Basil's Greek will have you saying OPA with a capital O-face! Hip, Hip, Hooray for fine, affordable Greek dining in the burbies. Basil's is great for a romantic dinner, group of friends, business meeting, or fun little birthday dinner between friends... aka, Alicia B and I (Happy B-Day, Girlie!). We decided to start the night off right with a bottle of champers, some zucchini and eggplant chips, and, of course, saganaki. OPA! The champagne was delicious and all of their drink prices (whether bottles or glasses) were inexpensive. The zucchini and eggplant chips were A to the Maze to the Zing. More so than Lays potato chips, you can't eat just one. In fact you'll probably want a second order of the already large plate with deliciously pungent garlic dipping sauce, but don't fret, you've still got your saganaki coming. simply put, the s'naki will leave you wanting s'more. It was probably the very best fried cheese I'd ever had and it's become a staple in my daily food fantasies. For dinner we split a Greek salad and their vegetarian flatbread. I would've enjoyed a few more olives on the salad but overall it was light, crisp, and enjoyable. The flatbread was amazing with it's oh so thin and flaky crust and generous toppings. It was just what I needed to be stuffed to the gills... that is, until they brought out some warm, gooey, rolls of baklava. Yea, I didn't think we had it in us to eat more either but we sucked those puppies down. All in all, we took a chance on a new Greek restaurant and it paid off. The service made us feel like VIPs, the food was outstanding, and the prices were incredibly reasonable. I had to do a double take on the bill because I thought for the quality of food and the bottle of champagne that it would have been more than twice the cost. About a week ago, I got an e-mail from one of the managers apologizing for the negative experience in my recent review, and he invited me and my boyfriend back to have dinner on the house. This gesture tells me that 1) They take their customers' satisfaction seriously and 2) They run their restaurant with professionalism I wish these traits weren't so uncommon in restaurant/business managers, but there you go. We've all heard horror stories about Yelpers getting shit from owners/managers after posting a negative review (I've even been harassed by one), but this experience with Basils helped to restore my faith in restaurant management. I accepted their generous offer for a comped dinner, and the food was delicious as usual. I ordered the Lamb Kokkinisto Spanakorizo, which is lamb braised in tomato sauce and served with spinach rice. The meat was incredibly tender and the sauce was just excellent with the rice. For dessert, we split the baklava (my favorite) and it was also fantastic. Sometimes baklava can be soaked in too much honey, but this was just right. The presentation was much different than usual: it was sliced in four pieces on the plate, rather than served in a large square or triangle piece. Purists may scoff (our waitress said that one older Greek woman actually argued with her that it wasn't *really* baklava), but I thought it was cute and unique. Oh man I didnt think the food could get any better until me and the BF made an anniversary visit. The food was O sooo good! By far the best Greek food ever! We ordered the hell outa the menu,saganaki,zucchini chips, and beets that were on special.Ahhh the beets were so good and sided with that garlicky dip stuff,make a me happy! The owner Jimmy sent over some cheese stuffed peppers that were outa this world! Cheesy,rich and delish. Perhaps it was silly of me to go in on a Saturday night without making reservations, but it was kind of late so I figured my friend and I could just grab a seat at the bar and watch the Bulls game while munching on some Greek salads. You know, something a little different (and classier) than typical game day sports bar stuff. When I arrived, the hostess told me it'd be a 45 minute wait because even the seats at the bar are reserved. You're kidding, right? After about 20 minutes, I checked in with the hostess and she asks if it'd be okay if we sat in the bar area. I was confused because not only was that what I had originally requested, was she not planning to seat us if I had not asked? My friend and I literally stared at the empty seats and wondered why we were not allowed to sit down. Whatever, just give me a chair. Upon being seated, we were immediately given our menus and glasses of water (with slices of lemon on the side which was a nice touch). Not long after, our waitress came by to take our orders. We said we weren't ready and she responds by tapping on the menu and saying "well, let's get on it girls." Perhaps if she had said it with a smile or a giggle, it would be playful and cute. However, she had a permanent scowl on her face so it was just rude. This attitude continued the rest of the night and definitely did not