We went with a group and were genuinely excited after looking over the menu, which sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to our expectations. The French onion soup was excellent and was the highlight of the meal. However, things went downhill from there. We ordered steaks and chicken francese. Two of the steaks came out cooked incorrectly, and when we brought it to their attention, the owner came over and was visibly upset that we had sent them back. One person in our group said not to worry about remaking his steak, but the owner insisted, and we had to repeat ourselves multiple times before he finally backed off. His attitude throughout the interaction was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Flavor-wise, all of the steaks were extremely disappointing. They were completely unseasoned and lacked any flavor. For the price, this was especially frustrating--I honestly could have made a better steak at home. The chicken francese was also not what was expected at all. It looked more like a scampi dish, included peas, and tasted nothing like traditional francese. After checking with our very pleasant waitress, she confirmed that this was how the dish was prepared. While our waitress was extremely kind and attentive, the owner's behavior and the overall quality of the food left a lot to be desired. I would not recommend this place. They open at 5 and apparently all the locals with a drinking issue know and show up for the "good drinks" ! There was a line of AARP folks needing some liquid courage. Me, I came for food. The burger was delicious and cooked perfectly The fries were also hot and tasty This place has been around for a bazillion years so go read up. If you stay north of the dinner menu, you can have a nice evening out without breaking the budget, go south and it's pricey! But drink some of those famous drinks and you won't care about the prices. I've been here several times now, and I'd say the food is just ok, not great. A large crowd is typically dining at the bar, and there are lots of tables in the back room. What a Pleasant Surprise after reading so many mixed reviews! The quality of Filet Mignon was top notch and cooked perfectly Pittsburgh rare I ordered. The bread was outstanding. Salad was fresh mixed greens, crisp veggies added. The mashed potatoes were creamy with bits of potato skin and vegetable medley were cooked perfectly...green beans with a diced Carrots and peppers. My wife and I have lived on Amelia Island for over a year, so we decided to try Baxter's on a Monday night and eat at the bar. The bar staff was great, the drinks were great, and we got good service! The crab cakes were mostly filler and very little crab. The sauce on top just made them feel heavy. Not good. The French Onion soup said, "best on the island" on the menu. I was not good. The broth was flavorless, and the onions did not appear to have been cooked in it for more than a few minutes. The bread and cheese were good, but overall the soup was not good. The open-faced ribeye sandwich was OK. The stead was cooked to my liking, but it was relatively plain. Anyway, Baxter's seems to be packed on the weekend so they obviously serve some good food, but we couldn't find any of it when we went there! read more

Meh . . It's just average. Not Great, Not terrible. I was a little surprised when I was able to get a 7:00 reservation during the insanity that IS the Amelia Island Concourse recently. Most of the great, good and even the just ok restaurants are packed due to the enormous influx of people this weekend. The building looks pretty decent from the outside and displays a sign saying the Best steaks in the area. Once you get inside it starts to drop off. It's a bit run down looking and the bar looks like something from a 1970's sitcom. It's casual to the point of being rough. Regarding the food, Fresh bread - really good Onion soup - ok but somewhat bland Caesar salad - pretty good Baked potato - dried out Green beans - overcooked Steak - decent They do have a full bar but the craft beer options are quite limited and a brief look at the wine list was underwhelming. Normally I would go into more detail regarding the food but my brief description tells you all you need to know. I was confused by the wide variance in reviews but I find that in the end, the 3 star rating is pretty much right where it should be. read more

