Good southwest eatery, lots of options, and tasty drinks. On a pre-game drop in, and coming off a nice nap, we tried Barrio Queen. A very nice catrina themed Mexican restaurant. It was just before lunch, but the place wasn't too busy, and we were seated promptly by the host. Our server, Valentina V. (Tina), was quick to present us with menus, chips and (tasty) salsa, and take out orders. She was on it - makes a mean guac. I wanted to try their tacos, and Liz did try two shrimp tacos that looked really good. Noemi enjoyed her kids chicken quesadilla, nothing too complicated there. Noah tried the Tamale Duo. The tamale duo came with one chicken in red sauce tamale, and one green chile pork tamale with rice and beans. He put a good dent in it for sure, meaning he really liked it. I enjoyed my birria enchiladas plate. The cheese and birria enchiladas were covered in green chile. It was pretty good, and I didn't leave anybody any bites. Tina checked on us throughout the meal, and make sure to take care of us during our time there. We left full and happy. I'd come to back to try their bar, and probably a variety of their tacos.

Our first time and I was really hoping we would love it- my husband Loves Mexican food!! Unfortunately, it was a lackluster experience. Our server was obviously rushed it seemed, we ordered our drinks- we loved my husband's mocktail!! The tacos arrived and they were nicely presented and warm. But, they weren't the most flavorful tacos. The rice and beans were so bland- I thought why bother with the calories!! Yikes! Not the experience we were hoping for- but, sometimes you try new things and are disappointed....Darn!

Went on a Monday for Lunch and sat outside on the patio. The weather was nice and scene was pretty. -Chips and salsa are amazing! -Great iced tea options. -Menu is huge and full of options. -I added shrimp as an extra Add-on to my salad and was sad to see I only like 4 shrimp. - next time I will go back to my regular order of posole, the salad was not worth the spend. Note to moms: there is a changing table in the women's restroom! Feedback to Management: - lower the volume on the patio, it was too loud, like gave me anxiety while I was eating. - speed of service needed to be improved

This was a lovely, solid Mexican food joint! Ambiance is great when you walk in - lots of indoor and outdoor seating options with themed decor and a couple of tv's near the bar for sports viewing. We were seated after a thirty minute wait (dinner rush on Friday night) but attended to promptly. The free chips and salsa are bomb. Salsa is delicious and the chips feel lighter than most tortilla chips. They have a good variety of drinks and Mexican food on their menu. I ordered three tacos for $5.50 each (birria, tacos de tinga, and carne asada) and my boyfriend ordered the birria enchiladas. My favorite tacos were definitely the birria - very juicy and soupy, but the other tacos were flavorful and not bad. The carne asada tacos were very chewy. My boyfriend also enjoyed his birria enchiladas. It was a big enough serving that he was able to take some home in a box. Overall, a great pick in Desert Ridge. Appreciated that they also accepted a military discount here too.

My overall feelings about Barrio Queen is that there are some things to like and some things not to like. Overall, it's a pleasant experience, but it leaves a little to be desired. I've checked out this trendy Mexican joint twice: both on weekdays. Located in Desert Ridge Marketplace, parking won't be an issue. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is one of the areas where Barrio Queen shines. It's a large restaurant with a spacious patio, a bar that's partially outside and inside, and plenty of seating indoors. There are both tables and booths. The decor is really cool too, with a decent amount of Dia de Los Muertos stuff. Service (3/5): On one visit, I sat at a table. On the other visit, I sat at the bar. Service both times has been friendly, but a bit slow. And a pet peeve: on my most recent visit, I stopped by on a Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The restaurant was busy and I was told there would be a 15-20 minute wait. Before going to the bar, which is first come, first served, I went to the restroom. While I was walking there, I noticed that several tables were open. It doesn't seem like they were reserved. Why give a wait time when you have open tables? Drinks (4.5/5): Another area where Barrio Queen shines. They have a creative list of craft cocktails, many of which have Mexican ingredients. So we're talking a heavy focus on tequila, mezcal, jalapeno, and more. They also have seasonal offerings. On my most recent visit, I tried one of the seasonal cocktails that had activated charcoal in it. This was my first time drinking a black cocktail. So cool! They also have a solid happy hour with discounts off of both drinks and food. Food (3/5): On my first visit, I did the pick three tacos (love the variety) and some elote. On my second visit, I did the combination fajitas (chicken, beef, and shrimp). Fajitas are one of my go-tos at Mexican restaurants and I was happy that they are an all-day special on Thursdays (with a nice discount). This sizzling platter of meat is served with grilled veggies, rice, beans, green salsa, and warm tortillas. First, the good. The tortillas are warm and fresh. They are relatively small, and they only give you three of them, so I had to ask for more. The shrimp was perfectly grilled and a good size. The chicken and beef, on the other hand, were underwhelming. The meat was dry and poorly seasoned. Overall, some of the most mediocre fajitas I've had. And I know a thing or two about fajitas because I'm from Houston, where they were invented. Maybe I just visited on an off night. Given the ambiance, Barrio Queen makes for a nice date spot. The drinks are on point, but the food menu can be a hit or a miss.