alleviate the already stressful atmosphere created by the conversation my friend and I were having... but I digress. Basils is an upscale Greek restaurant on the outer ring/out lot of the a large shopping mall. The place was quiet when we went there during the week. We had a variety of starters. Gyros, grilled octopus, and dolmades. The gyros was my favorite. It's a homemade gyro meat and not the distributor bought meat. The other two were good too, but the uniqueness and tastiness of the gyro meat was a standout. We had a large Greek salad to share for the table. This is the way to do it since it's a large bowl of salad. As the main course, I had the fish special, which was fresh and well prepared. Finally, we finished up with the dessert. Home made cheesecake, Baklava Sundae, and the Chocolate Lava Cake. Cheesecake is my recommendation for everyone. The place is very nice and is a solid place for upscale Greek food. The homemade food is definitely what sets it apart from the other random Greek places that you find in the suburbs. read more

We had late lunch here on a Saturday. The ambiance is great with a visible kitchen. There weren't many people in the restaurant given the time of day, so we didn't need to wait to get seated at all. Service was good and prompt. We ordered hummus as starter and it was really good. Coarse hummus with warm pita bread! They also served some sesame bread with butter which was fresh and yummy too. For our main course we ordered chicken kabob, vodka gnocchi and basil pasta. I personally ate the chicken kabob and it was truly delicious. The grilled vegetables were done to perfection, the chicken was flavorful and the rice and gravy was good too. The other dishes were both vegetarian dishes and my family loved them. I will add pictures of these dishes to this review - they are all highly recommended, especially the chicken kabob! Nothing bad to report here... A very positive lunch experience! read more

Basils had the most disgusting Greek food I have ever eaten in my life. I love Greek food and have tried dozens of Greek restaurants in my life. Nothing compares to the slop they served. Every single dish had some sort of spice (cinnamon or nutmeg) overpowering the taste of the food. Therefore, EVERYTHING We ordered tasted the same...and terrible. I know with certainty that I will NEVER return to this restaurant. Honestly, the food just isn't edible. The service was great and the ambiance was also wonderful....but I have to stick to my one star because ugh, the food was horrible! Totally disappointed. This used to be a favorite but after not having visited for a couple of years we came back to discover a mediocre overpriced meal was awaiting us. The scallops were overcooked and rubbery. The shrimp was undercooked. In the same dish. The Basils chicken was yummy. The Basils pasta, promising to be angel hair pasta, olive oil, basil and garlic with red sauce was drowning in red sauce (what was the point of the other ingredients?) and cost $18!!!! No protein! Just a bowl of pasta. What a joke. For that price there should be a chicken, shrimp or something in it. It was spaghetti marinara. We won't be back. What a shame. read more

We went to the restaurant just because i purchased restaurant.com certificate. The Ambiance and Service are good. We ordered Chicken Flat Bread. They took time to serve but that was delicious. Then we ordered Main Course. Chicken Pagitima (Kind of Pasta) and Seafood (Prawn) course. Both are not good. The price is too high for that taste. A great choice for a special occasion dinner! My husband brought me here when I got a promotion at work, knowing that I love Greek food. It was a Tuesday night, so pretty much all the "special occasion" places would've been wide open, but we finally ventured to give this place a go. It's been at it's location for 4-5 years at least, and if you know anything about this area, places go out of business VERY quickly if they don't do somewhat well. The place is classy, but not so classy that you can't go in jeans. The manager sat us as soon as we walked in and spent a good 5 minutes telling us about the menu and how it is laid out...the small plates, the entrees...the steaks, which sounded mouth-watering by the time he was through with this elevator pitch...and the beer/drink menu. He was super enthusiastic (obviously, he's the manager), but not in a salesy way. I pretty much wanted everything on the menu, because of him! Bravo, sir! Back to the beer/wine/drink menu...what a surprise, they had a really outstanding beer selection! I had no idea. Greek places tend to specialize in wine, so being the beer geek I am, I was over the moon. They had just had an Allagash tap takeover, so the selection for Allagash was more than I've ever seen in my life. They also had the locals (Two Bros and Solemn Oath), between the draft and bottle selection. So BEER NERDS UNITE, this place is far from