Sweet potato gnocchi
Samantha S.

I love bartizan!! I have been here 3 times so far and plan to come back more. Love their menu - small plates. Some of my faves have been the whipped feta, sweet potato gnocchi and their tacos. Drinks are pretty good too! I love the margs. Staff is very friendly and attentive. They have outdoor seating as well as indoor and there is a free parking garage right next to the restaurant. Overall great environment and great food!

Crabcakes - too much filler

So I am really struggling with this review. I haven't given a 2 star restaurant review in I don't know how long. The 2 is a mix of the food and ultimately the experience. The reviews have been so great here and I was so looking forward to it. I'm so disappointed. We all were... First off, I would say our waitress was super kind and provided great recommendations. This review was by no fault of her. To be honest, the manager that walked up to us as we were paying last night at the end of our meal asked us how it was and said "why no dessert", and we responded we waited for over two hours for just our food... and were trying to get to our reservation at Hotel Greene that we paid for. He then proceeded on with a joke and said what's wrong with staying at Batizan all night. We were all turned off by it... and he said," why not take dessert to go".... While we didn't say this but when we pay 20... 24... for pasta and 29 for crab cakes we have some expectations of an entree not a small plate and still a little hungry there is a problem. We all had two rounds of drinks... so everyone's drinks were pretty good except for the Blackberry Bramble which I started off with first. It felt like they forgot the alcohol... and tasted like tap water with a few drops of sugar. Not sure what happened there. Then I proceeded with the Pineapple drink which was an improvement. My girlfriend ordered the Margarita twice as she enjoyed it, and her husband and mine enjoyed their drinks. So the whipped feta appetizer... so I loved this... probably my favorite... great combination of a hint of salt, sweet honey and some crunch with the pistachios. I could've eaten tons of their bread in hindsight they offered to refill it twice and we took them on one of the offer should've refilled it twice (Granted, not sure if they charged us for each refill... they should've given more bread to start with). The calamari wasn't any of our favorite (we suggest a change in recipe it was surprisingly bland but as a Kalamata olive lover I was ok grabbing a piece of olive to pair with the calamari so it provided enough salt... also swap the bland bread with the fresh naan like bread with the feta would've been a plus), and not good enough for us to finish... Mind you I think we were all starving because we waited for our meal so long. The time between apps and our entree was probably an hour and 15-20 minutes. I don't even normally say anything but we had 9:30 reservations at Hotel Greene and it was 8:58 for a 7:00 reservation and we still did not get our entrees yet. They kept asking us whether we wanted a third drink but I wanted to say if it's on the house sure... at any rate no apologies for the wait they just had 2-3 people come by to say our food was on the way. I finally got fed up and made a comment to our waitress, We may not have gotten our food if I didn't. Three of us got pasta dishes my husband got the Sausage Fettuccine (while amazing and delicious $20 took him two minutes to scarf down is a problem... probably the smallest fettuccine ever... but hold off, my gnocchi was even more tragic. Two of us ordered the gnocchi... I was literally about to say I didn't order salad to the waitress haha... glad I pulled myself back. There were maybe a max of 7 gnocchi if not less underneath the arugula. $3.80 for a 5 lb bag of potatoes and $1.96 for 5 oz .... No this dish is not worth $24. I actually enjoyed the consistency, more mashed potato style and grilled... not the traditional chewiness... though my husband wondered if they cooked it enough and we were in a rush so I wasn't going to question it. At that point I was just starving and ate it all so quick same with our friend. My girlfriend got the crab cakes and apparently filler was unreal and it did not taste good so she had most of it leftover. My husband and our friend was missing their side carrots and Brussel sprouts... we didn't even remember that until we left ($6 each) but again we were trying to get out and the manager making the comments were a complete annoyance. Just take a look at the pic of the gnocchi it's really jarring... $240+ later with tip... no we don't want dessert and personally we should've been offered something for our wait which we were not. I dislike giving bad reviews because I'm a big supporter of restaurants, but this review was really warranted.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FREE Brie appetizer! Amazing!

