I spent a few months in Poland at the beginning of this century, I always come to one of the" Bazaars" whenever I have a craving for kielbasa, Prince Polo, ptasie mleczko, fromage frais yogurt (I forgot what they call this in Polish), cheap produce and other eastern european goodies. The sausage selection is amazing. Don't forget to visit the full service deli for other kinds. It's always fun to try the different cheeses from Russia, Poland, Lithuania, etc. They have some good Greek and Turkish imports as well. Some people have complained about the service at the other outlets. I have never had a problem at the Brookline ones. The service at the Cambridge St store can be nice and terse at the same time. On 2 occasions, I've needed help reading the cyrillic and the guys/gals have been totally cool about it. The last time I went, I asked one of the clerks mopping the floor (who I heard speaking Russian) if they had a certain Odessa sausage, and he looked at me like I was crazy and replied "Do I look like I know?!" Yikes, he must have been having a bad day... I'll still come back, but I'll keep asking the nice clerks for help. read more

Great source for a variety of jams and preserves, smoked fish, cured meat, prepared rabbit and duck. Lots of interesting bread. We are huge fans of the mushroom pate, eggplant and zucchini spreads. Always good, every once in a while, to go shopping where you are the stranger. It is humbling to rely on the kindness of others. I was introduced to the Bazaar by my Uzbeki roomie after more than 2 yrs of living practically across the street from the place! The place is a gem. All my russian friends say that its the best Russian store in Boston. The fresh produce here is the cheapest, even compared to the big grocery stores. And the quality is as good if not better. Apart from the fresh produce section - they have huge arrays of Russian groceries - chocolates, cheeses, breads ( did I say russian bread is the best!!), wines, beers, meats and lots of 'whatisthis'!! Also they have a Deli! Although on the expensive side - they have a large selection of exotic meats and salads. The only problem is trying to understand what is what - as food labelling is minimal and most Deli workers dont speak English well...although there is this VERY cute girl there, who speaks English very well and is very helpful:)...somebody please get me her phone number:-P They also have a bakery - with a decadent looking selection, but I always steer clear of that section, lest I end up buying 5 pounds of baked yumminess! So cant comment on the baked goods - from what I have heard from my Russian friends - its very authentic.. Overall the place is good value for money, and makes grocery shopping more exciting than the chain stores. Even if I wasn't of Russian descent and enamored of the various foodstuffs of my childhood, I would still highly recommend doing your major shopping here, for the reason that the basics are SO much cheaper than at Star. What they charge for meat and produce is highway robbery; buying my fruit, veggies, meat, and deli products at Bazaar not only saves me tons of money, it also often offers a better selection. We recently ordered some food for about $200 from Bazaar for my father-in-law's birthday party. It was great: Food included a number of salads and various hot meat, fish and vegetables dishes. All food was fresh and delicious. We had 15 people at the party and everyone loved the food. Everything was nicely packed for pick up from the store. Presentation was excellent. One of the store clerk's assisted me with loading all that food into my car. Great customer service and attention to detail. The price was great for so much great food. Background: I lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (the Polish neighborhood) for a year and visiting frequently for a year before that. My boyfriend is Polish. And a very dear friend of mine is Russian. Needless to say, I love myself some Russian and Eastern European food. This little grocery store is amazing! I love when you walk around the store and you can't read the labels because they are in so many different languages. The cheeses are all listed by what country they are from. The selection of meat and fish is incredible (whole frozen rabbits? whole frozen fish? cow tongue?). In all, this store is just FUN, and incredibly reasonably priced. They all have great pre-made salads and pickled everything that is perfect to pick up for a quick dinner. The store is also incredibly clean and all of their produce is pretty fresh (unlike some other ethnic groceries in the neighborhood) and it is just a pleasure to shop here. Whenever my boyfriend and I go he is just in heaven, and can find everything he used to eat across the Atlantic. I actually have to avoid shopping here to frequently or I buy so many random and delicious things that my wallet is empty on the way out. Great multi-ethnic mostly-CIS grocer which seems shockingly-bigger on the inside than the outside. A great and wide selection of fruit wines and vodkas. Produce seems so-so, but the deli is wonderful and the staff of it is a delight (I have a marked fondness for one of the women from Ufa working there, who is patient and friendly and has perfect English; if your Russian's as bad as mine, she's the one you should hope to speak with!) Big bakery/pastry section at the street side of the store is a little overwhelming and indistinct, and the dairy case is like a punch in the face, in the best and most disorienting of ways. There's a section of shelf that is really packed floor to ceiling with sunflowers. In the aforementioned dairy case, there's two brands of ersatz kumis, neither of which seemingly is made from mare's milk despite the cute horse logos. No fresh kvas, a wide selection of frozen pelmeni and a reasonable but not remarkable selection of frozen mushrooms. Like other Russian grocers in the area, sadly no sign of smoked, dried kosichka-style cheese. read more