shabby. We started with the saganaki...very delicious, great presentation by the waitress, and great for 2-3 people (or hey, enough for just me). I ordered the lamb entree with the tomato sauce (can't remember for the life of me what it is called) and my husband got the moussaka. His moussaka was excellent. My lamb was really great, although I think next time I'll get it without the tomato sauce. Don't get me wrong, it was very tasty, I think I'm just a bit of a minimalist when it comes to sauces (personal preference). It was a hell of a lot of lamb, I was stuffed at the end. My only complaint would be that the potatoes were just ok. They were just kind of boring, huge potato wedges, and I think there is a missed opportunity there. Really nice, classy place. I want to go here sometime and sit in there outdoor patio area, with their stringed lights and outdoor fireplace...it stinks that the view is of the Fox Valley Mall, but I think a few drinks and moussaka will pull me back to the vibe that Basil's offers. read more

Horrible service and awful food culminated to one of the worst dining experience I have ever had. My wife, daughter and I all went to this place, in part because we love Greek food and also based on the rating this establishment received. The initial wait was not too bad (20 minutes), which gave my wife some time to order a chocolate martini. That would be the highlight of the night unfortunately. Once seated we were left without any utensils (something that isn't necessarily bad) it took 15 minutes to remedy this, after our appetizers had arrived. This was the first hint to the quality of service we would get. We ordered the calamari, which were not too bad, if you didn't dip them in the ketchup-like sauce that accompanied it. During this time we noticed that other tables around us were given a basket of bread with their meal, something that never graced our table. For the dinner, my wife ordered the pastichio and I the roasted lamb. My wife took one bite and lost her appetite, I decided to have one as well. I can best describe it as tasting like lukewarm Chef Boyardee after sitting out for a couple days. My wife asked me if that is what it supposed to taste like. I replied, "I hope not." My lamb was a bit overcooked and was quite dry. We luckily ordered a appetizer plate for my daughter (Gyros) so my wife shared that with her and I drudged through the rest of my meal. I was given one refill on my iced tea, but no one came around to fill up our waters. When asked if we wanted to take my wife's meal home, we replied with a resounding, "No." We skipped dessert and took care of the bill. (Smallest tip I had given in years of 10%) My family will not be returning to this place. Love the interior! Also love the patio...we didn't sit out there (due to rain) but we definitely will next time! The staff was very nice and always there when you needed something. My gyro was okay, I would have preferred to get one big pita opposed to 3 small slices of pita bread for assembling the gyro. I also would have liked to see some rice with the dish (which is how a gyro platter is normally served). We were with a group and everyone else loved their food. The "basils salmon" is very good. The chicken parmigiana was "ok" but that is to be expected considering it is not a speciality dish one would order from a Greek restaurant. Also, all the desserts are amazing!!!! I would like to thank my brother and his wife for running late last night. You see, we were supposed to meet for dinner in downtown Naperville, but they were late leaving their house in Plano and suggested we meet near Fox Valley instead. They had been to Basils before and enjoyed it, so we headed there. Mom and I arrived early and enjoyed a seasonal Goose Island brew in the spacious, airy bar. When my bro and sis-in-law arrived, we grabbed a table in the main dining room. We would have liked to sit outside on the sprawling patio (complete with fire pit!) but it was on the breezy side. Hopefully we can check that out next time. We ordered two appetizers to start - spanakopita and crab cakes. The spanakopita was perfectly cooked. The phyllo dough was crisp but not burnt and the filling was seasoned with more dill than I'm used to - but that just made it better! I didn't get to try the crab cakes because my brother wolfed them down! Going by the look on his face, I'm guessing they were delicious as well. For my entree, I ordered vegetarian dolmades. Oh my, were they tasty. At other places, grape leaves have a tendency to get a bit slimy. Not here. My dish was amazing. The rice was perfectly cooked and the seasonings were savory without being overpowering. A hefty squeeze of lemon juice kept the whole meal tart and tangy. I would have preferred that the Greek yogurt sauce that came with the dish had a bit more seasoning, but I'm a big-time sauce girl. My sauces can never be overseasoned or too spicy. I'm sure if I had