The atmosphere was perfect, but the food was only adequate. I had the house special"Pretzel Chicken" which was tough. The garlic mashed potatoes were watery. My friends had the gumbo and carrot cake which were ordinary. The dinner rolls and the creme brulee were both excellent . About the worst experience I have had at a restraunt. Had a reservation but still waited 50 minutes. Seated but waited 30 minutes. Appetizer came, but no food after a total hour wait after being seated. After the final "yours will be out soon", we got up and left. We were not alone. Everyone was hangry. Our food was poor. The onion soup had no onions and the broth had no flavor. The steak and chicken were tough. Please improve your food! And wash the indoor carpets. The smell is very unpleasant. The best experience here is to sit outside and order drinks until some changes are made. read more

If you are unfortunate enough to live or spend an extended amount of time in Decatur, you will know that we are sorely lacking in culture. Restaurant options are generally limited to greasy spoons or chains of family dining establishments. Fortunately, the Beach House does a pretty good job of breaking out of this pattern, and when you dine there, you might actually forget that you are in Decatur! For those who are familiar with Decatur, you may recognize the location as the former home of Marsha's Waterfront Restaurant. Inside, the decor is pretty much the same as it was back in the Marsha's days. As for the name of the newer establishment: it's not so "beachy," inside as the name would suggest. With the exposed stone and aged wood inside, it feels more like a lodge. However, the views of the lake are amazing. In the winter, you can sit by the windows and look out at the geese on the water, and you almost feel like you're outside. In the summer, there is patio dining available, which makes it even easier to get a table. However, I still prefer to dine indoors, because the chairs are more comfortable. Now for the important part: the food. The food is excellent, without being fussy or pretentious. Most of the dishes are dressed up versions of American classics, but are much improved by the use of fresh, highest quality ingredients. For example, the "mac and cheese" is made more than palatable to adults by the use of a smoky gouda cheese, oven baked to crispy-topped, gooey heaven. The "pretzel chicken" is the Beach House's version of a breaded chicken breast, made with pretzel, topped with a simple but delicious butter sauce drizzle. There is lighter fair available too, such as delicious flatbreads (and yes, there are vegetarian options). The seafood menu is extensive and delicious. Truly gourmet seafood options are available (in addition to the standard options, such as tilapia, salmon, and crab cakes), but you must make reservations and order the higher-dollar seafood entrees 2 days in advance, so that the chef can order them fresh for you. Nothing is frozen. I have heard that their steaks are supreme, but I do not eat red meat, so I have not tried them. However, I have eaten there with groups of people, and all the steak eaters raved about their cuts of meat. Even simple options like burgers and sandwiches are excellent, as well. In addition to the main courses, the desserts are also amazing - IF you can save room for them. The creme brulee and cheesecakes are always perfect for satisfying the sweet tooth, but I have found that I prefer one of their yummy dessert drinks, instead. For grown ups, there is an amazing alternative to a traditional milkshake...and this is not the kind that you can get at Dairy Queen! It's called the Beach House Smoothie, and it is basically a milkshake that is full of booze and Snickers bars. Could there be anything better? But be warned - it packs quite a punch! You won't even feel it coming! Speaking of imbibing, the Beach House is well known for its amazing wine selection. Their wine list is award winning, and their amazing selections are actually pretty reasonably priced. The last time I went there, the wine on special, which was very very good, was $28 a bottle. They also have many beers on tap and in bottles, and they can make any kind of cocktail. In fact, many people come just to enjoy the bar. I would recommend making a reservation, especially for larger parties, or if you are dining on a Friday or Saturday evening. However, I have gone before, at the last minute, and have managed to get a table for 2. You just won't get one with a view of anything but the fish tank. Seriously, this place is great. The service is amazing, the food is great quality, the atmosphere is pleasant (no tzochkes on the wall), and the servers behave the way that upscale servers USED to behave...not calling you "hun" and "dollface" or singing obnoxious happy birthday songs every 5 minutes. If you want someplace where you can dress nicely and enjoy your evening, get excellent fresh food that does not disappoint, or fool out of town guests into thinking that Decatur is not all blue collar Applebee's crap, then the Beach House is your place! read more

The food is pretty good and the prices are reasonable, but their obsession with trying to pass themselves off as a 5 star restaurant when they aren't is a bit much. I went there on a Tuesday afternoon at around 5:20 P.M. and the place was almost empty, yet the hostess kept hounding and chastising me for not making a reservation. Seriously? On a Tuesday afternoon? In a small city? Do they think they're Dorsia or something? After first trying to make me feel guilty, she finally allowed me to sit down, but insisted I eat and leave as fast as possible. 50 minutes later, I had finished eating and the place never came anywhere close to being full during that time period. On one hand, I understand the hostility because Decatur is filled with a lot of disreputable types, but it's completely unacceptable to make anyone feel unwelcome when there's no reason for it. I've been treated with a lot more respect at places far better than this, so it's not something I'll put up with. Check the place out if you enjoy Chicken Sandwiches because they have one of the best in town, but do what I do and get carryout instead of eating inside. read more

In all seriousness, this is one of Central Illinois' best restaurants - it's located on a lake, the food is delicious and the staff is wonderful. There's a lot of "heart and soul" that went into the restaurant, and you can tell that from the minute you walk in to the room. Decatur is not all that nice of a place. It's an industrial city that's slowly dying. Most of the food options in town are unhealthy, greasy and just plain sad. Beach House is none of those things. When I would eat there, I would actually forget that I was in the "Soy City" and to me, that says a lot. My favorite dishes included the mediterranean chicken pita, and their selection of homemade soups. Honestly, there was nothing better than going to Beach House on a cold, rainy day and enjoying a hot meal with friends overlooking the water. This restaurant is one of the few bright spots in Decatur, and I wish it all the very best. read more

