They have really cool vegan specials and menu. I appreciate the variety for vegan options on the menu. The best thing I've eaten there has to be their greens and beans burger with vegan chili open faces. So good!! Their food is very tasty! Their bread rocks. I've heard some rumors that their BBQ sauce isn't actually vegan and contains honey. If this is true, they truly need to know that this is not widely recognized as vegan and they should change this or let customers know. I docked a star for the lack of ingredients lists made available to customers and potential lack of transparency. I also docked a little bit because their bean side is not vegan (BBQ without beans is a crime!) and some of their sides are a little on the small side. Still would recommend!! read more

The wife and I started eating vegan about a month ago. This place makes me confident that I could eat vegan the rest of my life. Okay, so I can't say this is the best BBQ I've ever had, but it was fairly decent overall. After reading more of the 5 star reviews I'm beginning to wonder if I'm missing something...but I digress. We were hungry. We went...hog wild. Couldn't resist. Anyway, we did go all out since this was our first time at BBQ4LIFE, so we tried the nachos, a meat sampler, their chili, a sandwich, and dessert. I now have massive pile of leftover meat, so it was totally worth it. Let's break it down. Chili: We tried both the Cincinnati and the Kansas chili. Both were really, really good, and I'd go back for those alone. Try the cornbread in it! Speaking of cornbread, theirs is fabulous and versatile, being a lovely dinner companion or tending toward dessert-like with honey. Yum. Nachos: Cheap chips are cheap. Cheese is that sort of standard nacho cheese you find squeezed out of suspicious looking machines lurking in dark corners of the movie theater. That said, I actually do like this specific type of nacho cheese. It's a classic! Went with the tri-tip. Not bad, but not exploding with flavor, either. Would try again would pulled pork, though. Main Courses: Meat sampler and whatever the heck that sandwich is with macaroni and cheese + pulled pork on French toast. We didn't like the baked beans due to all the veggies, but the Mac and cheese was quite good and did I mention their cornbread is wonderful? We weren't that impressed with the sauces on the table unfortunately, being only a vegan option or corn syrup-y option. They were just 'alright.' Meat itself had good smokey flavor though. My sandwich was amazing and I'd eat the heck out of that thing every day if it weren't such a bad, bad idea. Red Robin wishes it's macaroni and cheese burger was like this. Dessert: Bread pudding and a brownie. Total heaven. No complaints. Service was awesome, very friendly (and smart!) waitress who quickly realized our likes/dislikes based on our questions and made recommendations accordingly. BBQ4LIFE (formerly MFT) is still as good as it gets, when it comes to BBQ. Same great food, same friendly owners, new name and new location!!! Why the name change? To differentiate between the MFT sauces and the restaurant, which are two separate businesses. Why BBQ4LIFE? After owner Brad's knuckle tats, of course! The new location is in a strip mall on Vista. Their still getting settled, with plans to display local artists work on their walls. But, already so much better than their previous location. I hope those who were put off before, will be sure to give them a try now! Food is still amazing! Simple, great tasting BBQ and yummy vegan choices too. Where else can you get a BBQ sandwich and vegan potato salad? My favorite side is the roasted butternut squash. Nachos: delicious! Sweet and spicy all in the same bite. A meal in itself. I love that they create seasonal dishes, to keep customers on their toes with options. On this visit they had: pumpkin bread pudding with pumpkin ice cream (AMAZING!) and pumpkin tacos (they were out, but I bet they were great!). What an awesome find! I moved to Boise a year ago, but prior to living here, I lived in Dallas TX, so I fancy myself somewhat of a BBQ snob. We decided to take a chance on this place, and were so glad we did. After agonizing over what to order, we decided on a number of items in order to get a true sense of the taste. We ordered the half and half sandwich (half brisket half pulled pork), a rib, the beanless chili, corn bread, and mac n cheese. Every item was delicious and I would gladly order again! We topped the meal off with some bread pudding a la mode and left feeling satisfied and content. What more could you ask for out of a BBQ joint? A must try in Boise! read more

