Walked by this little coffee shop and wanted to try it so we came back this morning. First of all, it's a really cute place, but pretty small and squishy. Waiting in line with people squeezing past you to get in and out was a little uncomfortable. But the baristas were nice and seemed efficient! I ordered an iced latte with oat milk, no sweetener. I usually always order this when trying a new coffee place as sort of a benchmark test. My latte was good, but nothing special. The downside is they charged me an extra $1.50 for oatmilk, which I thought was ridiculous. Most of my favorite coffee shops charge 50 cents $1 max. (Side tangent: it kinda bothers me when coffee shops try to profit off milk alternatives, as they are often cheaper than cows milk these days). There was lots of seating outside, which is great, but I decided to take my coffee to go. Overall, it's good, but I'm not impressed. I might come back if I'm in the area, but there's better coffee shops in Kaimuki in my opinion. read more

It is a tiny and tucked-away coffee shop that offers a variety of coffee drinks and other treats. But, as with similar reviews, I am here for the pour-over! Their lineup primarily highlights Kona and Ka'u coffees with some seasonal offerings from other islands. I got their Kona Red Bourbon, and for a medium roast, the flavor profile packed the punch as a light roast. It was very smooth and fruity, with highlighted notes of strawberry and guava. If I had not opened so many coffee bags at home, I definitely would have bought one. If you're more of the less adventurous type when seeking great pour-over coffee, this place is for you. My mom stumbled upon this quaint little coffee shop on one of her adventures so off course we had to come back. The iced chai latte are is very good, gives a nice strong chai flavor. Ordered my daughter a scone as well which they even offer to warm up. This place was small but so cute and when in the area I'd come back. read more

(kinda) hidden gem! The shop itself is quite small inside with just enough space to order and wait. Not sure if there were parking for us in the back but we park across the street and walked over. The barista was nice and helpful. We both got a "shakarato latte" - iced espresso latte with your choice of milk. Alternative milk is extra $1 and each syrup is 75c. We got vanilla latte and caramel lavender latte, both with oat milk. Drinks were good! We both enjoyed what we got. Would come back to try the pastries as well :3 read more

What a treat to be introduced to this little gem of a coffee shop! Thanks Yelp CM Jess for the awesome when on Waialae collection for the intro. Came with the hubby on a Saturday afternoon and was greeted by the two friendly staff behind the counter. Ordered a mocha, matcha with honey, brie and fig baguette, and a canele. The mocha was very chocolatey, just the way hubby likes it. The barrista made a beautiful design but quickly covered it with a top to which I scolded her that her art should be appreciated and removed the lid to take a pic. My matcha was unsweetened so I asked to add honey. I couldn't taste the honey at all but still enjoyed the deep matcha flavor. This also had a beautiful foam work of art that I was able to snap a pic of before the lid went on. The canele was very yummy! Just subtly sweet with a texture that I could only describe as a mix between mochi and custard. It was also buttery and perfect warmed up. The brie and fig baguette was a little over "toasted" and had a bitterness to it. I believe had it been toasted properly it would have been delicious. Overall I would return for the friendly service and beautifully designed coffee works of art, and of course more of those yummy caneles! read more

I first discovered Bean About Town at the holiday Kaka'ako Night Market back in November. It was love at first espresso! Fast forward to summer 2023 and I'm finally getting around to visiting their brick and mortar location in Kaimuki. First off...the location could not be more charming. Tucked under a staircase, in a small but well appointed space, they have made excellent use of every square foot they have in their Waialae Ave address. It feels local but well executed. But you're coming for the coffee right? BAT does NOT disappoint. Locally roasted European style coffee beans. The quality is excellent...and I would say one of..if not the best coffee roasters on the island. The baristas are friendly, super knowledgeable and will steer you to make the best choice for whatever your coffee habit requires...be it iced pour-over to double shots of espresso (which...by the way...is how God intended you to drink coffee. Anything else is a SIN!). Lastly...can we talk about the Canele of Bordeaux? The little French pastry that BAT always has available. It's sheer wizardry! Had a really awesome visit here! We were exploring around Kaimuki and stopped here for coffee and a snack. The aesthetic of the shop was really cute and they had a bunch of coffee beans and coffee gear that you could buy. The baristas were really friendly and answered all of our questions about the menu and about the coffee for sale. We ordered a shakarato with oat milk and a pump of macadamia nut flavor, a macchiato with macadamia nut milk, a butter mochi waffle, and a canele; and we snagged a tube of coffee beans to try later. Everything came out pretty quick and we sat outside in their cute seating area. The macchiato didn't foam up a lot because of the macadamia nut milk, but the espresso had good flavor. The shakarato was their take on a shaken espresso from Starbucks, and it was really good. Great balance of espresso, milk, and a hint of flavor. The mochi waffle was chewy on the inside and crunchy on the outside; and the canele was sweet and moist. We definitely recommend coming here! On top of a great spot for good coffee and treats, they are also environmentally friendly. read more

