I only ordered for delivery, so this review does not reflect any in store experiences. The online order gave me the option to pick bagel flavors with the caveat that they could be sold out of certain flavors and they would sub with something close. I got 6 bagels and everything came unlabeled. I definitely didn't get what I exactly ordered, which isn't an issue, but they didn't say what they subbed instead. Looking at them, I honestly couldn't tell which was which either. This isn't an issue for me, since I don't have any allergies but I could see how it could be an issue for others. I'm honestly shocked the ratings aren't higher here because I LOVE having Kupel's in the neighborhood. I think the bagels are great, my favorite being the everything (surprising because this seasoning is normally too onion heavy for my taste). I especially love the "day-old" deals. 16 bagels for $8? sign me UP. I thought my sandwich from Kupel's was just ok. Certainly a step up from store-bought but I've had much better, even in the Boston area (Rebelle and Brick Street come to mind). I can't comment on ambiance or service since I ordered delivery. I got a pack of 6 bagels in various flavors, plus a bagel sandwich. The sandwich I ordered was The Arlington, with vegetable cream cheese, lettuce, cucumbers, and capers. I chose an egg everything bagel. Neither the bagel nor the filling tasted very fresh, and the bagel was only seasoned on one side, a pet peeve of mine. I will say the portions were generous and my sandwich was very filling. I haven't tried the other bagels I bought yet so maybe my opinion will change, so I'll update this review if that happens, but I don't have super high hopes... Unfortunately the cinnamon rugelach I got was probably the worst I've ever had - it managed to be both dry on the outside and gummy and underbaked on the inside. It was also very expensive. I ended up throwing it out which I never do. A gluten free brownie looked promising but also ended up being nearly inedible. It had a weird chemical taste that burned my mouth. Apparently everything is parve which essentially means non-dairy. Maybe an OK spot if you're looking to keep kosher but flavor-wise a huge disappointment. read more

Short: bad food could be fixed by good service, but bad service cannot be fixed by great food, more over if it was not delivered. Long: Great bakery. Really good bagels and sandwiches. Unfortunately, the management response to a mistake turned a good experience into a frustrating one. I placed a Grubhub order for half a dozen bagels, lox cream cheese, and a Cleveland Circle sandwich. The food total was $38.47, about 18% more than buying in person, but I was fine with that. After tax, Grubhub fees, and an $8 tip, it added up quickly to over $54. The driver actually arrived early, which was great. But when I opened the bag, the Cleveland Circle sandwich was missing. That was the main item I ordered - everything else was optional. I called Kupel's, and the person who answered sounded agitated right away. I explained that the sandwich was missing and asked if they could make a new one and deliver it. Instead, he said he would just refund the sandwich. He then suggested that if I wanted the sandwich, I could place another order for some bread and he would substitute it with the sandwich and deliver it - sounded like shady casino payouts in Korea. During the call, he also called me rude and processed the credit without really discussing options. The problem is that placing another order means paying Grubhub fees and another driver tip, all because of their mistake. That doesn't feel fair. Years ago, if a pizza place forgot an item, they sent the driver back out. Simple. I still like the food a lot. I just wish the customer service handled the situation better read more

