I came here for lunch a while back and LOVED it! We decided to sit on the patio as the inside seemed a bit loud. To drink, we both decided on sangria. I could have sat there all day drinking it, it was so refreshing! We started with the guacamole which is prepared tableside to your liking. It was excellent and very flavorful and fresh. For lunch, we both decided on the chopped salad...mine with carne asada and hers with shrimp. I dream about that salad! It was the perfect mix of ingredients and every bite was bursting with flavor. Visiting Peoria Az from Dallas Tx in search of a Mexican restaurant. Upon my arrival to the restaurant, I requested outdoor patio seating for 9, I was informed of 25min wait but we were accommodated within 15 min. Our table was situated under the sun which staff remedied quickly for our request of umbrellas. .Restaurant had an extensive menu to choose from. All the food ordered for our table were gastronomically good. Luke, our waiter provided us with excellent service. He remained on top with his his game from beginning to the end. One of what I like to observe about a restaurant is how well staff members work together and to see if a manager helping. Kudos to Anthony, Manager on duty! This local chain is taking Phoenix by storm - and for good reason: good service, attention to details, quality ingredients and an interesting menu. So far one of my favorite places I've discovered in the Phoenix area! My friend and I stopped by for happy hour and a light dinner before we did a little Friday night shopping. We waited about 15 minutes for our table and were seated on the patio. We got there with enough time to order Happy Hour margaritas. One of the better ones I've had since here! Then we opted for tacos. My friend describes them as "artfully prepared" and I have to agree. I tried a grilled shrimp taco, the cochinita pibil (slow-cooked pork) and the carne asada with chile relleno. The chile relleno with the carne asada is a roasted jalapeno which brings a necessary bit of heat to the taco. I liked that very much. But of course my fave is what they're known for: the cochinita. Try it in a taco or burrito - it's truly flavorful and tender. They pay great attention to detail, like fresh-made chips accompanied by fresh lime that you squeeze on to add a little extra bit of flavor. And the salsa was terrific, at least to my taste. I would definitely return and would recommend that you try one of the spots near you - they have locations in Scottsdale, Gilbert and north Phoenix at Desert Ridge shopping area. If you're looking for top quality Mexican food, this is the place to go. The table side guacamole is expensive, but tasty. Love the addition of pomegranate seeds. Great quality chips and salsa as well. If you're vegan, try the chile relleno de vegetales made vegan style....excellent flavors. Just left Barrio Queen and let me say first and foremost that the back of the house(kitchen) did a great job. The food was actually incredible. However, the service was the absolute worst and we have been frequent diners at barrio Queen. Went to the one in Old Town Scottsdale dozens of times. This was our 3rd or 4th time at the Desert Ridge location. Our friends got there before us and grabbed a table. We arrived about 5 minutes after they did. Took about 6-7 minutes just to get a water from our server Rebecca. I also ordered one margarita. We had to flag Rebecca down to tell her we were ready to order. Mind you we have one pregnant women and a hungry 3 year old with us, Rebecca said when we told her we were ready to order that she would go grab my margarita and come right back to take our order. 10 minutes go by, no margarita and no Rebecca. The bar tender ended up bringing my margarita that was sitting in the well for a long time just getting watered down. Finally we get our order in and food didn't take too long. However, once we got the food, we wanted to ask for some more chips, a few more sauces, and needed a few water refills. Rebecca came back to our table about 10 minutes later. Literally, 10 minutes!! By then, food is cold and I just asked to speak with a manager and get a box. Manager comes by and we tell her what had happened and how this is terrible service compared to what we are used to at Barrio Queen. Can't remember her name but started with a T...maybe Taryn. Anyways, she didn't seem to care very much. She comped my watered down margarita. When we walked out the front door, the manager was walking in the front door. She wouldn't even look at us at all. Completely ignored us while a hostess said thank you for coming. Like WOW! We will NEVER be dining there ever again and will never recommend that place to anyone. The manager could have tried to make it right but instead, she did next to nothing and couldn't even have the decency to say bye and thank us for coming when we walked out of the door. I'd be surprised if this place stays open for another year or two with that kind of service and management. Kitchen crew crushed it and that's the only reason they might make it. read more

Wavering between 3-4 stars. This place is soooooo adorable. The atmosphere is really great. But the food was good, not great, and overpriced (in my opinion). I read other reviews which complained about slow service which we did not experience. The waitress greeted us promptly. We each ordered a draft beer and she brought chips and salsa then returned with our beer. The chips weren't my favorite - thick and a little greasy - but the salsa was good. They had a lot of margaritas on the menu and I was tempted to have a Paloma but it was $18 and I just don't see spending that much on a drink. That wasn't even the most expensive drink, either! I ordered the Arizona burrito which was $12 and was green chili pork and smothered with a really good green sauce. It was huge. I put my fork on the plate with the photo to show the size of it. The pork was a little fatty for my liking but that is the traditional way it's made so I really can't complain. Hubby ordered the Azteca burrito which was also $12. Also humongous. It was beef brisket and rice and had a red sauce on half and green sauce on the other half. He also said it was good. We both only ate half and brought the rest home for another meal. $48 before tip for 2 burritos and 2 draft beers seemed pricey though. I might go back during a nice afternoon for happy hour on their great patio. Maya was our waitress and she was very good. We waited 40 minutes for a table but was good with that because of good recommendations. Chips and salsa were very good. Don't order a frozen drink, they don't serve them, lose a star! Cheese appetizer just ok. Chicken enchilada ok, mole sauce not too good, lose a star. I had to come back again since I was in the vicinity. The al pastor tacos are simply amazing. I also had the cochinita pibil and it was just as delicious, but I still think the al pastor is the best. I visited Barrio Queen for the second time last Friday. Both times were delicious! From the chips and salsa to the dessert, we were not disappointed. We had the tacos this time. Our waiter recommended a few options, which we really enjoyed. The pescado asado tacos had perfectly grilled fish, the barrio polo is perfectly seasoned with just a touch of spice, and the carne asada y chile relleno is packed with flavor. We shared the dulce de leche creme brulee after dinner. It was heaven! It was rich, creamy, and perfectly crystallized on top. Despite its size, we couldn't finish the entire thing. But I recommend you get it, share it, and savor every bite. Our server Dustin made the experience even more enjoyable. He made terrific recommendations. He was attentive and personable. It's always nice when you get a great server that knows what he's doing! The only drawback to this location is the long wait for a table (it's worth it) and the noise level inside.
