I expected great Salmon in Alaska, but I didn't expect such a masterful preparation. It was fantastic. I dispensed with the age-old tradition of leaving something for Miss Manners, but that was the only material way I could represent how much I liked it -- they don't accept tips. That also makes the price more reasonable. I had dinner out on the porch and enjoyed the cool evening air. It was magical. The one area where I could ask for improvement is in the tea selection. 3.5 stars! The visitors center in Sitka recommended this new place for a nice dinner. It's like trendy New American artisanal food. They have a lot of seafood on the menu, but there are a couple of non-seafood and vegetarian options. The space is really cute - a little house with a nautical theme. There are octopi painted on the walls, the tables and chairs are mismatched in a charming way. There's outdoor seating, but it was really cold and windy in Sitka when we were there, so we definitely sat inside. We ordered the roasted root vegetables, reindeer sausage with "crushed" potatoes and requested to add salad to that for $3, and a cheddar scallion scone. The scone actually came with a different entree, but we wanted just the scone, and the server said we could do that. But there was confusion over the salad. The menu says you can add on a side salad for $3 to certain entrees, which is what we wanted to do. When I pointed at it the $3 on the menu, the server asked which salad, so I looked at the three salad options and picked the mixed greens. When we got our food, we were surprised to see that the side salad was a full plate of salad. Turns out, the server didn't understand and gave us the full order of salad and charged us the full price. We just let it go and didn't even mention it since we ate the whole thing, even though we were really clear about what we ordered. The food was pretty good - I liked the roasted root veggies (parsnips, carrots, potatoes, fennel), the reindeer sausage was amazing, the crushed potatoes which were pretty much the same as mashed potatoes were tasty, and the cheddar scallion scone was yummy! We also ordered dessert too, which was this ice cream sundae thing that came with a scone, ganache, caramel, and berries. This was just okay and not really worth getting. Overall I liked this place! It's got character and the savory food was good (some of the seafood options sounded really good), but the service, while friendly, could be improved. In addition to messing up the salad part of our order, she also brought us someone else's food (the restaurant was not busy at all) and brought us the check before we had a chance to order dessert. This place was very good!! It had a cool atmosphere, a very friendly and attentive staff, and the food delivered on all cylinders. And don't sleep on their homemade hot sauce, it is mild, and then has a huge kick, with excellent flavor!! If u look through my pictures I outlined everything we ordered. Really good food. Only thing that takes away a star...the enormous BLM sign at the entrance, and the other ones around the restaurant. And im not making a political stance, I'm doing the opposite, I don't want my meal to be politicized. Just like I don't need to go to eat at a restaurant with a huge sign that says "slavery is bad," "don't rape people," or to play the otherside "the election was stolen, build the wall...etc..." I don't want to be politically lectured at my restaurant, whether I agree or disagree with their take on the current political climate. And yes, BLM is recognized as a "political organization," so it is political, not some grass roots movement or casually supportive ideal. What? I'm visiting Sitka for the first time and I get to snag a "first" review?! This place was formerly "The Larkspur Cafe". The building is the same, the chef, owner, and staff are new. It's a historic building down by the water, the ambiance is like that of the coolest coffee shop in a small town. I ordered an Americano (hey, it gets cold in the shade!) and the encrusted cod. The cod was fantastic and they had no quibbles modifying it for my stupid diet. The menu is tight and focused, it has just the right amount of entrees. They don't have wine or WiFi yet, but they are working to get both! Quirk: there is no tipping here! The prices include the tip! This was our first morning in Sitka and we were very hungry so we asked for recommendations for Sunday brunch. Our host at the lodge recommended Beak. When we got there the restaurant was pretty busy but we managed to get seated right away. There was some locals playing some easy listening music so we had some free entertainment throughout our meal. Two of us ordered the reindeer sausage dog with chips and the other two ordered the salmon hash with eggs and bacon. Being from Hawaii we thought that the $13 we paid for a reindeer sausage was a bit much, it was tasty but too costly. The salmon hash was a little disappointing also because there was very little salmon in the hash. To be honest, the meals were tasty but the prices were too high for what we got. This being our first day in Sitka maybe we just weren't familiar with the cost of living here. read more