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars. The food was good, not amazing like I had expected. I got the mac'n'cheese which I remember being amazing (maybe my taste buds have changed). My husband got a filet which smelled delicious. So as for food at the Beach House I give it a 4.5/5. The biggest problem was the waiter. We were seated by the what looked like the management staff. They were very nice and accommodating. We then waited almost 10 minutes to get our water. We order draft beers which took another few minutes. Though we were ready to order when he brought out our drinks he zipped past and went to another table. After we ordered the wait for our food wasn't too long. Our food came out hot, fresh and delicious. Again, we waited almost 10 minutes after we were done eating to get our bill. We had our bill ready to take but instead our server went to take orders of the table of TEN next to us. It was a little annoying that we had to wait (again) for 10 undecided people to order food. I give our server a 3/5 I was a little surprised of the cost of their draft beers. Probably double the price of most other places in Decatur. I don't mind paying more food the higher quality of food, but I was shocked by the price of beer that is available all over Decatur. The Beach House offers outstanding food and great views of the lake. I hope next time we visit to have better service. read more

We sat outsideand enjoyed the Minneapolis weather --in Decatur, Illinois-the view of the sailboats & lake was very appealing. I've been to Beach House several times but went recently for a work luncheon. The outside area of the Beach House has been completely revamped. It features a large deck, bar area, and lake views. Unfortunately, the renovations haven't quite made their way inside though there are new flat screen televisions and some modern lighting! We started off with the appetizer of the day. It was a spicy queso dip with homemade tortilla chips --- delicious! I ordered the pretzel chicken sandwich with river chips. I was very pleased --- the chips were seasoned well and the breading on the chicken was amazing. It was a HUGE portion. I ended up eating the sandwich without the bun. The chicken was smothered with cheese and onions. The top-notch service really made our experience. DeeDee (sp.) was our waitress and she was very attentive and helpful. My family travels and eats out a great deal on weekends, so when we are home in Decatur, IL, we don't dine out often. Last night, my wife and I decided to have dinner out and chose the Beach House. It was the perfect choice! The crab cakes were an exceptional starter, the house wines palatable, and our meal was truly perfect. Delicious hot rolls, crispy fresh green beans, perfectly garlic-seasoned smashed potatoes, and an ample amount, no less. Seldom can I get a filet mignon of better quality and cooked to perfection anywhere but my own grill at home, yet our steaks were exceptional and worth leaving home for, to say the least. Finally, the dessert selection made it difficult to choose, and we were already getting quite full, so we split a carrot cake made even more remarkable by a bold cup of coffee. On top of a memorable meal, our service was excellent, and we enjoyed the banter with our waitress as we kept an NCAA basketball game silently streaming on my phone at our table. Scallops were awesome! The rest not impressed for the price.... Calamari was like nothing I've ever had or seen, they looked like the biggest chicken strips I've even seen. The waitress assured me it was calamari just a different take. It was so so so awful though way too chewy greasy and hard and no good dipping sauce. The staff was friendly but maybe understaffed or service just slow? I know bread rolls are a freebie but when I asked for a basket for the kids they brought out warmed hamburger buns... Like, Really? I also ordered a margarita The margarita by itself was ok But didn't come out in traditional glass wear with the rim dipped. Came out in a small standard drinking glass. Overall I'd probably come back to just sit and have some oysters overlooking the lake. But I would never come for a full meal again. read more

We had reservations for 7pm had to change to 5pm. They said they could accommodate us. There was 20 of us at 4 different tables but one table took 145 minutes to get our food. One of the tables were on desert already. Talked to manager who was very rude. Some of us were overcharged for our drinks. The worst was I gave our waitress $61.00 for a$55.47 bill and she gave me $5.00 back when I asked for my change she threw a dollar at me and said she was done with me. Nice customer service there. Disappointing anniversary dinner this evening. My entree Chilean Sea Bass was fishy and salty. Mashed potatoes were cold and it was obvious they sat too long prior to being served. Ordered the Lobster Oscar was extremely greasy - floating oil on top of the dish. I cannot recommend this restaurant at all. Mediocre service and had to ask for tobacco and horseradish for oysters as well as refills on drinks. Very disappointing as we had been excited to try. read more

My wife and I ate here last Saturday evening. We were very disappointed. The sea bass was not flaky and was like rubber. It was only lukewarm. I had a hard time cutting it with a knife. The shrimp risotto was a little dry, although I'm no expert as to how moist it should be. It was only lukewarm as well. The table next to us said their food was cold and they didn't eat it and left. First of all I would recommend you make a reservation at this place can be very busy. So far I've been here three or four times and by far the favorite dish is the smoked cheese mac & cheese. Service is great and the ambience in the Overlook view of the lake is phenomenal. Owner walks around and checks on people which gives a comforting homey feel. Out of all the times that I've been here they have only messed up an order once and they ended up taking a percentage off the bill. read more

Was visiting Decatur from out of town and this looked like a cute local place. The menu was okay, a little pricey for what it was but not too much of a big deal. When the food came out the other people at my table and I's overpriced salads were wilted and inedible. I literally had to spit it out. Also, our waiter was extremely rude and condescending. Long story short will not be returning. In addition I overheard an employee tell a group of girls that he appreciated only pretty people coming to the restaurant. Very disappointed again. I ordered one of their simple salads and asked that the dressing not come on the salad. They sent it with the dressing on so I sent it back and they fixed it. But, the chicken on it was supposed to be grilled. It looked and tasted like over cooked baked chicken, so tough, very dry and tastless.