OMG - so glad i figured out this place returned! I loved it the one and only time i found it when it was at the roadway inn... I drive vista to the airport after each trip and happened to notice the font one time and was like - heeeeeyyyyy.... I just did take out this time, but gosh is this place so much more inviting. Parking right out front, the inside doesn't look like a re=purposed denny's, but there is still an interesting wall dividing enty/to-go order and the dining room. It all works and you get what you need. I did the tri tip salad - comes with bbq ranch dressing - omg, omg, omg... The tri tip was i remembered - like buttah... wowza! I would definitely request it hot nex t time - i like a little wilt with my salad and meat. Staff was very friendly and welcoming, cheerful and funny. BBQ4LIFE serves up some mighty fine BBQ. The first time I visit any BBQ joint I order the combo plate. We ordered the Half Meat sampler. It was ample in portion with good helpings of pulled pork, three ribs, and sliced tri-tip. Each was really moist and tender with just enough smoke. It comes with one side dish and we added another. We tried the mac n cheese which was mild and creamy, and the potato salad which was not remarkable. The only thing that was a little disappointing was that all the dishes arrived lukewarm or cold and the ice water we were served had a nasty taste. My band was on tour blasting across Idaho after already making it through Wyoming and Utah that same morning when we realized we had yet to stop for food that morning. The scenic drives across the previous two states had been gorgeous but we had hardly passed more than a gas station or two, let alone anywhere to get some food. Our tour manager promised us if we could just make it to Boise we'd be in for a treat, but we were still miles out and driving through a particularly fragrant cow pasture. Then, shining like a mirage in the desert, we pulled into Boise, and there was BBQ4Life. Their menu promised both vegan and traditional barbecue, which sounded perfect for the varying diets in our crew, and the food did not disappoint. Between our whole group we probably ordered about half the menu which we passed around the table. Everything was delicious, and there wasn't a single item I wouldn't consider reordering. Our drive through Idaho was grueling but BBQ4Life certainly made it easier. They even gave our drummer free cake for his birthday! If you're in Boise, there's nowhere I'd recommend to eat over BBQ4Life. read more

I want to start by saying it has been a few months since I have visited this restaurant and I would like to explain why. I hold barbecue to a very strict standard. Good barbecue does not need sauce. Sauce is generally used to hide the pitmasters shortcomings. While I'm not a huge fan of the mft sauce selections, I was pleased to find that their bbq didn't need it. Too many bbq joints use pellet stoves, robbing the meat of the needed bark that is quintessential. BBQ4LIFE has the chops to make great bbq. The meat is fantastic and full of flavor. You can taste the patience and perseverance that goes into this pitmasters trade, slaving away for hours constantly tending to a real fire. I feel as of late, however, the ribs have taken a turn for the sweet side; my guess would be more brown sugar in the rub. Being a savory eater this was not my favorite but perhaps I'm just a little picky. The bread pudding is quite possibly the greatest dessert Boise has to offer. Now onto the reason this isn't a 5 star rating and why I haven't returned in some time. Unfortunately, for me, everything the meat accomplishes is undone by the sides. I have family and friends that do enjoy some of the sides but it is a deal breaker for me. I believe there is room for vegan and healthy sides at this restaurant but I don't want to be forced into it. Barbecue is a passion, a sinful endeavor that I use to treat myself when I want to feel spoiled. My heart warms at the thought of BBQ4LIFE's tri-tip plate with equally sinful sides. Fresh sweet corn that tastes of summer, smashed potatoes, decadent mac and cheese with bread crumb topping for texture, fresh hush puppies, or jalapeño cornbread ushering me to my time in texas. SOUL FOOD. My mouth is already watering just fantasizing about it. A customer like me that knows how to tell if the deckle has rendered enough in a brisket, can taste what type of wood was used, or knows if you used the Texas crutch on your ribs will expect an equally thought out side to go with your fine bbq. ** If sides like these were added to the menu, I would be a CUSTOMER4LIFE.** read more

