Well having lived in Germany as kid, and having visited Austria and Germany as an adult I truly appreciate authentic German and Bavarian style food. I love schnitzel, spaetzle, red cabbage, bockwurst, sauerkraut and true german potato salad! So as we made our annual trip to Apple Hill was surprised and very excited to come across this place that from the outside had the look of an authentic Bavarian establishment. As we pulled into the parking lot I could hear the sounds of an Octoberfest oompah band being played over the speakers, which got me more excited that this might be good. So as my family wondered thru the handful of outdoor vendor booths I peeked inside to look at thier menu. What really sold me that I had to try this place is when l heard the woman behind the counter speaking to another family, as it was quite clear based on her accent she was from Germany or possibly Austria! Bingo this place had the look, sound and feel of an authentic German establishment! I then had to convince the family we had to eat here and they would like it! This was not easy as they were skeptical and obviously do not share my love of German food. They have also gotten smart and knew to ask what does Yelp say. However due to my excitement I did not follow my own golden rule and check Yelp, and just told them trust me it will be good! So we order the schnitzel plate that comes with german potato salad and apple strudel, a bratwurst and a kids hot dog. The 1st sign of trouble was our order arrived within minutes of us sitting down. I quickly realized everything including the schnitzel was probably cooked in the morning, had been sitting and was then quickly warmed once we ordered. The 2nd sign was the meager portion of german potato salad that was served on the paper plate. Now I know I can be stubborn and so even with these signs as the family began to question my prediction that it would be good, I still refused to budge and reiterated they needed to be open minded and try it. Well boy did those words come back to haunt me! The schnitzel was dry and lacked any flavor. It tasted like it had been sitting for awhile before it was reheated, which clearly it was! The potato salad was warm but that is were all similarities with authentic german potato salad ended. The bratwurst looked and tasted like it was bulk purchased on sale from a small wholesale restaurant food supplier. The hotdog was clearly no better. Anytime a 7 year old takes two bites of a hotdog, then says I am full and do not want anymore is a sign! So knowing the food was 1 star my reason for giving this place a 2 star rating is the woman behind the counter was pleasant and the lady who brought our food out was very nice, and so am giving them a bump for thier customer service. read more

I was searching for a quaint little place to have lunch during a weekend outing to apple hill with the family and stumbled upon this place on yelp. To my surprise, there were two entries for this place... One under "Bavarian Hills" and another under "Bavarian Hills Orchard" with fairly conflicting reviews. Rest assured, they both refer to the same place. We came the weekend after labor day, so the place was not that busy and were initially greeted by a pleasant young girl with whom we placed our orders... My wife, a vegetarian, ordered the lasagna (made with veggies and a creamy bechamel sauce) and included a green leaf salad. My father ordered the chicken schnitzel, and my brother, mother and I ordered the German Beef Bratwurst. Total came to something a little over $59. YIKES!!!! Since no one in my family eats pork, we were assured that it would be ok to substitute the potato salad with a green leaf salad with dressing for all the dishes. Immediately after placing our orders, we were met with a thud by a grumpy old German lady behind the counter. Another yelper described her as being "disheveled" and as if she had just rolled out of bed (pretty spot on). In an attempt to ease the tension, I began speaking a little German with her to no avail (I spent a large part of my childhood in Germany and am fluent and familiar with the food). She began giving us "shit" for wanting to substitute the potato salad. She informed me that the potato salad only had a little bit of bacon in it and that I could simply "wipe it away." I don't think she understood my point about not eating bacon. I assured her that if it was a problem to substitute, then she could simply leave the potato salad on the plates. She begrudgingly told me that she would give us the green leaf salad. As if this bizarre encounter wasn't a disappointment, the food was an absolute CATASTROPHE. First of all, the salad, which she made such a huge deal about was literally 3 shreds of store bought pre-washed generic iceberg lettuce and was covered in a Caesar dressing (not vegetarian since it contains anchovies). The sausages were disgusting. The schnitzel was thin, dry and overcooked. The complimentary dessert, the strudel, tasted like paper. Everything was served on cheap styrofoam. Oh PLEASE NO! I know that the quaintly painted exterior and fun Matterhorn style music may be enticing, but it would be better for you to go hungry than to eat here. We stopped by this past November, excited to try some German food for lunch after a lovely morning exploring our favorite sites at Apple Hill. Growing up Polish with many German family members, I've learned to love good Eastern European food. It isn't my favorite, but always reminds me of my childhood. I've been to Apple Hill many times, but have never tried this place. We tried the chicken schnitzel, polish hot dog, sauerkraut, potato salad, and some sort of apple pastry. The chicken was tough (hard to accomplish since the meat had been pounded to maybe the thickness of 1/4 of an inch) and tasted like it had been dipped and cooked in Shake-N-Bake and then salted again, the potato salad had NO flavor, the sauerkraut had no crunch at all and the most odd sweet/sour/bland flavor--almost like pre-vomit spit-up, and had a mystery meat mixed into it that also had no flavor. The polish sausage was the most disappointing. I asked the lady at the register if they made their own sausage (oh silly naive me)...she looked at me for a second and then said yes. And I believed her. UGH! If she's telling the truth, they need their food permit taken away promptly. If not, wow..to lie to a customer about food is beyond inexcusable. I wouldn't have wanted to take credit for that food--low quality cat food smells better than this tasted..and almost seems to have the same texture. What food didn't taste boiled, tasted as if it had been microwaved. And the apple dessert..I don't know how, but they managed to remove the flavor of the apples from the half-baked (yes--the dough surrounding it was actually partly raw..or maybe had been sitting for too long in some sort of liquid to make it seem raw) dessert actually had less flavor than the potato salad. I know some people have criticized others who complained about the dessert not being sweet. That wasn't it. I make apple pies all the time with little to no sugar as apples rarely need extra sweetening. This actually was devoid of flavor. Again--in one of the prime apple locations in the state, this is also inexcusable. The service also was also strange. While a lady took our order before disappearing into a back room, we shortly thereafter saw her hanging out at a picnic table with a bunch of other ladies who appeared to be crafting jewelry. A younger man later brought us our food...but it seemed to take an incredibly long time for food that was neither fresh nor anything other than microwaved/steamed. We were only able to stomach a bite or two of each item before tossing everything in the trash. I hate wasting food, but I had already begun to feel on the verge of vomiting before we left our table. