My husband and I came to town late and we're looking for a decent steak. Baxter's was open and we decided to give it a try. Service was excellent, the waitress was genuinely happy to serve us considering we walked in 10 minutes before closing. We loved the ambiance of this place. It's a bit outdated, but the big booths just brought us back to the family owned restaurants we ate at growing up. The steaks were great! Cooked to perfection. Their Caesar salad was fantastic as well. Also great dirty martinis. When we come back to Amelia Island Baxter's is on our list to go to again. read more

I never knew somebody could screw up lobster tails like this place did they were burnt and we paid $140 for four tails. I would not recommend this place to anybody did not even show concern when we complained. If you go here it's your own fault if you were not happy with your meal. read more

I've been here three times now. If you are wondering why Te reviews are so inconsistent, it's because this restaurant is inconsistent. But in the restaurant biz, inconsistent equals bad. I've had decent meals here, the fish sandwich is a good bet. They tend to overlook stuff and overall the quality doesn't match he price point. The service is ok but usually slow. Went to "Baxter's" on Amelia Island for our anniversary dinner because they said they were voted the best steakhouse in town for the last 10 years. Please, don't even waste your time looking at the place as you drive by. Asked for a medium well steak (light pink) and it looked like it was cooked in the gates of hell. Literally stuck/seared to the bottom of the hot plate. The veggies were just slivers and the baked potato was dry. The decor, something between beach and kabuki with a strong flare of 80-90's. I knew I was right when "Carrie by Europe" started playing over the speakers (a nice touch). I was told it is a "fancy" restaurant, but most were dressed in shorts and even bathing suits and t-shirts, I swear I am not making this up. Not what I was expecting for $35 steak place. We knew we were in trouble when the large party next to us ordered philly cheese steak sandwiches and only ate half of it. Mind you, sandwiches in the best steak house....... This is exactly the place that Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey would have their hands full with. Our waitress, was good and did her best but you could tell she too knew this place is on life-support. I wanted to like this place. But sadly that was not to happen. First off our party of 4 (family) was seated at the only table in the place with no light. (More suitable for date night. )Our server was nice and who came to get our drink orders but didn't return for a while - when she did we ordered calamari appetizer while we looked over menu. We then ordered our meals...by the way calamari had yet to arrive. Had a little bread which was good. Salads came and they were ok. (Still waiting for calamari...) Everyone around us had eaten and left by this point. Our server kept apologizing for our long wait and forgetting our calamari. Our dinners arrived after an inordinately long time and the food was ok. Got the bill and It was a large bill for sub par food and service. & we never got our calamari. Baxters accommodated our group of twenty-five quite well for our big night "off the resort". I Had the fried seafood platter, it was pretty good. Those around me had steak stuff all pretty good but most of all we were all comfortable and well taken care of. read more

Trying to make a reservation at Baxter's, I searched for their website and found Yelp. I happened to start reading the reviews and could not believe what I read. How upsetting. I have been visiting Amelia Island for years and recently moved to North Jacksonville. Not only have I been to Baxter's multiple times but always bring friends and family here when they visit. Its always a wonderful experience and no one is ever disappointed. The Surf and Turf is delicious and one of my favorites. Ceaser salad is excellent. The lettuce crispy and the dressing very flavorful. The filet or ribeye is ALWAYS cooked to perfection from rare, medium rare, well to pittsburgh. The meats are seasoned perfect. The lobster is meaty,tender and flavorful. I always hesitate to order lobster in most restaurants as it can be dry and mealy. Baxter's has never failed at serving a sweet and fresh tasting lobster tail on any of my visits there. The atmosphere is a homey tavern feel in a small town. You can be dressed up or in shorts and still feel welcome. The hostess are right there to greet you when walking through the door. If its season, you may have a longer wait time but on normal days you can get right in and the waitress is soon to arrive first asking what you want to drink. I have never felt rushed or ignored. They let you set your own pace for your dining experience. The booth were comfortable. Its known as a steak house but offer many other options on their menu. To me, its a definite winner and a great option when on the Island. read more

