Through the resourceful wisdom of a friend, I had the battery replaced in my iPhone 6 by the guys at Batteries Plus Bulbs in Thousand Oaks for less than $70. You can make an appointment by phone, but it was pretty quiet on the Sunday when we walked in. He told us it would take about an hour; we went to lunch, came back, and done. Apple simply would have diagnosed the problem and sent me back to Verizon; both would have suggested a new phone upgrade for more or at best, a refurbished iPhone that would have entailed a night of updates,endlessly entering my Apple Password in a kind of excruciatingly hip, cutesy, sisyphean hell. All of my apps and contacts are intact. One of the guys said Verizon might have just sent me to them. The batteries wear out; I get it. These guys can put a new one in. They were, by the way, utterly charming and funny to two *very* chatty women, including a tall one with a deep voice. One and done. My phone works and my stress level has dropped to zero. That giant phone will have to wait until I have $750 to blow. read more

Worst customer service ever! Brought my re-chargeable trimmer to replace the battery. Gary opened the trimmer and said "yes, it's doable. We can replace the batteries. I'll do it first thing tomorrow morning.". They charged me $19.35 when I dropped off the trimmer. Next day, I waited until early afternoon for them to call me. I finally called them and was told they haven't worked on the trimmer yet and will have it ready by the evening. Gary called me later in the afternoon and said the trimmer was ready. He had trouble closing the case, so there is a small gap, but it works fine. He also said the green charging light had burnt out, which was working when I dropped off the trimmer, but assured me he had charged the trimmer twice and it worked fine. I said I was OK as long as the trimmer worked. I went to pick up the trimmer in the evening. When I turned it on, it ran for 5 seconds and died! Gary wasn't there. There was a lady (using the term loosely), who said "Oh we couldn't get it to work". I told her about my conversation with Gary, then asked for a refund, which she promptly she refused. I reminded her that Gary had told me they had a 6 month guarantee and he had told me that the trimmer was working perfectly, so I need a refund. She still refused and became very rude, saying they can't refund labor. So I asked what was the purpose of the guarantee, and she called Gary on the phone to talk to him. I told her if she won't give me a refund, then I will call American Express and get my money back since Amex has a satisfaction guarantee for such transactions. She still refused, and said they have to remove the new batteries, and I said that was fine by me as long as they can put my old batteries back in, and fix the trimmer's charging light that they had broken. She said they had thrown out my batteries. She asked one of the young technicians to pen the trimmer to remove the batteries, and the technician said he didn't now how! Finally, she gave up and gave me a refund after Gary told her to on the phone, huffing and puffing and making rude remarks the whole time. For a business that is built on customer service, they sure know how to lose customers. I am seriously thinking of taking them to small claims court since they damaged my $50 trimmer beyond repair. I used to be able to use it by plugging it into the charger, but now it doesn't work at all. I had to spend $64 to buy another trimmer. What a waste of time! Ohe yeah, while I was there, they were giving advice to another customer who had problems with his smart phone battery, saying he shouldn't leave the phone on the charger all night, because it damages the battery! Really? I am an electronics engineer, so I know BS when I hear it. If a rechargeable battery is damaged by leaving it on charge all night, then you need to replace your phone! read more

A year later and a different battery need. I had an old railroad scanner with a Ni-Cad battery pack and non-standard connector that had died and corroded. Gary fabricated a new one identical to what I had while I waited and I was out the door in about 15 minutes for about $15. How in the world can one top that?! Been coming here for a few years now and always have received great customer service. Recently I came in to purchase a bulb for a lighted magnifier (after two sets of new batteries didn't work). Long story short, instead of just selling me the bulb I requested, staff took a look at my magnifier, discovered that there was some corrosion on the old battery terminal. They scraped off and blew out the corrosive material. Turns out I didn't need a bulb at all and everything worked just fine. NOW THAT IS SOME FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE! I have done business with this store for many many years, but never again!!! In the past, I purchased a car battery from Gary (I believe he is the owner). He even installed it at no charge. I have been getting all of my watch batteries there for years at a cost of $2.99, and again, Gary put them in for me at no charge. Last