This was my first visit to the Desert Ridge Barrio Queen. This location is huge with a large patio out front - great ambiance throughout the restaurant. I wanted something small-ish so I ordered the Grilled Quesadillas ($9) with chicken added for an additional $6. I liked the unique presentation: they almost look like three small, rolled up burritos. It makes them easy to eat and dip in the accompanying crema and salsa they give you. (I swapped out avocado crema for regular crema.) It's a little expensive for what you get but that seems to be the case at most restaurants these days. I was meeting a friend - the chip bowl stayed full and the food tasted good so it made for a nice place to have lunch.

Been to Barrio Queen several times. Ordered from them on ubereats too. This location is pretty huge, can seat a lot of people and has outdoor patio as well. Love seating out on the patio during the cooler months. Came here for dinner with a huge party, 13+ people and the service was good. The server was attentive, food and drinks came out shortly after ordering. We did have to ask for refills on chips and salsa. My go to are the street tacos and my favorite is the quesabirria tacos with consome. However, this time around the tacos came out not as hot. Probably because we had a huge group. We also ordered the classic gauc and the queso dip. For dessert, we ordered the churros and those came out hot and fresh.

Sat on the patio in the shade. Great weather and they turned off the misters as soon as it got cooler. The patio is nice with large bulb lighting on the side and a nice tree in the middle. Ricardo our server was extremely friendly, probably came to the table eight times from start to finish checking on us and each time chatted for a bit. The chips were the old thick style, too heavy for me, although tasty. The standard salsa is very mild and then the habanero one is way too spicy. They need a Goldilocks version! The Molcajete Mixto was an enormous portion chock full of everything! Grilled shrimp, chicken, steak, panela cheese planks, cactus, sweet peppers, rice and beans. More than enough for two! We asked if I could get pork chile verde on my salad and they said yes! The pork was flavorful and it went well with the black beans, sautéed peppers and lettuce. The Paloma Hibiscus drink was well balanced and not too sweet. The BlackBerry mule was very strong and the peach drink was actually frozen but didn't state that on the menu. The jalapeño Margarita was not spicy or flavorful enough the first round and we asked for more heavy handed muddling and the second was much tastier! The caramel filled churros were very rich!although I didn't care for the cinnamon flavor in the thick caramel drizzle as it was grainy. The menu is very extensive, almost too big! We will likely return especially to try the Happy Hour menu.

I came here for lunch a while back and LOVED it! We decided to sit on the patio as the inside seemed a bit loud. To drink, we both decided on sangria. I could have sat there all day drinking it, it was so refreshing! We started with the guacamole which is prepared tableside to your liking. It was excellent and very flavorful and fresh. For lunch, we both decided on the chopped salad...mine with carne asada and hers with shrimp. I dream about that salad! It was the perfect mix of ingredients and every bite was bursting with flavor. I highly recommend this restaurant and cannot wait to return! read more

The fam and I thought we'd give this place a go after talking to a good friend that said it was very good. It has a cool motif of dia de los muertos throughout the restaurant. We were promptly seated and given menus to peruse. Our server, I'm sorry I can't remember her name, arrived and took our drink orders and delivered three heaping baskets of chips and salsas. They do have a habenero salsa as an option if you ask for it. Must bueno! After several return trips, our server took our order. I ordered the special steak tacos and some charro beans. The wife ordered some enchilladas with shrimp. My son ordered a steak burrito. And after a few more accommodating stops, the server returned to inform us our food will be out shortly as some items took longer to cook. Well a brief five minutes later, our food arrived. It was two tacos served street style on blue corn tortillas. They were delicious and full of meat topped with onion, cilantro, and some sauce. The beans were some of the best I have ever had. They seemed to have a bit of chorizo in them with a hint of shrimp. The Mrs and son had zero complaints as well. So, food will get four stars. But, the service should get five stars!!!! I really wish I could remember her name because she deserves big kudos for the excellent service she gave my family and myself. Well be back, and next time I'm taking notes!! read more

