Love Bayou Jacks! First of all they are located in Roanoke and easy to park and walk to the restaurant. They have a huge offering of seafood and sides. My favorite is their fried shrimp and okra. If you have been to Pappadeaux then you know the prices are pretty high for fried shrimp and know that Bayou Jacks tastes better, the batter and shrimp flavor are really good at a more reasonable price. Went to Bayou Jacks in Roanoke with a large group and overall it was a good experience, especially food-wise. We ordered the boudin egg rolls, boudin sausage appetizer, alligator appetizer, and crawfish with the voodoo seasoning. Everything was really flavorful and well seasoned, and the crawfish had a great kick. The appetizers were perfect for sharing and made it easy for everyone to try a few things. They also did a nice job accommodating our larger party. Our server was friendly, attentive, and handled our table well, which isn't easy with a group that size. The only thing that stood out was the manager. He didn't greet any tables while we were there. At one point he brought a dish to our table but didn't say anything, and later spent quite a while standing by the bar on his phone. It didn't negatively impact the service we received, but it did leave us a little unsure about the management presence. Overall, we had a good experience and enjoyed the food. As someone from Louisiana, I always walk into Cajun spots with an open mind. This place lands somewhere in the middle for me. Not the most authentic I've ever had, but definitely not bad either. We ordered crawfish, boudin, alligator nuggets and the catfish po'boy. The crawfish were a really good size (always a win), and overall the flavors were nice. One thing that stood out, though is they dust the outside of their crawfish after cooking. Back home, you'd usually rely on the boil to soak all that flavor into the meat. So there's no need for that extra step (and honestly, you're not really eating that part anyway). In Louisiana you might get a side eye for that but it didn't ruin the experience for me. The boudin, alligator nuggets and po'boy were enjoyable. Nothing that blew me away, but definitely satisfying and a great place to bring young kids. Where this place really shines is the vibe. It's spacious, plenty of indoor seating, and has a great family-friendly atmosphere. You could easily bring a group or just hang out and have a laid back meal. The waitstaff was nice and welcoming, which always makes a difference. Prices were great. Overall, it's a cool spot especially if you're looking for a casual Cajun inspired meal in a fun, accessible setting. If you grew in Louisiana and want an authentic meal then I would say try another place but overall satisfying and a good time and great spot to take the family. read more

My husband chose this place for our Wednesday night dinner with friends we do each week. We have seen it so many times in Roanoke and have never been here. The food was really good. We had the dirty balls for an appetizer at happy hour. Took picture after we ate one ! These were very good. They have a bit of a kick but not much. After several recommendations from friends, we made it into check out Bayou Jacks. Love the ambiance of the space and expansive dining and bar area. Our server seemed a bit distracted and our drinks were fine, nothing special. Food was pretty good, we asked for suggestions and he offered the dirty balls as an appetizer choice and the calamari - we enjoyed both. I had the coconut mahi mahi as my entree and the fish was flavorful and veggies well seasoned. Others had pasta, a salad with some chicken and there is a kids menu to choose from as well. My forth visit and I try to order something new each time but I do always order a cup or a bowl of gumbo which is my only meh moment . We came here for happy hour/early dinner, around 4 p.m. on a weekday. Loved our experience! We got appetizers, drinks, and mains. We got the dirty balls and fried okra as appetizers. I would order both of those again, as both were out of this world! The dirty balls are large balls of deep fried dirty rice with queso and a spicy red sauce coating them. The fried okra was super fresh, and the breading had Cajun spice in it. The okra was served with some kind of herbed aioli that was also amazing. My friend got the Po Boy as her main dish, and she substituted fried gator for fried shrimp. They were more than happy to accommodate that request and it was amazing. Highly recommend. I got the Oysters on the Half Shell (raw) and the Ménage a Trois for my main course. Oysters were fresh and HUGE, and they came with plenty of lemons, cocktail sauce, horseradish, and saltines. A couple of the oysters still had some grit in them, but you always run that risk when ordering gulf oysters, so it's not a huge complaint. The Ménage a Trois was a great way to sample all of the Cajun staples on the menu. The crawfish etoufee could have used more acid, but was pretty decent once I squeezed some lemon in it. The red beans and rice aren't something I'd necessarily have again. They were fine, but they looked and tasted like pinto beans, not traditional red beans. I LOVED the gumbo, however. If coming back, I would order the large