mentioned this to our waiter, he would have been happy to find me some hot sauce - but I wolfed down my meal before I had a chance. My mom ordered mousaka, my sister-in-law had gyros and my brother ordered meatballs. The smiling faces around the table let me know that everyone was just as blissed out by their meals as I was. Although most of us were stuffed by the time the dessert menus we came out, we still gamely ordered tiramisu, which was light, fluffy and not soggy in the slightest - the curse of lesser tiramisu. Oh, and for what it's worth (and it's worth a lot to me), the bathrooms were very clean. I have to say that the prices were very reasonable for the quality of food we received. For two appetizers, four entrees and a dessert, our bill was only $90. Basils is a bit out of the way from where I live, but it's completely worth the trip! Decided to try this place based on the reviews. Well I'm kind of disappointed, I mean it is a beautiful and very clean place, some of the plates were delicious, some very disappointing. I personally was very surprised and not on a good way that the charge .25 cents for the piece of pita bread....who does that??? Service was good and friendly, I didn't like they did not have platter options on the dinner menu. We found ourselves very limited as we all liked like different things and some if us had to sacrifice as it didn't make any sense to order so many food when not everyone was going to enjoy it. Someone was hungry for gyros, and since Basil's came up on my phone's Yelp app as highly reviewed, off we went. It's a big place - the parking lot seemed full, however the restaurant itself had a lot of room inside. They have a large Greek menu as well as some (to me) odd items - like ribs. I don't know why every restaurant in Chicago has to serve ribs, but this place is no exception. Anyway, I ordered the keftedes (at the recommendation of the waitress, over the moussaka) and my companion ordered the gyros. Gyros were good, but pretty standard. They came as a "plate" - meaning not the sandwich you might think of, but a plate with the sliced meat, pita quarters, and toppings. They could have give us more tomato and less onion, but they were good (and frankly, just as good if not better the next day when I reheated the leftovers in the frying pan and browned the outside of the shaved meat a little). My keftedes were a pleasant surprise. I wasn't really sure what to expect, and at first bite, they were just OK, but they kept getting better. They're mild meatballs, seasoned with a good blend of spices (including lots of cinnamon, so don't get this if you don't like cinnamon in savory foods) and served with a kind of slightly sweet red/brown gravy and rice. By the end of the meal, I really liked these. They were also good the next day - would definitely recommend to someone. And it was a huge serving, I still had several for lunch the next day. I would definitely come back here - want to try some other things: a near by table had both fish and chicken dishes that looked really good, but I would also get either of the gyros or the keftedes. I love Greek Food, always have. Greek food to me should be an explosion of flavor! Most places I've been to are, but that's just most places. Basil's isn't exactly most places. This restaurant is very pretty and classy. It's definitely a nice going out place, I was actually a little surprised a place this nice would border a mall, but it does and hey good foot traffic! I've tried this place maybe 3 times with the hubs and every time we're there I want to like it more than I do. The sad thing is I can never remember what I've had and what I thought of it. So the food has never been memorable. But this last visit, I made the connection of why! I got the Spanakopita, a staple and one of my favorites. It wasn't bad per se, but it lacks something, the extra flavor that I crave from Greek food. This to me doesn't taste like traditional Greek food, its Americanized Chain-Restaurant type Greek Food. The prices are also a tad high for my tastes especially for the quality I am expecting. The only thing I really liked at Basil's that was different is the garlic butter stuff they put out with the bread, Other than that, meh. I am also going to note that during one visit here the waiter, manager; host-y person was not so nice. It was a special restaurant anniversary event and they were busy and we waited...and waited and he let his friends in over and over again. So we asked what was up he pretty much gave us a "No Greek food for you" response and punished us by letting random stragglers in. I am always a little scared to try out a new restaurant cause you never know what you are going to get. This place was was great. I love the open feeling you get when you walk into the dining room. Seems a lot of places just want to shove you in. Our waiter was prompt and very polite and even helped my dad with his dinner