We ordered the Ranger, pulled pork sandwich with chips, easy air pilot (I think that's the name), and a rib plate. Good size portions. Good tasting BBQ. The baked beans were okay. I think the hype is from lack of options. I got a pilot plate with two southern staples, Brunswick stew and coleslaw. That is my go to order to see if I will like a place or not and this place fell flat. After my pilot plate I needed rescue. Let's start with positives, price was on point, you can't beat the "hole in the wall" atmosphere, and the ladies behind the counter are sweet as the tea you pour out of the pitcher. Where I feel it suffers is the following. Pork- was chucking/chipped perfectly, the texture was great but the medium sauce looked like thousand island dressing and really lacked a direction of flavor. I got generic BBQ, but no specific heat or sweetness. Coleslaw- was an anemic amalgamation of cabbage pickles and pepper. I'd like to see more color. Maybe a carrot. Brunswick stew- really missed the mark. Thin and missing any texture aside from the corn. I'd like to see more sizable meat chucks. Give me something to sink my teeth into. I'll be back because I don't think a place should be judged on the first try. I'll order three different items next time and try a complete new experience. read more

My husband had us stop in and grab a to go order because he remembered stopping in during his many trips to Benning. He remembered it being really good. Unfortunately it did not live up to his memories and he was left disappointed. I had the pilot plate and the pork was ok, nothing special and drenched in sauce. The sauce had a bit of a mustard taste to it. I'm not a fan of BBQ places drenching their meat in sauce. I want to taste the meat and this sauce overwhelmed it, you need the right balance. Getting to the sides the potato salad was meh, it could have actually used more "dressing". The coleslaw intrigued me because it had dill but unfortunately it was loaded with onions it should have been called onion slaw and lacked any other flavor. This is the PERFECT little BBQ dive joint. No one knows the real name, but the locals call it Fort Mitchell BBQ. You drive up thinking this is just another BBQ place, well you'd be wrong. The real story here is...once upon a time my fiancée was on a skydiving team at the military base across the road (no seriously, across the street is Fort Benning, Georgia; we're on the state line y'all). He loves this place and it was his favorite place to eat when he lived here; we now reside in FL so when we visit friends and family, it's a must stop (and bring home at least 3 pounds to put in the freezer...but I digress). Anyway, he ALWAYS orders the Pilot Plate: half a pound of chopped BBQ pork, baked beans, choice of cole slaw or potato salad and a drink. Well, he gets double beans instead of slaw or salad. AMAZING. Their pork is fall apart tender, and the beans are cooked with jalapeños so there's a nice heat in there. Now the star of the whole joint: the sauce. You could eat it on a shoe and you'd say it was the best thing you've ever eaten. The standard sauce is mustard based; tangy, the slightest hint of sweet, and slap ya mama good. There's also a spicy version of you want a kick in your sauce. I got the BBQ stuffed potato: baked potato the size of my head, stuffed with chopped BBQ pork, cheddar cheese and topped with pickles and that amazing sauce. Basically a BBQ sandwich with a potato as the base. So yummy! The staff are amazing and so sweet, and you're a part of the family when you eat here. It's a funny story how I got to be here, but on a warm dusty Thursday afternoon, I found myself eating....a turkey sandwich... Join the Alabamans and army folk from the Forts and you walk right into a rural bbq joint you couldn't make up if you tried. There was a giant american flag on one wall and a portrait of a dog with a gun and some prey on another. Nice people, good family joint, and simple picnic tables to give you a real sense of a picnic. We had a BBQ plate that included pork ribs over a bed of pork pieces. It comes with a choice of sides, we had the beans and coleslaw. They provide some pieces of bread and an ice tea. The BBQ House out the Back Gate of Ft Benning (airfield) off Hwy 165 surprised me with its BBQ pork and BBQ Coleslaw. I decided to go with the Ranger Plate that comes with BBQ Pork, Pork Ribs, BBQ Slaw and Potato salad. I really enjoyed the sweat taste of the BBQ Slaw which was highly recommended... and the Pork has a great smoked flavor... I thought the Ribs were kind of dry as I am used to the meat falling off the bone, but the flavor was still good. A couple of my buddies tried the BBQ Chicken and said that it was mouth watering... I usually get the Pilot plate with the pork, slaw, beans, extra sauce, and the biggest sweet tea possible. The Ranger Plate comes with ribs additionally instead of substituted.