However, despite the price and and advertisement "fresh caught" I didn't think it was spectacular as compared to other salmon I've had. i was sad to hear that the Larkspur had closed but intrigued when i heard that this local seafood-centric place opened in its stead. came here with a large group on a thursday and we were had an excellent experience! stuff tried: salmon chowder: good and hearty to fortify you on chilly alaskan drizzly evenings! massaged kale salad: holy heck! i am not a die hard kale lover, but this might be the yummiest kale salad ever! candied pecans add a nice sweet crunch money miso black cod tips: served over some barley grain pilaf. so good. i wish there was a bigger portion! i was very sad to hear they had no salmon belly with salmon collar that day which is usually a menu item but its not salmon season so, i will have to come back for that. read more

Nice find in Sitka, Alaska. Small and cozy restaurant with very friendly staff and good food. The menu isn't very large but I'm sure there is something for you (soup, salad, burger, grilled halibut or salmon sandwich, fish, etc). My wife and dropped by Beak during our cruise excursion day and ordered a few plates to share. Note that the place gets busy during cruise season but we were still able to find a seat. The seafood chowder was fantastic. The fish tacos and salmon belly was also tasty (belly was a bit spicy so only order if you like the spice). If you're hungry in Sitka - I would recommend giving Beak a try! read more

What a fortunate find on a cruise ship stop in Sitka! Skipped the tourist traps in favor of this gem...the chef is a 2023 James Beard Semi-Finalist (we did our research after the amazing meal)! The salmon was perfectly seasoned and grilled, and the massaged kale salad will make you wanna eat healthy ALL the time! Loved the on-tap cider and wish I could remember the name of it!! Offering outdoor patio dining service during covid and to-go orders. We had the black cod on rice and saffron carrots, nachos and the Italian sandwich. Lavender soda was good too. The menu is tiny, which I think allows them to source fresh ingredients. The pico de Gallo was made from local tomatoes, which I haven't experienced in Alaska before. Every other restaurant just gets them from Sysco because no one can tell when they get cut up, probably. I'd come back here again. The desert menu is limited to things you can do with ice cream like ice cream sandwiches and coffee poured over ice cream. I'm a cake or pie person myself, so we skipped trying those things. read more

We found this restaurant after getting off the cruise ship, and boy was it amazing! The salmon was out of this world. Ingredients were simple and delicious and the service was kind and attentive. We were excited to eat here as the reviews were good. I will say the staff was friendly. But the food was disappointing. I ordered the fish Taco's that came with a very small amount of fish in each. There was just nothing special about them at all. When we left I was still hungry. The other order was a bowl of their vegetable barley soup. It came in a good size bowl, but where was the soup? This place came highly recommended by several coworkers of mine who visit the area frequently. My overall impression though, didn't live up to the hype. It was billed as some of the best food you'll get, a great example of local cuisine etc etc. What I got was a grilled piece of salmon, that tasted good but the seasoning overwhelmed the flavor of the salmon and a side of diced potatoes fit for a local diner. The price was what I expected, but the service was the real shining star. By the time I ended my meal, I felt like I was part of the team here. Each waiter was checking in on me and chatting with me in their down time. That to me honestly was the true gem here. Will I come back? Having just traveled 14 hrs my wife and I ordered take out from Beaks. I had the halibut from the dinner menu along with the barley soup and a side salad. My wife had the Mac n Cheese. Fine seafood perfectly prepared. We went to celebrate our anniversary, sat outside on the veranda. View is, sadly, not great - overlooking giant fuel tanks above the harbor, and the underside of a highway overpass. But this is a pretty, historical building, and they of course could not move the surroundings. Perfectly cooked fish (I had halibut and my husband ordered black cod) is a challenge to pull off, keeping the thicker part of the fillet just right without overcooking the thinner outside edges. But the chef here did a masterful job. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. First time we had been at a no-gratuities restaurant. We like that. But not sure if the wait staff do. We landed in Sitka and came here for our first meal, which was around lunch time. We got the salmon chowder with cheese scone and reindeer sausage sandwich. Both were very delicious!