gumbo over getting the Ménage a Trois again. For drinks, we got Abita Amber on draft, the house margarita on the rocks, the swamp juice, and the blueberry lemonade. All were amazing. We definitely plan to return in the near future. I'm back! I'm sooooo glad we came back years later to give them another shot. My last review speaks for itself, but I strongly believe in how management is everything and management can change. ANYWAY, we came at a time that could be considered off-peak, it was neither crowded nor dead, but service was spectacular. I asked the server's name and I "think" she said Sophie? Anyway, she was great, full of good suggestions and even made some substitutions I was grateful to get. The food was DELICIOUS! And they had a great promotion to get free "Dirty Balls" appetizer with 2 entrees (Sun-Thurs), and actually never had them before and they were very nice. Might get them again in the future. We have even purchased the dirty balls shirts to take to friends in PA. (Bring back the shirts!) Anyway. It's crawfish season on the Bayou and you don't want to miss another day! (I've had them 3 times this week!) they are great size, perfected cooked and seasoned. Why I feel the need to get a photo with the biggest one!? ‍No idea. But here ya go. Don't forget the dirty balls. They are big as well. And so good! For those that only eat salads for lunch, they got you covered as well. And for the meat eaters be sure to check out the hamburger topped with roast beef. Huge! Now I'm a crawfish girl so if they are on season I don't even need to consider alternatives. First time trying this place and everything was a disaster like an episode of bar rescue. We were seated promptly but sat and waited about 15 minutes before a server asked if we had been helped. Keep in mind at this time there was a big table seated but I noticed they received their food and were handing the server their checks. Otherwise the rest of the restaurant wasn't busy by any means and the manager was even sitting on his phone for all to see. Which tells me they weren't exactly so busy we couldn't have been acknowledged earlier. Also, 2 other tables came in behind us and were immediately greeted and taken care of. A nice older gentleman stopped by and asked if we had been helped then got our server who was a girl with glasses who had been standing at the host stand when we walked in. She took our order quickly and brought drinks out as soon as she could. My husband ordered their pasta but asked for no sausage. She said "got you" then left to put the order in only for it to come out with sausage. I told her the pasta was wrong and she said "oh I thought you said no onions.." She went to fix the pasta and it came out quickly..... But with a hair in the middle of it. At this point we were over it and just wanted to leave. I told her how disappointing everything was and she left and came back and said the manager said we didn't have to pay for anything and sorry for what happened. I've managed restaurants for years and have been a server and a bartender and what I've taken from that is if a table has had a terrible experience, it is the manager who is supposed to come by and talk to the table. Management doesn't need to hide behind their servers and need to step up and address the table themselves to apologize or to try and remedy the situation. That was my biggest issue. I'm not 100% sure but I thought Jack and grill, los compadres, and bayou jacks all had the same owner. We have only had great experiences at those two restaurants and think whoever is managing those concepts needs to send some help over to bayou jacks. Delicious food here and fairly affordable! We started with fried okra. Served with remolade - yum. They have a decent selection of craft beers on tap. Not as many as some, but they do have a variety so whether you like stouts, lagers or IPAs, you can probably find one you like. I had the fish tacos served with dirty rice. A nice portion, not too huge, and tasty. Next time I want to try the half portion of po'boy with gumbo. My hubs got the catfish topped with etoufee and wow, what an amazing dark roux. When our good friends came to visit from out of town we wanted to visit the restaurant in person to show off our new favorite place. What a disappointment. One server, with an attitude, for our side of the restaurant. It was only 3:00 on a Monday afternoon. There were four tables with patrons. We waited quite a while before a server came to our table. We tried to order off of the beer chalkboard, but she kept saying she didn't know if they had several of the items listed. We ordered a couple of appetizers and drinks. The appetizers came out relatively quickly. Unfortunately, we never received any drinks. Not even a glass of water. We finally hailed a gentleman from the bar and asked if we could please get some water. He brought us some water. The waitress finally brought one drink and said oh, sorry, we are out of the beer you requested. Did I mention that she has still not taken our dinner order? By the time we all finally got our food, my husband was so embarrassed in front of our friends that he couldn't eat his dinner. But of course, we had to wait and wave her down to get the bill.