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. i always enjoy eating here whenever i'm in apple hill. this place is so cute and celebrates some pretty darn good home cooked german and american food. like many of the other farm in apple hill they also sell fresh and frozen apple pies and pastries to take home. on weekends and holidays they have homemade crafts and during octoberfest they offer daily specials and live music. when it comes down to the eats i highly recommend the shnitzel. the meat is breaded and crisp on the outside yet tender and juicy on the inside. all of the sides taste so good you really can't go wrong with this place. read more

Everyday is Groundhog's Day at Bavarian Hills... Judging by the review from 11 months ago. A stop at Bavarian Hills is sure to ruin your Apple Hill trip. Walmart hotdogs are a betters value than the bratwurst here and the grumpy service is a disgrace to all of Germany. Just like the previous Yelper, the onion bin was empty, while the relish was full. This place is a little bit "off the beaten path" for me, as I usually just stick to the stuff on Carson Road. It is located in a cute "Bavarian" looking building with cheesy German music playing. The lady who was running the place when we went in was friendly and we happened to be the only people patronizing the place. They had a very simple selection. Still, the brockwurst and schnitzle were pretty decent. She double checked I actually wanted the brockwurst, as I guess most people don't ask for that one. I also ordered a side of cooked sauerkraut which with a little mustard went great on the sausage in a hot dog bun. And while they didn't have what I really wanted (sauerbraten, etc.), the food was ok and a nice change. Peeked next door, and with all the other places in Apple Hill, they have a selection of crafts for sale in little stands. Made the end of the season trek to Apple Hill. Was looking forward to Authentic German food. The exterior is somewhat reminiscent of a traditional German home. There were a two vendors posted outside, one with religious relics, the other with country crafts. The Deli was SADLY DISAPPOINTING!! The room was dark (1/2 the room had no lighting) and cold. Two old bakery displays offerred up Apple pies, streudel and pretzels that appeared as though they had been sitting for days. The hostess, a nice lady with a German accent, was disheveled and dressed as thought she had just rolled out of bed. The service was confusing, you could order from 5 saran wrapped specials displayed on the counter top. Snitzel, sheppard pie, vegetarian lazagne, and sausages with a choice of potato salad or bread were far from appetizing. I inquired about the pretzel, nope not homemade the hostess stated "that's too much work!" Patrons were eating off of styrofoam plates, the food was cold and tatsteless. Doubltful that the owners prepare the food fresh, most likele store bought. Who adverstises German food service and finds it too much work to make authentic food? However we were all very disappointed, the food was not good and very small portions. We will not be returning. They were nice however to give our dog water. Our meals were served on stale hot dog buns, and my daughter's "2 slices" was actually 1 average sized slice, cut in 2. They were ridiculously small pieces and served with 3 tiny apple slices. I think it would behoove the owner to take the word "cuisine" off the signage and advertisements. I truly don't know why we didn't turn around and leave once we saw the inside or when the tray of daily offerings was pushed in front of us. I think I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt because of childhood memories of driving past the little haus each trip to Apple Hill as a kid. It was sad. Really sad. I hope the owner reads the yelp reports because I am only writing this in hopes that she will take the reviews to heart and make some badly needed improvements. Being of German decent I REALLY want to like the place (and go there every year to give it another chance), but as other reviewers mentioned the place needs some help. German food, even German fast food (which is served here) can be really excellent. Sadly I feel that the cooking is drab, uninspired and pretty tasteless. The whole feeling I get about everything from the food to the decor is that it is tired and in need of some refreshing. The food isn't bad, but it could be much better. I like the simple menu but if you are only serving a few items they need to be freshly prepared and made with fresh ingredients. Sausages taste like they have been warmed up a few too many times. The place could also be decorated much nicer. It looks too much like a converted cafeteria rather than a cozy German restaurant. I think with just a few improvements to decor and food quality this little gem could be a great success. The owner and staff are grumpy and seem worn out. Probably from years of doing the same thing day in and day out. If they put a little spring in their step, got excited about some new recipes or ways of presentation, and refreshed the decor, they would feel better and attract happy customers wanting to spend their money at this potentially charming destination. They ran out of buns & substituted for old slices of wheat bread, sourcraut for potato salad & chips for something else. The last time I was there the sign was open, I came with a few babies and when we finally got them out, and got inside, the man said they were closed. I haven't been back since. We drove over from Grass Valley expecting a lovely Friday afternoon, and lunch. The afternoon & scenery was fine. Crowds at a number of the spots seemed like too much to manage so we went on, thinking that a Bavarian spot would be great. We arrived about 3pm. There were no crowds, good. We ordered from their short menu - veal bratwurst, beef bockwurst, potato salad, apple strudel, cider. The food was horrible. A stryofoam plate had been placed in a microwave for no more than 30 seconds, everything together. Nothing was even warm. The sausages were nasty, the buns soft because of the microwave, the potato salad dry and tasteless, and worst of all, the strudel just library paste and glue - really shocking. The condiment container for onions was empty, the one for relish full. One mustard bottle was empty. The cider was fine, and the canned music okay. We ate three bites and dumped the rest.