The cutest lil coffee shop in Kaimuki (well, okay one of three lol we love you Coffee Talk & The Curb haha) I was inclined to come here after we visited Poai by Pono Potions in Chinatown and they were serving the Maddie4Matcha with their Lavender Syrup. We heard that exact same matcha drink was from Bean about town, so we came to experience it at the OG location. We also got a Iced Chai Latte and canele (that the worker gave to us for free because they had just finished a photoshoot with it so it didn't look as pretty, so sweet T^T) the Maddie4Matcha was super tasty and just like we remember from Poai. the matcha flavor is very prominent without being too sweet or bitter. my Chai Latte (with oat milk!) was super creamy and had the perfect amount of chai spices. the canele didn't taste like rum which I loved, and the inside was soft and custardy as it should be, but I wish there was more of a strong caramelization on the outside. the outdoor seating area is absolutely adorable and there's free parking in their lot! read more

Cute little shop tucked in the streets of Kaimuki/Waialae Ave. I came in here 2-3 years ago where the barista was still the owner! I think he was French (based on his accent) and he was so knowledgeable with coffee! He made me realize that coffee is an art, a way of preserving history, and something to enjoy! Until this day, the new baristas are fully of energy even if they just opened at like 7am. If you loved ICED COFFEE or ICED LATTE, get the shakarato! They also support local businesses like Pono Potions for their syrups. On the side, they give away free metal straws to encourage everyone to minimize single use straws. If not the metal straws, you can grab their sturdy nice recyclable paper straws. Their cannele is the best! I am not really sure what it is but it's worth trying and best to enjoy with coffee. read more

Bean about town is going to be my go to place to grab coffee. I can't believe I've taken this long to get coffee from here! Oh, what I've been missing!! This place is located in Kaimuki along Waialae Ave between 10th Ave and Sierra Dr in Nobu's Park Center Building, right across from Super Pho. Just turn into the driveway as there's a few public parking spaces available. It's a small little coffee shop with outdoor seating, including a curb side table. It offers a variety of sandwiches, sweet baked items, smoothies, iced tea, and a variety of coffee blends and drinks. I like the variety of coffee blends that other coffee places don't offer. Most of them offers the usual stuff. Here, there's beans from Nicaragua, Brazil, Oaxaca, Mexico, Panama, Ethiopia, Colombia, and of course, beans from Hawaii. They roast their own coffee, which is great as you can experience it's full flavor and peak freshness. The ladies working here are very friendly, personable, helpful, and positive. The one who helped me was very informative and knows her coffee. I went with the Brazil coffee, pour over. I've never had much luck with poured over coffee as they tend to be light, but not here! I immediately noticed the freshness and smoothness of the coffee. It had a bittersweet, slightly acidic taste and a nutty, sweet, chocolaty finish. Finally! A coffee where I can actually taste a balance of flavors. Overall, an excellent place to grab a cup of coffee with free parking, a nice variety of coffee, food, and drinks, great customer service, and did I mention the superb coffee? My partner went to the store to pick up some good coffee beans to bring back from Hawaii. I asked her to get the best they had, which were $100/lb. Unbelievably, the bags had no printed roast date, and when she asked about it, she was told they were maybe "a week and a half" old. Also, they tried to school her that a recent roast date isn't important, and that beans are fresh for 3 months. For a "gourmet" roaster, they should know neither of these things are true. This is the first roaster I've ever heard of that doesn't date their bags, so they're hardly worth the price. I'll find a better place next time. read more

