Stopped, as I was shopping nearby and looked around for "wine bars", as it's an interest. The front two rooms were reserved, so we sat in a back room. Very dark interior: dark wood and black leather under low lighting. Service wears black. We were greeted friendly. The menu was on an iPad. I went immediately to the wine offerings, my wife to the dinner menu. Some the entries were confusing - a chardonnay labeled Kari showed a label for Talbot? It was Happy Hour ($1 off drinks) so ordered a glass pour of Honoro Vera Blanco, RUEDA, SPAIN by Bodegas Juan Gil ... a white wine that was a deep yellow color with a rich body and tropical flavors - but it seemed tired, flat and the flavors somewhat bruised. Also ordered a Vino Rosso Red Blend, Charles Smith, Columbia Valley - a well respected producer. The first whiff hit my nose like vinegar! After a while it blew off a bit, but was still not exciting. We never finished either glass. Food-wise, we were intrigued by the "chicken sous vide", a half bird done in a preparation we had never tried. The accompanying American fries were hot and crisp, the roasted Brussels sprouts were tasty, but some were a little tough. The chicken was moist and flavorful but the outer meat was warm while the center was rather cold. It was OK, like being on a picnic outside. The check was thirty-ish, which is the norm nowadays. I went to Barr's during Restaurant Week, using this as an excuse to try out some new eateries in the Toledo area. We made reservations which was probably a good idea since we had a large-ish group. The whole place is small, however it's laid out well so only at it's most crowded would I imagine Barr's would be uncomfortable. The ambiance is quite and dark, though not annoyingly so. While I might not want to go here after a concert or a game, the setting is perfect for a date or more intimate meeting with close friends. The menu isn't huge, but it's diverse. The only problem I had with it was the physical aspect. There was a page for beer, a page for wine and drinks, a page for the actual menu, and a page for the restaurant week specials. Not a big deal, but in a party of more than two this many sheets became cumbersome. My wife and I ordered the bruschetta which was very nice. A little nontraditional as the bread was soft, but the addition of pungent goat cheese and prosciutto made a nice starter. Our party also shared some onion rings which were simple and delicious. The batter was light and not heavy or greasy. The last starter split amongst our group was the charcuterie plate. Nothing on it was bad and the selections were tasty, but they were also very safe. I would have hoped for something more adventurous. Because it was restaurant week, I had the steak and frites from their special menu. The steak, ordered rare, was done to temperature and was seasoned well, without over spicing and drowning out the flavor of the beef. The frites were advertised being flavored with Parmesan and truffle, which normally means fries drown in truffle oil. These were fried a nice golden color with only hint of truffle oil and a goodly amount of parm; a ratio much more pleasing than most restaurants. Finally, I topped off the meal with chocolate covered bacon. While good, I'm going to be an obnoxious trend monster and state that bacon desserts, no matter how well done, are a bit out of date. The service was great, if a tad slow on the kitchen side. However, it wasn't awful and our waiter was amazing. He kept drinks coming, was attentive, and all without being hovering and chummy. Really great wait staff (Jeff is awesome!) The beer selection was very nice with a wide variety of styles and types. The drinks menu included some great twists on classic cocktails, including a very nice take on the Dark and Stormy and a very refreshing Moscow Mule and even a wonderfully balanced Sidecar. Their more modern cocktails were creative and many sounded great. The only one I tried a bit of was the Apple Butter Bacon Manhattan. Not really my thing, but objectively it was pretty good. All in all, a great first time experience. I can defiantly see myself coming back to Barr's in the future. read more

My first time at Barr's Public House. I came in near the end of happy hour and the hostess, Meredith, was exceptionally helpful in walking me through their tablet menu. The food ordered, Kobe sliders, was prepared perfectly. My choice of drink, BPH Margaritas, were tasty with a good balance of flavor & strength. This would be a great choice for future occasions. My parents live close by to Barr's, so every time I'm home visiting I suggest stopping in. I love the atmosphere, even on a cold night it's so warm and inviting- with a great bar, and cozy tables. Came here with my husband and another couple. It was our first time dining here. The interior is nice; there are two bar rooms and a dining room, from what I could see. They play live music sometimes in the bigger bar room in the back, though there was none the night we went. It was a tag-team approach to service. I'm not sure if that's normal or because they were busy, but we had 2-3 servers helping us at various points of our meal. My old fashioned was really good, a Barr House twist on the classic. I got the shrimp tacos; the shrimp and sauce were DELICIOUS! but the "flour taco" was actually an incredibly stale piece of pita bread that crumbled apart as soon as I picked it up. Everyone else at my table said their food was pretty good. It did take about 20-30 minutes to find our waitress (at least the main server who has helped us most of the meal) to ask for the bills, wait for her to grab the cards & run them. Dinner ended up taking much longer than we anticipated, which made us late to the event we were attending after dinner. Overall, I would definitely go back to enjoy the food and check out some live music. read more

For someone who's been an ardent fan of this place for a couple years now, I'm sad to say I'm incredibly disappointed in it lately. Used to be they treated every customer with attentiveness, respect and kindness. Well, not so any more. This time we had reservations and, although we were there and seated on time (with water already at the table, thank God!), it was more than 15 minutes before someone came to our table to take a drink order. And, the service went downhill from there. There appeared to be many hostesses, but we never had an official server even identified for our table. We had to flag someone down each time we needed/wanted anything. We ordered the fish tacos, which came with a side. All of the sides she recited were potatoes, and for those with blood sugar problems, these are not an option. One guest at our table asked if they had a vegetable, and we were told that carrots were the vegetable tonight. He ordered those, but found out 9later that he was charged $2 additional for the carrots (which amounted to 1 carrot, cut into 4 pieces) even though a side came with the meal. It wouldn't have been so bad, had he been informed of this at the time he ordered. This, coupled with the fact that we had to hunt down a server THREE TIMES during our dinner, (once to get a 2nd drink, once to get the lemons we requested for our water a half hr earlier, and once to get the bill) makes this a place we won't be visiting again soon. Very sad, because we take people out frequently, and this used to be a favorite. The service and pretentious attitudes of the servers made this a 'No go to' place in our book. Even worse, because we brought new customers with us tonight, and they were just as disappointed. read more

