I have received delivery from here once before while in St. Pete. The first order was perfect. Today is new year's day, so I expected the delivery to my hotel across the street to be a little delayed. I placed my order online, waited the 5 minutes to hear back, and called to pay and confirm my order. The waitress received the fax with my oder while I was on the phone. I paid and hung up. One hour later, I called and was told the order was on its way. I am patient so I waited more. Another 30 minutes later and the food finally arrived. I was famished and a little irritated. Upon inspection, I found that somehow even though I ordered online, my order was all wrong. I was charged for 2 expensive sushi rolls instead of one (it added another $15 to the bill!), and the spiciness of one of my dishes was wayyyy too hot. The spice was so intense I couldn't taste the food. It was a strange powder versus the chili's I am used to having, so the abundance of the powder ruined the flavor of the dish. I am guessing they take the fax and enter it into the computer manually. Bad experience for the second time ordering here. read more

Just moved here recently and have been looking for a decent Thai restaurant. Well I have found one! Decided to try Basil Leaf today. Went in and got take out. Very fast on a Sunday! Maybe 5 mins! Visiting from Houston, TX. Gotta be honest, not very good. The edamame had so much salt on each piece; we had to wash off each price in our water glass to make it edible. Got three rolls: Big Bopper, Toasted Bagel and Weezer. BB was disgusting. We only ate about 3 pieces each. The sauce had the appearance of melted cheddar cheese and was overall just a bland roll. TB was probably the best. Nice and warm and sweet. Overall, not very good. The rating of "Meh. I've experienced better" pretty much says it all. read more

Didn't have much of anything else but the sushi was awesome and we didn't dine in so I cannot base my rating on that but for what we ordered to be picked up, it was good. We didn't want to leave our awesome room at the Postcard across the street so for our two night stay, that is where we got dinner. When we picked our food up, we found the dining area clean and quant. The staff was very friendly and overly helpful. We had the Elvis roll, spicy tuna roll, the ginger salad and a shrimp tempura roll. The rolls were big, fresh and so tasty. Would defiantly recommend! THE BEST FOOD!! Went here just craving phad Thai and ordered crab cheese wontons, Thai bubble tea, a toasted bagel roll, Tom yum soup, and shrimp phad tai. Everything we ate here was 10/10!!! To say our experience was very disappointing is an understatement because we've been long-time customers at both of Joy's restaurants. We were frequent visitors, pre-COVID-19, and are just now getting back into the in-restaurant dining experience again. I ordered my two favorite sushi rolls, a Rainbow Roll and a Spider Roll, and my wife ordered her favorite, Drunken Noodles. The Spider roll, which is supposed to served warm since the soft shell crab is cooked first and incorporated into the roll right from the oven, and obviously had be left out because it was served cold. My wife's order was its usual wonderful meal. But worse than cold food, Basil Leaf, following the 50% occupancy protocol of the county closed one half of their restaurant, only served in the other half, had no barriers up between booths, and packed in patrons without any consideration of social distancing. After observing this we told our waitress to please not seat anyone in the booth next to ours (we were at the back wall), then another server had the audacity to get upset with me for telling them we didn't want anyone within 6 feet of us because they didn't have plexiglass between the booths, his reason was he had people waiting for a booth. For these reasons we won't be going back to either of Joy's restaurants again until the county allows 100% occupancy. read more