Visiting Peoria Az from Dallas Tx in search of a Mexican restaurant. Upon my arrival to the restaurant, I requested outdoor patio seating for 9, I was informed of 25min wait but we were accommodated within 15 min. Our table was situated under the sun which staff remedied quickly for our request of umbrellas. .Restaurant had an extensive menu to choose from. All the food ordered for our table were gastronomically good. Luke, our waiter provided us with excellent service. He remained on top with his his game from beginning to the end. One of what I like to observe about a restaurant is how well staff members work together and to see if a manager helping. Kudos to Anthony, Manager on duty! This local chain is taking Phoenix by storm - and for good reason: good service, attention to details, quality ingredients and an interesting menu. So far one of my favorite places I've discovered in the Phoenix area! My friend and I stopped by for happy hour and a light dinner before we did a little Friday night shopping. We waited about 15 minutes for our table and were seated on the patio. We got there with enough time to order Happy Hour margaritas. One of the better ones I've had since here! Then we opted for tacos. My friend describes them as "artfully prepared" and I have to agree. I tried a grilled shrimp taco, the cochinita pibil (slow-cooked pork) and the carne asada with chile relleno. The chile relleno with the carne asada is a roasted jalapeno which brings a necessary bit of heat to the taco. I liked that very much. But of course my fave is what they're known for: the cochinita. Try it in a taco or burrito - it's truly flavorful and tender. They pay great attention to detail, like fresh-made chips accompanied by fresh lime that you squeeze on to add a little extra bit of flavor. And the salsa was terrific, at least to my taste. I would definitely return and would recommend that you try one of the spots near you - they have locations in Scottsdale, Gilbert and north Phoenix at Desert Ridge shopping area. If you're looking for top quality Mexican food, this is the place to go. The table side guacamole is expensive, but tasty. Love the addition of pomegranate seeds. Great quality chips and salsa as well. If you're vegan, try the chile relleno de vegetales made vegan style....excellent flavors. I had eaten here multiple times before I went vegan and enjoyed everything I tried. Now that I'm vegan, I just wish they had a vegan dessert. read more

Wavering between 3-4 stars. This place is soooooo adorable. The atmosphere is really great. But the food was good, not great, and overpriced (in my opinion). I read other reviews which complained about slow service which we did not experience. The waitress greeted us promptly. We each ordered a draft beer and she brought chips and salsa then returned with our beer. The chips weren't my favorite - thick and a little greasy - but the salsa was good. They had a lot of margaritas on the menu and I was tempted to have a Paloma but it was $18 and I just don't see spending that much on a drink. That wasn't even the most expensive drink, either! I ordered the Arizona burrito which was $12 and was green chili pork and smothered with a really good green sauce. It was huge. I put my fork on the plate with the photo to show the size of it. The pork was a little fatty for my liking but that is the traditional way it's made so I really can't complain. Hubby ordered the Azteca burrito which was also $12. Also humongous. It was beef brisket and rice and had a red sauce on half and green sauce on the other half. He also said it was good. We both only ate half and brought the rest home for another meal. $48 before tip for 2 burritos and 2 draft beers seemed pricey though. I might go back during a nice afternoon for happy hour on their great patio. Also the guacamole is supposed to be amazing but there were only the 2 of us and it was $14 they do prepare it table side). read more

Maya was our waitress and she was very good. We waited 40 minutes for a table but was good with that because of good recommendations. Chips and salsa were very good. Don't order a frozen drink, they don't serve them, lose a star! Cheese appetizer just ok. Chicken enchilada ok, mole sauce not too good, lose a star. Three tacos, chicken and beef were not very good, lose another star. There are many Mexican restaurants better than this. Won't be back!!! read more

