This place is very inconsistent. I've eaten here about 5 times and 3 were not very good at all. The only reason I ate there for the 5th time was because it was for someone's 40th birthday dinner (which was very good.) My husband and I ate here for our anniversary. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner last year to celebrate his new job and a major accomplishment at mine. We grabbed a bottle of bubbly and a bottle of red and headed to Basilico. It was packed, but lucky for us they take reservations. We sat down and popped our champagne. We told the waiter we wanted to wait a little bit before ordering some appetizers, and he was very understanding. We each ordered an appetizer about 20 minutes later, and they were excellent. We then wanted to wait a little bit before ordering entrees, which he was also happy to oblige. We finished our champagne and he opened the red. I got goat cheese and pear ravioli, boyfriend got some kind of chicken; both were delicious. About 30 minutes after finishing dinner we got a chocolate sampler dessert and a tiramisu. We were one of the last tables in there, left a hefty tip, and were on our way with our bellies full. We were probably there for about 2 hours - our reservation wasn't until 8:00, so they were very accommodating as far as us taking our time was concerned. Such a nice place but such disappointing food. Caesar Salad had a very very odd taste maybe excessive mustard. Fusilli pasta with Cauliflower had little taste, not much cauliflower and the pasta itself was cooked way less than al-dente. Pizza had a thin crust but was dense and chewy. It also had the taste of an overly rich sauce and of being over-cooked. Cobb Salad, had a tasteless dressing along with being oily. Desserts were nice looking on the plate but were UN-remarkeable. Can't tell enough of this place. I go at least once a week, sometimes twice. For almost 10 years now. Every time that me and my husband go out with friends we end up at Basilico. The food is absolutely delicious and the service couldn't be more excellent that it is. Finally the dessert are absolutely to die for. Fresh, authentic but with a modern touch. It's definitely not the salty, lump-in-your-stomach Italian that you get at other restaurants in the area. Why not 5 stars? There's something imbalanced between the casual, open-air atmosphere and delicate fine dining. The food is definitely worth the money, but it feels like it needs a more formal setting. On the downside the wait staff did not seem to be 100% on the ball -- like being asked for a drink order twice, serving sparkling water to someone who ordered still, etc. The food, however, was good. I went here after work a couple of weeks ago with a friend. We shared the arancini appetizer that Anthony P. mentioned below. There are two generous size rice balls that were so creamy inside and crispy outside. I wonder if I can order this for lunch and take it with me. Anyway, I had the papardelle bolognese which was very good. It actually tasted even better then next day. My friend ordered pasta with sausage and broccoli rabe and she wasn't thrilled about it. I'm not sure why maybe because there was a red sauce on it and that's not how she likes it. I tasted it and it was okay but I did like mine better. If Yelp had 1/2 stars, this would be a 3 1/2 star review... but I would go back to give it another shot. Food: I ordered the tagliarini neri ai frutti di mare (squid ink spaghetti with mussels, shrimp, clams & calamari in a spicy tomato sauce). The pasta was cooked just the way I like it- al dente. The mussels, clams and shrimp were overcooked and the calamari was just a tad overcooked as well. There were some empty mussel shells-- boo :( The sauce and spaghetti was very salty for my taste-- this is what ruined the dish for me. You take a bite and know that you're going to drink water all night from the salt-- very similar to consuming MSG. The bread basket was very yummy. They give you a nice variety of 4-5 different types of bread with butter, hummus-like spread, and a red pepper in oil spread. Service: Very good and attentive staff. Overall, I was disappointed at how salty my pasta dish was. However, there are a lot of rave reviews so I would give it another shot. Next time, I'll definitely bring a bottle of wine and order a main entree (not pasta). read more

While we were seated promptly, even without a reservation, we weren't giving menus and our server seemed surprised when I asked for them. While there is a large bar, they only have half bottles and full bottles, so don't be deceived by that. Our appetizer was carpaccio, which more appropriately should've been called an arugula salad with carpaccio accents, as the ratio of arugula to meat is extremely high. All of our entrées were uniformly excellent. The short ribs were served with a rich sauce over a generous fan of risotto. The salmon was simply divine. It was accompanied by a nice array of roasted vegetables. And the pasta special of the evening, which featured spaghetti with lobster, shrimp, and vegetables, was fantastic. So why not a five-star review for this restaurant? Well, aside from the over-arugulaed salad, the service was not great. In addition to the menu issue, when we received our bread, we weren't given serving utensils to start, and then when we got our appetizer, they didn't give us appetizer plates to eat it with even though it was clear that we were sharing it. After eating that appetizer, those plates sat on the table. And sat on the table. And even though the wait staff were standing literally next to our table, they would not remove it and didn't until our entrées had already arrived and we were pushing the plates around trying to find space to put the entrée plates. So even though our check was served with a delicious array of candied lemon rind, I couldn't give this restaurant five stars. The sad thing is is, they had the potential for this. So I hope they work on their service to make this a truly exceptional dining experience. Sadly, right now it is not. read more