The whole experience was pretty weird. We had reservations and were seated immediately. This is pretty uncommon on Amelia Island but since this was a bit of an upscale place we figured they just do a better job of planning. After about 10 minutes our server came to the table, dropped off water and took our drink orders. My wife ordered a margarita and the server looked shocked saying" I am not sure we have a blender". My wife told her it could be on the rocks and the server was really puzzled, she did get a frozen margarita. When she returned with our drinks she told us the specials, which come with specific sides, like all the meals there. Vegetable medley was the side for the night. My wife asked what was in it and when she was told there were bell peppers my wife explained she has a severe allergy and were there any other options. The servers response was " well we cant take them out, we can give you something else for an upcharge". The upcharge did not bother me, the attitude did. She proceeded to walk away and I had to stop her to order an appetizer. We were also ready to order but she didn't ask. The calamari was excellent so things were looking up. Probably the only reason for the 2 star rating was the calamari. With no marinara or other sauce added it was very good, seasoned better than most, the marinara was just a compliment. Our steaks arrived. I had a Blue cheese NY strip ordered medium rare with vegetable medley and baked potato. My steak was a strange color, darker than normal, I thought maybe it was just over cooked. It was in fact medium rare, just a funny color. There was no seasoning on the steak at all besides the blue cheese. The potato was undercooked and everything on my plate was just luke warm. My wife ordered a ribeye and got the same experience including an unseasoned steak. The serer never came back to check on us until we had finished eating. No how is your food? Can I refill your drinks? Nothing. They call themselves the best steak in town. It was terrible in my opinion and the service was even worse. We spent over $100 on this meal and really hoped for a nice experience. We will not be back. read more

Initial thoughts from walking in is that it had a great look on the exterior and the interior isn't great. Not super appealing to the eye though and definitely an older age type of place. Wasn't hard to get a reservation but for a Friday night the resturant was only filled about halfway. Great service from our waitress. Super nice and a heart of gold. Food took forever to get out though which is kind of disappointing because our waitress said the chef was backed up (which again the place wasn't even close to fully filled). When it came to the food, my group got a variety of dishes that included the steaks, teriyaki stir fry, and seafood options. I also got the French onion soup (which was said that it was the best in town) and Baxter's famous crab cakes. French Onion soup was VERY disappointing. Soup was bland and watery and the onions tasted as if they were just boiled in water with no other flavors added. Crab cakes were alright, great sauce but had a lot of shells in it. Had no fresh grouper so they offered me frozen grouper instead which was disappointing. Instead I went with the seafood linguini which was great. Steaks lived up to the best in town. Teriyaki stir fry was not good for everyone at the table though. Definitely not something I would suggest. Biggest thing for me was I paid in cash and everyone else paid in card. Everyone else received their checks after I did not. Although it was a very minimal amount I should be given back when my bill was $63.20 and I gave my waitress $65.00 so it was only $1.80 I should have been given back but it more the principle of it. Well, I hate to speak poorly of a local favorite, but I couldn't be more disappointed. We dressed up for the "best steaks on Amelia Island". The family history had our attention too, especially the part about starting their business on grandma's soup. So we dove into the onion soup. Awful!!! Truly the worst I have ever had. Next the bread. It was average, but the butter was warm, so high points for that. Then we had their version of a garlic butter sizzling NY Strip. It was ordinary, not marinated or aged, but straight from the butcher to the table, or so it seems. It wasn't the worst that I have had, but more inline with TGI Fridays or Chili's. Not steakhouse quality at all. Lastly was the baked potato ordered loaded. It was small, but well cooked. However, loaded apparently means something different here. It was sprinkled with butter, bacon bits and chives. Sprinkled might be an overstatement. Lastly was the Guinness on tap - my favorite beer. It was days away from skunked. I drank it, but considered sending it back. My wife's house red was a bargain at $7. The biggest plus is the staff. They are authentically nice and helpful. I would hire the ones I met, but I didn't meet the chef nor would I hire him/her. Bummer. I really wanted to love this place and become a regular. read more

My wife and I visited Baxters for the 1st time this evening. While it is not uncommon for most steakhouses to claim they are the "Best in Town", we wanted to see if this was the case at Baxter's. My wife ordered the chicken franchise(?) and I ordered the Ribeye steak. Now, I have a self-proclaimed steak connoisseur and have eaten several steaks in the Yulee and Fernandina Beach. I asked for my steak as rare. So, the verdict? UNBELIEVABLE! Hands down the BEST ribeye I've had in the area! The steak was cooked to perfection, was seasoned perfectly and was extremely tender! The naked potato and mixed vegetables were very good also. My wife was also extremely impressed with her dish too! My wife tried a bite of my steak and even she couldn't believe how fantastic it was! Following the main course we ordered the key lime pie. It was also fantastic! Lastly, and a very important point to mention, our waitress (Caitlin) was beyond AWESOME and a ROCKSTAR! She never tried to rush us or make us feel like we were just some random couple she was serving. Actually, Caitlin spent a good bit of time taking the time to talk with us about all kinds of things and was an absolute JOY to meet! My wife actually said to me at one point when she walked away "She is so cute and reminds me of myself at that age" and said she is really sweet! Listen folks, if you want a great meal and specifically an awesome ribeye, GO TO BAXTER'S! Just make sure you ask for Caitlin to be your server.....you will not regret it! One of the best steaks on the island. Can't go wrong here. Atmosphere in not much to look at but clean and good food.

