Food Good Coffee OK Service Poor for this reason. We had point cards from making purchases. When we came to redeem them, they said we can't because of Covid. WHAT? because of some virus they can't honor coffee points which represents patronage! For this VERY reason, I refuse and tell others to skip this place. Other restaurants and cafes continue to honor their points before and after the virus shutdown. But because they are so stingy and cheap, they had to not care about their loyal customers. There are many people I've talked to who are spreading the word. Now we go to the other cafes on the street. I will change this review as soon as I'm written back by the owners that EVERYONE with point cards can come back and redeem their free coffee, etc. Until now, they are STINGY and not worth going to. A great cafe next to city hall and the local theatre. Great list of both coffee drinks and tea. Lots of food choices as well such as sandwiches and chicken bake. Don't get why for the low ratings. It's a perfect place especially if there is a show next door. Also the service is excellent as it is quick unlike other places like Red Rock. I'm going to give a 4 star for kind, prompt service. The barista who helped me and my friend was very nice . I docked one star only because the specific drink I ordered didn't feel worth $6.25 to me: the Chai Chiller Freeze (I think that's the name of it). I love chai and have never had it blended so that sounded good however while I could taste the chai the way this frappe type drink was made , it wasn't that appealing only because the texture of it was mainly ice once the chai is gone if that makes sense. A lot of frappes can be made where you can drink the entire thing ; I was unable to because it was mainly ice chunks by the end. However, I'm not going to give a low rating because there are many other drinks and items on the menu I have yet to try . I love trying new cafes and I look forward to returning :) read more

Super convenient, located right near the Performing Arts Center at the Mountain View downtown and is always open during performances. There is a large variety of options, and I particularly like that many of them are savory, such as the quiches, tamales, lasagna, and several others. I particularly love the empanadas here, they are big and soft, some of the best I've had so far. Rude owner. Mountain View's summer Friday concerts bring hundreds of people, at taxpayer expense, to just a few steps from Bean Scene. This could be a bonanza if the owner handled it right. Instead, during concerts, he repeatedly runs out shouting at passersby to get off the steps in front of his shop. He doesn't own those steps -- they are a public space -- but if he really wants to wall off a public space, why not put up cones or ropes, instead of shouting at potential customers? Why not hand out coupons to the hundreds of potential customers that are standing a few feet away during the dinner hour? It's so foolish and counterproductive. Business 101. read more

It's my first time trying this local small cafe but it was a very bad experience. The staff is impatient taking my order even though I'm the only customer in the cafe. The croissant is dry and sad and tasteless. I asked her for a cup of warm water and she gave me tap water straight from the tap. She had an attitude that made it feel like she had more important things to do and I as a customer was inconveniencing her. I asked her for a receipt and it seems that it even bothers her more despite none else being in the cafe. Artichoke Quiche: tasted good, but food temperature was terrible. I liked that the artichoke hearts were finely chopped up (no chunks). That said, one side of the quiche was pipping hot, the other stone cold. They admitted to warming it up in a microwave; I observed their microwave ovens were very small, so most likely they did not have rotating trays to evenly distribute the heat. Poor little boy had to go to the bathroom so bad, and the two employees, could have very easily let us use the bathroom, but instead, they (for whatever reason) CHOSE to not let us use it. The location of this cafe spot is really nice it is located inside a theater so it's a convenient spot. Also nice patio area outside. Not a great experience, they do have a lot of variety on their menu but the coffee has no flavor and not worth the penny. Customer service is horrible. Coming here first time the gentleman over the counter asked if I was here for the play I asked what kind of play is going on here his response was very rude and avoided the question saying your not here for the play then. Absolutely disappointed by the customer service of Bean Scene Cafe and lack of general concern for us local patrons. Located at the Center of the Performing Arts near City Hall, the plaza is near empty of people. It's high noon on a sunny day mid week, and I figured I could sit in the shade for a minute. Within that time, a man from the Cafe came out to inform me and others that these are private tables and there's no outside food or drinks. I'd understand if the plaza was packed or there were tons of folks looking for seating, but there's no one there... what's more, this guy had the audacity to do the same thing to two other gentleman, one of whom was elderly and had taken a break from a stroll. THE TABLES WITH BLUE UMBRELLAS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME... WHY WOULD HALF OF THEM BE PRIVATE AND THE OTHER HALF PUBLIC?! I used to buy my drinks/snacks from here during evenings when I'd attend a Mountain View Council meeting or see an event at the Performing Arts center, but I rather support a business that actually cares about the city's patrons or residents. Please avoid this business at all costs and visit another one of the other cafes with actual quality food along Castro. Usually, I don't bother to log on to say if a place has mediocre food, but is well-intentioned, but couple your sub-par food with poor care for basic concern for others, and one star is still too good for you. I would give this place a negative five star if I could. This place is incredibly rude to breastfeeding mothers. It was a super hot day 90 degrees. So I stopped in for a smoothie and a place to feed my 6 month old daughter. My entire family bought drinks and tipped well. I had brought my own snack because I had severe food allergies and needed food in order to FEED MY DAUGHTER. The owner came over and asked me to remove my food from their establishment. I explained my situation to the owner. He said" in the future you need to let us know in advance". the female standing next to him at the cash register shook her head at me while glaring. I ended up standing out front of the coffee shop in 90 degree heat in the sun eating my snack so I could go back in and then feed my daughter. I've never felt so uncomfortable as a breastfeeding mom. There are 7 other coffee shops downtown Mountain View that don't berate nursing moms for pulling out a snack while getting ready to nurse. There were several street parking spaces open on the corner street that intercects Castro St. My mango/banana smoothie was sweet and succulent. I finished it within a whim! I expected a little more traditional chicken cordon bleu preparation in my chicken cordon bleu panini, but the sliced deli chicken breast was fine. Plus these guys don't have a proper kitchen for cooking chicken so I should just cut them a break. Sandwich was fine. What I can't overlook as easily is the stained and tired furniture. My chair cushion's lining was coming off, and most of the chairs had stains - that shouldn't happen. Decent place but needs some TLC. read more