An affordable and delicious spot for bagel sandwiches! Kupels is a very casual grab-and-go bagel stand tucked away near cooldige corner. It was busy on a sunday morning, but it didn't take too long for the sandwiches to come out. I loved the boston theme for all the bagel names. I tried the Park street and the Coolidge Corner. Park street reminded me of sushi in a bagel (in the best way) The coolidge corner was also a classic with lox, red onions, and cream cheese - I also cannot remember the last time I bought a bagel with lox for $12. It's so hard to find a GOOD bagel spot in MA. We were searching for a place that specializes in bagels and Kupel's Bakery popped up. Decided to drive over to Brookline and give them a try today. It did not disappoint! We got two different bagels: Coolidge Corner (smoked salmon with tomatoes, red onions, & chive cream cheese) and the Porter Square (egg whites, avocado, tomato, jalapeño, & garlic herb spread), both on an egg everything bagel. I really enjoyed the Coolidge Corner bagel... I love me some smoked salmon! ***NOTE: Bagels are very thick and one bagel is filling. Next time, will probably get one bagel to share*** Because the bagels are made very thick here (which I do like), they weren't toasted enough, maybe need an extra minute of toasting. We opted for the Coolidge corner, has salmon tomatoes onion garlic herb spread! It was very tasty and fresh! They load you up with the salmon so honestly this one bagel could have been enough for the two of us. I got the porter square which was avocado, egg white, tomatoes and garlic herb spread fantastic. Now the ONLY thing i thought would have made the bagel better is, when you ask for toasted, perhaps have them run it thru their toaster conveyor two times. Ours weren't really toasted and it was eating bagel room temp and no crisp. Will definitely be back. Cost to portion felt worth it. The menu bagel sandwiches are about 8.99-12.99 but you definitely get full. You can get simple bagel and cream cheese for less. Diner style, counter seating and couple small tables. Service at Kupels is extremely slow, with employees wandering around behind the counter without making eye contact with customers. I ordered, and left a 20% tip on the total. I waited. And waited some more. The tables inside were not cleaned. The place cleared out because all the other customers had been served their orders. I was still waiting, unacknowledged. Employees started milling around, and an older man called a meeting. I was still waiting, but it was like I was invisible. No-one paid any attention to me. As they huddled for their meeting, I asked about my bagel. They had 'lost' the order, and despite my being there front and center, no-one thought to ask what I was waiting for. No-one. It was very weird and very rude. Am I invisible because I am not white? Besides that the bagels aren't very good. Meh -1. I think they have it good. I came here on a Saturday morning after playing tennis at the Devotion school courts, and just beat the rush. After ordering, a bunch of people followed behind us so we got lucky! The menu is pretty extensive, and I had tried the lox in the past with very positive results. Today, I felt like going a bit more simple and ordered the Back Bay on a plain bagel. It came with a fried egg, cheese, tomatoes, and red onion. This breakfast sandwich was extremely simple but also extremely fresh and delicious. The bagel itself was nicely toasted and just the right amount of soft, chewy, fluffy, and crunchy on the outside. It definitely surpassed any other bagel I have had recently. On top of that, the cheese added a nice saltiness, the egg was pretty standard, and the amount of onion and tomato was really perfectly balanced. The ratio of all of the ingredients and the fresh bagel turned this from a very simple order into a tasty and unexpected treat. On top of that, the $5.99 price felt very reasonable for a breakfast sandwich of this quality. While their more complicated orders are a bit more pricy, I'll definitely be back for the Back Bay again! read more

I had heard from friends that Kupel's is one of the very few kosher restaurants in Boston, so I was looking forward to trying their offerings. The bakery was bustling around lunch time on a Sunday. The menu is quite fun -- each sandwich is an MBTA stop name colored as its respective MBTA line. But, as I experienced, perhaps the fun naming scheme leads to mixups in making the orders. I ordered the Hynes, which is supposed to have egg salad, lox, tomato, and onion. I ended up having tuna salad in my bagel sandwich instead. The tuna salad was pretty unremarkable. I liked the lox (wish there was more of it), and the bagel was fine. When we went back to ask for the egg salad, they kindly gave us a small tub of egg salad as a replacement. However, I didn't enjoy the egg salad either -- it was not creamy and the egg white pieces were very tiny. I also got the elephant ear pastry, which had some weird discolored speckles on it. One bite that I had tasted like mold, so I ended up tossing it. I wouldn't try their pastries again -- it doesn't seem like they're guaranteed to be fresh. Overall, Kupel's is a very affordable option with a wide array of bagel sandwich combination options. Perhaps too many options...my friend's order got mixed up as well -- it didn't have any of the ingredients it was supposed to have -- and I've heard of more mixups in the past. I think Kupel's is a very important establishment that caters to many dietary restrictions at a reasonable price, and the employees are very nice about making up for wrong orders, but based on my experiences, I probably would not come back. I've lived in Brookline for 5 years and I have to say...I've had it with Kupel's Bakery. The good: the bagel sandwiches are legitimately good. It's not a New York bagel, but they're tasty and the cream cheeses in their selection are flavorful and hit the ascribed notes. The bad: the service here has always been bad and has gotten considerably worse over time. I put in an online order (Saturday) and was given a time 30 minutes later. So we arrive 40 minutes later and our order hasn't been started. Turns out, this is their new MO. None of the other online orders were started until they arrived.... And the line of Uber drivers was looooooong. 1 hour after ordering, we walk out the door. We get home and everything is wrong... again. Word of the wise, only order the prescribed sandwiches. Any alterations will be ignored. Pay to add tomato? You're wasting your money. Don't want capers? Too bad. And the custom order bagels are just always wrong. We ordered egg and cream cheese on a jalapeño bagel. We got cream cheese and jalapeños on an egg bagel. That $2 for the added egg? It's gone now. With all the wrong orders, I've probably lost $20 in add ons. Never again. And while we're at it, all of the pastries taste like Splenda. They look so good and taste sooooo bad.