Baxter's Steak House was just down the street from an AirBNB that I was staying at while visiting Fenandina Beach as a snowbird for the first time. I grabbed some small meals as take out orders a few times, but what I liked the most about Baxter's was the bar in the back of the restaurant. The bar is small and locals visit it at night. This is by no means a big, hopping night club, but it is indeed similar to "Cheers". If you're looking to grab a drink at night on the southern end of Amelia Island, this is the place to go. The staff is friendly and there is draft beer and a fairly wide variety of liquor in stock. Mike and Kaye are the bartenders here and both are very friendly and funny. If I never make it back here, I hope that Chris and Chrissy are having a great time, laughing, smiling and having a drink! read more

Amazing the number of negative comments? We were there on the night of the Shrimp Festival Parade and it was pretty crowded. Pretty good crowd, got a seat and it was about 8pm no problem. Service was spot on and prompt and they were still seating customers. Party of four and all ordered steaks and Caesar salads. Drink order was promptly taking and delivered. Salads came and reminded all of us of the days when restaurants made it table side, excellent. Steaks came out and Filet rare was great and juice, well seasoned and tender. Mediums had great flavor but not as tender. Overall, definitely would return and have the same. And very good value. read more

To be fair, we ordered take out, which doesn't always accurately portray the quality of a restaurant. My daughter and I had cheeseburgers, which were just fine. Good, actually. My husband ordered the ribs and these were so so. I went inside to pick up my order and was able to look around a bit. It looks cozy and comfortable. This is our favorite place to go on Amelia Island. The food is incredible. My husband and I have had chicken kabobs, chicken quesadillas, burger, chicken francaise, Philly cheese steak. Omg. All of it was amazing. Also the sweet potato fries. We sat at the bar and had fabulous service from both Cameron and Barbi. Great pours. And the owner Michelle thanked us by name for our visits. Shame shame on this restaurant for not having staff wear face coverings. We only stayed because the restaurant was mostly empty, otherwise we would have left immediately. Seriously folks, why oh why can't you understand that this is a health safety initiative and not a public statement about personal freedoms. If your choices affect innocent people's lives, than it is no longer about an individual's rights. Do what you want in your personal circle, but don't take risks with customers. This establishment has been around for awhile. The atmosphere was quirky, with no distinguishing personality. The hot bread arrived quickly but was an unremarkable doughy blob. No amounts of butter could save it. Caesar salads were decent, although it would have been nice to have a bigger punch of garlic and anchovies. I opted for a shrimp dish that was offered over rice but asked if the kitchen could put it over linguine. They never " officially" answered my request but they did honor it. My partner ordered a surf and turf, a mini filet with a broiled lobster tail and baked potato. The pasta entree definitely had some redeeming qualities, but suffered once again from a restaurant's desire to drown the noodles in the sauce rather than have it gently coat the linguine. The shrimp were large and well executed but the over abundance of sauce made the dish too heavy and rich. It didn't take much to say uncle. My partner's entree was ok, but nothing special. The meat was cooked to the desired temperature and was tender but did not have much flavor. The lobster tail had absolutely no color, and we wondered how in the world the kitchen could categorize it as being broiled. If we ever go to Amelia Island again, Baxter's will not be on our list to visit. read more

