Other's at my table enjoyed their meal, but nothing was over the top. I ordered the Thai salmon, as soon as it came out it had a smell. I tasted it, had my mom taste it and she spit it out...I would have gotten sick if I ate it. Others at my table could smell the fishiness. Bad Food & Rude Manager We were very disappointed with the dinner tonight. Our burger was very bland, flavorless; Salad only consisted of small plate of lettuce, one slice of onion & a few pieces of tomato; Escargot tasted like it was out of a can & the sourdough bread taste like it's hasn't been baked throughly; Onion soup, very bland; My son's Fettuccine pasta was not edible-tastes like dry grated cheese just tossed with the pasta. But worse of all was when we complained to the manager, he was defensive & said that they have the best burger in town!! Ignoring completely our comment & opinion, no apology for all the food & made us feel like we don't know anything about food! I'm an Asian foodie & know my food pretty well. His treatment of the customer was unacceptable. I don't expect good response for normal cheaper restaurant, but this a place where they charge in the upper $20 & lower $30 for their steak! The one star is for the waitress that was unfortunately the only good experience at the restaurant. As you pull into Baxter's you are greeted with a sign that states, "Best steaks on the Island". You are further encouraged by the prices of the steaks on the menu--pricey. Once you have placed your order and presented your food you realize this place specializes in deception, not great steaks. If this the the best steak on the island, then the world of meat on Amelia is in serious trouble. A group of us play golf in Amelia every March. This year is the fifth and final visit to Baxter's. We are carnivores and love our meat. So, we have kept this place on our agenda in hopes that this year will be better than last. I have tried the strip and the filet. The steaks are chewy and uninspiring. These might work in Applebee's kitchen for $13.95, but for mid to high $20s, not so. For a couple of years I went for the fish specials and was not impressed. This year I opted for a burger, ordered it medium rare and got a hockey puck. I almost gave this place two stars because one of our members said his surf and turf as very good, while the other 6 of us vowed never to return. We enjoy the ambiance of Baxters ... You can arrive casual & enjoy outside seating, bar seating, table top service, or dine in the large comfy private booths. The menu has a nice range from sandwiches, soups & salads to very decadent chef specials. The steak is one of my favorites, it always satisfies & has never wavered on quality, cut, or taste. Foods are often provided with basic seasoning and may be somewhat pleasantly bland compared to some other high end dining experiences- but you can request optional seasoning as you like. Baxter's servers are always a pleasant distraction from the usual ... They seem genuinely happy to provide service and work hard to ensure you are happy, served well, and enjoy your visit. At times, like playoffs & big events, the bar can become very crowded & loud - but the dining rooms on the walled sides diffuse the commotion very well. Bruce ordered rib eye, 14oz, $30...I ordered blue cheese topped sirloin, 7oz, $27. We ordered a bowl of she crab soup...good. Dinner comes with salad (house-lots of fresh Romaine, 1/4 tomato, 1 slice red onion, 2 cucumber slices..tangy balsamic dressing/ husband-Caesar he said was good), medium baked potato, mixed vegs and bread. Bruce's steak seemed to have a bit of gristle and he had to eat in a way to get the tender meat; mine was thick and tasty. It took 45 min. to get our meal which rushed us to get to our 8 pm engagement. Was it good..yes, was it great....? Should we try again with unlimited time...maybe? We had 12 people this past New Years Eve 2017, and our server Debbie was Superb! Every single appetizer and entree came out at the same time and was PERFECT! The steaks were tender (my Filet was like butter) and very generous in size. They all had a delicious charcoal flavor. The seafood combo was very large and everything on it tasted fresh and prepared to order. The escargot was wonderful with a very crispy bread for dipping. The Ceasar salads were crisp with the right amount of dressing! I had friends come in from Florida and SC and they all were thrilled with their food. I lived on Amelia Island back in the mid-90's and Baxter's was around then. It's still there and so is the same bartender Mike. He did a good job then and still takes care of his bar guests. Reasonably priced food and drinks, but the preparation lacks a little something. Stopped in one night for a burger at the bar. For the price, it's a great deal, but if was over cooked, the tomato was all white and hard (inedible) and although I asked for onion and a side of BBQ, they didn't come with the burger...had to ask again. Went back a few days later for dinner. Then seafood platter had shrimp, grouper and scallops, but again, lacked any flavor. I know grouper is flavorless, but the Cajun seasoning was not present. Service was great on the return visit. Overall, good to stop in for drinks. Not my first choice for food. read more