10/10, our favorite Mexican restaurant! We always have such a great experience and such a great atmosphere. Food is phenomenal and service is always so good. But this time, our bartender Isaiah R. gave us a whole new experience. He was very personable, great at multitasking, and made sure we were having the best time we could have 12/10. We are from Chgo and were looking for a good authentic Mexican Restaurant. We love Freda and Day if the Dead Art, and saw this restaurant by this mall area. Theres even more artistic drawings inside with humorous lines.The food is amazing ! Oue server Horacio L. was very accomadating to the children in our group.We know our Mexican food, and our host recommended a more spicier salsa with our chips. Manager was rude and not helpful. Discovered that our takeout order was missing a major item when I got home. Returned to the restaurant and the manager said she packed the order herself and the item in question was in the bag. She did end up giving me the missing item, but shoved it into my hand and still insisted that it was in my original order, basically calling me a liar. No apology, no nothing. read more

Oh barrio queen, you have renewed my faith and Mexican food. Thank you O so much. Being that I have relocated here from Norcal, and I'm quite happy about it. I have not had decent Mexican food since I used to visit my daughter in Southern California for many years in San Diego when she was attending UCSD. I wouldn't even bother eating Mexican food in Norcal for it was a waste of calories and time. You're cuisine is spot on delicious. Your pezole and lobster tacos are absolutely phenomenal. How are usually can tell a good southwestern restaurant is by their salsa and, oh man, you sure have it! Your spicy salsa is tremendously fantastic. You have prepared you are chips to perfection which is a good indication on how the rest of the quizzing is going to be. This place is absolutely fantastic! A group of 8 of us went on a Friday evening. My husband & I arrived early and our friends /family were running late. I must say that we were greatful to be able to sit at our table and have a cocktail while we waited despite the fact that everyone in our party hadn't arrived yet. We Loovved the salsa! Several different dishes were ordered once everyone arrived. Carne Asada, Barrio Pollo, Cochinita Pibil & Table side guacamole. All were authenticly delicious! I enjoyed it so much that I almost didn't want to share A few of us enjoyed the jalapeno margaritas which were BOMB! I can't wait to visit again! My family and I went to Barrio Queen this evening and had a wonderful evening and meal! Our server Justin was phenomenal! We had several food allergies, he was extremely knowledgeable and double checked everything with the kitchen which resulted in us all having such a pleasant experience without any sickness! When we return we will DEFINITELY ask for Justin again and cannot wait to return! read more

I visited Barrio Queen for the second time last Friday. Both times were delicious! From the chips and salsa to the dessert, we were not disappointed. We had the tacos this time. Our waiter recommended a few options, which we really enjoyed. The pescado asado tacos had perfectly grilled fish, the barrio polo is perfectly seasoned with just a touch of spice, and the carne asada y chile relleno is packed with flavor. We shared the dulce de leche creme brulee after dinner. It was heaven! It was rich, creamy, and perfectly crystallized on top. Despite its size, we couldn't finish the entire thing. But I recommend you get it, share it, and savor every bite. Our server Dustin made the experience even more enjoyable. He made terrific recommendations. He was attentive and personable. It's always nice when you get a great server that knows what he's doing! The only drawback to this location is the long wait for a table (it's worth it) and the noise level inside. It can get pretty loud inside and hard to have a conversation. Despite that, I'll be back for more tacos! read more

I had to come back again since I was in the vicinity. The al pastor tacos are simply amazing. I also had the cochinita pibil and it was just as delicious, but I still think the al pastor is the best. First let me say that we are regulars, at least once a week, usually during Taco Tuesday. We love sitting at the bar and talking with the bartenders, watching sports on the TV and people watching. The food is usually great. On occasion, we have had an issue with our order, but it has always been corrected. However, last night we were in for our usual Taco Tuesday visit, and I ordered the Barrio Queso Burger. This is a great burger that is made with beef and chorizo. We were told they were going to be taking it off the menu within the next few weeks, so I wanted to have it one more time before it was gone for good. However, when the server brought it out, and we tasted it, there was absolutely no chorizo in it at all. We mentioned this to one of the bartenders and they had the manager come over and talk to us. He said he would check into and get back with us, as we were not happy with the lack of flavor. Unfortunately, the manager never returned. So we paid our bill and left feeling very dissatisfied in how this issue was handled, or should I say, NOT handled. I was really looking forward to a great meal at the Desert Ridge location with my girlfriends to celebrate birthday dinner , but unfortunately, this visit fell completely flat. For the premium prices they charge, the overall experience simply did not deliver.The service was incredibly slow and disorganized. We spent a significant amount of time waiting just to have our orders taken, and getting refills or checking in with our server felt like an uphill battle. When the food finally arrived, it was lukewarm, wrong dish and lacked the bold, authentic flavor you expect from a spot with this much hype.While the restaurant itself has a vibrant look and a nice atmosphere, the poor service and subpar food quality completely ruined the night. There are far better options for Mexican food in the area where your time and money are actually valued. I won't be returning to this location anytime soon. read more

