This cafe offers a great Just Coffee Revolution roast that is a staple in my home! The owner is friendly, and sweet. He's also very knowledgeable, unlike the staff, with regards to various brews prepared and sold in-store. They used to sell Metropolis, which I loved, but no longer do due to costs. I don't really like going to coffee shops since I have my own espresso machine. But we were out of milk and I needed my coffee fix. It literally took five minutes to place an order here. I've got one person handling the register and another guy writing the order on the cup. I can't order my croissant yet because the guy is sounding out the word "macchiato" and asking anyone that is listening how to spell it. I agree, it is a difficult and strange word to spell. But you've got the whole friggin coffee menu right above your head to refer to. Perhaps under normal circumstances this would have been cute. But it's not when I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet. Fortunately, the coffee is delicious (Metropolis) and the blueberry croissant is the best croissant I've ever had. Great coffee shop with delicious pastries. They sometimes have a line in the morning, but everyone is always willing to wait. They have Kickapoo and Colectivo coffees available. In trying to build up my Yelp resume I'm likely going to end up repeating what a lot of people have said already, but that probably means its true. Being as close to the Rockwell el as it is you'd think it would be great to run in and grab a coffee before hitting the train. Unfortunately I'm the type of person who doesn't leave 2 hours before I need to so I wouldn't have time for that. However, I'm also a person who doesn't have to commute regularly on the train so the times I go to B&B I'm not in a hurry - therefore the coffee is very good but the surprise is the sandwiches. They make really great tasting sandwiches. The turkey is great, also some of their veggie-like sandwiches are excellent even for a meat fanatic such as myself. So, in closing, go there if you've got time and want some tasty coffee and great sandwiches. read more

This place is super cute, the coffee is good, and the food is great. They also recently started serving French pastries, and I could eat one of their almond croissants every day of the week if they weren't 500 calories apiece. Added bonus: they have a nice outdoor patio and they don't get cranky if you change your baby on the floor in the back room (which is a good thing, since they don't have a changing table in the restroom). The only reason Beans & Bagels doesn't get 5 stars is the service. It's super slow, but I could actually get over that if they were nicer and chatted you up while you waited. But, they don't. In fact, I've been going to B&B at least twice a week for months, and every time they act like they've never seen me before. Granted, I'm just another 30-something mom with a baby in Lincoln Square, but seriously, is it that hard to remember a face or at least pretend like you do? Mixed feelings about this place, but the food is amazing so it's getting four stars. The downsides: they always run out of bagels, especially on the weekends. After noon on a Saturday or a Sunday you're lucky if there's any left. And they have a minimum $5 credit card charge. I have been a regular for their coffee for months, and now they start pouring as I walk in the door. Their almond croissants were the best I've had in Chicago. All their pastry was super duper double plus good. SADLY, their pastry chef split. So no more croissants etc. Their sandwiches, bagels and other foods are very tasty but are kind of pricey. Well I guess quality costs. Their espresso drinks are good. HOWEVER their filter-brewed drip coffee is so bitter that I can't drink it even with tons of cream. And listen, I've been drinking quality coffee since I hung out in North Beach (San Francisco) espresso joints in the mid 1970's, drank coffee/espresso all over the US and Europe since before the owners of this shop were born, so I don't think it's me. Their drip coffee tastes like radioactive bilgewater from a decaying Soviet era nuclear submarine in the pens near Murmansk. I go to Beans and Bagels anyway for the food and the espresso drinks. Both are quite good. Service is also friendly and quick. I just avoid the regular coffee, which no one there has a clue how to make. Also, their website - http://www.beansandbagels.com/ - has been down for over six years with a server-side error. I've told the folks at Beans and Bagels about this on several occasions, but they are clueless about their own website. They have a small indoor seating area and they used to have an outdoor area too, but lately they have not had the outdoor seating in the summer like they used to. I love having this place in the neighborhood. The staff are always friendly and work hard to keep up when things are busy. The food orders can take a while to come out but I assume that's because they make everything fresh upon order. Eh, I do not get all these glowing reviews! This place is two blocks from my house. The hours are seriously bizarre. Every coffee shop I've ever known is usually pretty busy in the afternoon. They are losing out on A LOT of business. But aside from that, the coffee prices are seriously insane. I don't think I've ever paid so much for coffee. $6.50 for medium iced latte? $4 and some change for a 16oz plain iced coffee with no milk, no extras, just coffee and ice??? Seriously, boggles my mind. The coffee is alright, but definitely not worth those prices. Alas, I have two small kids so I live in a perpetual state of exhaustion, so I will likely still go here occasionally, but it would be much more frequent if it wasn't for the crazy high prices and weird hours. read more