It took me awhile to actually find this place after having lived in Allston for about a year or so, but the wait was well worth it. Although the facade of the building facing Cambridge Ave. looks like a corrugated metal shack which has been assaulted by Banksy wannabes, the inside opens up to reveal aisles and aisles full of marvelous imports from Eastern Europe along with various goods straight from the deli or local bakeries. This is a great place to get bread at a decent price- especially if you're into any of the darker rye varieties. There is a passable selection of wine, some of good, some of it dodgy. Do not drink the "champagne," which is usually on sale near the front. All in all, I would advise passing up the booze aisle altogether to go straight to the deli in the back. The folks working behind the counter have always been extremely tolerant of me simply pointing at everything in an excited manner while spouting gibberish; I would typically leave with a few containers stuffed in my bag topped off with kidney bean salads, artichoke salads, and marinated eggplant. They normally have a few meats available to sample as well, so on more than one occasion was I tempted to walk out with an entire side of ham. They also make their own borscht; let it be known that they go easy on the beets, however, so if you're into the deep purplish red stew that I am, it's probably still best to buy your ingredients and make your own. Be forewarned: the desserts glisten like candied jewels from behind the pastry case on your way out (just after the bulk, self-serve chocolate bin and the wine section) so keeping your sinfulness in check while exiting may prove difficult. read more

You don't need to say much about this place: HUGE SELECTION, really good prices, DELICIOUS VEGGIES AND FRUITS at extremely low prices (like a huge box of raspberries under $3 in the middle of winter), lots of goodies and pickles, juices, breads, and frozen goods. Wide variety of meats, cheeses, and candies. The only thing I'd skip: the prepared foods counter -- I make the foods they offer at home; believe me, it's not supposed to look or taste the way it does in this store. :P read more

I ordered catering from Bazaar, and everything looked beautiful and turned out to be delicious. I ordered a fruit plate, and the chef cut the fruit into flowers and it was almost too pretty to eat. The vegetable platter was also delightful, and I was especially impressed with the smoked fish platter. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The blini with red caviar made for a great appetizer, and they were the first thing to go. The cheese plate was also great, featuring a variety of European cheeses. The duck was really the highlight though. It came decorated with apples and purple salad leaves. I will definitely order catering from here again! read more

ALLSTON GEM! Cheaper produce, (routinely get fresh berries and tomatoes,for around $1.50/pint or qt or w/e, for example) and TONs of Russian meats, cheeses, alcohol, breads (they bring in fresh amazing cakes, and bake some of their bread there) dairy, frozen items, pre-made foods, candies, cookies, etc!!! LOVE my trips there with my Ukranian other half who knows the real stuff! Downside: most of the employees speak little English, and look down on ya if your speak it, or if your Russian isn't perfect. But really, who cares? You don't have to hang out with these people, and you can always correct them, ask a passerby to translate, or gesture to make sure you get the right thing. You may feel like an outsider at first, but it's worth it to make that store your own! :) Quick story: went in once witout my Ukranian, and the guy in front of me in line told me (in Russian) he would be right back. I had to explain I didn't speak Russian. So in English he said he would be right back. The woman behind me was giggling, she said I looked Russian. Odd odd situation, but it was kind've awesome.... guess you had to be there.... but where else in Boston can you really be mistaken for a russian so much so that people speak it to you before English? :) read more

