Awful service and messed up order on a slow Wednesday afternoon. Went in at 12pm 10/28 and ordered three sandwiches and a cookie. The guy that took our order was rude, even after we made sure he got our order correct cause it didn't seem like he heard us clearly and made snide remarks. They ended up toasting our kids peanut butter sandwich, but not our Brie sandwich? We were the only customers, so not sure why it was messed up. Please get it together. read more

Not a good experience. They were rude. I couldn't have been more disappointed. We were hungry and choose this establishment due to them publicizing a couple different veggie sandwiches. I placed my boyfriend's sandwich order- grilled cheese and then placed mine - a veggie sandwich to which they replied that they were no longer making it. They offered the sandwich with egg and cheese which they would have removed those items leaving it to just spinach and tomatoes on bread. I asked if they could removed the cheese for the grilled panini to that request they replied those sandwiches were pre-made and couldn't be altered. Between being rude when entering the store to them not making food items on their menu board I can only provide a one star rating. Maybe some one else would have a better experience. The workers were pretty rude and we waited like 20 minutes for 3 things, got my name wrong so they were calling the wrong name for like 5 minutes and she got at attitude after them getting the name wrong, overall service was subpar considering going through all that to have my breakfast burrito be super dry. read more

Absolutely Disappointing! I stopped by Basque Boulangerie to grab lunch and was hoping to get a nice simple meal. I ordered the Prosciutto & Brie sandwich ($10.25) and my wife ordered a simple Turkey sandwich ($8.50). When we received our sandwiches, it looked like a small bread roll with a small glimpse of what we had selected. It was so RIDICULOUS, we had a hard time distinguishing which sandwich has what in it. $12,500.00 is what my husband and I have spent at this bakery over the last 5 years. Not because the food was great or the coffee spectacular but because we met friends there most mornings ...kind of like our morning "cheers "..a village full of great people. that all came to an end about four months ago when the manager Carmen, was extremely rude to me for asking her for a simple redo of a coffee because it wasn't done to my specifications. She was extremely rude so I yelped her and the bakery.At the time Sunny was the owner, and shortly there after I apologized to him for not coming in and talking to him directly. None of that went very well and I took the post down meanwhile we since tried to return to the bakery to purchase a coffee and a breakfast item I was informed that I wasn't allowed into the building, and to leave. By yes CARMEN! So having already said the food isn't that great. The service I received over the five years has been hit and miss as long as it's not Carmen it's been fine. Sunny was always a delight but like I said I never went there for the food or the coffee. So having never been kicked out of anywhere in my entire life, especially for somebody being rude to me, I am reposting a one star. For extremely poor rude service!! I've attempted this place on a few occasions. I've been disappointed each and every time. The first time I came was with some company we had in town. We walk in and couldn't decide on what to get. The menu has a lot going on for first timers. The girl who we were asking questions to was unhelpful and acted like she didn't even care to help us. She looked annoyed that we were even asking her questions. We decided to walk out and not get anything because of the attitude we felt the moment we walked in. Then I decided to try it again.... same bad customer service... but I ordered a TO-GO order. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and pasta. It was yummy, but they only put chicken salad on a bed of lettuce and I got no bread, they forgot about the sandwich part I guess. The quantity was small and overpriced. Came in for the beehive cake and there was none. Purchased a cinnamon raison bread which tasted like bland white bread with very few raisins and zero cinnamon, used to be alot better. Also got the tomato soup which was like water mixed with catsup... horrible, no depth, it was acidic, threw it away. Lastly got the prosciutto and brie sandwich. The sourdough bread was amazing, meat was tasty but my half had hardly any pear whereas my husband had alot on his side, the brie was cut paper thin and hard to even find much less taste. I used to absolutely love this place, but after my last visit I can no longer recommend it. From the chaos and chaotic service to the messy haphazardly thrown out orders - it was not a good ordering or receiving experience. The biggest disappointment was the quality of the food and baked goods - it's gone way down. From undercooked soggy cold pastry which should be room temp and crispy to my sandwich which should have had Gruyère but had plastic tasting American cheese. 0/10 on food. Not bad! My husband and I checked out a furniture sale in the area, so we stopped by here for some pastries. I guess I need to come back to try some other items, because the place was PACKED. There must be something good here to warrant this line. I had a regular cheese danish and my husband had a croissant sandwich, both were really good. I had a hot apple cider with whip cream. I love when places serve hot items other than coffee, thank the lord above. We sat at the counter, but there are tables inside and a few outside available. We came around noon and every table was sat. I like the location because its a cute little area with a bunch of shops. We walked around a little bit since it was nice weather. This time, we made a stop at another one our favorite bakeries, the Basque Boulangerie Cafe. This place is always packed with both tourists and locals. And for good reason. Soon as one enters the cafe, they will see 4 big display cases full of pastries and desserts, and behind these cases is a huge array of different loaves and breads, lined against the wall behind the counters persons. I there are cookies, muffins, different varieties of Danish, turnovers, ...... It's not unusual for people to just looking through the display cases, slowly moving shelf to shelf. We picked up some of their chocolate chewy cookies, orange-cranberry-coconut cookies, snickerdoodles, a roll of their pull apart sourdough loaf, and a half dozen of their cheese sticks. Gayle and I don't visit the historical Sonoma Plaza often, but when we do this is where we go for a little caffeine pick-me-up. Yesterday was no exception as we had hit a slow spot mid-afternoon after a short day of wine tasting followed by Lunch. The inside was busy and the service was prompt as usual. We both enjoyed our fresh and hot black coffee (the true test of a java joynt) and I picked up a delicious raisin danish for this morning's breakfast. Fresh bread, lunch items, and many more pastries are also available, but that will have to wait until next time. read more

