This is one of those very rare instances in which I will provide a review for a provider that did not ultimately win the job. As I often do on Yelp, I reached out to multiple providers before choosing one based on their evaluation and proposal. Sometimes the choice comes down to price; sometimes there are other factors. In this case it was a difficult choice. Most providers in this line of work have an apples-to-apples price-matching policy, which makes proposals even more competitive and the choice even more difficult. Additionally, there was more than one provider who provided excellent service on the initial evaluation visit and whose proposal seemed very reasonable. Adkins was definitely this kind of provider. He showed up on time (early, in fact) for the evaluation visit, and was highly professional, courteous and well spoken. He examined the job to be done in detail, took pictures, and asked and answered all of the relevant questions patiently. He was very willing to accommodate our needs. He submitted his proposal promptly and effectively. I am very confident that Adkins and Bay Energy Solutions would have done an excellent job. Unfortunately, when providers are neck-in-neck, you can still only choose one, and in this case it was not Bay Energy Solutions. I ultimately selected Bay Energy Heating and Air as my main contractor for a heat pump because of Adkins' knowledge of HVAC systems, his responsiveness to my questions, the way he worked with me to get the model I wanted (slightly more efficient than the one originally proposed), and the included five-year warranty in the final price for the unit (as opposed to the extra $1,500 his competitor wanted for the same warranty on the same unit). Moreover, when the installation was complete, Adkins handled the paperwork for the state rebate that's an important part of the incentives I needed to go ahead with this project. Adkins' team of installers were also top-notch (I've posted a separate review for them) and, when a question came up just as the installation was starting because the installer recommended a different thermostat configuration than Adkins and I had first discussed, Adkins responded in a very timely and positive manner. He had no problem with the suggested change and agreed it made sense even though it resulted in a lower final invoice for me. In other words, rather than try to convince me to spend the extra money, he served my best interests, not his. As a result, I have no hesitation in recommending Bay Energy Heating and Air to anyone who needs HVAC service, whether for a new or existing system. Right off the bat Adkins was the first of 3 companies to respond to my request for pricing of a new air conditioning system to replace my gas furnace. It helped that I knew what I wanted and since I am a licensed contractor, I was able to purchase a system and do most of the preparation work myself I just needed them to remove my gas furnace and connect up the new high efficiency components together of which they did a fantastic job. The other companies would only sell me a whole system and not just install the equipment that I purchased. Bay Energy had no problem with just the installation and also supplied the couple of items that I had not thought of. The pricing was fair and the work was good. Never pressured me to do anything above what I wanted. So if you're looking for an experienced, reliable a/c contractor I would highly recommend Adkins and his company Bay Energy. My house in Pinole now has heating AND cooling and is utilizing my original ducting. We are super happy and will be very comfortable this summer and into the future as it's getting hotter and hotter every year it seems. From the start I could tell that Adkins was a professional. He was on time, personable, and listened carefully to what I needed. Then, when he understood what my requirements were, he made his recommendations. My dad's house had its original furnace from the 50s somehow still running up until last winter when it finally gave out. We got a couple of quotes from other HVAC companies for a complete replacement of the furnace and ductwork but couldn't justify paying such a high price for something only slightly better than what we had. Adkins was quick to provide us with two very reasonable estimates including one for a heat pump system that includes AC and can eventually hook up to solar power. We called Bay Energy Solutions to get a quote to replace the 28 year old furnace and AC unit that came with our home. When Adkins arrived, he spoke to my husband and looked at the units. Our 4 month old dryer was not drying and giving us a reading that the exhaust vent was 80% clogged. The hubby tried to snake it, then vacuum and we did get a lot of debris, plugged everything back in and then got a 90% clogged error - worse! Thought it was the dryer, so we unscrewed and cleaned the lint tray and still had the same issue. We tried contacting LG and they had me do a dryer reset and no change. The hubby attached a stocking to the end of the dryer and the issue was resolved! Since we are new homeowners and there was a lot of deferred maintenance in other areas, we knew we needed pros to fix the vent clog and that it was likely the vent since bypassing it fixed the error. Hubby checked the roof and sure enough, no air was coming through. I called Bay Energy Solutions on Saturday afternoon and explained the issue. They had come up on Google when I searched for "clogged dryer vent" and serviced our area. The person on the phone was nice and said we were scheduled for Monday morning. I wanted to have duct cleaned and part of a duct replaced. Adkins replied to yelp inquiry very quickly and he gave estimate for the job quickly. Communication with Adkins was very easy through yelp messages and text. When he came out for the job, he was very professional and nice. He explained everything he was doing, showed us everything he was doing if he asked, and did not bother us if we are working. After he cleaned everything up, he noticed that our duct needed to be sealed. He sealed them for us very nicely. He then inspected if we needed to replace the duct. He showed why we did not need to replace it, and showed us full video of how he cleaned inside of the duct. At the end, he only charged us for the cleaning even though he bought replacement duct before he arrived. Long story short, I am happy with the interaction, quality of the job and the value.