My boyfriend was really excited to take me out for a nice steak dinner while on vacation on Amelia Island. This place says "the best steaks in town" but I highly doubt that. I'll go with the positives first, because there's really only 4: - The fresh bread was delicious - The server was very sweet and gave us recommendations on what to do while in Fernadina - The wine was good - The salads were decent (I had a house salad, my boyfriend had the Ceasar) Here's the cons: - The restaurant is VERY dated. It badly needs an update as it looks like it hasn't been updated since probably the late 70s. We ordered the Surf and Turf, and at market price, it was roughly $55 per plate. At that price, I would expect a decent size lobster tail and a perfectly cooked petit filet. - The lobster tail was one of the smallest I've ever seen. It says 4oz on the menu, but I've cooked a lot of lobster in my time and there's no way that was 4oz even pre-cooked. - The steaks were ordered medium rare, they were delivered to the table still mooing. INCREDIBLY rare to the point of being cold in the center. This is inexcusable for a steak house. - We flagged the rare steaks for our server, who looked very annoyed (not at us, but at the kitchen staff which tells me that this happens a lot). She took the steaks back for us. - Anyone who eats at upscale restaurants will know that you don't EVER refire a cooked steak. It makes the meat tough and you're not going to get a good cook. A GOOD steakhouse will make you a whole new cut to get it right. So I was pretty disappointed when my same cut of steak came out 4 minutes later and was served to me. Now it was overcooked, while my boyfriend's was an "okay" medium rare (about 20 seconds overcooked, but still edible) - The vegetable side looked like it came from a can...it may have actually... - The mashed potatoes were so overcooked that they had the consistency of glue. - The steaks had zero seasoning...not even salt. We tipped our waitress well because she was very sweet and the food is not her fault, but we won't be coming back. Nearly $200 was spent on our meal and it was very underwhelming. read more

Not many fine dining includes both these days For takeout: the chicken & steak kabobs are really great. Come with rice & vegetables on the skewers. Also get a salad with it. My spouse takes to work the next day & says both re-heat well. Also takeout. Burgers pretty good but not a fan of the bun. Pickles are yum (not dill). And ask for skinny fries ! We had a delicious dinner at Baxter's! The service was great and the food was great! It is obviously popular with the locals, the restaurant was busy on a Saturday night. Steaks were cooked perfectly. We love a good escargot, and theirs was very good! The crab cakes were more like an imperial crab patty, but still good and not a reheated frozen crabcake like we've had at other places before. We enjoyed our dinner and date night! The hospitality in this place is right off hand noticed when you encounter the sweet gentlemen at the host stand. He made us instantly feel welcomed and sat us away from the larger tables because he knew it was our 2 year anniversary. On to our waitress, Kamryn. She was so sweet, same welcoming feel you experienced at the beginning. She engaged in conversation but maintained all her tables very well! She was very attentive! Two 2 ounce containers with A-1, without having to ask for some to go. And an extra cheesecake on her for our anniversary. She even took notice that Scott is a veteran. Next up, the food! We ordered the crab cake appetizer, Cesar salad, garden salad with balsamic and Two 14 ounce ribeyes with mashed potatoes and veggies! WOW! The crab cakes were crab....lots of it! Just enough binder to hold it together barely so it falls apart pretty easy. But hey, I would rather that than a crab cake with so much binder you don't taste crab! Am I right? Our salads were so good! The Cesar was so fresh, homemade (I think) dressing and croutons. Just enough dressing that it was drenched and it was crispy and fresh! The garden was the same crispy delicious greens, fresh veggies and a sneaky bell pepper under the lettuce! Balsamic was delicious and fresh too! Our ribeyes were cooked exactly how each of us like! Only problem was he got the steak I should have gotten and I got his. BUT that was our fault and we still enjoyed the steaks! They weren't overly seasoned. You can take the grill if you know what I mean. Beautiful cross markings. Juicy. Tender. So good. The sides....the veggies were julianned and consisted of broccoli, yellow squash, zucchini, carrots, red and yellow pepper . Delicious. Very light seasoning but cooked soft and full of flavor. The mashed potatoes were almost too good to even talk about! Yukon gold potatoes are used and it gives this buttery, creamy, golden flavor with little seasonings needed! I wouldn't even call them mashed potatoes. They are more crumbled! Uhhhh SOOOO GOOD! The waitress brought us our steaks boxed up, another excellent customer service skill, and offered us a complimentary cheesecake for our anniversary. Wonderful service. We loved our food, especially the mussel starter, the surf and turf, and the blue cheese sirloin. We had a big group and everyone's steaks were cooked perfectly.