This cafe used to be a community staple in decades past: great bread, fresh salads, and really delectable sandwiches. I stopped by recently and the inside is drab (gone are the nice bread displays behind the counter), the menu is paired down and also gone are favorites like the Niçoise salad. We ordered the tuna melt and roast chicken sandwich and both were so dry and so hard that they weren't edible. There were hardly and baked goods in the displays and also lacking was the beehive cake--which this cafe was known for. Convenient if you're already near the square, not so convenient if you intend to find parking. We came across this cafe on New Years Day when most everything else was closed. It was chilly as heck outside and a nice warm apple cider was something that begged to be drank. We walked in to a rather full cafe. Sweet treats and savory breads lined the cases. Being late in the afternoon they were a bit picked over, but still had plenty of things to choose from. A pumpkin croissant called to me. And I answered. Buttery and flaky with a center of sweet pumpkin; it was an affair to remember. The apple ciders left something to be desired. They needed a little extra something as they really just tasted like warm apple juice. This cafe was just what was needed on this chilly New Years afternoon. My husband and I stopped here for a late breakfast before a winery visit. They had a large variety of pastries and breads that looked delicious! My husband saw an ancient grain bread, and asked the woman taking out order if she knew the type of grain used (odd question, yes, but he makes bread himself with several different types of ancient grains, and being that we were in a bakery it didn't seem like *that* strange of a question. oh my god. I am in love with this place! over the past several years I have visited Basque Boulangerie, enjoying the many pastries and lunch delights. Yesterday I had a peach danish with an Italian roast coffee--nice huge peach half over a beautiful custard. On previous occasions, I've enjoyed the salade nicoise, with all the fresh veggies and great tuna, as well as their fine interpretation of a beesting. Can't seem to get enough of Basque Boulangerie! Review of bread only, not the café: I've tasted many varieties of the bread that Basque makes. And I invariably do not enjoy them. Why? Tough leathery exterior, super chewy inside, heavy texture, heavy mouth feel, and less than appetizing flavor. Several years ago I held a Sonoma county bread competition. 10 folks rated over 25 breads. Basque rated in the lower 1/3 compared against others. Basque is better than Safeway or Franco-American, but worse than Artisan, Village bakery, Grace, Mezza-luna, and winner Costeaux. read more

It's a solid, quick, wallet-friendly breakfast spot in the heart of Sonoma Square. Their pastry shelf is intoxicating to look at. We picked up a couple their fruit-topped croissants, both delicious. The pear-almond beat the peach-cream cheese, although not by much. The next day, we went back to pick up their vegetable, onion-based quiche. They also have a meat quiche of the day that flavor rotates. Coffee is decent (free refills if you dine in), the espresso is weak sauce. I didn't get to try their famous beehive cake; for that, I am ashamed. Next time. The one issue is that the location is small, so all the seats are generally taken during breakfast hours.