year I purchased a battery back up from Gary. This is just a small amount of item I have purchased there. Two weeks ago, I bought a cheap $6.99 battery at Big Lots, and took it to them for a battery. I handed it to a young man the behind the counter and told him I need a battery for this watch (there was a number on it for him to read). I noticed "Gary" helping a young lady who was getting a battery for her car key. She tried to open it, and Gary said, "Here, I will do that for you". While the young man was getting my battery, I noticed that Gary had replaced one for the other lady. The man put mine in my watch, and then charged me a total of $8.59. Outrageous price for a cheap watch. He said that that was for the installation! It took him about 45 seconds to put it in. Wow! I never asked him to put it in and I was NOT asked if I wanted him to put it in, NOR told there would be a charge to "install". I very definitely would not have paid that for a watch battery!! When I told them that I was never charged when Gary put it in, the young many asked the what people on here refer to as the rude older lady, and she asked Gary if he has put them in before without a charge, and he stood there and lied and said there was always a charge. When I reminded him of putting in my car battery at no charge, he lied and said that would not have happened. By the way, the "rude lady" is his wife and maybe he had to lie in front of her. She is a bit scary (not nice at all). I have bought all my batteries here since they opened years and years ago, but never again. I will not go back to a shop where they lie to your face!! That is even worse than the overcharge! Btw, even a jeweler doesn't charge "installation" if you buy the battery from them. TO GARY After seeing all of the one star ratings, and reading what so many people are say about your wife, you should not have her in the store. She is rude, and darn right mean. ****OLDER LADY WAS RUDE TO MY 6 YEAR OLD SON*** I was in the store today to purchase a new battery for my R.V. The guys in there, as usual, were helpful and kind, and this review would have been 5 stars if not for the "Older lady in the back" . I feel better reading other past reviews and knowing that I'm not the only one who has had a negative experience at this establishment because of this woman. I came in with my 6 year old son, who is a typical boy of his age ,but usually is well behaved. While I was making my transaction, the lady came out from the back and was being very snooty with her coworkers, talking down to them rudely with a nasty tone. I felt bad for this poor kid who has to put up with that treatment for paycheck that I'm sure is not worth it. In the midst of my transaction, my son grabbed one of the flashlights off the counter, and began to play with it. Innocently he flicked the button on and off a few times and shined it around the shop. The lady stomped out from behind the counter, aggressively ripped the flashlight from my son's hand and yelled at him, pointing in his face, that "THE FLASHLIGHTS ARE NOT TOYS!". Then she slammed the flashlight back into its display case and went back to the back room. I was so very shocked this lady had the nerve to talk to a child, who she didn't even know, in such an dominating ,harsh tone. I look up at the guy ringing me up, he also had a look of shock on his face, under his breath he apologized for her, and added that it would have been much more prudent to kindly ask me,to ask my child to stop playing with the flashlight. I agreed , finished my transaction, walked out the door and headed for my car. Walking to my car , I looked at my son and he had his head down and a tear in his eye.I started thinking about the whole scinerio that had just transpired, and I started to get mad. By the time I reached my car, I was furious. I turned around , marched back in there and asked to speak with the lady. I began to yell at her, with all her coworkers and a few customers in the store . I told her that " I just spent $250.00 in your store and if my son had broken your flashlight I would have paid for that , and you don't talk to someone else kid like that!" I called her a "B" stormed out and kicked there door closed as I left. Not only will I never go back to this location, but I will tell all my fellow Thousand Oaks family, coworkers, and friends to look else where for there battery and bulbs. I went in had a few batterie needs a dead heart rate monitor, car batterie test and an old flash light I liked and needed new batteries. I a lady came up to me and found my heart rate monitor batterie right away. With my flash light I had thrown the batteries away long time ago and don't know what they were. She said she could sell me a couple of batteries but if the didn't work they were not refundable. They had non that I could test. For my car batterie I needed it tested, there is a big sign out front saying free car batterie testing. When I asked for it she said they were to busy. There was one other person in there that was being helped by some one else. I think she just didn't want to do it.
