Good southwest eatery, lots of options, and tasty drinks. On a pre-game drop in, and coming off a nice nap, we tried Barrio Queen. A very nice catrina themed Mexican restaurant. It was just before lunch, but the place wasn't too busy, and we were seated promptly by the host. Our server, Valentina V. (Tina), was quick to present us with menus, chips and (tasty) salsa, and take out orders. She was on it - makes a mean guac. I wanted to try their tacos, and Liz did try two shrimp tacos that looked really good. Noemi enjoyed her kids chicken quesadilla, nothing too complicated there. Noah tried the Tamale Duo. The tamale duo came with one chicken in red sauce tamale, and one green chile pork tamale with rice and beans. He put a good dent in it for sure, meaning he really liked it. I enjoyed my birria enchiladas plate. The cheese and birria enchiladas were covered in green chile. It was pretty good, and I didn't leave anybody any bites. Tina checked on us throughout the meal, and make sure to take care of us during our time there. We left full and happy. I'd come to back to try their bar, and probably a variety of their tacos.

Our first time and I was really hoping we would love it- my husband Loves Mexican food!! Unfortunately, it was a lackluster experience. Our server was obviously rushed it seemed, we ordered our drinks- we loved my husband's mocktail!! The tacos arrived and they were nicely presented and warm. But, they weren't the most flavorful tacos. The rice and beans were so bland- I thought why bother with the calories!! Yikes! Not the experience we were hoping for- but, sometimes you try new things and are disappointed....Darn!

Went on a Monday for Lunch and sat outside on the patio. The weather was nice and scene was pretty. -Chips and salsa are amazing! -Great iced tea options. -Menu is huge and full of options. -I added shrimp as an extra Add-on to my salad and was sad to see I only like 4 shrimp. - next time I will go back to my regular order of posole, the salad was not worth the spend. Note to moms: there is a changing table in the women's restroom! Feedback to Management: - lower the volume on the patio, it was too loud, like gave me anxiety while I was eating. - speed of service needed to be improved

This was a lovely, solid Mexican food joint! Ambiance is great when you walk in - lots of indoor and outdoor seating options with themed decor and a couple of tv's near the bar for sports viewing. We were seated after a thirty minute wait (dinner rush on Friday night) but attended to promptly. The free chips and salsa are bomb. Salsa is delicious and the chips feel lighter than most tortilla chips. They have a good variety of drinks and Mexican food on their menu. I ordered three tacos for $5.50 each (birria, tacos de tinga, and carne asada) and my boyfriend ordered the birria enchiladas. My favorite tacos were definitely the birria - very juicy and soupy, but the other tacos were flavorful and not bad. The carne asada tacos were very chewy. My boyfriend also enjoyed his birria enchiladas. It was a big enough serving that he was able to take some home in a box. Overall, a great pick in Desert Ridge. Appreciated that they also accepted a military discount here too.

My overall feelings about Barrio Queen is that there are some things to like and some things not to like. Overall, it's a pleasant experience, but it leaves a little to be desired. I've checked out this trendy Mexican joint twice: both on weekdays. Located in Desert Ridge Marketplace, parking won't be an issue. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is one of the areas where Barrio Queen shines. It's a large restaurant with a spacious patio, a bar that's partially outside and inside, and plenty of seating indoors. There are both tables and booths. The decor is really cool too, with a decent amount of Dia de Los Muertos stuff. Service (3/5): On one visit, I sat at a table. On the other visit, I sat at the bar. Service both times has been friendly, but a bit slow. And a pet peeve: on my most recent visit, I stopped by on a Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The restaurant was busy and I was told there would be a 15-20 minute wait. Before going to the bar, which is first come, first served, I went to the restroom. While I was walking there, I noticed that several tables were open. It doesn't seem like they were reserved. Why give a wait time when you have open tables? Drinks (4.5/5): Another area where Barrio Queen shines. They have a creative list of craft cocktails, many of which have Mexican ingredients. So we're talking a heavy focus on tequila, mezcal, jalapeno, and more. They also have seasonal offerings. On my most recent visit, I tried one of the seasonal cocktails that had activated charcoal in it. This was my first time drinking a black cocktail. So cool! They also have a solid happy hour with discounts off of both drinks and food. Food (3/5): On my first visit, I did the pick three tacos (love the variety) and some elote. On my second visit, I did the combination fajitas (chicken, beef, and shrimp). Fajitas are one of my go-tos at Mexican restaurants and I was happy that they are an all-day special on Thursdays (with a nice discount). This sizzling platter of meat is served with grilled veggies, rice, beans, green salsa, and warm tortillas. First, the good. The tortillas are warm and fresh. They are relatively small, and they only give you three of them, so I had to ask for more. The shrimp was perfectly grilled and a good size. The chicken and beef, on the other hand, were underwhelming. The meat was dry and poorly seasoned. Overall, some of the most mediocre fajitas I've had. And I know a thing or two about fajitas because I'm from Houston, where they were invented. Maybe I just visited on an off night. Given the ambiance, Barrio Queen makes for a nice date spot. The drinks are on point, but the food menu can be a hit or a miss.