Was in the mood for Thai food and decided to give Basil Leaf a try for take out to support local business while visiting St. Pete's. We ordered a chicken Pad Thai, tofu Pad See Ew and seaweed salad. I gave the restaurant two starts for the seaweed salad. It was delicious. As for the rest of the meal, my partner didn't even realize I had ordered Thai food. The only difference between his Pad Thai and my Pad See Ew was the noodles. The vegetables were way overcooked and mushy, and I swear, they used exactly the same sauces for both dishes - which was soy sauce. I felt so heavy and bloated after. I asked for a side of hot sauce with my takeout and was given a bunch of packets of soy sauce. Paid $40 for a meal for two, it tasted like a $5 meal. I love thai food and am soo disappointed. We are sushi nuts and also love Thai food, so this sounded like a perfect choice. A little underwhelmed by the sushi (Blondie roll and red hot chili pepper roll). Rolls were small and fairly expensive. However the rating was made up for with the entrees. My boyfriend had the pad Thai and loved it, while I got the massaman curry. Was so delicious and creamy, with just the right amount of spice (waitress didn't ask what spice level we wanted, luckily we thought to ask since she said everything is mild - I got medium). I went to dinner tonight at basil leaf. Service was slow and we were pretty neglected. I handed my debit card to the waitress without asking for the check because I knew how much the bill would come out to.I ordered 2 rolls that were $14.95 and had two waters. When the waitress handed me the bill, there was no itemized copy, and the bill said $38.38 and I knew that was very far off. I asked another waitress to check this because my waitress was no where to be found. She handed me my itemized receipt and the waitress had already added gratuity to my bill without me knowing and left the tip and total for me to sign. I was in shock that basically she was trying to get an added tip on top of adding gratuity that she said was an "accident" I don't know how long servers have been doing this but it's wrong and they're stealing from their customers. Went here a couple of nights ago because we were excited to see a Thai restaurant near our condo. We walked in and the host pointed to a corner table and said "there's a booth in the back" so we went and sat there. About 7-8 minutes after we sat we were brought waters but the guy took off before we could say anything or order drinks. We sat there for another 20 minutes while 3-4 servers glanced our way but never stopped to greet us or take our drink order. They did not seem incredibly busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff (including two guys still standing at the entrance talking to each other). We grew more concerned that service was poor when the table diagonal from us was asking for drink refills by the time the waitress was taking their appetizer order. We gave it a few more minutes (only because my son was really excited for Thai food) then decided to get up and leave. Nobody stopped us but as we opened the door the guys at the front were acting like they were shocked we were leaving. Pretty terrible service, and I feel like we had a better dinner elsewhere that night. As a Thai person, I'm super disappointed that we were treated this way. That would never happen in Thailand. Let me start off by saying, their sushi and calmari fries are to die for! All the food was delicious, well- made, and prepared quickly. I purchased the dynamite roll and red dragon cone, which was made with a variety of shrimp, krab, fresh vegetables, and spicy dressings. Very generous portion servings as well, but not so large that you leave the restaurant feeling gorged. Based on their food alone, I would have awarded them five stars. However, their service left something to be desired. We waited for a while just to get our drink orders (sake and water), and then again for our food orders to be taken, and to get the bill. We were served by a total of three people, so I'm not sure if we were a "floater table" or if our server was too occupied to take complete care of us. That being said, our food and drinks arrived in a timely manner, so we didn't have to worry about food being at an uncomfortable temperature. Have loved Basil Leaf and used to come here often as I go to college right down the road. Usually I stuck to their thai menu and was nothing but happy. Unfortunately tonight I ordered some carryout sushi to try and switch it up. I should have known when they forgot a roll in the order but had one ready less than a minute later that the sushi was not fresh but I wasted my money on it anyways. Long story short every single roll I got tasted acrid and left a foul lingering taste in my mouth. This includes even the vegetarian rolls. Not sure if it was the rice, or the nori, or what but something was OFF and it was extremely obvious. Crossing my fingers and hoping I don't get sick. Moral of the story, this place is great and awesome, and don't go anywhere NEAR the sushi (or at least the ones under 15 bucks a pop like I did) read more