Barrio Queen is nothing special and was an average experience at best. The food was okay but not great. Very bland and lacked flavor. The staff were very slow and non-responsive. We had a group of 10 and were seated in a large booth area that was nice. Unfortunately, the ledges behind the booth area were dusty and had dead flies. It was obvious this area had not been cleaned for some time. To top it off the prices are too high for the food, service, and atmosphere. There are many better food options in Desert Ridge to consider. Barrio Queen needs to improve in many areas to stand out in a location where there are many options to eat. I do NOT recommend Barrio Queen. If I had to narrow it down to one word it would be...lackluster. read more

Unfortunately, the food at this restaurant left much to be desired. The flavors were disappointingly bland, as we found with both the enchiladas and tacos. However, the salsa was a notable exception, and the margaritas were outstanding. Our server, a friendly and fun woman from Louisiana, provided excellent service. Regrettably, the young lady who greeted us lacked enthusiasm for her job and seemed disinterested in us as customers. In summary, we may return to this restaurant for pre-cinema drinks with chips and salsa, but we would not consider it for lunch or dinner due to the uninspiring food. With numerous other dining options in Scottsdale, we would likely explore those alternatives instead. read more

WAIT WAIT WAIT!! All you do here is wait. My husband and I went in last night and we walk in and it's not even busy but we stand at the host stand for 6 minutes before even being acknowledged! No hi how are you, no welcome in, just a "follow me." by a stern hostess/worker. After having your menus slammed onto the table and no other words exchanged you wait another 10 minutes before your server even comes and notices you! I wish I caught her name because WOW! Rude much??? All I constantly saw was her pink hair at every table except ours. Food came out and was hot and yummy, but wow. I think we spent more time waiting than actually enjoying our food. It was a great experience and the food was top notch! Barrio made my trip wonderful! The best tacos I've had in Phoenix by far. They also have excellent chips and salsa, queso fundido, and dulce de leche churros. The tacos are pretty small, but reasonably priced, which is perfect since I'm always indecisive and want a little bit of everything. Staff was welcoming and helpful in asking questions and making suggestions. Dustin at the bar had a smile the entire time as he was preparing for close without missing a water refill or noticing my wife needed a straw. Colorful and very pleasant atmosphere. Wonderful! How can we describe this place??? Well: great food, unique and exquisite atmosphere and delightful staff (Jessica took real good care of us... I would take her to Germany if I could)! By the way: only one complain: we need a Barrio Queen in Germany! And a cook book for those of us who are unfortunate to live far from this delightful restaurant! Congratulations to the team! Amazing tacos and margaritas! My husband and I came last weekend - he had the beef burrito and I had the street tacos (tinga and mar y tierra). Both were outstanding! The beef burrito was massive and my husband couldn't finish it all. We also had the house margarita and it was delicious. Their chips and salsa are also some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant. Their patio is beautiful as well. Highly recommend this place! read more

Open late and great quality food. Would recommend! Favorite items include the Barrio guacamole which is prepared in front of you, a refreshing jamaica drink, and their variety of tacos. I usually choose 3 different tacos such as grilled or battered shrimp, suadero azteca which is slow cooked beef birria, and carne asada! Ambiance is great! Food was delicious! Our server Angel Q was amazing and very kind. He got a group of servers together to sing happy birthday to you daughter. Reservations don't really do much for you, we had to wait at least 30 minutes after our reservation time to get seated along with at minimum 5 other groups who had the same thing happen. I was having a late lunch at barrio queen. Amazing service and delicious food. Unfortunately my experience was ruined by a obnoxious couple at the bar. They were talking very rudely about the hostess staff and using very vulgar language. Can't believe people my age cannot follow restaurant policies. It was an amazing experience, and the food was outstanding! Barrio made my trip unforgettable with the best tacos I've had in Phoenix. They also offer fantastic chips and salsa, queso fundido, and dulce de leche churros. My very first time at this restaurant was quite great , my server was Angel and he is one of the nicest, polite and charismatic person I know and he is bilingual so when I took my family they felt very comfortable.
