Despite the moderately upscale ambiance and clean, contemporary aesthetic, the emptiness made us wonder: did we miss a memo? Was there a sudden local embargo on Mediterranean food? Luckily, the dining room eventually filled up, saving us from eating our dinner in a complete echo chamber. My dining companion and I started off with the Hummus appetizer ($11) served with a modest side of toasted pita. It was tasty and definitely hit the spot. We both decided to keep things light and ordered salads with a side of grilled salmon. I went with the Marouli salad ($16) -- crisp romaine lettuce, dill, and scallions with a lemon-olive oil dressing -- and my companion chose the Greek Village salad ($19), a shepherd-style salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, Holland peppers, feta cheese, olives, and Greek dressing. Both were fresh, well-prepared, and hit the mark. The salmon was also delicious, which is a good thing, because it came with an $18 upcharge that was not listed on the printed menu. For dessert, we ordered the baklava ($13), three pieces of an already intensely sweet treat that had apparently been subjected to an excessive dusting of powdered sugar. As for the service, our server and the food runners were competent but not overly friendly towards us or other diners. I also noticed that the staff tended to take care of tables out of order in which they were seated.. resulting in diners who arrived after us being served before us. Overall, it's a perfectly fine 3-star experience. I'd gladly go back if someone else was picking the spot, but if I'm the one in charge of dinner plans, I'll probably cast my net elsewhere in the area. PRO TIP #1: Bring a bottle of wine or beer from home or stop at the Wine Shop liquor store located on the opposite corner of the intersection of Main Street and Millburn Avenue for some adult beverages to enjoy with your meal. EVOO & Lemon is a BYOB establishment and does not serve alcohol. PRO TIP #2: EVOO & Lemon does not have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking and municipal lots nearby. Use the mPay2Park app for the pay-by-plate meters ($0.50 per hour). Meters operate Monday through Saturday from 8am to 7pm; all street meters are free after 7 pm and all day Sunday. If the street is full, the Essex Street parking deck (24 Lackawanna Place) is a reliable backup.

Use to be a great place before Mario took over from the other owner Angelo. During the time Angelo was there Angelo did a very professional job as Angelo took pride both in service and quality of food you could see Angelo poured his soul into the business and it reflected in the dishes and the service. Basilico is now left to a few Mexican and Ecuadorian gentlemen knowing very little about quality of food and service. The manager William previously waiter acts and portrays himself as the owner of the restaurant taking over from Mario. It is apparent since Angelo's departure the quality of food has gone downhill for example the fish specials or any fish dish on the menu and I have tried it all come out chewy and dry and many times burnt. The spaghetti bolognese has an after taste which is not so pleasant it has a canned preserved food taste as it's sauce base. I would not recommend these dishes nor this restaurant if you wish quality or service. I tried to inform Mario about the quality of food going downhill and the drop and lack of interest in customer service as he is hardly there Mario response is "I hardly eat here". So I said to him exactly my point " you don't eat here and probably not aware". Mario took my constructive feedback to an unprofessional level and writes bullying demeaning unwarranted responses including threats. I had seen first hand if any customer returned food for whatever reason the backlashes. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service!!!!!WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN A RESTAURANT... and i have been to A LOT of restaurants so that says something! The last thing you expect when you go to a restaurant is for the staff to STEAL from you! When we paid our bill, one of the waiters took $60 out in twenty-dollar bills and pocketed it... he then replaced what he took out with one-dollar bills and had the nerve to come back and say WE underpaid after we had already given him 20% tip! We knew he was lying because we didn't put that many one-dollar bills in there! Honestly, the waiter didn't even deserve a 20% tip because he was inattentive and was not friendly at all! The WORST was MARIO, the manager/owner. When we told him about what happened with the waiter, instead of investigating like any GOOD manager/owner would do, he had an attitude and yelled at us and then asked us to leave. In my opinion, Mario and the waiter plotted the whole thing out...their reactions were just not normal. So my advice to you is if you don't want to be stiffed when it comes to paying your bill, DON"T GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! There is some outdoor seating but the majority of seats are running along one wall in a bench type padded seating with a table across I don't like to sit so close to other people.it is not private . I gave it 3 because my friend had the papperdeli noodles (don't know how to spell this) and they were too thick and eggy. I had some great goat cheese and pear ravioli but they were soaking in too much buttery cream lemon type sauce. I noticed lots of regulars. We don't enjoy restaurant experiences when the tables are so close together that the people seated next to you are only a few inches away. At one point, the people next to us stopped talking and were both listening to my friend as she softly spoke about her vacation, the atmosphere is not to my liking. Food was good but not great. While we were waiting, we saw at least two other tables cancel their orders and ask for their checks after experiencing similar delays. About an hour and a half after we had been seated, our food finally arrived, even though we had already canceled it. We told the servers we no longer wanted it. By then, another 15 minutes had passed since we had given the waitress our credit card, yet we still hadn't received our check. We finally walked over to the bar to ask what was going on. That's when we learned our waitress had been holding onto our check so she could add the food to it. We explained, again, that we had canceled the order before it was ever served and would not be paying for meals we never received. Instead of understanding why we were frustrated after waiting over 90 minutes, she responded with attitude, which was honestly the most disappointing part of the evening. The manager overheard the conversation, apologized for the delay, but that was the extent of it. No offer to comp our drinks or appetizer, no attempt to make up for the experience, and no acknowledgment that we had spent over an hour and a half at the restaurant and left without the meal we came for. During that entire time, we received one round of drinks and an appetizer. No one offered another round of drinks, or provided any meaningful updates about our food. I understand that restaurants have difficult nights, and if the only issue had been a long wait, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. What made this experience so disappointing was how it was handled. We were patient from the moment we sat down, and simply asked to cancel our order because we had another commitment. After all of that, being met with attitude for refusing to pay for food that arrived only after we had canceled it, and seeing no real effort from the restaurant to make things right left us feeling like our experience simply didn't matter. We were genuinely excited to find a new local restaurant after moving to South Orange. Instead, our first visit was so disappointing that it will also be our last.