I finally came here after reading so much about this place on yelp and always passing it on the 66 bus. I had taken some time off school to go thrift store shopping and decided to stop by. The place is awesome! I come in, and there's a whole shelf of bread, then tons of cheeses (manchego, farmer's cheese, goat cheese, fresh feta, but little on the Italian front). Next to that are these cakes on the next refrigerator aisle, then frozen fish and seafood. There's an AWESOME deli section with smoked and cured meats, fish, and cheeses and a prepared foods deli too. There's a good selection of fruit, though the veggies are a lil less robust. I did however, find a carton of heirloom-like baby tomatoes for under $2! WTF?! AND dried wild mushrooms. What?! There was an awesome candy aisle, but I was surprised that there wasn't an olive bar. OH, and whole freezer cases of frozen Russian ravioli! So awesome! I can't believe I've never made it here. I normally go down to the asian markets, Super 88 and Mirim if I'm down here, but I'll definitely be back. read more

OK, so it was time for a long lunch on Friday... wanted to try something different so a friend and I headed in to Allston to snoop around, Found the Bazaar, never made it to lunch, but we managed to get enough to eat the Bazaar to make lunch and dinner irrelevant. OK, so here's the hard part, if you are looking for this place by street address, you will probably never find it. 424 is kind of wedged in between two commercial businesses and the front has this painted corrugated metal covering, even getting close, it is labeled with some package store's name... But take a chance and walk inside and the world of Russian and Eastern European food awaits.... OMG, I wanted to grab a bottle of vodka and dance with a sturgeon.... By the way, they do have vodka, cold in the fridge and warm for later... They also have a decent selection of caviar locked away in the deli section... and you can by a phone card to call Moscow if you want. Anyway, back to the food...... Every type of canned goods imaginable, bottles of pickled mushrooms, borscht, canned fish, veggies, everything....The smoked fish section and sausage sections are great as well. got some great sausage (kind of like Kielbasa) to take home also some great bacon. They have goose and veal and beef pate's....The bread and pastry section will put you into carbo overload in a minute, but what away to go!....The deli section is unbelievable, I think the selection is pretty static, everything from Chicken Kiev to Kimchee salad...different pancakes and dumplings to pierogi types of dealies (try the meat and potato)... They also have a great selection of cheese as well. Anyway... my friend and I got a selection of items from the deli and went right back to the car and had a picnic... Oh by the way... customers in the know, drive between the commercial buildings and the "main entrance" and parking lot is in the back.. Our only regret was that we didn't by a bottle of chilled vodka, but didn't want to drink and drive... but maybe next time and there will be a next time, and time after that as well. read more

Just up the street from our swank, rich-bitch digs on Denby Road, lies a haven of all things Russian, a very cool small grocery and specialty-food store called Bazaar on Cambridge. They stock all manner of delicious looking foodstuffs and whatnots, with an extensive bottled beer collection on the shelves, and a small cooler of interesting selections. The prices on your usual beer brands run a little high, but look for the six packs of green bottled, blue labeled beer that's called something Russian (for the life of me I don't remember the name) with ring-cap pulls! Tasty. Fresh produce and quality meats and cheeses make this a fun little place to pop into if you're in the neighborhood and want to try something new, or if you're a former Eastern Bloc-er, missing the homeland! Wow. So I've been on a hopeless quest lately, trying to find Morello sour cherry syrup, which is a somewhat key ingredient to a black forest cheesecake I have promised to make for a shindig this weekend. I have looked everywhere, called all over, and the closest I got was a european specialty food store in Walpole that 'usually' carried it but was currently out of stock. I had almost given up when the magic of Google Maps informed me of this Baraar. I called and was told that "certainly" they had sour cherry syrup! I drove out to the place and walked into a wonderland of food!! They get extra bonus points because after I found my prize syrup, I dropped the glass bottle and it spilled all over the floor...I offered to pay for it, but the staff wouldn't hear of it. So nice!! They have an stunning variety of foods, and they're all reasonably priced. It's incredible. I am so excited to go back again! read more