selection. I have been to pretty much all the Greek restaurants in Greek town (Chicago) and this one out does a lot of them. For appetizers we ordered the saganaki and terokefteri. The terokefteri was delicious... very creamy and just the right amount of kick. For dinner I ordered the veggie moussaka and the veggies were perfectly cooked... slightly crunchy and not soggy at all. This was probably one of the best veggie moussaka's I have ever had. Went to dinner yesterday night 10/24/12 and it happened to be their annual anniversary event where the whole menu was 50% off!!!!! I was expecting since the restaurant was jam packed with a 2 hour wait for tables the service WOULD be bad and the food WOULD be sub- par..... boy, was I WRONG!!! My whole experience was excellent and one that was needed since, I was starting to hate eating out due to poor quality and service. Even though the restaurant had a 2 hour wait, I explained to the host that my sister had work and if possible to be seated quicker. The host was great, within a half hour we were seated and had our bread, butter, water, olive oil, lemons on the table. The server greeted us immediately and brought all our food out in a good time frame. Ive had greek food plenty of times and unfortunately was never excited about the experience. Decent Greek restauarant for the burbs. I went the other night with my fiance and we sat out on their really nice patio. I kind of had to laugh when the bubbly blonde waitress said the food was extremely authentic. *cough* Having just moved from the city.....a mere 5 minutes from Greektown and having been to the actual county of Greece, I just smiled and said "Okay". lol. The food was decent....and fairly priced. I had the seafood salad that was pretty fresh and a HUGE portion. The vinegrette dressing was really good. My fiance had a lamb roast on rice with spinach and a red sauce that had great spices in it as well! However, he did want to order one of the lamb specials, but they had already run out and it was only 7pm on a Friday night. Since the place has a great patio and is just around the corner from us, I am sure we will be frequent customers. read more

I am a huge fan of this place. It brings the class and quality of greektown to the Burbs. Like any long lasting relationship I've had my ups and downs. Like, when I've been here on signature date nights like Valentine's Day and made a reservation I still had to wait over an hour for a table. But, those kind of problems happen few and far between. For the most part, I walk in get a table and love everything I've eaten here. The Gyros is good, but I wish it came with greek potatoes as just a huge mound of meat leaves a little to be desired. Although this is the highest quality gyros meat you will get. I learned something once about gyros, even though a lot of these places buy from the same suppliers their is different grades of meat. I always start everything off with their saganaki. It very good. Also their bread is usually amazing and very addicting. Add the two together and you got yourself a great start to any meal. I've tried their Avgolemono a few times, and it is pure comfort food for me. Just the right amount of lemon and the cream is not too thick. Two things that stand out more than anything is: Their Pork Chops are amazing and huge. And, for dessert get the Baklava Cheesecake and drift off into a food coma that will leave you mumbling to yourself as your loved one's help you find your way to the car. I wish I could give 4.5 stars as this is one place that would get it. We ate here last Saturday night, sat out on the patio which was very nice. The service is wonderful very personable and the GM stopped by twice to see if there was anything we needed. He offered to move us under the canopy as it looked like it was about to rain, which it did a little later. Fortunately we had finished dinner and we finished our drinks inside the bar. The place is very nicely decorated and is actually not located in the right place for the type of restaurant they are.(I'm sure they'd do better in downtown Naperville) The food is very authentic and delicious, if you don't like Greek food they have American dishes that I'm sure are as good. My girlfriend is Greek and knows the good stuff when she has it. The only negative to the evening was when a bus boy was pushing a cart of dirty dishes past us to get to the back of the restaurant. I'm not sure why he'd be going outside the building to do this. To make it worst as he made his way thru a gate he slammed it.... not a very romantic setting if you know what I mean. OPA! This is probably one of the better Greek restaurants that I have eaten at in this area. Fortunately I had stumbled across an advertisement that for 3 days only that everything on their menu would be 50% off to celebrate their anniversary. