I recently discovered this place through coworkers and I think it is not a bad place. It still doesn't replace my favorite Thai restaurant but I definitely have come back a few times for the last two months. I can tell English is not the staff's first language so don't expect them to be super talkative and interactive. My server is still super nice though and I did not have any complaints. I have had the fried rice, drunken noodle,and red curry. It didn't take long for the food to come out which my hangry belly appreciates very much. The reason I did not give Basil House a full five stars is because I just wish the place was cleaner. It did feel a little bit dirty and not well kept. It had been nearly 13 years since I had last come to this thai restaurant. Not much had changed I'd say. I came for lunch and was able to take advantage of their lunch specials. For $8, I picked the thai basil with beef. The waitress didn't ask how spicy I wanted the dish as do most restaurants in Houston. By the time I was able to ask her, the dish was being plated. Thai basil - my regular dish to order when visiting a new thai restaurant. Beef was tender, dish had plenty of onion and bell pepper, even a red onion or two and plenty of basil leaves. No jalapeños though. Rice was cooked well. Also comes with a small garden salad topped with peanut sauce. Although the waitress said it was spicy, I'd give it maybe 1/5. Their prices aren't outrageous, but maybe a tad high for the area. This is the only thai restaurant in the area, so they can basically set their prices. Pro tip: If you don't like thai, they also have some vietnamese dishes. read more

I don't usually care too much to order Vietnamese Pho in a fused Thailand style restaurants but this is an exception. In the main strip of Texas City, you will find this somewhat dated building with a choppy parking lot but don't let that deter you EVEN when you step inside go for the heart of things. An interior decorator was not in the budget for this place but I tell you what they must have thrown everything they had into making the Pho as best as I could. Of course there are other food items you can order here and it would be a mixed and maybe fused items when I can also tell you the fried rice here is even another reason to try this place. The dumplings that my coworker had was pretty much freshly made simply because it took a while to come out and it did not really stick too hard to the container that it came to the table in. You could pretty much tell the freshness factor because there was not a dry side on the dumpling and the juices have it away. Yes a whole paragraph almost just for the dumplings, another you must try thing. Service is actually pretty good here! The prices of the food items are very fair. If you have a friend or know somebody that has never had Vietnamese pho before, this would be the place I would recommend this side of the world of Houston because I found myself coming back to this place three days in a row just for the fun. Used to be our favorite but no more. Peanut sauce was thin and tasted "off". Creamy red curry so incredibly salty we sent it back. Everything that I have had here has been amazing. Don't let the appearance fool you. The service, the food is great. Pad Thai happens to be my favorite but the Pho is great, the yellow curry is a must have, Mongolian Beef has so much flavor, coconut soup... I could go on. Do yourself a favor and order up some grub. This is my first time eating here, I live in Galveston and I will happily drive past every Thai place on the island and come here once a week instead. The meals I ordered -pad Thai, yellow curry, and spicy chicken salad- would have easily cost twice as much for half the meat at any other Thai restaurant. THERE IS ACTUALLY LOTS OF CHICKEN IN MY CURRY. It's not just soup with a few elusive bites of meat and potatoes like I've been getting everywhere else lately. Yeah, this is the place. We took a chance and went here for lunch. The parking lot was busy so we took it as a good sign. The dining room was clean, yes the decor was outdated, however there was no cause for concern about cleanliness. The TOM yum soup was very flavorful. We ordered the chicken satay which was grilled with a tasty light curry flavor. We both ordered Mongolian beef. This is not what I would normally order however the waitress was walking by with a plate of it and it looked great. We got the coconut soup, string beans with chicken, and eggplant with green curry. For dessert we got the Mango Sticky Rice, and I also had a Thai Iced Coffee. Mostly meh. This place seemed to put a Vietnamese spin on all the dishes, some of them came out better than others. Everything we ordered was about 20% out of sync with normal Thai food. If you want something different, you're getting it here, but if you're looking for normal Thai food look elsewhere (check my other reviews for better places in this area.) The coconut soup was pretty good, but, like others said, not a lot of complex spices here. It was mainly coconut milk, mushrooms, chicken, and a healthy dose of fire oil. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. The chicken with green beans was quite nice, but not normal Chicken Prik Khing like you might be expecting. Easily a 4 out of 5. The chicken and eggplant with green curry was kinda meh, one out of the three of us liked it, the rest of us found it tolerable. About a 2 1/2 out of 5. The less said about the Mango Sticky Rice and the Thai Iced Coffee the better. Price was too high for the area, and for the quality and size of the entrees, even though they were larger than average. Great little restaurant, tucked away on Palmer Highway. The atmosphere is minimal, but its clean and the food is excellent -- and could hold its own against any Thai restaurant in Houston. I was in the mood for Chinese so I checked out what yelpers had to say about restaurants in TC. So seeing how many great reviews Basil House had, I knew that Thai would equally suffice. I ordered coconut soup with chicken and Spicy Thai fried rice with beef. So delish! Rice so flavorful and good heat to it, not a lot of meat for those who prefer, but was fine for me. I thought it was kinda pricey at $20 on one hand, but it's so much food, I was stuffed after a few bites and will have more than plenty left, too bad I'm not huge on leftovers. Just ordered the Pho Dac Biet from DoorDash, which has beef and meatballs. Soooooooo good! My husband had the grilled pork and rice and loved it! Both dishes only cost a total of $15! My pho was enough to save as two meals. I love Basil House. But you have to know what to eat when coming here. I love Pad Thai, and this is not the place for that. Do not get the Pad Thai, it is not that good, I am also not a fan of the pan fried dumpling. Their Mongolian dishes are fantastic, the appetizer fried rolls and steamed shrimp with rice noodle rolls are so good. Their peanut dipping sauce is to die for. Their grilled pork vermicelli, or any of the vermicelli dishes are tasty. Get the lemon chicken. Also, I have not had a single bad soup experience at this place. My husband and I were dying for Pho one evening and I decided this was the closest place to pick up from on the way home. Our pho was great, and food wise we were more than satisfied! It's always 2 meals for me. However, the Pho place I moved away from really set the standard for how I receive Togo items.