This was my first visit to the Desert Ridge Barrio Queen. This location is huge with a large patio out front - great ambiance throughout the restaurant. I wanted something small-ish so I ordered the Grilled Quesadillas ($9) with chicken added for an additional $6. I liked the unique presentation: they almost look like three small, rolled up burritos. It makes them easy to eat and dip in the accompanying crema and salsa they give you. (I swapped out avocado crema for regular crema.) It's a little expensive for what you get but that seems to be the case at most restaurants these days. I was meeting a friend - the chip bowl stayed full and the food tasted good so it made for a nice place to have lunch.

Been to Barrio Queen several times. Ordered from them on ubereats too. This location is pretty huge, can seat a lot of people and has outdoor patio as well. Love seating out on the patio during the cooler months. Came here for dinner with a huge party, 13+ people and the service was good. The server was attentive, food and drinks came out shortly after ordering. We did have to ask for refills on chips and salsa. My go to are the street tacos and my favorite is the quesabirria tacos with consome. However, this time around the tacos came out not as hot. Probably because we had a huge group. We also ordered the classic gauc and the queso dip. For dessert, we ordered the churros and those came out hot and fresh.

Sat on the patio in the shade. Great weather and they turned off the misters as soon as it got cooler. The patio is nice with large bulb lighting on the side and a nice tree in the middle. Ricardo our server was extremely friendly, probably came to the table eight times from start to finish checking on us and each time chatted for a bit. The chips were the old thick style, too heavy for me, although tasty. The standard salsa is very mild and then the habanero one is way too spicy. They need a Goldilocks version! The Molcajete Mixto was an enormous portion chock full of everything! Grilled shrimp, chicken, steak, panela cheese planks, cactus, sweet peppers, rice and beans. More than enough for two! We asked if I could get pork chile verde on my salad and they said yes! The pork was flavorful and it went well with the black beans, sautéed peppers and lettuce. The Paloma Hibiscus drink was well balanced and not too sweet. The BlackBerry mule was very strong and the peach drink was actually frozen but didn't state that on the menu. The jalapeño Margarita was not spicy or flavorful enough the first round and we asked for more heavy handed muddling and the second was much tastier! The caramel filled churros were very rich!although I didn't care for the cinnamon flavor in the thick caramel drizzle as it was grainy. The menu is very extensive, almost too big! We will likely return especially to try the Happy Hour menu.

BLECH!! I grew up and lived on the border most of my life and love Mexican food! I recently moved here from Austin and wanted to try a "Chuys" clone. Barrio Queen ISNT. First appetizer was the corn. OMG how horrible! Corn with bottled Tampico sauce splashed all over it with a tiny bit of cojita cheese. No crema, no mayo just Tampico. Then the bus boy called someone that worked their a fucking white guy in Spanish. That was interesting.... And the food came. BLECH again! My husband ordered the enchiladas with mole... By far the worst mole I have ever had! So sweet and the chili they used was OLD old old. It was like they squeezed Hersheys syrup and added very old chili. OMG it was absolutely the worst. Now for my dish. Steak tampicoquena (Tampico), a piece of over cooked fajita meat with green chili on top for $23 no mennito cheese and over cooked crappy meat. The trendy black beans were chalky..They rice dry as hell with no corn, peas or anything. OH forgot the salsa! I have never had such a bland lifeless salsa since I tried a Mexican place in Ohio! But that was OHIO. Not a short drive to the border with a robust Hispanic population. I won't be back but I will be happy to teach your "chef" how to create wonderful real mexican food. My first would be the menudo! Gotta give them kudos it didn't taste like 'caca' but it had a strange sweetness that was repulsive and they used canned posole. All at a Premium price. If you want good Mexican food don't go here. Or go to any tiny place that actually cares about their food. My offered to teach your chef stands. EDIT response to owner: I did say something to the server as we where leaving and I even spoke to the other bus person (in Spanish) and he knew I understood everything that was said. I did not want anything as per a discount so we just informed our waitress and left.. We were checking out the place for a group of people coming in town next week and sorry I will not be back. As for real a Mexican soul food may I suggest you taste your food. Or go learn from your abuela. Even your salsa is a disgrace. I would also instruct your staff to watch their mouths someone might know what pinche guedo means.. Edit: Now I am getting harrassed by a user named Don P. via yelp about this review.. I had a great service experience, but a lack luster food experience this evening. Showed up around 5:40pm for HH, which runs 2pm-6pm Mon- Fri. They offer complimentary chips and salsa- I recommend requesting the habanero salsa, which has a nice delayed kick vs their regular salsa, which is also pretty good. Chips seem to be homemade but nothing to write home about. I ordered the Pork Tinga Poblano Pepper $7 and Quesadilla Con Pollo $7 for dinner. Both options were just ok- I preferred the Quesadilla over the Pepper. My waitress recommended the roasted Elote (grilled corn), Puerco Verde Cup and mini tortas. Will be back to try other options. Tried their casa margarita $6 on HH- it was decent. They also offer red and white wine $5 glass and Mexican beer $4 for 16 oz beers or 1/2 odd select Tequilas read more