I used to have a place that had the same gourmet organic coffees, fresh squeezed juices, and sandwiches to die for... it was called Catalina coffee in redondo beach, but it closed down!! Buyer beware: They use flatbread for their paninis. This basically defeats the purpose of grilling the bread and making it crispy on the outside while maintaining the soft interior. I got a grilled chicken panini which was probably the size of my hand. They skimped on the chicken. It was two very thin slices that probably didn't even equate to a single chicken breast. It was also extremely small for $9. They try to make up for the small size of the sandwich with the accompanying side salad (no mention of it on the menu), but it comes pre-dressed with a very dairy-heavy dressing. I didn't like any of the food, and I didn't think it was very good value either. I don't think I will return unless I'm in a rush to see a show at the mountain view performing arts center. read more

This review is for the crepe. So I would probably give this place lower than a three-star if there were other crepe spots on Castro. I had the nutella crepe. I asked for strawberries to be put in the crepe. What was originally $4.50 turned out to be almost $7.50. That's quite a big jump and a bit pricy. The nutella was overwhelming because there was just too much and it overwhelmed the crepe. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE nutella, like I buy jars of nutella, but proportionally, it just didn't make sense. I won't be craving crepes here anytime soon, but it's a close and quick fix if you really want crepes and are on Castro. Not bad, but not outstanding either. For a crispier crepe (and cheaper), I think I'll stick to Tartini. read more

I found that at Bean Scene Cafe, I could actually TASTE my cafe latte and to me, that makes all the difference. In addition to drinks, they have a nice selection of sweets as well as savory items. What I particularly like is that some of their sweets are individually wrapped in saran wrap to ensure its freshness as well as for people to take a pastry on the go. Great location, decent stuff, but TERRIBLE customer service! Came here to study and sat outside on the Civic Center patio with my friend to study. We open our books, and within 2 min we're told by the barista that THIS IS FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY. Space was completely empty, but apparently that didn't stave the complete urgency of us needing to buy something RIGHT NOW. I understand the angst, really I do. The friend I was with is a small business owner, I know that it's not easy. But seriously, if you're going to run a small business, have the right mindset! Yelling at yuppie coffee drinkers to leave your area unless you are a customer is not a great way to gain customer loyalty. So fine, after we're "scolded" by the unpleasant barista, my friend buys an iced tea. A couple minutes later, a friend joins us with tea from Tea Era. Within 5 minutes again, the barista runs outside scolding "no outside food or drink!!" Dude, it's an outside patio, no one's around, we already bought something from your store! If anything I would think that having people at your cafe would be a positive thing, but apparently not. Pay your $2 or get out! Apparently Bean Scene owns all of the Civic Center patio -- who knew? I like the setting a lot. There are lots of tables outside if you like to people watch. However the food is another story. I had the chicken crepe and the nutella crepe. The chicken crepe was a chore to eat. It seemed like the crepe was not fully cooked. The nutella crepe was slightly better but not by much. I had similar experiences as I was reading the reviews for this business; this establishment does not let people sit on their chairs if people do not buy drinks from them. I thought the city owns the chairs, but I guess the business do. The people in this business are mean and greedy. Why can't people hang out in front of a Performing Arts Center and City Hall. I feel like they should allow people to sit down even though these people didn't order drinks from them. When people see a crowd, they want to see what's going on and if they see a coffee shop with a crowd hanging out their coffee shop, people may flock to their coffee shop and try their coffee.