This place is amazing. I felt like I was in Russia even though I've never been there. Basically everything looked delicious and nothing was in English. The best thing is their cake selection. They don't look pretty but they are SO DELICIOUS. Better than konditor meister (check it out, it's still a good cake store). Highly recommend Black Cherry Cake (cherries soaked in delicious liquor and lots of yummy mysterious layers of cream butter and flour-y goodness) and Honey Cake. This place seriously has everything. Next time we are driving a car here and buying kefir, pickled stuff, sausages, pierogis, and smoked fish. MMMmmmmm. Whenever it is time for me to make some Polish food that my grandma used to make, I come by here to get my ingredients. Their house-made sour cream is so fresh and sweet (not bitter, like older creams get) that I just eat it straight on bread. I think that a lot of their produce (although a limited selection) is better than Whole Foods and much cheaper. The middle isle is dedicated to chocolates, coffees and teas. I found a giant (and I mean giant!) jar of my favorite brand of honey. I won't be needing more for a long time. When I did go through the butcher's counter (they have a counter!) I saw a big array of deli products, cheeses and fish. I guess that is nice but I really wanted some ham bones for soup. The bad thing: Long check out lines. Come on people, hurry it up! read more

This store has a good variety of European foods and breads...especially the breads, with relatively decent service. I'm usually ignored while shopping and cashing out, which I do chalk up to a language barrier sometimes, but if I ask a question, I'll at least get an answer, though I have seen them be rude to some customers. Three complaints: 1) I'm Polish...wish you carried more Polish spices and products instead of having to go to the Polish deli in Dorchester b/c its far. 2) Your beer is often flat (I get that you're importing them) 3) I have found NUMEROUS expired products, especially your cakes in the blue boxes in the fridge...including having the dates covered up with a new date, which I'm pretty sure is illegal. I have also found out of code flour and canned fish, just to name a few. read more

I decided to come here when I saw that they have bicycle benefits, where if you have the appropriate sticker on your helmet and bring it in, you get a discount on your purchase. I could see if being possible to get all of your grocery shopping done at this location, but I have never tried. They have produce, staple items and more. I am most impressed with their selection of Russian chocolates and their cheeses are of very gourmet quality. The prices on everything are great too. They have an awesome selection of fresh bakery bread. A lot of the loafs are still warm in the basket. We got a couple loafs. One was similar to a baguette, but with a very firm crust and somewhat hollowed inside. It was only a dollar for the loaf, so I had no complaints about the quality. We also got a super sense, triangular shape loaf that had lots of nuts inside. It was so filling that we definitely got our money's worth from that as well. I picked up a big thing of a fancier olive oil that I usually see more expensive at other places. I also picked up some cheap vodka that turned out to be the most disgusting vodka I have ever tasted. It said that there was cognac and pear wine in it, so I had high ups of something interesting and and fruity notes masking the vodka burn. I was wrong. It smelled like apple cider vinegar, which didn't bother me, but one of us coud taste it through the fiery burn. I try giving it out at parties, and I still have half a bottle left. The unfriendliness of the staff is also of concern, but I brushed that off the shoulder. When I am purchasing things from a store I prefer to be treated with a thanks and come again, but here the cashier was very cold. If you like good customer service or suspect that you may need some help navigating through russian foods, this may not be the place for you. Other than that, I really enjoy this store. read more

