn't end as well as it started. I'd like to try more food options and I really enjoyed the drinks so I would definitely return but wouldn't hurry back. I'd like to give it 3.5 stars if I could. read more

I have been here 4 or 5 times now and have always had a great experience every time food and service is exceptional. Tacos are absolutely amazing. I even had a child who did not want Mexican food but guess what they have hot dogs on their menu. A little something for everybody even vegetarians..... One thing I was disappointed was when my check came 3 of us were charged $3 each for the rice. When he took our order he asked if we wanted rice or beans not saying it was an extra charge. If I had known it was an extra charge all 3 of us could have shared one helping because it was brought out on a separate tray. read more

As others were being served. So I was worried about the condition of the food and only ordered a single pork tamale. It was soggy and tart. Not thanks. I would not recommend this location. Looks nice though and they are spacing customers out during this time. That's appreciated. The second star is for the the Don Julio $16 shot that comes with two tacos. Walking into Barrio Queen sets the stage for what feels like will be a delightful experience, generating a bit of excitement due to the unique decor and the pleasant patio arrangement. The menu is extensive and the taco selection, in title only, impressive, as it summons the the spirit of several classics with a new wave, hipster spin. The biggest problem, consistency. While the menu at one time was most likely a bold and flavor packed delight, I can tell that the care that was taken to orchestrate this new wave take on old fare has fallen by the wayside. The charro beans are clunky and the tacos were not appetizing. The service left as much to be desired, with our sides being brought to our table before our main course while our server seemed inattentive from the jump. My first encounter with Bario Queen was at their first original location. I was visiting my daughter and her hubby. We lived in Columbus at that time. My wife was with me. My daughter and her husband picked us up from the airport and we went directly to the original Barrio Queen. Don't ask me where it was located. I have no idea. We were totally enamoured by the vibe, the food and the whole experience. At least a decade has passed that time. This time I went to their Desert Ridge Location, regrettably, on a Friday night. Finding a seat for a solo diner was a challenge. Eventually I got seated at the bar. I did not want a big meal so I opted for an appetizer that centered around Oxacan cheese. It was fantastic. I will go back to check out other offerings. So why only three stars? A couple of reasons: 1) I missed the ambiance of my first experience at their original location. 2) Service was mediocre and did not have a warmth unto itself. 3) The atmosphere reminded me of a chain restaurant, which it sort of is. read more

Disappointed with this location. My family and I came for double birthdays this last Saturday night. After a bit of a wait (no reservations) we were seated at a nice table outside. That's about the last time anyone visited our table. We ordered drinks-- waters and iced teas. There were 5 of us and we received 4 waters. We asked over and over for an additional water and finally gave up. We ordered the famous guacamole. They wheeled the cart over there and the server made it in complete silence. At the Scottsdale location they engage with you and tell you about what they are making. It definitely took away from the experience. Overall we probably saw our server twice, once for drinks once for food. We never got refills on any of the drinks (which were empty mid dinner) and were never asked if we wanted more chips or salsa. Food was just okay. I got a chicken burrito and the tortilla was pretty gummy from the sauce in the inside. I didn't even want to take my leftovers home. My family got enchiladas though and really enjoyed them however. The women's restroom was a disaster. Not something I would expect to see at a nicer restaurant. Seems like this location has a lot to work out still. Yes they were busy but they need to have more people working if that's the case. Overall I would not recommend this location based solely on (lack of) service. read more

Vacationing in Phoenix and came on recommendation from locals - Yelp 3 star rating does not do this place justice. Great decor and comfortable chairs. We were told 15 min wait, pleasantly surprised with 10! Fresh chips and salsa, great drinks (dos equis mug and margarita special). I got the margarita on recommendation of server - did not disappoint. Tableside guac was amazing. Fresh, different and tasty. You can add tomato, jalapeño, cilantro, onion, pomegranate seeds or in any combo. Food was outstanding. Carne asada had big portion, great taste and preparation. I was between Arizona burrito and Carnitas Michoacanas, went with latter on servers recommendation. Tender pork, very tasty. If I'm being super picky we waited a little longer than perfect for service. Still not enough to take away from 5 star experience. read more