Decided to try this place out yesterday morning since I felt like I needed some good coffee. It's also up the street from where I live#support small business. There was a list of syrups on the counter that had a few interesting flavors. The one that caught my eye was the butterscotch bourbon. Previously i was thinking to get a mac nut latte, but that sounds too plain. I've had liquor in coffee before so decided to try it after asking the cashier about it. She said to her surprise that's its getting popular. Cashier was nice and told me if I had any questions I could ask her. Didn't really have to wait long for my latte and croque monsieur. I decided to get the croque monsieur since they didnt have the fig and brie. They call out your order;gotta wait outside since inside is small. But they have some seating facing Waialae Ave. My latte came first then the cashier told me it would take a couple minutes for the croque monsieur to be done. The latte was hot and smooth. Im guessing the smoothness/buttery notes was from the butterscotch. Couldn't really taste the bourbon, but just sipping on it while people/car watching was nice. I wish the croque monsieur was bigger. The swiss cheese was melty, ham was good, the bread was rustic, crunchy, a little buttery and I think sourdough which is different from the one I had a different place where regular white bread was used. There was some seasoning on the cheese/ham which was a nice touch and it came with a little pickle. This place had also other bits of food to try, saw they had different types of waffles which I may want to try next time or the canele. read more

What a beautiful cheerful start to my morning to be greeted by a fun friendly staff to wash away yesterday and begin with a breakfast of champions...coffee!!! Their menu is different from what I'm used to to seeing probably is because it's European style coffees...oooo! No worries the ultra friendly ladies is amazingly helpful to answer every question so the only problems are the decision you need to make. I got the Shakarato, it's a shaken (not stirred) latte :D which creates a nice frothy foam on top...Ooooo! and Oh my goodness what a gentle, smooth, delightful cup to wake myself up after a long work weekend, it may be Monday but it's now MY weekend and this cup of heaven is just what I needed. bean about town Kaimuki is located on Waialae across from Kaimuki Community Park, plenty of free easy parking in the back there's also a bench right outside if you just want a quick sip break if you were strolling around Kaimuki. Love this artisan coffee shop in Kaimuki! It's a vibey tiny shop more for grab and go. I'm usually in a rush to work, so their online ordering is particularly helpful. I've tried their latte and matcha latte, both classic and good. I've tried all of their yummy scones, and strawberry is my favorite. My absolute favorite are their Ulu Muffins. Little cups of heaven. Been wanting to try this cute Kaimuki coffee shop for a while now but never managed to make it until today! We were able to snag a spot in the parking lot behind the cafe and perused the collection of coffee beans (sold in bags or tubes) lining the shelves while we waited for our shakaratos (shaken iced lattes). The baristas were kind and energetic, shaking our drinks to the beat of the lively music and dancing to try to earn a smile from the baby. The shakaratos were foamy, refreshing and strong, perfect for a warm Hawaiian afternoon. There's also a nice shady seating area right outside the cafe, though not the most spacious for our stroller. We came here after a fun morning surf session, and dropped by for some morning energy! Best choice ever!! We ended up ordering some of the ulu bread, the canele (ugh so delicious. love the custardy inside!) as well as the coffee! The barista was kind enough to tell me that macadamia nut doesn't foam well, so she recommended me the oat. I went with her rec and got a Cappuccino, and not to be dramatic or anything but that was the best capo' I've ever had. SO creamy, foamy, and satisfying!!! I like that they make you wait outside after you order! We stan a cafe with healthy safety guidelines. Great coffee experience paired with an awesome French pastry that is too complex for me to try and bake! We ordered 2 flat whites with mac nut syrup and caneles for pick-up while leaving Paki park (near the zoo, across the street from the giraffes' house). It took less than 8 minutes to drive over. As others have pointed out, the parking was super convenient (just make sure to avoid parking in the tenant-only spots). The kiddos and I waited in the car while my partner waited for our order outside/completed the pick-up. He said everyone inside was very nice. The order was ready per the online time. I appreciate them limiting the amount of customers that can go inside the small store (1 household at a time). The caneles smelled heavenly without even opening the container. Both of us really enjoyed the flat whites, which were very smooth with minimal foam and just the right amount of mac nut syrup (to add a subtle flavor without a sugary aftertaste). I've never been to France, but have read about caneles - which seem pretty difficult to perfect. Although their caneles aren't quite how the completed bake is described, none of use cared because these were super delicious! All 6 were eaten pretty quickly. Aside from the great coffee, I would honestly go back just to grab more caneles... Yes, I go to Starbucks like every other day. People assume I just love coffee that much. I honestly don't though. I just like drinking something as like a pick me up. It's my crutch when I'm having rough days, which is apparently every other day. Starbucks coffee is trash compared to bean about town. Idk, I'm definitely not a connoisseur of coffee (although my Starbucks habits may confuse people), so I have no idea what makes this coffee so good. You'll just have to try it out yourself!! Bean about town is really close to where I work on Sundays and I was wandering around Waialae looking for a coffee. I was actually tempted to go to super pho (next door) to get a Vietnamese iced coffee, when I saw that bean about town was open and there were plenty of people outside, chilling, enjoying their coffees. I ordered a shakarato or whatever it's called which is just espresso and whole milk, shaken, over ice. For $5 it was a bit more expensive than Starbucks, but it was maybe the best coffee I've had in a long time. The two people working were nice and my drink was made super quick. I'm not all that into pastries, but I did notice they have Brie and fig baguettes, which I will definitely need to come back for. I'm already thinking about getting coffee here again next week because I downed my coffee in 2 minutes even though I wanted to savor it. I'm not really sure what the parking situation is like, since I walk from work, but there is street parking on Waialae. If you're desperate, you could park in the pay lot behind happy day for $0.75 per hour. read more