Basilico is one of the more upscale options in the area. Because I considered pricey, I hadn't gone in awhile (since an excellent lunch about a year ago). So we went on a weeknight a few days ago and had a very good dinner. The overall vibe felt sophisticated and the service was really excellent. The food was very well presented, but was just "good" (not great), and a bit expensive for what we got. I suspect the food varies from "good" (what we experienced) to "very good", judging from the other orders we saw coming out of the kitchen, which looked yummy. I'd definitely return for a special night out out when I want to stay local. Its BYOB, which helps (somewhat) offset the prices. read more

I was just at Basilico Restaurant, and as usually, we had another great dining experience. We had homemade pasta served in a Bolognese sauce. I love their Bolognese sauce, it is so good that I take their homemade bread and wipe the plate clean!! We also had Bronzino in a garlic lemon herb sauce. The fish was so fresh and moist. A winner in my book! What I like about the restaurant is that the owner, Mario, is there a lot. In most restaurants you never see the owner. I see him socializing with his customers very often. I also want to mention that the manager, William, does an excellent job accommodating his customers no matter how busy they are. I have been here many times and find the food good, but the service is terrible! On more than one occasion we have been rushed to leave and the staff has been rude. Recently, I tried to book a large party there for my daughter's rehearsal dinner. I was told I had to guarantee 35 people to reserve the mezzanine area. I was supposed to have 37 guests so I agreed. I left $100 deposit to hold the mezzanine. I then found out that the number of guests would only be 30. I called today, spoke to the manager and asked if we could be seated in the lower area since I would only have 30 guests .The manager was rude and dismissive. He said I would need to have 60 people to be seated in the lower level. I explained that over the summer we had a party of 25 and sat on the lower level. Couldn't we have a party of 30 on the lower level?He told me absolutely not! I said that I didn't want to pay for 7 additional people. He said nothing they could do. That's the way it is! I couldn't believe that this man would not accommodate my dinner for 30 people! 25 ok. 35 ok. But not 30? Are you kidding me? I asked if I could cancel the reservation. The manager told me the $100 was non refundable. I reminded him that my dinner party was 10 weeks away. Didn't he think he would get reservations in 10 weeks?He did refund the $100. When I told my daughter about canceling later that day,she was upset. She really wanted the dinner there. She said there were additional friends they could invite. Her fiancé called the restaurant 3 hrs after I canceled and asked to reserve the mezzanine again, assuring him we could guarantee the minimum number of people. The manager told him that the mezzanine was already booked and that my deposit was refunded. Really? What a jerk! Basilico is a very busy restaurant. So busy, that they really don't care about their customers or making a good impression. The service was great and the food was even better. I had the insalata de casa which was arugula with mozzarella and roasted red pepper with shaved parmigiana cheese. It was delicious! My boyfriend had the ceasar salad with anchovies, he enjoyed very much. For enteees we had the Salmon special with shiitake mushroom and spinach...yummy! My boyfriend had the organic chicken Marsala with potatoes and vegetables...delicious. For dessert I had the creme brûlée which was delicious. I ate here last night with a party of five. We were excited, having heard good things from friends, and because we would be sitting on the patio on the first really nice day of spring. The food was OK, nothing really stood out, and we didn't finish one plate all night. The homemade pasta was good consistency, and the mix of ingredients was interesting, but the flavoring was off. The desserts were pretty solid. But what was upsetting was the service. Our waiter was indifferent and almost rude all evening, rolling his eyes when we ordered. We asked him to bring ice for one of our bottles of prosecco, and while the ice bucket was already set up five steps from the table, it seemed a great effort for him to put the unopened bottle in. When pouring too, he spilled and never bothered to try to clean up. There's more anecdotes like this, but we all know bad service so... Part of a dining experience is service, and it's a hefty part of the tab at the end of the night.
