I was so disappointed. I ordered the reindeer sausage which sounded amazing on the menu (and it was; the stone ground mustard, fresh made bun, and from scratch sauerkraut were scrumptious), and my wife ordered the rockfish tacos which were freaking yummy, especially when adorned with the in house Panamanian hot sauce. I thought all was well until the server slapped down a plate of salmon nachos and the table of four next to us erupted into a great white level feeding frenzy. If that wasn't bad enough, another female patron literally swooned over her salmon slab, served sizzling on a cedar plank. Love this place! Everything is always so fresh and tastes really great. I love the atmosphere of the place and all the octopus decorations. It gives it a very local feel and i love that it's on the edge of town by the water. I've been here for both brunch and lunch. Will definitely be back many more times before I move from Sitka! Beak was recommended by a friend who frequents Sitka as a visiting nurse. So glad we took her suggestion! Had the Coho, mash and garlic scapes. The first time we have been asked how we wanted our salmon (rare, medium rare, etc.). It was cooked to absolute perfection at medium rare! Still dreaming about the smoked salmon chowder and cheddar scone. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. Excellent king salmon slab and rockfish tacos. Kale salad was surprisingly good, especially if you think you've had enough kale salad for one lifetime. Gratuity is included in price, so no need to calculate at the end. Friendly, attentive wait staff. We sat down at the last open table for lunch and were prepared for a long wait, but we were approached immediately with menus and got our food pretty quickly after ordering. on a cruise through alaska, we docked in sitka. beak was one of the only restaurants still open so we stopped in to have a bite. it's located on the ground floor of a two story building that resembles a house. there is also a local radio station that resides there. the food, as you can imagine, is like home cooked fare. the folks that run it are kind and friendly. they make a good cup of joe. we had a variety of dishes - black cod tips, cedar plank salmon, and salmon chowder. everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. if you ever find yourself in sitka, give beak a try. read more

We went to Beak twice the past weekend. The first time, I had the rockfish tacos. While nicely presented, they were a bit bland. When asked, the server/husband of the chef brought some habanero aioli. That helped a lot. During an evening visit, I had black cod tips (collar, I'm told) with noodles. The tips were tasty but needed to marinate longer, as the flavor had not spread to the middle. The noodles were super bland; the spicy aioli helped, but they should have had more sauce and flavor. My wife's dish had cooked barley on it, but that too lacked flavor. There is a basis of talent with room for improvement. read more

Beak Restaurant was our introduction to Sitka and it made quite the impression. From the moment we stepped on the porch we felt at home, even though home is 1,800 miles away and nearly twice the temperature. We were pleasantly greeted and offered our choice of tables at which to sit. Since it was a lovely day we chose to sit outside on the porch. It was nice to be in the fresh air after spending the morning packed in airplanes. Our attentive waitress took our drink order and quickly returned with our drinks and to take our food order. My wife and I split the fish tacos (with one additional taco added) and I also had the salmon chowder. In what seemed a short time our food arrived. I have never had salmon chowder before so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was amazing. I don't remember ever enjoying a cup of soup as much as I enjoyed that one. The fish tacos were just as satisfying. The fish (rock fish I believe) was cooked perfectly and combined with the crisp cabbage, fresh pico de gallo and lime crema blanca made for what are some of the best fish tacos I have ever eaten. I do recommend adding Beak's own aioli and their habanero sauce. This was a wonderful lunch. I know that this is a lot of words to say that I highly recommend Beak Restaurant, but I feel they deserve more than "it's a great place to eat." I enjoyed every aspect of having lunch here, the setting, the people, the food, everything. Thank you, Beak Restaurant, for making something as simple as lunch so memorable. read more

An enjoyable treat. This Be Alaska comfort food restaurant offered well prepared basic meals in a family local setting. The live music (piano) was enjoyable. The staff was frendly, and spot on with assistance and menu suggestions. The house salmon chowder was harty, along with the mac n cheese with salmon. The fresh made fruit scone with ice cream and berries was a nice desert. The no gratuity or tip was welcome. The service was not impacted by this, potential improved. The wait staff was great and I took it they were comfortable with a potentially living wage restaurant as they were having a good time. Coming from the lower 48, the menu is a bit short, but both the town and the restaurant are also on the small side, and what they do have, they do quite well. The menu is thoughtful, the dishes well-prepared, and they are quite open to modifications such as adding or subbing sides. Possibly one of the only but certainly few acceptable places to eat on the island. (I do also have to give kudos to the tamale lady selling street side. They were overpriced but darn good tamales.) Beak has Fresh seafood, good craft beer, and a locally sourced menu. It is one of the few places that isn't a tourist trap on the island trying to sell overpriced pre frozen appetizers from a major pre-fab food distributor that starts with the letters S and Y. (We landed at Beak after being smart and giving up after trying an appetizer at another popular "up-scale" advertised restaurant that was $20 for 5 bites of not scratch made pre-frozen disappointment) Beak has a laid back character and what you are looking for assuming you want a quality, scratch made local Alaskan meal. read more

