Baxters saved the day after another restaurant had closed due to staffing issues and we had to quickly find another venue. We had great food and service. Our party of six had crab cakes, fried shrimp, shrimp Caesar salad and one loves the cheeseburger. Our waitress Susan did a great job and was very friendly. read more

My friends wanted to try Baxter's after seeing the "Best Steak on the island" sign. I read reviews on Yelp that were not favorable and Trip Advisor ranked them #14 of 18 restaurants on the island, but I didn't want to be the guy to ruin the evening by bringing up poor reviews. I was just happy to spend some time with my friends. The reviews were spot on. The restaurant is a little dated which isn't a big deal to me. It was clean and our server was friendly and welcoming. They don't have any signature drinks, drink menu, or real beer list (unless you count the small slip of paper the server pulled out of her pocket). She said they had a full bar so my friend ordered a sidecar and the server responded I'm not sure the bartender knows how to make it but she can google it. My wife ordered a Moscow mule and she said I think she can do that. I can't remember the other drink but they were all things I can make at home and I have very little skill. Being armed with reading reviews I asked for a bottle of Fat Tire lol but I received a can of Intuition I-20. Before she opened it I said "ma'am that's not Fat Tire" she says yes it is and poured it. Not a big deal because mistakes happen and she brought me the right beer. My beer was great and everyone that ordered a mix drink were dissatisfied. My wife's mule was disgusting. That is a basic drink that has like 3 ingredients! The worse part is that it took over 15-20 mins to get our drinks. We had questions about the sides and the server rattled off several options and stated she didn't know why they weren't on the menu. We did get bread at about 25 mins and it was hot and delicious but my friends were over Baxter's at that point. Our server was very nice so we tipped her well and assured her she didn't do anything wrong and found another place to eat. Baxter's needs to staff multiple bartenders on the weekend during dinner. If the bartenders are inexperienced maybe having signature drinks on the menu that they have mastered and can make consistently well and fast would be better than bombing basic cocktails. Get the bread out faster because it's delicious and may make everyone forget that they don't have drinks yet lol. With so many great options on the island they need to step their game up. I came to Baxter's last night with my wife, her sister, and one each of their children. My meal was great. I ordered the seafood combo, which contained shrimp, scallops, and grouper. I have no complaints about my entree. It was spiced well. The vegetables served with it would have been better diced in large chunks rather than sliced into thin strips. And the bread was pretty good. But the water was clearly tap water. I would expect restaurants here to use some form of filtration considering the awful taste of the tap water here. And my Old Fashioned (whiskey drink) was not good. It wasn't sweet enough and contained way more ice than I usually see bartenders use. But the most egregious faux pas was the stir fry. My wife and her sister both shared this $20 entree. They realized quickly it looked and tasted exactly like the big bags of stir fry you can buy from Sam's Club, right downtown the sauce. I can't imagine someone would intentionally try to re-create the mediocre flavor of that bagged stir fry sauce. Either this restaurant achieved that or that's just the sauce they're using. My guess is the latter. So, be careful what you order here. It may be worth asking your server which items are cooked fresh before you order. read more

My husband and I were visiting the area the day before Valentines Day. We didn't realize that we would need a reservation but we called and Barbi said that they would take us. Visiting here for one night. We found this place by driving by. We actually had planned to go to a different restaurant and couldn't find it so we came here. Our server, I forgot her name, was very knowledgeable and attentive. I ordered the escargot and the burger with no bun and cesar salad. The escargot was the best I have ever had. Usually it comes chewy and over cooked at other places. Here it had the texture of mushrooms. Cooked perfectly. The beef patty was cooked medium rare and so flavorful. My friend got the calamari and the prime rib. Again both perfectly cooked. I will definitely come back when I am in town again. We spoke to the owner and he was so gracious. I was a little hesitant to come here because of some of the reviews but what a pleasant surprise. The food and service was excellent. I would rate them 4.5 stars. Starting with the bread that was baked with a crispy shell yet so soft and doughy in the middle - more please. My steak was seasoned and cooked exactly the way I like it - medium. It was so flavorful that I dipped the bread in the juices. Needless to say I needed no steak sauce. It was tender. Well worth it. My wife had the chicken Marsala with pasta. It too was cooked very well. There was plenty of sauce and mushrooms. The chicken was not under or over cooked as it was moist. Again a good pasta dish. We had no room for dessert, but the next table ordered the carrot cake which looked yummy. Maybe next time. Overall we were pleased with the service and atmosphere. When we return to Amelia island we will definitely come back. read more

