Convenient location, friendly service. The Beanery (@ Alameda Marketplace) is my home-office away from home. I have a free Surf & Sip wifi account which works solidly anywhere in the place. If you bring a laptop, you'll want to sit at one of the dark wooden bench tables facing the street. That's where all the power outlets are. Sometimes it's tough to get a seat, as there are many surfing sippers---some students, some old timers---anytime of the day. I always try to stay close by so I can pounce if someone vacates one of the power spots. They have a nice selection of pastries (sweet and savory), bagels, cookies etc. In addition to coffee and tea drinks they have fruit smoothies and ice cream (Dreyer's, I think). I pretty much stick to a soy latte (read: lactose intolerant Asian person) with a hummus bagel or a cookie, depending on time of day. Since I pretty much sit there and work for hours at a time (without anyone bothering me), I make sure not to bring any outside food, I always purchase some food or drink, and I tip a bit more than usual. After my work is done, it's a perfect time to stroll the rest of the Marketplace. There is a natural grocer, plus these independently run businesses: cheese & wine shop, butcher, seafood counter, sushi bar, gourmet deli, kitchen gadget store, and a French-trained baker---all under one roof. (It's been compared to Rockridge though I've never really checked that out.) Damn... pretty sweet for little ol' Alameda: www.alamedamarketplace.com/ Note: If you request and receive a Beanery "frequent flyer" card (buy 10 drinks, get 1 free), you can store it in the plastic index boxes they keep on a counter in the back. This saves the trouble of having to keep track of where you put it last (wallet, purse, car, etc.) or losing it. Also, the stamping of cards is on a self-serve honor system. This is an OK coffee place. The outside of the building (the whole area actually) is pretty ghetto and I was not too comfortable parking my car on the street. Once I finally found somewhat of a secure parking spot, I walked in and was greeted to a grocery store and then to the left, the little coffee shop... I didn't get to try any food at the Beanery but the drinks were not to bad and the workers were decent. However, there were flies flying around in the area and that's a big no no! For lunch, my friends and I had pizza from the marketplace and damn, we felt so sick after we were done! It was full of grease, you can actually see a layer of oil on top of the pizza!! All in all, this place is OK if you really don't have anywhere else to go. Would I come back here? Probably not. read more