We were prepared to take those seats to order some drinks when one of the waitresses told us that we could not sit there because someone had reservations. For the bar. Food was cold and tasteless, I don't recommend the the bistro steak sandwich! It was not steak! Trust me I know bad food! I have to eat cafeteria food for a living. I have never been served food this bad! The Miller Lite was brought in a can like some back street bar, only the cost was way more expensive! The server was pleasant but never came back or even asked how things were. The total bill was expensive. We walked in and had no idea if we were to seat ourselves or wait, so we decided screw it and found a table after being ignored by the staff. This place is just fantastic! I recommend you the Truffle fries and the coriander burger. I'm from north side France, I know a lot about good fries, those were by far the best I've ever had. The menu is displayed on a tablet so you can see what your meal actually looks like. They have a large selection of crafted beers and fine liquors. IT WAS SO BAD, IT DOESN'T DESERVE A STAR. A group of us get together once every few months. We love to try new places, and fun food and atmosphere. However, I will never recommend this place. My husbands shepherd pie was delicious, my salmon was cold, the portabella mushroom that accompanied it, was cold,one of our friends waited over minutes for a drink. The server told him multiple times it was coming. Telling him once, I get it, but take care of it, but 3-4 times is a little ridiculous. Hummus was very bland, and tasted burnt. But the kicker, a 20 % gratuity was added without them telling any one in our party. (It was noticed the next day.) The menu is digital, so it's not even stated anywhere on the food menu. So our whole party (10) tipped on top of it. The company was great, food was nothing to brag about, service was mediocre, this experience as a whole..AWFUL. don't waste your time or money. read more

My traveling companions and I were on our way back from Michigan stadium (which climbed higher on my "Least Safe Stadium in American" the longer we sat in it) and decided dinner was a necessity before we got too far into our journey. With a quick detour through Toledo, OH we decided to refill our meat tanks at Barr's Public House. As we performed our maneuver into the parking lot the outside looked appealing and the windows were just tinted enough to project the welcoming ambiance to passers-by. We chose a prime parking spot and made our approach. Initially, when I opened the door for my fellow dinner mates, I thought we were in the wrong place. The class inside was impressive. Several cabinets with glass panels displaying classy items such as wine, decor, wine, fancy glasses and wine lined the East wall. The tables in the bar area had martini glasses set out with dim tealight candles flickering in them. The bar on the West wall was even backed by mirrors with sleek James Bond style screens showing through the glass in an uncomfortably disproportionate hipster manner. The only reason I thought we were in the wrong place was because I felt like our game day stadium attire was inappropriate for the establishment, however, I caught a glimpse of a middle aged woman at the bar in a long sleeve denim shirt and assumed we wouldn't stick out too much. We were seated immediately and our server brought waters for each on his first trip to the table. We were handed small tablets/large phones that displayed the menu and beverage list. Our server also directed our attention to the blackboard that had been backed into the corner with a variety of colored chalks describing each of the featured menu items of that day. To make a short story long, I couldn't decided between several mouthwatering options and asked for an opinion of one of the bar tenders that asked if he could do anything for us I the short time that our original server stepped away. He talked me into the the smoked BBQ chicken that I would later find to be the best chicken I ordered all night. We all placed our orders once our original server returned from a brief absence. The absence was just long enough that we didn't have to look for him nor was it too soon that when he came back we wondered if he had other tables to tend to or if he was bored. Once the orders were placed we each took our turns abandoning our table to visit the restroom. There isn't much to say about the restroom other than adequate lighting, clean utilities, publicly accessible Febreze, and pebbles in the sink. Such class... The meal was phenomenal. And honestly if you are still reading this review by this point, you are either genuinely interested in this restaurant or you are too kind to abandon another man's review midway and you are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel so I will close with this: Our meals were the better than most of the other plates we had in the past few days (aside from Mama T's chicken pot pie). The service was the best service that I have had in a restaurant. The staff was all incredibly professional, kind, knowledgeable, and friendly. Anyone that we initiated a conversation with took the time to talk with us. I can't say enough even though I probably already have. Take the time to stop in and see for yourself. I love the relaxing warm atmosphere and the alternative music. Some nights they have live music. The food has been great. I have enjoyed their unique sauces and dips for their food. My second strong recommendation; BPH is in full groove. A must - Cucumber Salad... OMG. An explosion of flavor. Loaded with vegetables, bacon and a confident sprinkle of balsamic vinegotette is a flavorful treat. Treat? Not really; expect a full service salad. Comeback of the year. Went there on a late Saturday evening and sat at the bar. We started with the Thai Satay and the peanut sauce that comes with it is phenomenal. After that, the bartender made a spicy pickle shot, which I highly recommend. The bacon, heated with the butane lighter and a pickle as a chaser, just sets the drink off. Finished it with the Kobe Beef sliders and called it a night. All in all, I highly recommend Barr's Public House. Quaint atmosphere, good music and great food. We'll be back! read more
