    Coffee Ice Cubes

In hood with as many diverse offerings as Sunnyside, few get better than Baruir's, which serves some of the best coffee in the neighborhood. It took me years to become a coffee lover, and I credit them with helping me truly appreciate all things coffee. I've only grown fonder since my initial review (which still rings true) nearly a decade ago, so I'm upping the rating to 5 stars. The sweet owner, Mr. Nersesian, has held the fort for decades and is among one of many Romanian owners in the area. It is a family operated business and whether it's him or his wife, or his hilarious son, they serve all their customers with care. I once mentioned how much I appreciated the coffee ice cubes and his response was: "I'm not selling you water, I'm here to sell you coffee." It is the truth. They still freshly roast their beans every day and the smell is truly intoxicating. They also sell the beans to grind at home as well as regional variations from Latin America to Europe. What goes unmentioned is that they also sell a small variety of snacks and treats, much of it of the eastern euro / middle eastern variety. They've been a part of the borough for over 50 years at this point. Here's hoping for 50 more and beyond.

This is my first time in Sunnyside and as I was going to dinner with a group at a local pizza place, I saw a specialty store serving European/Middle Eastern goods and it happened to be this gem. After smelling some very good coffee, I got some of their pistachio Turkish Delight/Lokum which was very cheap for the size of the piece. The staff was nice. The lokum was a bit different than most other places which flavor theirs with rosewater. Instead of said floral flavor, I tasted a stronger mastic flavor so in short, it wasn't as sweet. There was a refreshing aftertaste thanks to said ingredient. The texture was also nice; tasting fresh even though I bought it quite late in the day. I overall liked it a lot. Minireview as I didn't get much but of what I tried, I liked it a lot. I'll be back for an iced coffee when I'm back in the area. Nice local place.

"Our coffee is SO good that we can use generic soda cups for our Iced Coffees, close on Sundays, and not open until 9:00am daily, and STILL not have any pretentiousness about us." That is what I think about Baruir's! A true Queens/ New York City experience. It's more like a small Euro grocery store with good coffee. A majority of the store has shelves of produce, their own packaged bulgur wheat, dried apricots, currants, nuts, and turkish delights. Their small batched of coffee are only behind the counter. There's a teeny selection of baklavah and other pastries. Their roasting machine is pretty cool to look at, surprisingly the didn't smell of coffee when I went on a warm Saturday afternoon. The girl behind the counter knew her beans well and said that the Java blend was the strongest. I'm also told that Swiss Water Decaf blend that they have, is the preferred way to make Decaf, instead of that other way..that I've vaguely heard of, that doesn't leave the decaf coffee tasting very good. A half pound of whole bean Java and a small Iced Coffee (they have Soymilk! No Almond though. & yes it was with those infamous coffee ice cubes) cost me around $7. It was strange that the didn't offer any other drinks at the time (they have espresso, cappucino etc. listed on their teeny menu stuck on the counter. 4:00pm- I was told that they only had regular coffee- it was very good though). There's a nice grey cat there! There's also a tiny table in the back, behind the produce, under a TV, with 2 chairs.

Located on Queens Blvd its so easy to pass this place and not realize it. However thanks to yelp, I was able to actually stop here. It's a very nice spot full with coffee favorites. The have a good selection of coffee to buy. You can get the beans or grind. They also have middle eastern pastries. But what attracted me here is the iced coffee. They make the ice cubes out of the cold coffee they serve. I think is genius!!!! Means while you're drinking your coffee you will never have that watery flavor. On the contrary your coffee will keep on going!!!! Yes!!! Extra caffeine please! So I love, love, love this idea and their iced coffee is a must. Staff is nice and again, support our local businesses!!!

I wouldn't have noticed this place if it wasn't for Yelp! I got the iced coffee, sunflower seeds and some green olives. The owner is extremely friendly. Definitely check it out!

Grab a pound of coffee a week at the very least. The ice coffee is great. If you enjoy Turkish coffee this place is for you.

I asked what their best selling roasted whole beans were, and they said it was their house blend, at $9 a pound.

They have a table to pickup preorders so you don't have to wait in the main line. I ordered a dozen for $39. You can select your assortment. Here's my review in order from the best to the least desirable, according to our group. Vanilla custard- the filling was thick and speckled with vanilla beans. It wasn't too sweet. This was the best according to our group. Strawberry filled- this is most traditional and Breads Bakery does a nice job. The jam is homemade. Pistachio- this doughnut was filled with smooth pistachio cream and was topped with a few pieces of pistachio. Not traditional, but they did a good job. Chocolate- the filling tasted like a semisweet or bittersweet cream/custard. Like the others, it was smooth. The vanilla was more popular among our group and I personally didn't love this doughnut. Mango- this was the one that those in my group felt missed the mark. It wasn't cloyingly sweet, so that was good, but the filling didn't do anything for us either. If you're looking for a mango dessert the one at Lysée is a real winner.

When I moved to the UES, I was worried finding a new local roaster. I've had bad experiences where the beans are too oily or something is off that messes with my usually grind size/extraction time. No issues with Oslo's beans. 2. They actually know how to make a proper americano. Every coffee shop takes a standard cup, puts in the espresso shot, and then fills hot water to the brim of the cup. This destroys the flavor of the espresso. You end up with hot water that tastes slightly like coffee. Oslo chooses quality over quantity. They don't fill the water up to the brim, so you have a cup with 2/3 of liquid; however, this is a proper americano. You can taste the difference. At other shops, I just get drip coffee because they don't know what they're doing. Oslo knows what they're doing. That's why I come here.

One item someone in our group wanted -- the octopus burger -- was unfortunately unavailable, which was disappointing, especially given that it was brunch and still relatively early in the day. That said, the dishes we did order were good and well prepared. The space itself is nice: the front functions as a cute coffee shop, while the back has tables for sit-down dining.
