i've been buying lotus flour bread since the second or third week they arrived at the west seattle…read morefarmers market and i've never looked back. they have quality products and great flavor combinations! i also appreciate that you can often buy a whole or half loaf. sometimes i've seen some special cookies or other sweets and have been tempted based on how well the bread holds up and tastes. from talking with the owner, jolie, i know they use quality cairnspring flour and infuse everything they bake with a lot of passion for the process. one week i inadvertently ended up at home with a half loaf that i believed was mispackaged and not what i had wanted to buy but the next time i was there, i explained what i had had at home and what i thought i had bought. jolie's reaction was everything you want in a vendor: she was so intent on my being a happy, satisfied customer that she made sure i was getting the half loaf i wanted that day and told me not to pay. in general, this experience of trying out a vendor new to my local market and falling in love has resulted in bread purchases every week i go to the market which is essentially every sunday without fail. i highly recommend checking out lotus flour's many options!

I discovered Lotus Flour at the Farmers' Market when the cookies caught my eye-- the Brown Butter Sourdough Snickerdoodles. I thought that sourdough was an interesting base for a cookie, so I thought I would give it a try. These are amazing! Snickerdoodles aren't my favorite cookie, I'm a chocolate chip cookie kind of girl, but Lotus Flour definitely converted me. The best thing about these cookies is that they aren't too sweet-- you get the cinnamon, rather than the sweetness of the cookie base. The sourdough base is the perfect balance. And oh so chewy... The Lotus Flour owner/baker is incredibly nice! There were times when there were certain sourdough breads that weren't available that week, where she let me know it was alright to make a request. I like exploring, so I usually wait for the next market to see what surprises await. Favorites at our house: the Three Cheese, the Parmesan Herb, and the Sea Salt Focaccia. If you're going to get sourdough, get the best, and that is Lotus Flour. We're looking forward to the new Farmers' Market season, or finding Lotus Flour somewhere before then.

They have pretty typical Korean bakery fare and pricing seems to be just a bit higher than competitors, probably somewhere around a 10% premium compared to similar family owned bakeries. On my visit I got two pastries to try: Soboro Cream ($3.49) - Instead of a delicately crackly cookie crust, this bun has a much softer, almost moist topping, which may be due to them placing the bread in the packaging before being fully cooled off, allowing the bun to steam too much. There's a bunch of sweetened stabilized cream inside that's sweet and oily. The bread itself is kind of dry and crumbly, either not a typical milk bread recipe or perhaps it had been sitting on the shelf for too long. (2/5) Corn Mochi ($5.99) - This comes with six pieces. The corn mochi has a nice chewy tapioca flour base. There's black sesame sprinkled throughout giving a burst of nutty flavor. I expected to see whole corn kernels baked inside but I think they just use corn flour in the dough. It's way less sweet than the soboro. Texturewise, the inside is bouncy while the outside has a harder baked crust. (4/5) Overall Le Bon Patisserie is a pretty average Asian grocery store-paired bakery. It's more of a place to buy bread for convenience rather than anything special, but it does the job decently well.

I f***in' love milk bread... and while I don't use drugs, I imagine the euphoria I feel when I bite into milk bread is similar to a drug high. La Bon's milk bread is literally the worst white bread I have EVER tasted. It's worst than any grocery store brand and tastes like paper mache, wait, no.... I ate paper mache as a kid and this is far far worse. The pure and utter sadness I feel every time I put a piece of that shitty white cardboard into my mouth is worthy of a country western song. Brazillian food, especially, is quite rare in this area, so we decided to drop by on a weekday afternoon to try them out. unfortunately they were out of most of the Brazillian pastries, but we ended up getting 3 different items. Concha ($1.20) - This concha has a distinctively yellow colored interior. It's really pillowy and soft yet very rich like brioche. Usually I find conchas to be much drier and much less rich. The crust on top is crumbly and sweet. The bottom base is really the standout here. (4/5) Empanadas Crema ($2.49) - This is a denser bread that tastes like a cracker, kind of like a saltine. It's flour and water, unenriched, but not dry. The inside is filled with stabilized cream. It's not too sweet. (3/5) Pao Milho, Pan de Elote ($3.50) - This is dense and heavy, wet with tons of corn, whole kernels and pieces embedded throughout. It has a strong corn flavor. Double checked...Dairy free means no milk, cream, yogurt, butter etc. so I look for labels that says DV, V. Everything is automatically certified gluten free and there is no worry on cross contamination. They don't use run of the mill commercial grade high gluten flour the website tells all. There's also paleo, keto options. As someone who hasn't been eating butter based pastries due to doctor's orders, this bakery is like finding gold. Our favorite after 2 visits are their vegan dairy free sea salt chocolate chunk cookie, their classic GF big chocolate chip cookie, vegan dairy free banana macadamia nut muffin, and my absolute favorite is their dairy free vegan sweet strawberry scone (with rhubarb, flax and coconut). I typically find scones to be bland and dry. Not these! I enjoyed these so much they were so moist and delicious but what I love most is the chewy bits on the edge. My hubby is a chocolate fiend but he usually get sluggish and sick to his stomach after inhaling a large chocolate pastry from other bakery. He ate their large size classic chocolate chip cookie and it didn't bother him. Tasted amazing too! Their sourdough is one of a kind. It's piping hot and available on a daily basis while supplies last. Nobody offers gluten free artisan sourdough fresh out of the oven on a walk in basis. It stayed hot for hours after I brought it home because it was such a dense dough. When I think about how much more time and work went into these special loaves (not mass produced) and loaded with nutrition, the $23.50 is worth it! The sourdough is super moist if you don't toast it there's almost a slight tacky feel to it. Once toasted, it is the best artisan toast eating experience. For the price, I made sure we wash our hands and did all the suggested prep needed. My only critique would be transparency on pricing in store and on website. It was mildly shocking when the register total was in the $80 range after 2 sourdough loaves and 6 pastries before tip. After eating it, we realized it's actually worth every penny. Recently, maybe over the last two years, have noticed the bread cubes sold around thanksgiving by PCC have been rancid, so bad smelling. I was able to return them but super inconvenient. More recently this last week purchased two "pumpkin" pies. Not really pumpkin, more like ginger snap cookie flavor which is okay but there is something in it that gave me stomachs cramps. I tested it out and yep, it's the pie. Unclear what's in it as all the ingredients I've had before. Sadly I will not be buying yet another item. I really want to support a local biz but the product isn't what it used to be. Miss her chocolate cake with strawberries and the lemon pound cakes!