I've been here a few times now, although only ordering beverages so far. I must say, I am huge fan of their selection of Chai and Green teas. The employees are always very friendly and helpful, plus everything is always clean and there's never a long wait. One thing that is really great (but not so great for my wallet) is the location. It's just a few steps from the Rockwell El stop. This is the first time I've been here and have been able to sit down and take the atmosphere in. A couple things to note: Lots of seating and comfy chairs and couches as well as tables and chairs. Aesthetically boring. There are no paintings or art of any kind. Just bare walls. It's kind of a shame because it has serious potential. Their Wifi is pretty slow. It's not horrible, but definitely not up to par. All in all, I like this place. Especially the location. The Bean and Bagel is only one street over from my font door so a few times I have stopped in for a coffee or tea. They are in the middle of a family neighborhood so the staff are all very friendly and laid back. They have a lot of local products, which I look for when buying from a small business. One thing that really stuck out in my mind was their table of honey, sugar and cream where they have a place for clean and dirty mixing spoons, all metal, no plastic! (Thumbs up!) They're open from early in the morning to early afternoon and there's always people coming and going, so expect a line. There is outdoor patio seating which is very nice, weather permitting. And also indoor seating one door to the left. As I said, they are in a family oriented neighborhood (many moms with baby strollers coming in and out!) and there are kids running around a lot. It is quite petite so it does get very crowded, which is not a good quality when dealing with hot drinks! But, when it's not so crowded there is a great atmosphere. For their size they have many many options for drinks and food. All kinds of coffee, tea, espresso and more. Breakfast sandwiches of all kinds! Toppings you probably wouldn't think to put on a bagel at home, hummus and all kinds of cream cheeses. And also some sweets, like cheesecake! Conveniently located a couple doors down from the Rockwell stop on the brown line it is very easy to pop in for a morning coffee or croissant on your way to the loop or where ever your headed. No matter what your breakfast preference this is a great place to stop in and try something out of your normal morning routine! read more

Recently moved to Albany park. Walking home on a beautiful evening I noticed the counter culture offering in the window. Decided to n stop by for a bagel and coffee. The coffee offerings are so great. Counter culture, Kickapoo, and just coffee. Such an amazing line for a small shop. I found the barista behind the LA marzocca to be both pleasant and intelligent. He pulled a delicious shot of rustico espresso. The only feedback I have: offer some of those great coffees in pour-over or chemex. All in all, I am very happy I found a go to neighbourhood shop. read more

This is really a 2.5 star review. The food is great - good bagel sandwiches, but their croissant are really good. The lower rating is basically because the people that work there think everyone else are losers and they are too cool for school. I work in customer service too, so I know it can suck. But basic manners such as greeting customers and looking like you're not about to roll your eyes every time a customer says something would be great. One girl in particular is the absolute rudest. And honestly one morning, it looked like she hadn't showered in two days and just came from the bar with her thin strapped tank top and the tops of her bra cups were showing. Gross. I'm a long time resident of this neighborhood and I'm quite conflicted about B&B since I really want to support local businesses. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do so when the service is horrendous. I'm a "3 strikes and you're out" kind of guy, and I gave B&B more than enough chances. Unfortunately, this will never happen again as I'm now boycotting them. Yes, it's true that the staff is rude, but that doesn't bother me so much. The bigger problem is the level of incompetence. I can't even count how many times my order was given out to someone else. The last time was the last straw. I was waiting for a sandwich for 30 minutes, there were only a few people in the shop so I was really getting annoyed that no one even bothered to check up on my order. After I asked if it was on the way yet, they came back 5 minutes later to tell me that they accidentally gave my sandwich to someone else, and were now all out of bagels and meat. After I exclaimed that I want a refund because 30 minutes of my time was just wasted, they were shocked that I didn't want to get comped with a piece of cake. I didn't come for a piece of cake, I came for a sandwich. Oh, and the reason why my sandwich disappeared was because "there's just too many Andrews". Sorry to burden you, I guess I should change my name so that your job is easier. The only reason this place gets any clientele is because of their location. It is the only coffee shop in the neighborhood. I guarantee that if another coffee bar popped up across the street, the staff would get their act together right away. Maybe a little competition is exactly what B&B needs. Until then, perhaps I will come back when the owners clean house again. read more

Had the best cold brew coffee with vanilla and cream. The service was awesome helping to explain what certain drinks were and helping make a decision. We went around noon and there were still a decent amount of baked goods left and the monkey bread was delicious. I love this little coffee shop not to mention it is next to my other fave spot Art Cafe, but nonetheless, the coffee is great, try the Guatemala if you are looking for a good drip for at home or work, and do not forget to check out their wide smoothie selection. People are quick to judge the attitude of the workers, but that's so unfair when you think about what they frequently come across all day, cell phone yacking, coffee spilling, and obnoxiously attitude clad folks. Went to B&B to use their Internet and have an ice tea. Purchased an unreasonably priced tea ($3.75 for the equivalent of a grande at Starbucks. At S'bucks, a Trenta is $3.26 and easily 2x the size). All teas have to be brewed individually which took almost 7 min because they forgot my order. Went to cafe area and wasn't able to connect to their Internet (which I tried to do in order to determine what I needed to pickup at the market on my way home). I have installed over 100 networks in my day so connecting to a coffee house network is never an issue for me. Asked front counter if they were having problems, but they just shrugged off my question). I ended up having to use my cell phone data plan in order to access the Internet and spent $3.75 and a large amount of frustration to do so. I understand they are a small coffee shop, but there are certain standards in that industry and having decent Internet is one of them. Next time I'll just go spend less money for better tea and better connectivity at the mega conglomerate. read more

We've lived in the neighborhood for the last 4 years & this is a gem. The croissants are TDF. Dinosaurs a nice touch. Some friendly faces over the years. But please - please - please hire some morning people & do better to keep them around. The grumpy "why are people here right when we open?!" shtick is lame. Lots of folks in this area are up early looking for good coffee, bagels & treats on wknds - retirees, people with kids - as a small biz owner it would seem to be a blessing, not a curse. So please.
