What a cute place! The dimness of the room with the low light really bump up the atmosphere. Despite not being a fan of gin, I really wanted to check out this place for the vibes and it definitely delivered. The apples a day and smores old fashioned were both hits at the table. We made reservations for pre dinner plans for 2 people for an early saturday evening - by wednesday evening we knew we had two more people joining and we tried to call the place but unfortunately no answer from the staff but when we got there, the staff was more than accomodating to the situation, they let us add the two people but had to cut down the time we were alotted which we were okay with as long as our other friends got to join us. The hushed lighting & throwback decor partnered with a metallic gold bathtub in the center of the room (great photo opp) provided a true speakeasy vibe that was felt immediately upon stepping through the unassuming entrance. Overall Batub Gin is a worthwhile speakeasy experience that I'd recommend trying! The ambience and decorations are top notch, including the menus that are fashioned as prohibition-era newspapers. One of the misses did not agree with our collective palates, but thankfully they were amenable to swapping it out to something else more to our liking. And thus evolved "bathtub gin," which refers to what came about as a result of Prohibition, the 18th Amendment, and the Volstead Act, and it was literally made in tubs using cheap grain alcohol and fruit, steeping for hours or days. I imagine it didn't get very good Yelp reviews. Even as a non-drinker, I enjoyed my time here. There's a secret door inside the storefront coffee shop. Before you go in, you can check your stuff and hang until it thins out inside. I hung out by the bar and it was crowded, so I was elbow-to-elbow with strangers. I did try some specialty gin, and thought it was so strong. The drinks and cocktails here are very pricey, so save this speakeasy for your special occasions and favorable dates. We came here before a show at the Atlantic Theater. There was a little confusion because I mentioned we needed to leave early and the waiter said our show started an hour later! For Bathroom Gin, once you find the location, you'll first think you're about to walk in a mini café with a cute coatrack on the side. I've known about this little gem for at least eight years or so now. This was my first burlesque show years ago. I have since came back numerous times for just drinks. They have an extensive drink list and hold so many types of gin it's crazy. I decided to bring my parents to the city while visiting for the burlesque show. Reserved the "Mafia" table for the burlesque show. The manager Mark gave my parents and I some of the best service. He and his staff that were helping that night were all extremely attentive and accommodating. Lonn was our server and he was a walking smile. I must say I give this place its props for the staying power in Chelsea because its not easy to stick around with rising rental costs and increased competition. I usually resort to Bathub Gin as an after dinner pitstop. It can be a great place to lounge if you can find a seat. The place is usually packed - at least when I have visited, so just expect to stand most of the time and its loud so I hardly ever pay attention to the music is just kind of blends into the background. My friend an I had been on a long road trip and now we were killing time before the ladies outing to the Whitney. You enter through the Stone Street Coffee Company and the hostess is in the tiny space and then she lets you through the secret wall entrance. The place had a ton of reservations for the burlesque brunch. It was an absolute secret life back there. No one grabbing coffee would have known of it's existence. Sebastian was working and it was his birthday and his bar back was late. And yet he entertained us and created off the menu cocktails for us. The cocktails were works of art. The hairs on my arm stood up at the sight of an egg white and shaved cinnamon. A cocktail that takes so much time to assemble is worth every penny in my book. My friend and I spotted the make your own s'mores. It's $6 a person which is a total steal. They bring out a miniature fire pit to roast your marshmallows. I like my marshmallows to be on fire. We each get two sandwiches. I loved the interactive part of the dessert. And of course the dessert itself took me back to being a wee one and enjoying the camping life. When our other friends arrived it got insanely busy. One friend ordered marshmallows a la crate. I don't recommend this. It was only $1.50 cheaper than the fun assembly s'mores. I always stick to what I see. But I appreciate that Sebastian was able to make it happen. We caught a little bit of the burlesque. There is no photography or video allowed. Which makes a lot of sense to me. But you can also not use the restroom while the show is happening. So I suggest you hit that up before clothes becomes sparse. Server only gave 1 menu, and when i asked for 1 more menu, she said they only have 4 menu since people are stealing their menus. Haaa??? Love the novelty of it being hidden behind the coffee counter. My friend that was visiting was completely confused about the location, so it was hidden quite well. I had the wakey juice joe, which was a matcha gin cold brew. Honestly, this drink was a miss for me cause it was so bitter.
