I have not been to this restaurant in about four years, but told my wife that it was excellent. The kid had the bacon bleu cheese burger which she wolfed down, the wife had the shrimp tacos which she said had the perfect amount of spice and flavor, while I went with the lobster roll. Visually Baxters is the kind of place you'd think would be good. DON'T HAVE THE PASTA!!!!!!!!! or the meatloaf or the.... well you get the idea. So much potential and constant disappointment. My guess is that the kitchen is run by a 15 year old and his friends who have absolutely no idea what food is supposed to taste like, smell like, be cooked like or even be edible. case in point is the aforementioned pasta and meatloaf. I could literally do better drunk off my ass after a 3 week bender with Keith Richards. Why is there NO tastebuds or technique in the kitchen??? We go back because the servers are nice, the place is comfortable and has this really cool feel BUT THE FOOD SUCKS!!!! PLEASE step up and make something that is at least average. This place was so amazing to stop and eat at before heading out of town. The atmosphere is light, the staff was friendly, and the food was amazing. After being on a boat all day I was super tired and ordered the Vietnamese coffee and it not only looked pleasing but it also tasted awesome. Interactive coffee needing to stir it myself after it finished dripping through but I loved it. The clams and mussels were the biggest hit for an appetizer and the sauce the food was sautéed in was so good that we kept ordering bread to dip it in until it was done. Their meatloaf is massive so if you want, I recommend splitting it with someone. Most popular item on the menu and after trying some, I understand why. The lobster roll was also a breath of fresh air in that town and was seasoned well and tasty. Lastly, I applaud the steak makers. My mom & I both really enjoyed the portobello burgers. The flavors were so phenomenal! It was cold out and the amazing service, tasty food and vegetarian option made our day. I also want to give them MAJOR props for offering a gluten free bun and if I remember correctly there wasn't an extra charge for it. I ordered a tuna poké bowl that was terrible. There was lots of fish, but only a tiny portion of rice, and aioli sauce. When I requested ginger and wasabi I was told they didn't have any. The meal was way too expensive, and I left hungry and totally disappointed. I told the waiter to load up on the rice (cheapest thing ever) and to have someone shop a half mile away and get fresh ginger and wasabi from the store if they are gonna try and produce a poké bowl at a premium price. Our server started out being rude and was rude the whole way through the meal. Forgot the salad dressing , never got a second cup of coffee and when my sister asked her another glass of wine she seemed inconvenienced. The key lime pie is good but our burgers were dry and overcooked. No flavor whatsoever. The building is nice and cozy and the owners are nice ppl. A short walk from our hotel my wife tried the hanger steak special with a berry sauce. She did not like either the steak or the sauce. The cheeseburger I ordered was ok but definitely not worth the $16 it cost. The key lime pie seemed more like a cheesecake and didn't look like any key lime pie we've ever seen. Had lunch here today. Extremely disappointed. The service was great. That's about the only positive thing I can say. Hubby and I had the salad that had turkey and bacon and avocado. It was overdressed, the avocado was inedible. It seemed like they accidentally cut up a rubber avocado. You couldn't even cut it with a knife. The turkey was undercooked in places. One of the worst things was the smell. There was someone with terrible BO. I hate to even bring it up, but it was noticeable the minute you walked into the restaurant. It was a worker not a guest. The food is not that great, and over priced. The place is very small. Menu could have more options.

I liked Baxter's but I have to say the service was slow!!! I asked for a "small" fry and got a bowl, so I was bummed that the waiter didn't hear what it was I wanted. I ordered the feta to go with the lobster roll, which as tasty but tiny! For 18 bucks it was pretty small. I do think the food was good but the wait turned me off, it wasn't super busy. Traveling from Oregon to Montana.... stopped here...we had just started our yummy appetizers when our main meal came....The Bruschetta bread was not even crisp.. just cut bread...rather bland...Mussels and clams... yummy! Main dinner....Crab cake - very good! I am super picky about crab cakes since I am from the east coast... loved the rice... seemed to be based with seafood stock... green beans... Incredible!! Halibut crisp on outside tender on inside. Ordered a burger for our dog...it was fresh and not a frozen type patty. We went i nto this restaurant on Thursday 9/02/21at 7pm. We were looking for something to eat and a parking spot opened up in front, and my wife said she heard good things about this restaurant. There are a lot of 5 star reviews, so we must have hit a bad night Regardless, the food was lousy. So why 3 stars instead of 1? The food is 1 star... but the restaurant is nice and inviting, very nice. The help was stellar. So 1 star for each of those...really wanted to make this a 2 star review, but I didn't want to do that to the wonderful staff The food was amazingly bland...never had such bland food before, especially at the prices we paid. The broccoli was not cooked all the way through, if at all. The mashed potatoes look great, but tasted very bland. The steak I ordered was a high quality piece of meat, and cooked perfectly but somehow tasted like cardboard. I added a lot of salt to both sides, and the potatoes, and waited a minute and it was better, much better. Don't understand how they didn't add just a pinch of salt when they cooked it. The potatoes never really were great, but I did end up eating it all because it was $36. We spent $135 with tip, but will never understand the 5 star reviews, unless this was an accident and never happened before.... Id go in here to have a beer, but I wouldn't eat here again... read more

Very disappointed with the service as well as the quality of food. Maybe the cooks were in a rush since it was a busy Friday night but our party of three all experienced over cooked meals. The pan seared scallops were only seared/cooked on one side but way over done, should not have to use a knife to cut scallops. The crab cakes were burnt on both sides and very dry. The duck confit tasted like it was fresh out of the microwave. The dinner options had a great concept behind them so maybe we will try it again on a less busy night. The side of green beans and rice were okay but you can't really go wrong with sides. I'm not a Sandpoint native and I don't live here currently, but exploring the foodie scene here is one of my favorite things to do when I visit. It's fun to see the difference in atmosphere between the summer months and in the winter when Schweitzer is open, but no matter what season you decide to visit Baxter's on Cedar, you're going to have an amazing meal. The atmosphere is slightly industrial but cozy; with the exposed brick walls and the wood plank half wall accent it feels like you're in your own farm kitchen. There is plenty of staff always milling around to assist, 4 people other than our party's assigned server came to speak with us, and everyone was extremely accommodating. After trying everyone's entrees, I feel confident saying you cannot go wrong with anything that you order. The duck breast, pork chop with coffee rub, and chicken of the day were all cooked to perfection. But whatever main you have, DO NOT under any circumstances skip on the Key Lime pie. It is out of this world! I love that in Sandpoint you can wear whatever you want to most restaurants, but don't be fooled into thinking this place isn't great because of that. Enjoy a great day of hiking or skiing in the surrounding area and then be sure to save some energy and stop here, you won't be disappointed. read more
