When we first entered the bakery, we were the only one there and were barely greeted as if we were bothering the only two people behind the counter. One of them absolutely could not speak a word of English and thank God I'm fluent in Spanish so I could communicate. The pastry case was almost bare with the exception of a few muffins and the ones that we bought and tried, were very dry. It made me think they were from the day before. It was 1130am when we got there so I am sure there was not a crowd of 100 that had preceded us for the display case to be so empty. I have not been to Sonoma in a few years and that is not how I remember this bakery . Upon inquiry I found out that these are new owners and that explains how it went down in quality. Needless to say, I will not go back and it's sad because I always enjoyed it there. The new people need to do better if they want to keep the clientele coming in. We stopped into Basque Cafe when we were exploring the Downtown Sonoma town square area when we were looking for a low key sandwich and salad lunch. It's located near the Sonoma Town Hall, and has a large outdoor patio area for dining. My partner and I stopped in on a weekday for a late lunch and we both ordered the Chicken Salad on Croissant ($10.50), and split a side salad ($6). They prepared everything freshly for you and you pick it up at the counter where you can take your food to your table of your choice. Everything was very fresh and flavorful and it was exactly what we were looking for for a light lunch. Definitely recommend trying them if you're in the Sonoma area! read more

Two days ago I stopped by the Basque to buy a couple of beehives pastries. I couldn't believe how much they charge for one pastry, $8 a piece. Really!? This is just highway robbery. When I paid I asked the lady behind the counter how much were the other pastries and she told me that they were all at $8 a piece. Incredible! Even Bouchon Bakery does not charge this price. Also, they should put the price on the pastries in the case this way the customers could decide before ordering if they want to fork out $8 for a slice of cake. Ever since the original owner sold out the quality of the bread has changed to crap. The sourdough and baguettes have lost the airy consistency and flavor is bland. The ciabatta was awesome but now resembles a regular loaf (not flattened) and tastes like all the rest of the bread...bland! I vented to the owner in the past and was assured that nothing changed but it has. You guys had a winning bread and ruined it. Tourists may be fooled but not locals. This trip, I picked up a loaf of sourdough to bring home and slice of red velvet cake to share with hubby at the shop. It's the first time I've ordered a dessert and it was disappointing. The worst cafe I have ever been to in my ENTIRE life. Decided to have a nice picnic in the park. This was the first place we came across that offered sandwiches & a kids menu. I ordered the Prosciutto & Brie sandwich. I asked to substitute the horseradish aioli for another. The male cashier states there are no other Aoili's. I point out on their menus that other sandwiches some with a lemon & avocado aioli. He looks confused. I politely ask again if I can substitute. An older female employee says "we only have chipotle" so I policies decline. Employees start bickering amongst eachother. Makes it super Awkward standing there. We continue to order the Basque sando & a Kids grilled cheese for the babe. As we are waiting off to the side...groups of people start coming in. Ignoring the 3 person capacity posted at the door & at the register. Our order is called and we grab our bag and go. We set up our picnic area. Pull out our sandos, the BF has avocado aioli on his (which I thought they were out of) He takes a big bite and proceeds to let out a loud "OUUUUCCCHH" well his sourdough roll is rock hard. (Please see video) He ends up just eating it without the bread. My sandwich did not come on wheat bread as requested it was a rye with caraway.(gross) I too then eat my sandwich without the bread. Only thing they managed to get right was the kids grilled cheese. If you're gonna be open during the pandemic. Enforce your own rules. And this time of year I look forward to holiday treats like gingerbread. Yet such a high price for a gingerbread cookie squashed the holiday spirit for me today. The young man who works at the front register is the most sweetest, helpful, communicative, and attentive worker that I have encountered here. He's doing a great job, I'm glad he is still around. The pastries are a little different but they are still delicious. The coffee is made great by the owners and Joel. Every one else makes okay coffee. I hope they have the young man on the machine! This establishment adds a hefty fee to the bill if using plastic to pay. Apparently the cost of picking up cash, depositing it, counting it, and time wasted at the register isn't considered by the management. Dined in on July 7, 2020 This cute little cafe was just down the street from our Inn so we decided to check it out. The pastries looked delicious and the location was great since it's across the street from a park where you can take your treats to enjoy. I wish we had done that since we didn't feel too welcomed when we were there. The woman who took our order was so unfriendly and seemed annoyed to be at work. She was really short and dismissive when we asked her questions about certain items which made us feel rushed to order. Mind you, this was around 7AM and there were only 2 other parties in the cafe with us. We ended up ordering the prosciutto & brie sandwich, ham egg & cheese croissant and a cinnamon bun. Two stars because their food was good but their service was crap. I get that people have bad days at work but it really sucked that this employee was having one when we came in to visit. I am very familiar with Sonoma, did not know this place, and took a chance after looking at their website. Paaaleeeeze. For the cost it should not be self-serve! I ordered a bacon, arugula sandwich on super-thin dried out sourdough, my brother a bacon club. The sandwiches were probably less than a half an inch thick on dried-out bread with little or no condiments (this place IS A BAKERY as well!!). Bread was awful, sandwiches anemic, and food EXPENSIVE! Based on the bread I did not buy a loaf to support them. Really disappointing. Never again! Save your money for other deserving places around the square. read more

Got in right when they opened and tried tons of things- beehive cake, chocolate croissant, and chocolate chip muffin. All were to die for, hugely portioned, cheap, and fresh. The beehive cake is whats popular here, so as a tourist had to try it. It was awesome! Light, creamy, and sweet- it was perfect and they gave me a huge slice. Everything else was awesome. Food is barely average. Panini comes on rosemary bread smeared with too much oil. You can't customize the fillings because the panini are all pre-made. Filling is skimpy, veggies are limp, hardly enough sauce and very little flavor. Service is curt and servers YELL your name to pick up your food at the counter. This is a tough review to write because of the present circumstances regarding the pandemic. It's understandable that the tone wasn't as inviting as one would hope as the staff was trying their best to limit the number of people in the store to just six. This had to be repeated quite a bit as patrons wandered in and out--better outdoor signage would have helped? The few tables that are available outside were filled with people waiting to get in. I ordered a turkey sandwich to-go so I could eat it in the park. It consisted of roast breast of turkey, organic greens, tomato, mayo & mustard on a baby baguette for $8.50. It was tasty but I wished there was more turkey in the sandwich. The menu is extensive! There are many choices of baked goods, panini's, beverages etc. Catering is available. We had a small dog with us and we had the intention to eat outside, so we were greeted with ćyou can't bring your dog in here". We said we intended to eat outside. The place was set up to take orders inside. I ordered a garden burger, because I didn't see Impossible burder in the menu. I did get a garden burger with the Impossible flag stuck in it. It was not an Impossible burger. The burger itself was thin and nothing to brag about. The bun was toasted on both sides. All of the crust flaked right off. We asked for Ketchup and the person behind the counter gave us attitude because she couldn't find ketchup. The Caeser salad was unremarkable. I had a snack there yesterday morning and frankly will not be going back for a few reason the food has gone a little down hill, the pastry I had was suppose to be blueberries , cheese danish I think they just let the blueberries see the pastry and then left as very little blueberries and mostly all pastry so very dry. On top of that I was asked to tap which I did and find out I got charged an extra 1.03 for tapping no more tapping for me unless I am wearing tapping shoes.