We went here for my friends Birthday. We had a reservation & the place was almost empty ***Thanks a lot Corona crap*** It was a Sunday night but I could just tell this place had to of been packed pre-covid. Everything was done in detail & all employees knew the menus without pause. They served a Happy Birthday Appetizer of Brie with cranberries & glaze. Ummm....yes!!!! It was not only amazing, but way to be different! We thought it was so cool they recognized her Birthday & in an untraditional way! Staff is trained well, food was AMAZING & we will definitely be back. PS...A table behind us ordered a pizza AFTER our perfect Creme Brule Dessert. The smell of the pizza made me jealous when I totally had a fully belly! They have something good going on here & I look forward to trying more dishes!

Absolutely loved this restaurant and sad to hear that they are changing it to only catering. The food was scrumptous, the drinks were very good, and the setting was beautifully clean. We got 3 dishes which are in between tapas size and regular dishes and were full. If you don't have it, for the time it remains open as a restaurant, get the Royalty Card for the 20% discount. Wish they would either expand to ensure the restaurants stays open but best of luck to the owner is his future ventures and keep making that delicious food!

The perfect amount of everything, color, food, libation, seating, sound and service. This place has it figured out. As a business owner I am impressed with offerings, impressions, win backs, up sales, pricing, flows, customer service, and apparently customer retention cause Im coming back tomorrow. Bravo team!!

I came here for a professional dinner. This was formally wine loft ,changed to a restaurant and is now in event space. Beautiful lighting and Decor large space could be perfect for a bridal shower rehearsal dinner , holiday party or possibly even a wedding. Food was beautifully plated and absolutely delicious. Right in the heart a short pump with parking decks and accessible parking areas around. Definitely a place to consider when planning a formal event . Yowant to sacrifice the quality of the food and the ambience. Beautiful location. Tootles

My organization recently held a Leadership Retreat at Bartizan. I can't say enough about how wonderful it was to work with the Bartizan staff. They worked to ensure the event space was set up to meet our needs. The food was delicious and the service was superb. I recommend their space for any of your upcoming meetings.

Mussels small plate
Bonnie B.

The food was good, especially the small plates. Mussels (see photo) were 10/10, as were the tacos. The calamari was a disappointment. Tasty but too few calamari amid lots of other ingredients that did little to complement the dish. Main dish for me was a mushroom & Brie pizza, which was excellent. But the scallop dish my daughter ordered was NYC-priced expensive: $30!! for only 3 large scallops. The dish included little piles of chorizo surrounding the 3 scallops which again didn't complement the dish but was more a distraction from the fact that there were only 3 scallops on the plate. Our Takeaway: order the small plates or pizza, but do not order the overpriced main dishes.

Dusk fell rapidly, illuminating the night sky with azure and cerulean blues, streaks of gold, and deep orange. Mr. RVA pulled into the West Broad Village of Short Pump, eager to embark upon his next dining escapade. Memories of The Round Table and conversations with Kings echoed from times past, as he strolled along the sidewalk to reach his destination. He was led to the mezzanine, overlooking patrons laughing and conversing in the dining room. This west coast inspired locale was styled by plush blue and grey seats, with marble and mahagony wood tabletops, lit by chandelier-like fixtures; a simple, yet chic appeal. Fond recollections of the Johnson's bridal party caused a smile to creep onto his face, as Mr. RVA sat in the same spot occupied a few years back. This establishment is part of the illustrious Dover Hall family. It resides on the corner of Whitehall Way and Backstreet. Certainly puts one in mind of the guerites or échauguettes, from the late medieval and early-modern castle fortifications of early 14th through 18th centuries. Spinach dip- dont try
Brittany L.

Stiff atmosphere, but the drinks looked pretty tasty. The spinach dip was a fail, entirely too cheesy. The pizza was not done enough and the tomato sauce was really sweet. The scallops were cooked well and the Brussels were good. Overall just not my favorite, wont be returning. Staff were excellent and the manager checked on us multiple times.

Fantastic spicy shrimp tacos
Jill M.