Cannot imagine the negative comments regarding the proprietor, Michelle, and the wonderful and CONSISTENT food and service his establishment offers. We dine out five out of seven nights. The service was pretty good and the food was very average. I wasn't impressed with Baxter's at all. My steak was an average steak but the sides of a boiled potato and some odd vegetables were flavorless and disappointing. The meal was not worth the hefty price. Very Disappointing. Worst Place I have eaten on the Island. It was our date night and we always venture out to new places. My husband order the Grouper Delight and it was Horrific worst taste and sight ever!!! The presentation, taste and serve SUCKED!. They advertise a full bar but the bartender can not make the simplest of drinks like a Buttery Nipple. We order Pineapple Juice and Bacardi Rum, we got the cheapest rum ever and sour pineapple juice. My steak blue cheese was order well done it come out Bloody and Cheesy. We did not ask to see the manager, but the waitress acknowledged that we did touch our food but offered no concessions. We order the Gumbo and had to add sour cheese and hot sauce to enjoy it. None of the food was seasoned and the crab cakes were not cooked. Just a Horrible Evening!!! Friendly hostess. Our waitress was forgetful . For a Restuarant with such pricey items it seems a bit out of place to see wait staff wearing t-shirts. I ordered cream mushroom and asparagus soup which was inedible. My ribeye steak was thin over cooked and tasteless. Served frozen over cooked ,soggy, listless veggies. My husband ordered steak Diane which tasted like beef stroganoff . Interestingly the daily special was beef stroganoff . He said it tasted like pot roast with cream of mushroom. (cream of asparagus?) same as my appetizer? Came with the same over cooked soggy vegetable medley and bland over cooked soggy rice . The only thing more surprising then their claim that they had the best steaks was that they have remained open and that we were gullible enough to believe them. In all it wasn't really terrible but very marginal at best. Probably the worst dining experience we've had in years despite the price. This is not going to be pretty. With a reservation, waited for over 15 minutes while two other parties arrived after us and got served first. We collared a hostess, a waitress came over and she said "nobody told me you were here". You would have thought this inauspicious start would have resulted in Johnny on the spot service, but not so. We waited just as long to order. The food was very good - beef stroganoff and beef tips. Unfortunately, however, the air conditioning was not working, and this is Florida. The food is ok. Not great, but good enough. The service is good; attentive without being intrusive. My wife and I both had steaks. They were both over cooked but not too bad. The baked potato had obviously been cooked hours ago and kept warm. Our orders were brought to the table wrong but the waitress fixed the problems cheerfully. Overall, not quite worth the money, but not awful. One note: what is with the t-shirts on the waitstaff? If they are trying for an upscale experience, and the food is only mediocre, they should at least put the waitstaff in nicer outfits. read more

I've been going to Baxter's for 15+ years and live up the street. One of the only restaurants who will seat you late and not make you feel like an inconvenience. It's not fancy or cheap. The steak was pretty good (ribeye cooked medium rare), but there is no way to rate any higher given the overall experience. The baked potato was dry, the vegetables probably from a frozen bag. The service, while wait staff are quite polite, takes a hit due to the long wait times for the food. Also, one of the wait staff had on perfume that was so strong it gave me slight headache. But again, the steak was good. Next time, I would order the steak to go and prepare fresh sides at the resort. read more

While vacationing on Amelia Island a local told us about Baxter's as we were making our way inside from the parking lot another local tells us to sit at the bar because it's like an episode of Cheers. She claimed the back dining area was drab; I can't speak to this myself due to following her advice and sitting at the bar. Bartender Kay had it going on. She was serving a large bar by herself as well as serving the entire restaurant. She was welcoming and made great recommendations. We had the crab cakes for a starter and it was a CRAB cake. No breader covering up the sweet taste of crab. I ordered the trio, shrimp, scallops, grouper blackened. It was great. Came with a choice of a cesar or side salad. Two sides as well as the salad. Kay recommended the baked potato and mixed veggies. The potato was a potato... but the mixed veggies of green beans, peppers, zucchini and squash was amazing. The other two in my group got grouper and their plates were clean by the end of dinner. The atmosphere draws an older crowd but my 30ish year young self felt very invited and enjoyed my delicious meal. read more

The steak is pretty decent and priced well in line for what you get. However, beware of other dishes. My friend recently had the stuffed flounder special and it was downright awful. The so-called stuffing was inedible and the fish was rubbery. A terrible dish. Come on guys, if you can do decent steak you can at least do some other dishes as well. read more

We are staying on The Plantation and have friends who also live here. So he says lets go to Baxter's it has great food. We were a party of six. Well... The place is OLD the furnishings are from the 80's and it shows. The servers wear dingy T- shirts and pay no attention to their appearance. Our server was bothered anytime we asked anything... Our friend can't have dressing so has gotten used to eating salad with out it. WELLLL the server made fun, yes fun of her order of Caesar salad no dressing. She says, "So you just want a plate of lettuce and cheese?" Food was tasteless! Most was Frozen for sure. The petite filet was ok... Just ok. Sides were bad! Ordered Conch Fritters hmmmmm I couldn't find conch in them so my advice is DON'T GO. If it had not been that I didn't want to hurt our friends feelings I would have left food and walked out! Been several years since I last ate at Baxters. This really is the only steak restaurant on the island. They also have seafood items, and after eating the 2 fried shrimp in our fried green tomato appetizer, I can recommend the fried shrimp dinner entree. Caesar salad was, in my opinion, superior to the garden salad. Fresh bread is very good, as others have commented. We had the petite filet, the steak Diane, which is also filet, and the ribeye. All entrees were very good with sautéed veggies and choice of potato. Filet was very tender, good flavor, and cooked as ordered. The ribeye was a good steak, but I might give the edge to either filet on this occasion. To put it in perspective, Baxters should give you a better steak experience than Longhorn, but not quite on the level of Ruth's Chris. Price point will be between the 2 previously mentioned chains as well. As I remembered from previous visits, Baxters delivered a solid meal. read more