A local favorite! Enjoy fine Chef speciality dining in a slightly fancy manner but black tie not required. On this visit we were having a nice Date Night and Celebrating hubby's b-day. (Like a fine wine ... He just gets better & better w age!!) We arrived a bit early at about 6:30 & was seated immediately. by 7/8ish there is often a wait - however there are nice outside seating tables & beautiful scenery while yA wait, along w a full beautiful bar area. The bar was popping & very loud at the hostess area, but the design of the building has the dining areas separated by walls with separate dining areas on both sides of the bar. So while dining the bar noise was muffled considerably. Upon being seated, our server reviewed the Chef specials of the day & offered wine pairing suggestions. I had a very nice Moscato split while hubby enjoyed his usual Bud Light. Wine is available by the bottle or glass, with a very nice wine selection. Hubby ordered the 14oz ribeye & I had the Chef special of Mahi Mahi w a delicious mushroom & asparagus reduction. Both plates came w salad or soup, Asst veggies, & baked potato. Hubby chose the Caesar salad which was very fresh & had the perfect amount of fresh Parmesan cheese while I enjoyed the French Onion soup (voted Best on Island) - it was terrific! The entire meal & experience was exceptional. The Mahi was absolutely the best I have ever tried & hubby's steak was cooked at perfection. The meals are pricey but the food is of great quality & yA get more than enough proportion wise. The Chef cooked food & ambiance is well worth the price along w the added benefit of not being required to dress above standard Island wear. The hostesses were dressed in evening wear, while the servers wore trousers with Logo printed shirts. yA will feel comfortable either in well styled dinner wear or jeans and a casual top. What a GREAT experience! We enjoy Baxter's and eat there when on the island. Good food, friendly people, nice wine pours. But this last time was special. I discovered I had lost my wallet and back tracked my day without success including my initial call to the restaurant. However, I received a call the next day telling me that the cleaning crew had success finding it! If you've ever lost your wallet you know the feeling of finding it! Anyway, it was totally intact. Steak was good, but for the price the sides that came with it tasted microwaved. Not very good! If I'm paying $30+ for a steak I would expect the sides to match that quality. We saw mixed reviews of Baxter's but the history of the restaurant on their website made me want to give it a try. We are glad we did! Two of us tried one of the night's specials, and I tried the beef k'bobs. We tried both the Caesar and house salads. Salads were fresh and served quickly. But once we get in there we go to the host stand and everyone at the bar starts staring at us (they are all 60 years plus). They proceed to say that we are "to young" to b dinning having dinner here. I ate here with a group. The reservations were great, they were on time. The food was just okay. I ordered the seafood platter blacked. It was horrible. No grouper so they gave me taplia. However the they forgot to put it on my plate. It arrived 5mins after my plate. The scallops had a beautiful cook but the seasoning was bad. It was ordered to be blacked but it tasted like they dropped some Old Bay seasoning, no acid no salt. The shrimp was just okay too close to overcooked. Literally the worst food I've ever had. Crab cake appetizer - inedible. It was mushy, reeked of a fishy smell and was an odd color. I took one small bite which affirmed it to be inedible. I'm not a steak person, so the chicken Marsala was my entree. It too was inedible - gummy with a gelatinous sauce. Again, one bite was more than enough. Vegetables tasted frozen - definitely not fresh. Even the dinner salad was abysmal. The lettuce tasted stale, for lack of better description. I don't know how that's possible! Even the Arnold Palmer that I ordered sat untouched. I don't know what was in it, but it most definitely was not fresh lemonade. Maybe some kind of powdered "lemonade"? Again - completely gross. The server noticed that the appetizer was untouched (before she served our meal) and asked "what's wrong - you didn't like it"? I replied "no", she cleared it from the table to make room for the entree and that was it. She literally never asked or bothered to check why the rest of the meal literally sat untouched. I'm not one to complain to a server, she did not cook the food, but I was pretty underwhelmed by her lack of acknowledgement when it came to acknowledging was was happening at the table. If I could give negative stars, I would. Wanted to try some place new for date night with the wife. Turned out to be date NIGHTMARE. The staff was friendly. The food was horrendous! The portobello appetizer was not cleaned properly and swimming in sauce. The Caesar salads were swimming in dressing that tasted like it was from a grocery store. The piece de resistance was the entree. I ordered the prime rib special medium rare; the wife ordered the steak au poive medium rare to medium. hers came out practically RAW. After I had eaten a couple of bites of my baked potato, I took a bite of my ICE COLD prime rib. felt it with my hand to double check. Sent both back. When the waitress brought the back, she told me they put my prime rib in the au jus to warm it up (remember I said I has eaten potato, cut steak with utensils and felt the steak with my hand...). My wife's meat came back well done after putting hers on the grill (au poise is a pan cooked steak). We were comped our entrees, fortunately. There was no flavor to the food, unless you are used to cafeteria or nursing home food. That and the health code violation of soaking an eaten steak in sauce served to other customers is why we will never return. The "chef" should be fired for doing what he did. read more

I am shocked at how crowded this place is? How could anyone think what they are serving is good? I had chicken that was so overcooked it was hard to swallow. The Caesar salad was so watered down it had absolutely no taste. The bread was decent. We were led to our table and ignored for about 10 minutes. Others that came later got waited on before us , our waitress was not nice at all until she laid the check down on the table at the end of our meal. I almost feel like my Caesar was the worst I've ever had. I had one at Brett's for lunch the day before and it was excellent . We've been dining at Baxter's for over 2 years. The service has (almost) always been great, so no complaints there. The food has always been ok and our favorite is prime rib night. After tonight's dinner (prime rib special), I doubt that we'll be back. I ordered my prime rib "rare as you can". It arrived medium well/well. I told the waitress the issue and she related that the Chef refuses to serve rare steaks. She stated that she put it in as medium rare, but it's the best she could do. I explained that Ive always ordered and received it rare in the past. Again I was told that the Chef refuses to serve rare. That being said, there was no offer to order something different or have it taken off the bill, So we brought it home and will just drown it in BBQ sauce. First the good news - although the parking lot was full and it was a Friday night, we were able to be seated quickly and the service was attentive. The service overall was very good and the staff appear to work very hard to keep things moving smoothly. Everybody seemed to have a couple of jobs each and were always moving. Kudos go to all of the staff. Unfortunately, the greatest service in the world can't overcome bad food, and that's what Baxter's delivered. I ordered the Ribeye but I honestly can't say for certain that is what I received. The piece of meat I received was so riddled with gristle that it made finding a good section of meat a challenge. This was heavy duty gristle as well, the kind that was hard to get through even with the steak knife. It was so pervasive that it was nearly impossible to cut around it and I had no choice but to chew on sections of beef in order to extract meat, and then spit out the remaining gristle. Others in my party had varying success with their meals. A different cut of steak didn't have the same problems I had but the flavor was lacking. The burger and chicken were well received. read more