My husband became sick too. They overcharged us and added many extra surcharges to everything. It was too expensive for bad food!! I want my money back. This place is disgusting. We originally picked this restaurant because of the close proximity from our hotel and boy, and we feel like we lucked out. I am very picky about my sushi as well as freshness of the fish I eat, and the quality of the food exceeded my expectations in every way. The restaurant it self is very clean and well lit. Our server, Mary, was extremely friendly and very helpful making recommendations. The food portions were extremely generous as we ended up having to take some home. Our server did warn us the portions were big, but there was so much we wanted to try, and having leftovers in your hotel room is never bad, especially when everything in the town closes early. I feel like we had great value on our dining dollars, as the food was fresh, portioned well and served by a friendly waitstaff. I would definitely go back and recommend you do too! We have had dinner at this restaurant several times and enjoyed the food. Tonight we arrive at 8pm and from the second we entered were made to feel like an inconvenience. The restaurant wanted to close and started to place chairs on tables, turn tables over at booths and provide terrible service. They could have easily said- I'm sorry we are closed, but they didn't. 8pm is not late. We will NEVER ever eat at this restaurant again. Ever since we first drove into St. Pete Beach I wanted to check out Basil Leaf. I adore Thai food and I am very pleasantly surprised to find a Thai restaurant that delivers! We actually ordered to-go so we could have lunch with a view of the Gulf, though. I adore that you can order online and include special instructions, if necessary. We had the Red Curry with Tofu and the Massaman Curry with Chicken. Each dish came with its own box of steamed white rice. The ingredients were very fresh and had nice flavor. The red curry did not come with pineapple as I am use to seeing, but I realize there are different versions. I also did not see any drinks available to order from the website. I would have loved to had two Thai teas with my order! I must point out that they stay open after lunch while a lot of Thai restaurants close after lunch in order to prep for dinner. read more

OK, this post is not mainly about food (though I will talk about it). It's about the implicit racial prejudice I experienced as a customer in this restaurant. It just happened about 1 hour ago. I'm an Asian. I was walking toward the restaurant and behind me there's a white couple. After I entered, an old Asian man came out from behind the counter and asked "are you three"? I said I'm one. Then he pointed at a table and said, in a careless, perfunctory way, "OK that table" and he did not lead me to the table. Then, as I was sitting, I saw he personally led the white couple to a table behind me and asked them, smilingly, "is it OK to sit here"? That was the beginning. Then, a young Asian waitress came over to take order. She had an emotionless, disinterested face while talking to me and taking my order. Then as she moved to the while couple's table, she almost changed to another person- she sounded very kind and happy. I ordered the food first -- it's the beef noodle soup. Then she took order from the white couple. But she brought the food for them first!? Could it be because my food took longer to cook? I doubt it; because right after she brought their food, she brought my food. And then finally, at one point she came over to the couple and asked, sweetly, how they were doing with the food. AND THEN JUST BYPASSED MY TABLE AS IF I WASN'T THERE. This is THE CLEAREST behavioral indicator of implicit racial prejudice -- trust me, I study social psychology. Anyway, a HIGHLY disappointed and angry experience with the restaurant. Also, the food was no good at all -- beef noodle soup is very limited in amount, and cooked perfunctorily (bland and tasteless, a bowl of a few noodles with 3 slices of beef floating around). read more

i love Thai food and we were super excited to have a nice dinner on our first night of vacation. We ordered chicken Satay and when it came to the table it was hard aMd obviously overcooked or flash fried and we asked for another. The server took it away and brought the same exact order back 1 minute later and said try this. i then watched him laughing with his server friend and looking our way as my kids choked it down from being so hungry. next was the meal of Thai basil beef and Pad see ew. The white rice was burned and crunchy! what Asian place has crappy rice? The food had zero flavor and the noodles were over cooked and properly flat. we didn't eat more than a few bites before leaving. we were warned by a couple leaving to save our money before we were seated. $87 later for 2 adults and kids I wish I had listened to them. Pretty decent Thai food on the island. I always go for the Peanut sauce chicken. A lot of places make theirs overly sweet but it's pretty good here. Their pad Thai is a little different. The noodles are very skinny, not traditional pad Thai noodles. One thing I find odd is that they have Boba tea signs all over the place, but every time I've been they never have the pearls. Overall the food is ok, it's served quick, and it's a nice break from some of the more touristy island restaurants. read more