I ordered the petite filet. It was average, comparable to a Longhorn's dinner. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was unappealing yet adequate. Service was fine but the corner booth they sat us at was lumpy with a very bright light right in my face. We stopped because the sign said best steak in town. So we are staying in Amelia Island for the weekend and our parents got us a gift card to go to Baxters because of how amazing this place is. They recommended we get there at 4:55 pm so we get a seat at the bar as soon as it opens at 5. We weren't able to make that, however when we did arrive, there was a booth saved for us near the back. The bar was packed, people laughing and carrying on (which is always a good sign)! So we sat, ordered our drinks and the conch fritters for our app. Everything came out pretty quickly. After enjoying our app, we ordered our meals- rack of lamb and ribs ... Amazing. Both were absolutely phenomenal! I have not ordered ribs on my own and wow, am I glad this was my first time! We had a nice enjoyable family dinner the other night. Server did an ok job but wasn't the most enthusiastic but she did well. We had the crab cake appetizer which was my favorite by far. I will be back for sure to have these crab cakes. The brie appetizer is great to share and the roasted garlic was a nice touch! For my entree I had the fresh grouper (blackened) with veggies and a mashed potato. I don't like salads so the waitress was able to sub a vegetable beef soup instead which was really yummy. The menu was unimaginative, but had "safe" options. The service was excruciatingly slow, though from what I saw in the dining room, it seems more the fault of the kitchen, rather than the server. Looking back, I should of trusted other yelpers reviews in regards to Baxter's. I was craving a delicious steak and for the most part received that. The booth that I was seated in was lumpy and the lighting was horrible. The server truly didn't want to be there. The food was less than mediocre. I ordered the Caesar salad, filet mignon, baked potato and veggies. nothing special about the salad (it didn't even come with croutons)or the veggies (slivers of red peppers and zucchini). The filet was cooked perfect and although salty, still quite good. I do not want to even discuss the baked potato because it was that bad. read more

The food was mediocre at best. The prime rib was tough and tasteless. The horseradish was good. The salad reminded me of grocery store bagged lettuce with mealy tomatoes. Me and my boyfriend just recently moved to the area and decided to go here for dinner after work. Things started out ok when we were seated it wasn't the greatest service to start out with but nothing crazy. We ordered our food and we both got the gourmet burger. It came out pretty quickly but the restaurant wasn't packed so it didn't seem unusually fast . As always I cut my burger in half to make it easier to eat and as soon as I separated the two half's it was nothing but a raw burger. The bottom bun was soaked in blood ! I stoped my boyfriend from taking a bite of his and asked him to cut open his and it was exactly the same if not worse ! I call the waitress to our table who walked by twice already and didn't make an effort to ASK us if our food was ok, I had to call her over as she was walking past the THIRD time. I showed her the food and she said " oh those are a little to medium rare " and I looked at her like she was crazy and replied " no this is a raw burger " . She tried making it seem like this was normal so I quickly corrected her because my boyfriend and I or anyone else could have gotten extremely sick from this! So she brings us new burgers but at that point I had lost my appetite and the rest of our time spent there we sat waiting around to get any further service and our check we had to waive her down to get anything . The whole time we never got to speak to a manager or got any apologies or anything just a check and a " thanks for coming " . NEVER again will I eat at this restaurant! Disgusting! Baxter's is Amelia islands version of cheers. The majority of my time was spent at the bar having drinks and a late night snack. The bartenders are snarky yet very funny. They will be your friends remember your name and your drink of choice. Matt "aka Dexter" to the locals, and Michael "aka Doc" run the bar like a well oiled machine. As the night goes on, the atmosphere gets better and better. Ask them for a TicTac, a custom drink that Matt and Michael have mastered. As far as the food is concerned its much what you would expect from a place like Baxter's, with a few very unusual additions, the escargot are not too shabby. The burgers are the exception, standout burgers that make you grin ear to ear. 3 stars because im really cheap with my stars but also because this is a great place to grab a burger and a beer if you don't want to be "downtown" and just want a place to stop in get good service and go home. Baxter's should not be confused for a high end steakhouse, or fine dinning experience. read more

Brought my wife and kids here for Mother's Day and had quite the poor experience. I was torn between a 1 or 2 star rating but after reading some of the ridiculous experiences others had here regarding billing and poor customer service that seem to be common trends at Baxter's, I gave it a solid 1 star. My wife doesn't eat meat, which isn't much of a big deal. She placed a simple order first and mentioned she would want the mushroom soup and a side of vegetables. Before the waitress finished taking our order, she (wife) had switched it and said she would rather have the vegetable stir-fry entree. When the food all came out, there was no stir-fry, just a small sad cup of vegetables. When we mentioned the stir-fry again, the waitress acknowledged that she had misunderstood and put in the order. That was not even the problematic part. After we were all done about 20-25 minutes later the food came out and my wife ended up pretty much eating by herself on Mother's Day. When the check came, it still had an order of vegetables, and now the full order of stir-fry. Now, if I jacked up someone's order, you should better believe I would comp or partially comp something. But that didn't happen, my wife asked for the vegetable side to be removed which I felt was going way out of our way, when we shouldn't even of paid for a full entree or at least half. Something! The tab was adjusted and no further consideration was given to the entree. If the place had absolutely great food, I could deal with paying a little more but this wasn't the case. I make a way better chicken Marsala then I had at Baxter's, and the ambiance is really poor and outdated. It's like they purchase everything from an estate sale from the 50's. Even after this, I gave the waitress 10% cause I feel like a pretty bad person not tipping someone. We all got mouths to feed and bills to pay, but she didn't deserve that. She deserved 0%. And it was my wife who convinced me to give her anything at all. Hope she realizes the low tip is a product of her service. Accommodate customers and provide a good experience, and they will likely be back. Not this place though...Nothing to praise about at this place. Recommend this restaurant institute the read-back if you don't understand someone's order, or to ensure you have everything right. Seemed like a good place when looking at the packed parking lot on a Tuesday evening, but its clearly the type of place where the bar is loaded with regulars. I personally do not have an issue with that but some might. Pretty basic surf and turf type place with pretty good prices.
