First time I went, I was by myself and got the Pad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodles). The lady owner/waitress warned me it was a little spicy, but I told her that was fine. I should have heed her warning, because as I kept eating, the spice just built up and after a few bites, I couldn't handle it anymore (fyi, it was probably a typical 3/5 level spicy, so I'm just weak sauce). I think she saw me fanning myself and take really long breaks between bites, because she came over and offered to make me another order. At first I graciously declined because I didn't want to waste food, but I gave in a few minutes later since I was so hungry and I only had about 6 bites in 20 minutes! She didn't even charge me for the second order. I really appreciated the good service, since it's rare in any asian restaurant. Today I called ahead and brought in a crew of about 17 people for lunch and they accommodated to our large group very well. Everyone loved their food, especially the red curries, the eggplant, and pad thai. I got my Drunken Noodles again (0 spicy), which is good enough to make me not order my default Pad Thai. Hooray! I found Thai food near Galveston and double hooray because it was good! I got the green papaya salad, add shrimp, and mango and sticky rice. The papaya salad was nice and spicy and comparable to what I had in Thailand. If you aren't a spicy fan, I would get something else. If you do like spicy food, it will leave a nice burn in your mouth without incinerating your face. The mango and sticky rice was okay. I'm the biggest fan of mango and sticky rice so I've had better, but the mango was sweet and the rice sticky - what more could you ask for in Texas City? read more

If we're REALLY craving some Thai food and too tired to make our own, we'll make the 20-min trip to Basil House. Quiet and small, but you're almost always guaranteed a table. Most of the curries are decent, but the green one was quite questionable; it looked like a lot of green food coloring. When my husband and I lived in Galveston this was the closest place at which we could get good Thai food. When we visited, there were usually only a couple of other tables occupied, but we still had to wait awhile on our food. That didn't bother me too much as I felt like that meant that our food would be in the made-from-scratch category, and it didn't disappoint. You just might not want to go there if you are so hungry that you require food immediately. We've tried the Pad Thai, Lard Na (not sure how they spell it here, but you get the idea), and some of the curries. All were good. Just be warned that whatever dish it is that is described as having a lot of sauce ... well, it really has a lot of sauce, so don't order it if you are wearing a shirt that you don't want to get stuff on! read more

We are so happy to have found a local Thai spot. You can tell it's family run, which makes for a "homey" experience. Good food at reasonable prices. Red curry (chicken) was good, lots of veggies...almost too many bell peppers. I might try the creamy red curry next time, to get a better meat/veggie ratio. Coconut soup was awesome...ordered it with tofu, and I heard a to-go customer order it with fried tofu (will have to try). Boyfriend liked his pork dish enough to not have left-overs. Here's where the trouble started: My fiancee ordered the Thai drunken noodles, and SPECIAL REQUESTED NO FISH OILS OR FISH PRODUCTS BE INCLUDED IN THE DISH (easy to do). She has a very bad allergy to fish products and ingesting any amount of it could make her very ill!! Our waitress obliged and put the order in. Out comes our food. She asks me to taste test her dish just to be sure, to be safe, so we don't end up going to the hospital. I immediately taste + smell fish in her food. We informed the waitress who ARGUED WITH US FOR 10 MINUTES about it. She claimed we said "No fish sauce! " so they didn't use any, but used OYSTER SAUCE. OYSTER SAUCE IS MADE OF ANCHOVIES ... WHICH ARE FISH !!! The waitress refused to remake the dish or take the item off our bill. To top it off, it was a $13.00 plate of food which we could not consume. Very fresh food Had the coconut chicken/mushroom soup which was very nice. ( I even ordered one togo for later! ) Next was my entree which I must have not paid attention when ordering. Forgot the name, but it was a wide ribbon noodle dish with spicy tomato sauce. Plate was HUGE! Not complaining about it at all. It's probably good enough for two people or one someone extremely hungry. It needed a little bit of salt or soy sauce, but still very fresh and flavorful. When the heat of the spice started to kick in, the Thai milk tea was a perfect way to calm it down. (Also a great dessert drink!) Went to basil house for me and my wife's anniversary. First time. We love thai and have gone by this place many times without stopping. First impression: very unbusy, even for a wednesday night. Very humble place, so you know the food is going to be good. Wife ordered drunken noodles and I ordered a curry. We got spring rolls for an ap. Wellll...... The spring rolls were about as uninspired as it gets. Likely frozen and shipped in and deepfried with a dipping sauce every bit as uninspired and overprice. My curry comes out, but the wife's drunken noodles are a no-show. It took a while for my wife's food to come out, and things were awkward for quite a while while we waited. When her food finally comes out, both dishes are quite good, and a good value for money. Will definitely go back, making sure to skip getting any appetizers. 4 stars. Would be 5 if the focused on the appetizers as much as they focus on their entrees. read more