It seems like this place should be a delightful, semi-expensive Mexican place with delicious margaritas, and the margaritas are indeed delicious. Unfortunately, that's where it stops - the food is consistently meh, and for the price point, it's just not worth it. Barrio has a great outdoor seating area the bar is large as well. Happy hour drink are a great deal! Wish they would work on food selections. Can't menu and obviously taco are very good. I chose three tacos for $12. My favorite of the three was carna asada y hue is. Now I was hesitant to get this but was in a outgoing mood. Meat is tender egg cooked perfectly. Great taco. I love enchiladas, but the only disappointment was prices on those dishes anywhere from 18$-24$. Maybe I am a little old school, but Mexican food is when you want good quality food on a budget. What a great experience at Barrio Queen -- especially with our wonderful server Maya! My mom kept begging me to try this place with her and I finally gave in. Well, I sure am glad I did because we had an amazing meal. The environment was easily one of the coolest parts about this place. You'll have to see for yourself. Our server Maya was so educated in the menu and was able to give some great suggestions. I ordered a dish that my friend ended up liking more than her own, so she stole quite a few bites off my plate! Do yourself a favor and order the quac and chips because they'll make it right in front of you and it includes pomegranates... yum! Also, don't turn away their offer for chips and salsa... their salsa is hands down my new favorite salsa and I've tried quite a bit before. 10/10 recommend! I want to go back! read more

We've been here many times and tried many different dishes and it never disappoints! Our faves include the Barrio Guacamole made tableside with pomegranate seeds and Churros for dessert. One of our favorite servers is Angelo, he always makes sure to provide and authentic and amazing experience. read more

A few different things about this place, the location and atmosphere are great! The patio area is very spacious and great for a birthday dinner or date night. However, the only downside is this place gets VERY busy and they don't take reservations so the wait is veryyyy long. The service has been decent both times It's been, great when it was just two people but not so great with a little larger crowd. The food is really good and easy to share a plate, and a wide variety of traditional Mexican food and one of the best skinny margaritas I've ever had! read more

Alycea was our server for the evening and she was definitely on top of trying to keep us happy! However, the food is definitely was topped off the night. Absolutely amazing. The salsa for the table was delicious.. the chips were a bit greasy for our taste. I ordered the 3 tacos for $11- the cochitas house special (best of the 3), the pastor and fish tacos. And my fiancé ordered the Aztecs burrito... TOTALLY worth it. The meat was beyond and above! We will for sure be back. read more

If your looking for a nice relaxing place to eat this is high on the list. The ambiance of the restaurant is great, staff is well trained in customer service and the food quality is great. There are lots of menus options including plenty of tasty vegetarian dishes too. All the dishes we have had at Barrio Queen have been perfectly cooked, plated and taste amazing. Today we enjoyed a house margarita and Chile Relleno De Vegetales. So much fresh flavor! read more