TL:DR - Good coffee and very environmentally conscious While walking through Kaimuki, I had a hankering for a coffee and so stopped in Bean About Town Honolulu. It's a small shop right next to the 7-11, it's a little hard to find. They offer a variety of coffee drinks and some pastries. I got an iced americano and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. It was a little bit more on the acidic side, but had a smooth finish. They offered both metal straws and paper straws, along with a bunch of other environmentally conscious utensils. Moody Monday mornings call for trips to Kaimuki where I like to set up my WFH camp and spend all morning tuning out the world and enjoying my cannelés. Shout out to the friendly and upbeat baristas that truly bring sunshine to my day every time I visit. On a most recent trip to Bean about town, I treated myself to a mocha latte and cannelés as I parked my butt at one of their outdoor tables. There's something so soothing about the traffic in Kaimuki that really helps me to focus on getting my work done. Add to that the calm and relaxing jazz music that is played over the speakers and I swear I could spend all day here. I'm no coffee connoisseur but the freshly roasted beans from this place is the cherry on top to starting your day off on the right foot. The coffee here is great and their wide variety of baked goods and snacks only add to the immense amount of character this tiny coffee shop is exploding with. Went on and brunch date today with the hubby. I am very deliberate about where I choose to eat and drink because the mister is a Bona-fide Workaholic! He just doesn't care about going out to eat - he isn't a foodie and it is few and far between that he REMEMBERS a meal. So I try to make sure it is amazing for Me ;) and hope he has a good experience as well. Okay so all this to say, I pick a food place and I pick a coffee place because well, they are my second and third loves (behind the hubby lol!). I wanted a Shakarato and a cannales from Bean. I ordered and stepped back outside to make way for others (tiny space). We waited a few minutes and hubby went back in to collect my order. He carried the drink and handed me the treat. We parked a block away and walked back to the car and headed back downtown toward our apartment. We were getting in H1 when I finally picked up my drink and realized it wasn't the Shakarato! Nooooo!!!!! I attempted to call them to see if we could swing back around and trade out but no answer! I took a sip - super bitter, NOT CREAMY at all. Basically terrible. Hubby likes plain coffee so I offered it to him. He took a sip and said, "That's terrible!". Well darn! The man who doesn't really care much about taste wouldn't even drink it. So sadly, I'm out $5 for a terrible drink. I'll try to stop back in when I'm back over that way. The fact that the barista had made the wrong drink for the person in front of me didn't cross my mind until I realized that I had gotten the wrong drink too. :( read more

The baristsas' energies were a pick me up already right when I walked through the door. They were both so friendly and made great recommendations. I have always wanted to try this place but I always went by when they were already closed so I was so happy to finally get there when the cafe was open. I ended up getting their iced matcha latte. The barista had quickly shared that the matcha is 100% unsweetened and asked if I would like to add any sweeteners. Then recommended to add honey since that's what she does. I went with it and the latte was great! Nice flavors and still slightly bitter without being overwhelming. I couldn't taste the honey, but I know I wouldn't have liked it unsweetened. My latte came with a paper straw. Super fast service. I ended up paying over $6 for my drink with tip, but I say worth it for a pleasant Kaimuki business. read more