Ok so I've only tried the chicken pad Thai, which I picked up to-go. The Good: -largest portion of chicken (albeit mostly noodles) pad Thai I have ever received -made to my level of spiciness (3) request (I know, not authentic) (however I disliked that they used chili oil rather than actual Thai chili peppers--lazy, though this is how most places do it, and I should have specified for actual thai chili peppers be used) -appropriate amount of crushed peanuts, on the side, which I like (rather than mixed in) -the guy who gave me my order was nice, and the inside of the restaurant seemed nice enough -it's the absolute closest place to Galveston with Thai food (please let me know if there's another place closer to Galveston that starts having Thai!) The Bad: -they used regular onions, as opposed to the long green onion--definitely unacceptably alters the flavor -could not find any sprouts or cilantro -the sauce/flavor was just off overall, lacking any complexity; too sweet as others seem to have noticed, as posted on some other reviews -$12 with tax (plus tip)--not worth it at all for mostly noodles Maybe they have other dishes that are good. Maybe the inhabitants of Texas City prefer pad Thai this way, or they just don't know any better (I would be completely unsurprised.) Don't get the pad Thai if you know what it's suppose to taste like. read more

For years, or as long as B.H. has been open, I've enjoyed eating here. While I no longer reside in Texas City it's always great to stop by when I'm visiting my family. The menu is simple and covers the basis of what you'd expect for a like restaurant, my food has always been wonderful and consistent and it's a different option than what most of Texas City has to offer. My rating is almost solely based on their food; overall I believe some cosmetic love could be shown to the place, the staff could smile more and the atmosphere could be trendy enough and energetic enough to make B.H. and go-to dinner option. read more

Okay so I got the coconut soup and I have to say it's a bit underwhelming if you ask me. I honestly don't know what the hype is about. The mushrooms were pretty much raw and the herbal flavors of lemongrass, galangal, and coriander was pretty much nonexistent. I try not to be pretty harsh, but maybe it was the fish sauce/chili oil that overpowered the soup. And normally I eat a bunch of food about 2 entrees worth for my self, but the soup seemed curb my appetite and that was all I could eat. Now, the service was great, my water stayed topped off, food came out fast, and it was very hot so for that I give it 3 stars for that. We eat here quite a bit. The staff is always wonderful. Friendly, courteous, fast. The food is always fresh, and tastes home cooked. I eat here at least 2 times a week and have never been disappointed. My favorites are any of the soups, the fried Tofu, and any of the BUN dishes. Service is always prompt and friendly. I'm always treated like a friend every time I walk in the door. They remember what dishes I've tried, which ones I've really liked. Visiting Texas City area and stopped in for a late lunch. Our food fell short in many ways. Chicken Sate with no peanut sauce and it didn't taste like Thai Sate I know - it was served with a small cucumber salad. I had the lemongrass chicken lunch plate with egg roll it was OK. Drove by this city and was craving pho. Was skeptical due to no one else eating inside the resturant but I was proven wrong. Pho was delish. I am a HUGE fan of the Basil House, my husband would make us eat there 3 times a week if I let him. The drunken noodles are fabulous! The Pad Thai is delicious! I am currently hooked on a garlic chicken dish. I didn't even know I liked Thai food,I am from Galveston but currently live in Texas City, everyone I know in Galveston that likes Thai food, makes the drive to the Basil House! The atmosphere is nothing to write home about....the walls are a weird green color and there are strange statues when you walk in the door. (it has recently come to my attention that this is a cultural thing, ...even the color of the walls). There are mirrors on the majority of the walls. The place is not cute....but the food is delicious! It is a husband and wife team, the husband cooks and the wife serves, seats, etc... We had pad Thai (excellent) the pho was good, ( one size and is large) drunken noodles and pad see we were excellent. The only complaint I have is that the owner takes the servers tips! I saw and heard him telling her to give him a tip she was left or he would fire her. Unbelievable! She had 7 tables and was by herself and doing an awesome job. Living on the island, I have noticed that there are not many ethnic food options as far as Indian, Thai, and Chinese food go. I was excited to find an authentic Thai restaurant that was about a 15 minute drive away in Texas City. That's totally do-able for good food. We came in around 12:30 and there were a few tables in the restaurant already. We sat down and waited awhile to get waters or menus because there was one server there running her butt off. As I say in a lot of my reviews, I have been this one person that is working alone and running my butt off so I have learned the skill of patience in these situations. Once they brought out the menus, I was able to make a quick decision as I have been craving curry for a couple weeks now. First they brought out some soup that I enjoyed. It had tofu, mushrooms, and tasted a little sweet like coconuts. It was raining that day so warm soup hit the spot. Next, the food came out fairly quick and the portions were big for the price. I ordered the creamy red curry with chicken. Sometimes I am weary about ordering chicken in restaurants because I am not a fan if it's too chewy or too under-cooked but I took a chance and it was great! The curry was full of flavor and had a perfect amount of spice. Nate got the drunken noodles and they were also delicious. Everything was wonderful but I would recommend them getting a little bit more help for the lunch rush to make for quicker service. Student in Galveston - this is the closest Thai to the Island that I'm aware of. Eaten here a couple times and my roommate and I order take-out every once in a while. Eating in takes a little longer than you expect, which I suspect is because of the low volume, which is fine, because the food is great! The lady who I think runs the place is very nice, too. Have yet to be disappointed- albeit I have only tried the Pad Thai and Pad See Ew, because that's just what I get cravings for while studying on this Thai-free island...