We ordered the banana bread appetizer, an egg tortilla bowl, a western omelet, and two kids' waffles. The banana bread appetizer didn't come out until the rest of our food arrived, and everything was ice cold. The breakfast potatoes tasted old, as if they had been made the day before. While it wasn't ideal, we tried to be understanding since it was a holiday and the staff may have been overwhelmed. The highlight of the meal was the fresh-squeezed orange juice that we enjoyed with our BYOB champagne. However, no one checked on our table during the meal, and I eventually had to stop someone just to ask for the check. When reviewing the bill, I realized the kids' waffles seemed more expensive than expected. Sure enough, we had been overcharged for each one. When I politely questioned it, I was told, "That's the price in our register," and the staff gave me a hard time about correcting it. After asking again, they reluctantly handed me cash for the difference. The waitress was rude and dismissive throughout the interaction. Overall, it was such a disappointing experience, especially compared to how much we enjoyed it last year. Sadly, we'll be choosing a different spot for Mother's Day brunch next year.

Our waitress was just fine, but it was clear she lacked proper training in basic service and restaurant etiquette. Honestly I don't think she wanted to be there, was wearing sweatpants and could barely hear her when she spoke. The issues with the food began right away. I ordered a fruit cup for my son and was initially told they didn't have fruit--despite it being listed on the menu. After pointing that out, it was brought to the table, but the fruit was clearly spoiled, especially the strawberries. They had tried to cut around the rotten parts, which was honestly disgusting and concerning given this was being served to a 2-year-old. We immediately sent it back. I ordered a burger with sautéed onions, but it came out with just a few small slivers of what turned out to be pickled onions instead. The burger itself looked incredibly lackluster. I ended up sending it back and, at that point, was completely turned off from ordering anything else. I also wasn't asked if I'd like to order a replacement, there was no apology, no accountability, just a blank stare while the plate was taken away. To make matters worse, we were still charged $6 for the fries that came with the burger, which my son had started eating before I sent it back. I hadn't taken a single bite of the actual meal. My husband's "Kobe beef" sliders came with bacon that was completely inedible, so he had to remove it. My mom ordered eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon but received regular (inedible) bacon instead, and my father's meal was served cold. Overall, the quality of the food across the table was just poor. The bathrooms were also in rough condition. The women's toilet seat was loose and coming off the hinges, I nearly fell. The bill came to $146 after tip, which felt like a complete waste given the experience. Afterward, we actually drove across the street so I could grab chicken soup elsewhere because I left hungry. This was our second time giving this place a chance, and unfortunately, it will be our last.