Needed a space to work so I looked for small cafes I haven tried and came to this place. I tried their Mayan Mocha. It wasn't anything extraordinary. It was ok. They pretty much just sprinkled the spice on top with chocolate powder. I've definitely had better. I also ordered a bagel with jam which was a little more on the crunchier side than I would've liked. The seating was pretty limited as the little cafe is part of a bigger marketplace (I was unaware of that when I chose to visit). If you're going here to work, good luck to you. I've never had something I didn't like from the beanery. Even though it's a coffeeshop, I come here for the food, it's fresh and so good. Of course the coffee is fantastic, and even though this place gets very busy, they still get the orders out in record time. Decent coffee and often a free table outside if its below 72 degrees (apparently 71 and below is too cold). Its usually packed inside and after 9 am there is a line 6-7 deep with some foo-foo half-caf decaf moolatte concoction that holds up the line. Not really friendly, but professional. If you want a good cup of joe and sit out front go to Feel Good. Better food and joe, plus very friendly "regulars" service. Plus, time it for when Jeff opens shop and grab a hunk of kase! This place makes the best mocha I have come across thus far! There is no sludge, it's not too sweet, just perfect. They are always friendly and expedient in making my morning duo (raspberry mocha and croissant) I usually sit outside and it's a great place to people watch. I've been coming here for years now (it helps that I used to work right down the street), and I am always pleased by my experiences here. Friendly staff, clean seating area, and reasonable prices. I try to order bagel sandwiches and other goodies, too, when I have the time (they make a delicious hummus platter), but I usually just order a mocha. I am never disappointed --- it's always quick, hot & tasty! I often brought my lunch to work, and as long as I order a drink, they don't mind that I sit there and nosh on my homemade sandwiches. I was recently impressed by the owner's handling of a disruptive customer ...also a regular. He was ranting & raving about some government conspiracy, leading a few folks (myself included) to clear our throats and look uncomfortable. After the owner had a discreet word with the gentleman and gave him a hearty pat on the shoulder, the guy calmed down and apologized. I have really mixed feelings about this place. We ordered 3 drinks and 3 sandwhiches. A grilled cheese, a park st and spicy chicken. The coffee was so very delicious. We all got our drinks pretty much @ the same time. Things were going good. About 10 minutes later they called out that the grill cheese was done. Little while later the chicken sandwhich. So as a party of 3 we would have loved to eat at pretty much the same time but ok. I waited 30 minutes from the time of my order for a grilled cheese sandwhich with cheese bacon and tomato. So my future husband went to see about my sandwhich. He is told that they will bring it to the table. Cool with me. It does come and the cook chick she is a thicky thick pretty Latina female, she comes out and basically tosses the plate on the table..... I didn't IMAGINE the attitude she deff had one. She tosses the plate, with a flick of the wrist and Looks at the ground says "sorry about the wait. " and storms away. Like wtf if she would have just apologized in a more appropriate manner without tossing my food the review would have went a complete other way. It's apparently my fault that my food was late and she had to OMG WALK TO MY TABLE. Please forgive me! People we spent 34$ bucks on coffee and sandwhich. ... this establishment is in the Alameda Market Place but the service from this rude chick really made it memorable. THE GIRL HAD A SHITTY ATTITUDE BUT SHE MADE A DELICIOUS SANDWHICH. VERY TASTY! The manager/owner asked about my expirience and knew immeadiatly who I was speaking about. You guys should swap the little counter with the stools by the door with the area you add cream and coffee. That way when there's long lines you do have to cross the line to get over to the creamer and what not. It would have a less chaotic feeling in the mornings when the cafe is slammed. I got a breakfast sandwich here one weekday morning, and the service was pretty fast considering how busy they were. The sandwich was really good! So why 4/5 stars? The cashier asked what kind of bagel or bread I wanted my sandwich on, and not wanting to hold up the line to ask her to list them all off, I just said to put it on whatever you'd recommend. So I was pretty surprised when my sandwich came out on plain white bread. The bread wasn't necessarily bad, but I'm sure the sandwich would have been a lot better on just about anything else! A very nice coffee shop with a lovely atmosphere! I come here once a week to get their drinks. My favorite is their Thai Tea and Iced Chai. I'm amazed by the fact that the quality of these drinks exceeds the quality of the ones I try at other restaurants. Price is also very fair. The food is good too but I find that it's quite expensive. I've tried their Spicy Chicken Sandwich multiple times and I loved it. However, I don't order it too often due to the $9 price point. The Beanery has my favorite coffee in the Bay Area. Something about the way they roast the beans, maybe, I don't know. I will always go here, and always rate it highly, despite my gripes (which follow below). The staff is usually very cool, and have my order ready by the time I get to the counter (they know me). Usually, though, they have plenty of time for that. It takes forever to get anything in this place. Two people in line means you're gonna be there a solid fifteen minutes. And God forbid you order a sandwich - you'll be waiting for 30 minutes. Also they have this "Spot On" thing that's like a member rewards program. You scan your card, get points with each purchase, earn free stuff. But it rarely works. :( read more

I prefer this mocha to others I've tried here in Alameda.The bagel was good as expected. The ambience was pleasant. Super hipster coffee shop with amazing coffee! We came here to do on some busy work on a Sunday afternoon. This place seemed super popular since there was a lot of foot traffic from the market. There were limited seating so it's not such a great place to work but the coffee and atmosphere was great. Their tables had real coffee beans inside with a glass on top so it looked really hipster. They had cute little shops in the same building so we walked around before going back to the car. Definitely recommend this place for a coffee stroll (not so much for working and studying) read more

The Beanery is a nice little coffeeshop within the Alameda Marketplace building. I went there on a weekday afternoon, and received friendly service. I was impressed when the barista said that they roast their own beans, and ordered a small cup of the medium-roast Sumatra coffee. My expectations were high that I had found an under-the-radar high quality place, on par with some of my favorites in SF. I was let down, though, when I actually tasted the coffee - it was basically your same run-of-the-mill flavorless Starbucks-style dark roast coffee you can get anywhere. While I'm not an expert, I do take my coffee seriously, and I know what a medium-roast Sumatra coffee should taste like - and this wasn't it. So overall, this was an "A-OK" experience - it's your basic coffee shop. read more

For some reason the location put me off in the early years, but now I'm a complete convert. They always get my drink order right, for one. The manager (?) and his son (?) and all the other staff are always nice. Mellow and friendly service. I am addicted to their hot sandwiches. How are they made so humbly yet so consistently delicious? The Mediterranean platter is awesome and surprisingly filling. Started buying coffee beans, ground to my preference, and so glad to have one less stop on my errands, plus delicious dark roast coffee for home. Have to subtract one star due to being served (take out) an old, dried pastry one time. I'd still get another pastry, but will check it before leaving. Tasty coffee, fair price, OK pastries (came in around 3 pm - so take with a grain of salt.) There is enough seating to sit down and sip for a bit before heading through the marketplace. There were two of us and we both got a double almond milk cappuccino; super frothy, creamy and extra large! I will come back again to try the matcha latte. read more