I recently started staying in the Desert Ridge area and found that the DR mall was extremely convenient during 'rona. In the middle of of my stays, I found myself famished and was in the mood for some sopita, just like my abuel made. Expecting only to find taco shops, I notice Barrio Queen and instantly knew this restaurant is legit, not only by the name, but the food!! Having drooled all over the menu, I decided to order my childhood favorites: elote, calabazitas, pozole, and tacos de carne asada and nopál. This was only my first order, which was delivery (eff u 'rona)! So, now that I was able to go into the restaurant to enjoy the food super fresh, I found myself tearing up when walking in - I swear I almost started looking for my abuel, jajaja . My servers name is Angel, and it was like I was family. Being Mexican, Spanish being my first language....and living in the nw valley, it's near impossible to find someone that can converse is Spanish. Ahh, I was so happy! Once Angel knew i spoke fluently, he was happy to respond in Spanish. Angel was very attentive and he had great recommendations. I went with the nopal tacos again, Mar y Tierra (surf & turf) tacos, agua fresca (just like home...not overly sweet and all natural), and a Negro Modelo. Thank you Angel for being so attentive!! I will be coming in every chance I have, even after I've had everything on the menu. If anyone wants to know what real Latin food is like, this place is a MUST. I am sorry for your loss if you decide to go elsewhere. This place is the closest thing I can get aside from going back home to San Diego. read more

Just left Barrio Queen and let me say first and foremost that the back of the house(kitchen) did a great job. The food was actually incredible. However, the service was the absolute worst and we have been frequent diners at barrio Queen. Went to the one in Old Town Scottsdale dozens of times. This was our 3rd or 4th time at the Desert Ridge location. Our friends got there before us and grabbed a table. We arrived about 5 minutes after they did. Took about 6-7 minutes just to get a water from our server Rebecca. I also ordered one margarita. We had to flag Rebecca down to tell her we were ready to order. Mind you we have one pregnant women and a hungry 3 year old with us, Rebecca said when we told her we were ready to order that she would go grab my margarita and come right back to take our order. 10 minutes go by, no margarita and no Rebecca. The bar tender ended up bringing my margarita that was sitting in the well for a long time just getting watered down. Finally we get our order in and food didn't take too long. However, once we got the food, we wanted to ask for some more chips, a few more sauces, and needed a few water refills. Rebecca came back to our table about 10 minutes later. Literally, 10 minutes!! By then, food is cold and I just asked to speak with a manager and get a box. Manager comes by and we tell her what had happened and how this is terrible service compared to what we are used to at Barrio Queen. Can't remember her name but started with a T...maybe Taryn. Anyways, she didn't seem to care very much. She comped my watered down margarita. When we walked out the front door, the manager was walking in the front door. She wouldn't even look at us at all. Completely ignored us while a hostess said thank you for coming. Like WOW! We will NEVER be dining there ever again and will never recommend that place to anyone. The manager could have tried to make it right but instead, she did next to nothing and couldn't even have the decency to say bye and thank us for coming when we walked out of the door. Being from Texas you know I love tacos. The tacos at barrio queen in the atmosphere at barrio queen and the customer service at barrio queen was all five star. I was recommended to check out barrio queen from my boss I didn't get a margarita but I did get three tacos the tacos you can select out of about 20 different combinations and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. They want the biggest tacos in the world but they were packed with a flavor punch that can knock you out. They do offer a couple different salsas with your chips and salsa. one that is really hot that I really enjoyed. They have a more subtle salsa for those that can't handle the heat like us Texans. There was a small weight as this place is popular and kind a duct off in a shopping center but I must say I do want to come back on a night where they have specials on the margaritas the check amount also happy hour wouldn't be a bad opportunity to check out the vibes and barrio queen. Food was delicious. I got the carne Asada and my wife got the queen enchiladas. My carne asada was cooked perfectly and the sides were delicious. The enchiladas were seasoned perfectly and the sauce was to die for. I probably will never come back because I received the worst service that I have ever received in a Scottsdale restaurant. Our server took forever to come to our table when we first got there. And we basically never saw here again, some one else brought us our food and no one ever came to check on us. The next time we saw our waiter was around 20 minutes after we finished eating when she brought us our bill and told us the credit card machine was down. She told us a manager would be buy to assist with a paper ticket then left. 30 minutes later no one came by and finally our waitress returned and seemed shocked that no one had come by to handle our bill. Ignoring customers and making them wait for service Is a poor retention strategy. The place was clearly not busy as waiters were hanging around our table talking the whole night but our waiter was no where to be found and when you charge Scottsdale prices you should not ignore your customers. read more

The bar is good for drinks and good bar service with chips and salsa. The bartender was great. The food is just ok. Feels like a tourist trap. Waited for a table they were supposed to text and never got a text, then rude response from hostess when asking about our table. Sat outside after the waiting for a table at the bar for 40 min, the table server seemed ready to go home and gave very poor service. Never asked if we wanted drinks. He came and asked to pick up the receipt before we were even ready to leave. It's not like we were sitting there very long. Poor server etiquette. Will not return because of the poor service the food was mediocre at best. One of the employees was stinking up the bathroom in a stall, nothing worse than that except for picking up your tip before the table is ready to leave. read more