I had heard about the problems when this place opened since I used to work at desert ridge. I do not see what the hype is all about now. Almost a 2hr wait for inside seating and 30 minutes for outside seating on a saturday night at 630pm. Not bad but it was chaos with the hostesses and the front door clutter. we asked for an outdoor table due to the wait being shorter but we were given an inside table ok no big deal. we were seated by the kitchen near a large group. It took 15 minutes to get water, chips and salsa. Our server would disappear for long amounts of time. at least 20 minutes between drinks, appetizers and meal ordering. The drink i had did not taste like it had any alcohol in it so that was disappointing. we ordered the queso and we got 3 tortillas for it. the grease was heavy in it. I barely remembered what i ordered since i was rushed through that process and so was my husband since it is a large menu. so i ordered something i thought sounded good on paper but ended up a disaster. thank god i filled up on chips before dinner. I would not recommend this place for any busy times or dinner. i had to yell to my husband sitting across from me since it was so loud inside. We tried it gave it a shot and will not be returning anytime soon. I would rather find another Mexican restaurant than this place. not worth the time or money. Its bad to say i would rather have taco bell than this place. read more

The food was not very good and the service was less than stellar. They were very busy and clearly needed more staff. It was disappointing to wait an hour to eat there (when we were quoted less) and then pay $54 for food that was not so great. We won't be back. Update: Barrio Queen contacted me and asked if they could send me a gift card to try them again and reconsider my review. I was pleasantly surprised that someone reached out to try to make our situation right. However, I was disappointed when they gave me a gift card for $25 when we are a family of four and paid double that on our first visit. I will not be using the gift card to reconsider. I am not willing to spend any more of my money to try them out again. read more

Just ok. Waited 45 minutes for table even though we were told 30 minutes. Food was ok. House specials were good. Overpriced for the food received. Steak Enchiladas not good, actually got an upset stomach from them. Very little steak inside the enchiladas. The tampiquena steak was good. The house special burrito was good. Sunday live music was excellent! Overall, would not come here to dine again but would come to listen to music and have a few drinks. read more

In town for work. Ventured out of hotel for Mexican food. Hostesses greeted us with smiles. Went on a Tuesday and there was a mariachi band playing. Sat out on patio. My friend had a margarita on the rocks. The only thing she didn't like about it was the small glass it came in! The chips & salsa were amazing. Homemade chips were warm and fluffy. Salsa was flavorful but could use a little more heat. I did not ask for hotter, however. Pulled chicken enchiladas with mole' were the best I've ever had. Amazing. Reasonably priced as well. Fun server and we bought a fun shirt with restaurant name & saying on it. 5 stars! read more

I am giving two stars based on ambience and the chairs being comfortable as those were ghee only two things we enjoyed. My husband ordered a drink with upgraded tequila and was charged an additional $4 for it. Its not that the additional charge is an issue its that a shot of the upgraded tequila was the same as a shot of the tequila that came with the regular margarita... the math is just off here. We ordered entrees and appetizers of which the appetizers came out about one minute prior to the entrees. I saw this happen to other tables around me as well so this is their normal process. Makes me wonder if the food just isn't sitting there in the back ready to go waiting for an order? All of which would have been forgiven if any of it was good. The food is SUPER oily. My husband's shrimp dish had a layer of oil on the plate. Why? There is also just a lack of flavor. The Chili Verde is mediocre, rice and beans are boring, salsas were uninspired and the chips are oily. We left feeling completely unsatisfied with the entire thing. If you are hungry and you want to get some really good so this is definitely the place that you want to come too. I like coming here on the weekend because there are so many people and you can just kind of sit back and really congregate with a lot of people and make some new friends. This is also a really good place if you just want to sit back and relax and of life it's been a little bit of time to yourself because they do have some pretty quiet areas inside the eating space read more

Dine in is the way to go. My wife and I love going there and always enjoy the food and drinks. However...Don't do take-out. The $17 Guacamole is extremely Overpriced for the to-go portion. I make guacamole all the time and I think they gave me 1 avocados worth and literally gave me 6 chips. The carne Asada enchiladas were so gristly throughout that they were inedible. Have always come here with my family, but this past experience was perfect. The food was good, but our server, Angel, was amazing! This place has a nice ambience and the taco Tuesday special is nice ($3 for non-premium tacos). HOWEVER, they charge for soft drink refills? Then when I ordered from the bar I was told they don't offer frozen margaritas????? Only rocks. Seriously? If you're gonna charge $3.50 for a coke refill, buy a damned blender!!! Tonight's visit was my second. The tacos were good, as they were the first time. There was a minor error with my order but not a huge deal. Based on the taste and the Taco Tuesday pricing, tonight's visit earned a 3 out of 5 overall. Like I said, it's a nice location in Desert Ridge but a couple miles down Cave Creek road you can get more food for the money at Valle Luna, and most importantly, they know how to crush ice at the bar. read more