I can't believe I have not written a review of BBQ4Life before now! I LOVE this place!! Brad and Bre are amazing people and offer the best BBQ experience I've come across in the Boise area. They also make a sincere effort to make sure they have the best staff working for them. The whole BBQ4Life team shines! Okay, so on to the food. The tri tip is my all time favorite here. However, the meatballs and the chili are also staples of mine when I come in for my meat fix. If you like spicy dipping sauces, ask them for a bit of the spicy slaw dressing in which to dip your tri tip. It's a highly addictive combo for those who like the spicy side of life. The ribs are also phenomenal--however, I do ask for mine to be cooked "Jerry style" which means to be cooked a bit longer than competition style. I like my ribs to be super tender and falling off the bone. Brad traditionally cooks them competition style--which makes sense because he does compete in BBQ cookoffs a good bit. So, if you're like me and enjoy fall-off-the-bone tender ribs, be sure to give them a call and ask if they have any that are cooked that way. If they don't have any, they will be glad to cook some up for you--you just may have to give them a few hours. If you're in the mood for a sandwich, I highly recommend the BBQ Philly. It's delicious!! I admit that I rarely get a sandwich when I come here. However, when I do get one, it is the BBQ Philly. The BBQ nachos are also amazing! I like to get the tri tip and pulled pork both on there at the same time. I also tend to be a thorn in their sides and ask for the nachos to be layered instead of having all the meat on top. Of course, if they are super busy, then I may yield to the traditional method of nacho stacking. :-) Regarding desserts, they have some of the best bread pudding I've ever had. They have a few variations of their bread pudding, but the original is my favorite. Love to get it with the salted caramel ice cream when they have that in stock--or vanilla if they don't have the salted caramel--and get a generous helping of caramel drizzled all over the top with a bit of whipped cream to top it off. ;-) The menu has been expanded a good bit since I first started going to Q4Life, but I'm such a creature of habit and know the things I like that I have not tried everything they have to offer. However, knowing Brad and Bre, I'm sure the rest of the menu is just as good as my usuals. If you like BBQ and live in the Boise area, you really should try BBQ4Life!! read more

JUST AWFUL. STAY AWAY!!!! I eat a lot of BBQ including from Texas, Carolinas, bama, Georgia, etc. good southern BBQ so I know what is good and what is scrap. With BBQ in your name, I would expect the meat to be good with some smoke flavor, some nice spices and rubs on the ribs, maybe some char on the exterior of the meat. It was all lacking. The meat had no flavor. We had the tri tip, ribs, and pulled pork. It was all just terrible. It had zero flavor, zero smoke, zero rubs. No taste, no flavor. I didn't even know what I was eating unless I looked at it. To have any flavor at all u need to drown it in sauce. Which by the way, is not BBQ. The tri tip was not juicy, it was dry and had no flavor. We were there on Friday at about 6:30pm , prime supper time. The fries were low quality. The Mac and cheese was average. The tri-tip is my favorite meat of theirs, and the potato salad (non-vegan variety) is my favorite side. The XTRA-Hot BBQ sauce has become one of my all time favorite BBQ sauces. Flavorful, hot, and addicting. The restaurant itself has slowly bettered itself since moving to the Vista location, adding decor slowly over time to the plain-white walls. The service has been consistently friendly and speedy. The fifth star is missing due to the fact that they don't serve french fries. I know that fries are ubiquitous to the Boise area, and can be found anywhere, but one of my all-time favorite meals consists of Ribs, coleslaw, and french fries. To not have a hot pile of fried Idaho spuds next to my ribs is a sad thing for me. Fifth star will come if they were to ever add them to the menu. This is another staple and gem of the Boise Bench. Mac n cheese looked good but was barely warm and with little sauce and little flavor. Friend got the vegan beans and it is basically minestrone without the liquid. Corn bread was dry, honey came in Kraft packets. I got the pulled pork sandwich and for the money there should have been more meat and less dry bread. This place is a pleasant surprise!!! My hubby and I are new to the state and were craving for some barbecue, so we decided to yelp it. Apparently the affordability and the friendliness of the staff won us over, apart from the amazing food. We ordered the full size meat sampler, came with half rack ribs, pulled pork and tri tip, you get a little bit of everything so highly recommend that for couples and groups of friends. The butternut squash with hazelnut on the side was really good too. Also they are extremely generous so be prepared to pack up some leftovers.