We saw everywhere that this was the place to go and even had a recommendation from the visitor center. We grabbed a table and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a Latte. The latte was undrinkable. I'm not sure what happened because it was made fresh but it was terrible. We shared the AP. My partner was excited to get the Salmon Chowder and Scone. The scone was awesome but the chowder was on the same level as the coffee - almost inedible. It as super thick to the point of being solid rather than a chowder. It tasted like raw flour with bits of fish and it was luke-warm. Yuck. I ordered the three Rockfish Tacos and was asked if I wanted to add a fourth. I stuck with the three and when they arrived, realized why the push for the fourth. They're really small - like 2-3 bites each but they were really good. I tried to get my partner to have one but she really liked the scone so we decided to call it and skip dessert. I'm not sure the draw is to Be AK but we couldn't find it. Maybe we didn't order the right thing or maybe it's more of a dinner place but it's small and doesn't seem like a dinner place. This place used to be Larkspur Cafe, as of 2 weeks ago, it is now Beak Restaurant. It is a cute little cafe with great food, superb service and no gratuity. There are a few seats outside on the patio and more inside. We had the black cod tips (recommended by our cab driver, Hank) and the seared salmon over a carrot purée. Both were amazing, enough to satisfy, but not so much that you feel stuffed. Cooked to perfection. I eat a lot of Salmon, but seared salmon with root veggies and carrot purée sounded so good that I couldn't resist. I'm so glad I didn't! Everything was great, even the sparkling cucumber water hit the spot. In a few weeks they should have some booze available too. read more

A small place with a short menu, but you will probably leave smiling. I enjoyed the reindeer sausage (lots like polish sausage), and salmon chowder. My wife liked the rockfish tacos and salad, and my daughter had coho salmon, all very well done. We had to wait for a table to clear, but it was worth it. Several impromptu musicians added ambience. This place came highly recommended. Maybe our expectations was a problem here, but if this is one of the best restaurants in Sitka what should we expect from other less rated places? Alaska is all about fish. It should be plentiful and flavorful. There is no need to drown a good fish it in some sweet sauce. The portions at these prices were small. Be prepared to go looking for pizza after dinner, especially if you did some walking before hand. The wine was pretty good but because of the lack of food, we could not finish our bottle and wanted to take it back to the hotel. We were told that this is not an option. I wish we knew the rules before we ordered. I would stick with a glass. Overall, I would not recommend this place. But then again, there is a possibility all other places even worse. read more

My Mom and I really enjoyed our evening at Beak the night before our small passenger Alaska Dream Cruise departed Sitka. We were delighted by the live folk music. The food was terrific. I especially enjoyed the salmon belly. I would not order the "everything-encrusted" cod again. I didn't quite realize it would be encrusted in everything bagel seasoning until it hit my table, and for me that is more robust than I prefer for a light piece of fish. But it was definitely well-prepared. The service was warm and welcoming. We felt very positively about the no-tipping approach. I wish more restaurant owners would adopt this practice, so employees can be guaranteed a fair wage. One might expect service to suffer as a result, but we saw no evidence of that. Excellent salmon chowder, perfectly cooked salmon and black cod, great dessert with local berries. Two complaints - the entree plates were not well balanced - no vegetable besides starch. I know they cant grow tomatoes in sitka, but I think they can grow something vegetal. Second, the price of the salmon dishes was awfully high. We went salmon fishing and heard what the price per pound is locally. The price of a salmon entree was the same as for Alaskan king salmon entree in Boston (not farmed). However, even though of did that did had the same items, we all enjoyed he food. The service was great too. As a larger party, we had to eat inside. I came to the Beak a few times during a week and a half stay in Sitka. Every time I was impressed with the food and the service. The salmon chowder was delicious, as was the reindeer sausage. I had a mimosa on the deck one beautiful sunny day and loved the way they served it - with the remaining champagne in the petite bottle to self-refill my mason jar of juice as I drank it. The location is right on the edge of town and easy to find. The Beak is certainly one of my favorite lunch spots in Sitka! I did not have the chance to dine here for dinner or weekend brunch - but I would expect to have the same review for those meals as well! read more