It's a busy place, but I did not have an enjoyable experience here. I have a tomato allergy high puts enormous limitations on what I can have, but have always been given safe alternatives at any other restaurant I have ever gone to. At Barrio Queen, I was given dry chicken on a dry corn tortilla with a sprinkle of cheese and a smattering of sour cream. There was a total lack of creativity or effort to please the customer. We really enjoy frequenting this establishment at Desert Ridge. It's totally a modern Mexican modern vibe inside with some very interesting decorative touches. The patio is colorful and fun with misters and heaters depending on the weather. I must say they have an excellent happy hour. Their prices are very competitive and their chips and salsa are so spot on! Their food definitely has a distinctive spicy flavor. This place is not your average Mexican restaurant smothered in fake cheese and sour cream. The portions are not massive. It's more like smaller or medium size portions. First time at one of the Barrio restaurants. The hostess staff was fantastic. I was bringing in a large group and called the day before and they told me what a good trick would be to make sure I got a table for 10 people at 7 o'clock. I waited at the bar and had a drink and the table was ready before I knew it. We had a wonderful table outside that was perfect for our group. The only issue that I had was that I was not impressed with the food that I ordered. I ordered the specialty off of the entrée menu and it just wasn't very good. First let me say that we are regulars, at least once a week, usually during Taco Tuesday. We love sitting at the bar and talking with the bartenders, watching sports on the TV and people watching. The food is usually great. On occasion, we have had an issue with our order, but it has always been corrected. However, last night we were in for our usual Taco Tuesday visit, and I ordered the Barrio Queso Burger. This is a great burger that is made with beef and chorizo. We were told they were going to be taking it off the menu within the next few weeks, so I wanted to have it one more time before it was gone for good. However, when the server brought it out, and we tasted it, there was absolutely no chorizo in it at all. We mentioned this to one of the bartenders and they had the manager come over and talk to us. He said he would check into and get back with us, as we were not happy with the lack of flavor. Unfortunately, the manager never returned. So we paid our bill and left feeling very dissatisfied in how this issue was handled, or should I say, NOT handled. We will probably continue to visit on a regular basis, but our feeling about being appreciated as customers has changed. read more

When the food finally arrived, it was lukewarm, wrong dish and lacked the bold, authentic flavor you expect from a spot with this much hype.While the restaurant itself has a vibrant look and a nice atmosphere, the poor service and subpar food quality completely ruined the night. We had a group of 10 and were seated in a large booth area that was nice. Unfortunately, the ledges behind the booth area were dusty and had dead flies. It was obvious this area had not been cleaned for some time. To top it off the prices are too high for the food, service, and atmosphere. There are many better food options in Desert Ridge to consider. Barrio Queen needs to improve in many areas to stand out in a location where there are many options to eat. Unfortunately, the food at this restaurant left much to be desired. The flavors were disappointingly bland, as we found with both the enchiladas and tacos. However, the salsa was a notable exception, and the margaritas were outstanding. Our server, a friendly and fun woman from Louisiana, provided excellent service. Regrettably, the young lady who greeted us lacked enthusiasm for her job and seemed disinterested in us as customers. In summary, we may return to this restaurant for pre-cinema drinks with chips and salsa, but we would not consider it for lunch or dinner due to the uninspiring food. They also have excellent chips and salsa, queso fundido, and dulce de leche churros. The tacos are pretty small, but reasonably priced, which is perfect since I'm always indecisive and want a little bit of everything. Staff was welcoming and helpful in asking questions and making suggestions. Dustin at the bar had a smile the entire time as he was preparing for close without missing a water refill or noticing my wife needed a straw. Colorful and very pleasant atmosphere. Amazing tacos and margaritas! My husband and I came last weekend - he had the beef burrito and I had the street tacos (tinga and mar y tierra). Both were outstanding! The beef burrito was massive and my husband couldn't finish it all. We also had the house margarita and it was delicious. Their chips and salsa are also some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant. Their patio is beautiful as well. Highly recommend this place! read more

Reservations don't really do much for you, we had to wait at least 30 minutes after our reservation time to get seated along with at minimum 5 other groups who had the same thing happen. I was having a late lunch at barrio queen. Amazing service and delicious food. Unfortunately my experience was ruined by a obnoxious couple at the bar. They were talking very rudely about the hostess staff and using very vulgar language. Can't believe people my age cannot follow restaurant policies. They also offer fantastic chips and salsa, queso fundido, and dulce de leche churros.