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to find out that this also INCLUDED alcohol. It was crazy crowded, which one could probably expect with an event like this and the waitstaff wasn't the fastest at getting tables turned around, but once we got seated everything was great from that point on. Our waiter was in an exceptionally good mood for someone who had been working in the midst of all this chaos and made excellent suggestions when it came to things to order. Because everything was 50% off - I took advantage and ordered things that I have always wanted to try. I had the saganaki, Tirokafteri, Avgolemano Soup and a Greek salad. The Greek salad was excellent and everything else was very good. I also had the Bread Pudding for dessert, which was just as "orgasmic" as the waiter suggested that it would be. I was super full by the end of it, almost enough to be sick. But I had paid next to nothing for all of this delicious food and had a great time. The drinks were great too - they do have martini and wine flights if you are into that kind of thing. Wonderful Greek food. I had the shrimp and scallops they were fresh and perfectly cooked and my brother had the lamb shank that was huge and delicious. We also had desert of Galaktoboureko and it was definitely the best I've ever had - normally it's traditionally egg custard in phyllo but they've kicked it a notch by adding orange zest. Amazing experience. from the time we stepped in to this lovely restaurant we were greeted with attention at reception and was seated at the table. We were celebrating our daughter's 13th birthday over our family dinner. Every staff from the courteous manager to the waitress to the crew were excellent. Food was fabulous. Yes, back again and again it was very very tasty. I started off with the sea food gumbo yum yum it had a lot of meat in the bowl. Next that followed was a gyro. Their spinach & artichoke appetizer is probably the single best appetizer I have ever tasted at any restaurant. The grilled chicken skewers were excellent. Nothing too different or fancy, just superb flavor and juicy as can be. My gf loved her salad (greek, mediterranean? I forget) 5 stars all the way. And for dessert the galaktabouriko (sp?) was out of this world. Probably our spot for Valentine's Day. We can' wait. Go there, don't hesitate. Also, the waitress was outstanding. It probably fell a little short of my expectations, but I had a decent meal. My only visit thus far was a few nights ago. The service was pretty poor. It takes awhile to get a refill, and our server kept forgetting about things that we needed in our party of six. The prices are really expensive here for what it is. If you want lamb some of the entrees are in the forty dollar range. Luckily, we went on a night that they were having half price specials. I probably would only recommend going on a night like that, because it won't be a very good value otherwise. The food itself was not bad, but I think I went into the meal with really high expectations. I enjoyed the roast lamb, and my wife enjoyed the lamb chops, but those plates are expensive as I mentioned. Stay away from the desserts. They aren't worth it. My wife ordered just a bowl of plain strawberries for dessert, and got charged seven dollars for them. We thought that was unnecessarily high. All of the appetizers our table shared were quite good. That was probably the best part of the meal. I may or may not come back, but if I do it will be with some kind of deal or special going on. read more

Went here for the grand opening, I love the decor inside and out. Nice photos of Greek island on the flatscreens by the bar. Now their menu is covered with basil even down to the dessert which was basil ice cream. Very delicious food and intriguing menu. read more

So I'll just tell you how my time here went. Checked in at around 8. Got checked on twice to make sure I was being taken care of. Ordered gyros - generous portion. My boyfriend and I went there last night for the first time because we had a gift certificate from restaurant.com. The host did a really good job, he said 20-30 minutes and got us in in 20 minutes. The waitress took awhile to come by our table, we told her we were ready to order, she took our appetizer order then left, she never returned to take our dinner order until after the appetizer came out, in fact, we never saw her until it came out (this was after bread, water, and drinks were brought to us). The roasted garlic was good, the bread with garlic butter was good, when dinner came the food was ok except that one of our dishes was incorrect, unfortunately we never saw our waitress to say anything. Our waitress rarely came by, the restaurant was busy and she probably had too many tables, when she was there she was not very friendly, my soda was never refilled until we were almost done with our meal. I might go back on a week night when they have less people, there were enough things on the menu that I'd like to try something different. read more