This was our second trip to Bartizan. It was as good or better than the first. We started with two appetizers: calamari and shrimp tacos. Calamari was Mediterranean style and had a delicious broth with Kalamata olives, feta and roasted tomatoes. The bread the bread for dipping to soak up the broth was perfect. The shrimp tacos were spicy and came in a homemade corn tortilla, which was crunchy and delicious. We chose Pepperoni pizza for our main course. Crust was crunchy, topped with a zesty tomato sauce and topped with curly pepperoni. Yum! Service was.... bar none, the best. Every aspect of Bartizan was perfection.

Beef carpaccio
Hans T.

At our 3rd visit we were impressed by the kitchen's great efforts to adapt our food to avoid food allergies and still produce delicious plates. The oysters and beef carpaccio were very good and the new item, flat iron steak with chimichurri, was wonderful. Tender & tasty. Great service and friendly staff/atmosphere.

What a great decision! When you walk in, you immediately notice that all of the wines are beautifully displayed -- it doubles as a wine shop, which gives it such a warm and welcoming vibe. It feels cozy but elevated at the same time. They don't offer flights for groups larger than five, but we were able to order one dealer's choice flight based on our preferred flavor profiles. From there, we could select a bottle inspired by the flight. A few of us gravitated toward reds. Our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable -- we told her the flavor profiles we liked, and she brought out three reds to try. The Wade & Wayfarer Pinot Noir was our favorite (so good!), though a bit pricier. We also tried the Alkoorai Cab/Merlot blend, which ended up being our least favorite. Ultimately, we chose the Denner Nightshade GSM -- excellent pick. Bonus tip: if you purchase a bottle $50 or more, there's no corkage fee; under $50, there is. Our waitress also mentioned that South American Merlots are the best Merlots as we all mentioned Merlot tends to be more dry. A few in our group ordered the Masterpiece Theatre cocktail on our waitress's recommendation -- she did not steer us wrong! Food-wise, everything was a hit. Our friends ordered the Cacio e Pepe burrata, pickled shrimp, Caesar salad, mushroom and leek flatbread, and the Brie and pear flatbread (both flatbreads were huge!). They loved every dish. My husband and I shared the bread with olive oil (simple and delicious), the charred octopus (tender with amazing flavor), gnocchi Bolognese, and lamb chops. Everything was fantastic -- the only small note was that the lamb could've been a bit more rare -- but still very flavorful. By the end of the night, all six of us agreed we'd absolutely be back. We're even looking into their wine club -- $60/month for two bottles (pickup required at the shop), which honestly sounds like a great deal. Apparently, they change up their wine flights weekly, which makes it even more fun and gives us a reason to return. Such a great experience all around -- can't wait to go back and try more wines!

They like what they are doing. It's in a strip mall parking lot so parking is pretty easy; if it's crowded, you might not be able to park right in front of the restaurant but there's still plenty of parking. We chose flights of wine to start out and really enjoyed each of the three we picked. For appetizers we got the pumpkin hummus and the Muhammara which is a roasted red pepper and walnut dip with toasted pita. My friends enjoyed their hummus, and my husband, and I thought the pepper and walnut dip were out of this world. We wanted more for dinner. The pita was the perfect crispiness and accompaniment for the dip. Having had limp pita at another restaurant recently makes me especially locked in on this detail lol For mains we got the duck confit tacos, the gnocchi bolognese and the hippie chick salad with roasted salmon. My friend enjoyed her salad, but I forgot to ask how she liked the roasted salmon on top. It looked tasty and was something I was considering for next time. I got the duck confit tacos which were definitely different from your standard fare and had a nice kick to it without being overwhelming. On my first bite I thought it was gonna be too spicy, but the heat did not build to unbearable. Still not sure I'm a fan of duck, but it was done very well and I wasn't disappointed. My husband's gnocchi Bolognese was done perfectly. I was shocked how light and pillowy the gnocchi were and loved the Bolognese, which was the perfect amount of savory without being too rich; elevated comfort food for sure . We were too full from dinner to order dessert which kept our bill down to a little over one Benji for drinks, one appetizer and two beans, , which is pretty typical for a nice meal out these days. I do miss the days when you could go out for $30-$45 a person even with a shared appetizer and drinks but WW is more on the reasonable side compared to most. We will definitely be back though and Iwoll be investigating the private room option for a milestone birthday or anniversary. Well done WW!