I 've heard a lot about this place from my friends. Usually, my friends buy something very unique from this store. Although I live very far from there, I drove to try and buy some stuff. It's not a big store, however, they sell different delicious groceries that you need . I bought some cookies, jam, delli, fruit and frozen fruits. They were all very tasty. Especially, I liked the unique cookies that they have. I should mention that they were very cheap! I should have bought more from them! The only thing that I didn't like was the behavior of the cashier. She was a middle age lady. I don't know if she just work there or she was the owner. The only thing that costumer expect from a cashier (or business owner) is a smile and greeting. Especially for such unique store, it is important. Has this always been owned by the same people who own the Beacon St Brookline International Bazaar, or have they merged recently? I, too, no longer buy deli products (except smoked fish) at the Beacon St store. I once bought 2 small "fresh" truffles for $46--got them home and they smelled like ammonia. Alright, alright, I'm not Russian! Some of the customers here can sniff out Polish descent like bloodhounds, and the incoming glances were just uncomfortable enough to make me feel like I was actually in Russia, but those prices are too good to pass up. Having Russian friends has given me a taste for, among other things, kefir, cabbage pirogi, babaganoush, sour pickles to chase vodka with, and a good deal. All of those things can be found here. The deli counter is my favorite part of the store, with all the goodies pre-made so I don't have to battle my way through cyrillic instructions. After being told off by the woman in front of me on the checkout line for buying pickles from a jar when there are fresh ones in the cold case near the liquor, I went to go try them. Numerous and plentiful varieties of russian/eastern european/caucasian brands and foods. Ranging from jams, to pickles, to cakes and pastries, to a deli (and premade food) to chocolates, teas, breads and cheeses. Seriously, i have never been to such a big russian grocer with so many varieties. They even have a fruit/veggies section. I got the spartak (aka Sparta!!) cake for my birthday. There is a young man who works in the bakery area who wears glasses: he is so nice, polite, friendly and helpful. First time in my life I have purchased candies that had worms inside eating them and a died moth! Beware and pay attention to what you pay money for. I will never go back , this says it all. WOW. Amazing place! The ladies behind the deli counter were so cute/sweet/great! They let me try 2 kielbassas so I could choose which one to get. They were SO great and helpful. The lady that cut a piece of torte for us up front let me come behind the counter to show her how much I wanted which I LOVE. I hate it when other stores will purposely cut you a piece thats way too big so they can just charge you more- not here. They had pretty inexpensive pelemeni (the ones we got were 3.69/lb- they were the loose ones near the deli. We also got some cheap ones in the frozen aisle. I got vareniki as well- potato onion, yum. The cheeses are pretty well prices, and they had some from Russia- I tried some and they were great. The fresh baked bread, I believe it was called "crusty bread" was outrageous. I would say better than Iggys or "When pigs fly" and I love that bread. It was warm and extremely crusty/flavorful. I put the presidents brand of butter that I bought there on it. I will try the other butters next time. The taramasalata was well priced- I will try the russian version next time. The "cirniki" (little cheesecake bites) are great and there are SO many to choose from!! Same go for the tortes. The vegetables are very well priced- 39 cents a lb for cabbage! I am wondering if anyone has tried their pate's and how they are. Pates are my favorite but unless my mom makes them, I havent bought them... I am thrilled to have found this place, and my husband and I have vowed to go there regularly. read more

I always liked Bazaar for their heavenly good cake Napoleon (with "slivochnyi krem"), fresh herbs and tomatoes, delicious deli (grilled vegetables, eggplant "caviar", cabbage Provençal are among my favorite). The service there is always good, girls in deli department are always friendly and smiling, and very fast, as well. Recently I got one more reason to love this store - on New Year evening I left my wallet with significant amount of cash, few major credit cards, and a lot of other personal and valuable information. The owner of the store made every effort to contact me (there was no phone # in the wallet) and let me know, that my wallet was "safe". I got a call from my Credit Card bank and picked my wallet the next day. "Bazaar" is pretty far from my home - 20-25 minutes driving, but I prefer to go there instead of some other Russian stores, that are closer. read more

I am newer to the area and noticed how even along the main stretch here there are several convenience "grocery" shops - but nobody has produce unless you go a little father out. Finally! I have found my ideal spot. This store has heaps of produce that was fresh and of good quality. I was actually taken aback when I went in there. A friend suggested the store to me and I'm so happy she did. I am sitting at my kitchen table now enjoying the produce I scored. Haven't tried anything else there yet- but I'm sure it's good.