I liked the margherita and the spinach ricotta. We also ordered a charcuterie plate after our server suggested it instead of the olives. Sadly it only had four olives on the plate, so we rationed. I wasn't a super huge fan of the plate, as it was heavy on crackers. I would've liked to see more variety for the price, including perhaps some fresh bread and more pickles. We ordered sangria and the table red wine and both were delicious. The sangria rioja is a touch on the sweeter side, which I personally don't mind, but just be aware if that is not your thing! It did taste better once it was a little bit diluted. The rice dish (arroz meloso) was one of their brunch specials and it was FANTASTIC! It has shrimp, chorizo, and chicken, and the rice was cooked and flavored to perfection. It was like a mini paella and the portion was huge. Definitely big enough to share for two people! I even told the waitress they need to add this to their menu permanently and not just as a special. We also ordered the patatas bravas (the crispy potatoes with spicy sauce), and it quite literally transported me back to my time when I lived in Spain. It came with a side of garlic aioli which was divine...creamy, garlicky (but not TOO garlicky), and seasoned well. the red sauce on the potatoes was delicious and spicy, so beware if you are not fan of spicy food. We had a little mishap with another tapa (the pan iberico, which they have listed as a flatbread) which I unfortunately did not take a picture of and did not care for at all. They gave us the vegetarian version by mistake, but our waitress was awesome and she recognized the mistake right as it came to our table. We got the right one and it wasn't bad, but definitely wouldn't order again. That would be the only thing I would avoid from the menu, as it's not traditionally Spanish. It was like a mini pizza with chorizo and had manchego melted on top. I'm sure a lot of people would like it, but it just didn't make much sense to me! Atmosphere is warm and inviting, and I can't wait to go back for a wine tasting and more tapas. Try them out :)

The chef was pretty resistant to any requests for substitutions, so do with that what you will. They certainly knew what they were doing in the kitchen. The duck, with the chard mixture, was amazing work. The burger is probably the largest dish on the menu, it's pretty substantial and was very tasty. I'll also shout out the pickles on the meat and cheese board, they had a significant spicy kick but were delicious and I wanted more in the end. The service was great, our man was very involved and had a lot of knowledge about the menu. It honestly was pretty quiet for a Friday night; the Tobacco Company is right down the block but you would never know it in here. The decor in here is also very interesting, there are tables with couch seating on one side. Everything's very sleek. Delightfully clean bathrooms. We enjoyed it, though I'm not sure when we'll be back for a meal as the menu is ultimately pretty small.

It's so rare to see any establishment receive so many glowing reviews on Yelp, you start to wonder…read moreif they're all sponsored. But Chez Nous consistently delivers a 5-star experience and is truly deserving of top ratings ... nothing overblown here. I almost hesitate to give it yet another "5" because I'm afraid there will eventually be a line out the door of my favorite place on any given night! Everything I've tried at Chez Nous, from octopus carpaccio to the apéro board to the olive cake (Sarah's specialty) has been spectacular, not to mention the bubbly Blanquette and full-bodied reds that are great on their own or with a small plate. The team's attention to precision and flavor are always impressive and honor French traditions with both casual and upscale cuisine. But listen, there's one thing about Chez Nous that DOESN'T feel French. In France, you can predict that service will be unpredictable. You might be sitting a while before you're noticed, and you'll probably wait far longer for your check after a meal. Some of that is due to the "culture de savourer"--an expectation of minimal, hands-off service. At Chez Nous, you get the best of everything: a warm welcome that will make a regular out of you, impeccable service and hospitality, and an atmosphere that nurtures meaningful conversation, toasts, and laughter. The pièce de résistance is the opportunity to meet some great French-speaking friends here who appreciate it all ("des gens au bec fin", in French). Chez Nous is the neighborhood café I didn't even realize Richmond needed. Check the schedule on their website before you go--the place is so popular, it's sometimes reserved for special events. Drop in whenever you can--even just having a glass and a chat with Melissa, Eric, Sarah, and Dean is a magical experience.
