My friend ordered the jalapeño popper omelet ($11.95) and it was outpouring with cream cheese, a little too much for his taste but he still very much enjoyed his breakfast. I had the pesto scrambled eggs ($11.95) they were delicious and even had slight crunch from the pine nuts, which i really liked the change in texture. The potatoes were a little greasy- I would have liked more of a crispy potato, but they had great onion flavor. The jam they give in the side was also delicious, especially with the sourdough bread. Made a reservation here for a Sunday morning but didn't need it as there was plenty of seating. We got seated quickly, and I love how bright and airy the dining area is! The menu is pretty expansive and portion sizes are generous. They are also super accommodating of different preferences and restrictions. I've been to Beans and Barley a few times and each time had one thing in common - it takes forever. Today, I went in and was the only person ordering. I ordered 4 sandwiches and despite being the only person there (and it appeared two online pick ups before me), it took 28 minutes for my order to be ready. There were multiple workers there but most weren't helping prepare food (at least three seemed to not be doing anything and another one manned the register despite only one or two customers coming in during my time there). By the time I eventually got my food and drove home (2 minute or so drive) all of the sandwiches were cold. Beans & Barley is in that 4.5 to 5 star range. I need to eat here a couple more times and I'll justify giving it to 'em. For now though this is where it lands. Came here for lunch wound up eating brunch and it was oh so good! Pancakes are one of my favorites and these fluffy flapjacks hit the spot, especially with the butter and all that Wisconsin maple syrup! Wowzers. Also had the egg burrito which was packed with fresh everything, all veggies. This was solid choice and the medium salsa was perfection. I will try the hot next time though as the medium wasn't terribly spicy. One of my favorite things about Beans is how open and bright it is. The location is also prime. We can walk here from our Riverwest casa and sit back enjoying a bite while also perusing the shops this area has to offer. Update: Went for a lunch on a rainy weekday and the servers were all so friendly and helpful. I tried their grilled cheese sandwich w salads instead of chips and hummus dip w pita and ordered a quiche to go. The grilled cheese was perfect sized and tasted not too heavy yet packed with flavors. The bread was perfectly toasted with butter. I was amazed when it appeared: a few small pieces of grilled vegetables sparsely arranged as a garnish on the edge of some lettuce: 1 tiny mushroom, 2 thin cross-slices of zucchini, 2 miniscule (1/2 inch) pieces of broccoli, 2 small pieces of red bell pepper, and 2 small strings of onion (not even a full slice, just a small strip of onion peeled from the rest. Seriously???? Plus: even though it was only 11:20 am and the place was almost empty, it took more than 25 minutes to get our food (a cold sandwich for my companion and the salad for me). I have been going to Beans and Barley Cafe for well over 20 years. My first meal there was the chicken burrito and it was the best burrito I had ever had. So with that being said that was the only thing I would order. Just recently I have decided to order something new because Beans and Barley proved to me they were consistent with making great healthy food. I was nervous at first leaving my comfort zone (chicken burrito) but I am glad I took a leap of faith. I now can say that I enjoy 80% of the menu. My meat-loving husband is always a little hesitant about vegetarian-focused menus, but we both ended up loving our entrees and have plans to return in the future! When we first arrived around 6:30pm on a Friday night, there was a short waiting list. The time passed quickly as we explored the adjoining market area that was full of healthy grocery items, a deli, and fun food-centric gift/home goods. When our table was ready, our name was announced via loudspeaker. For our meal, we decided on the sweet potato and black bean burrito and the vegetarian lasagna. The burrito filling was on the mushy side, but it actually worked quite well and the overall flavor was delicious, especially with the tangy cream dipping sauce. It came with a side of tortilla chips and salsa which was a nice texture compliment. The vegetarian lasagna was also enjoyable and came with two small garlic toasts and a side salad. The entrees were healthy, filling, and we left very satisfied. The whole time we were there, I was captivated by all the delicious looking plates on the tables around us and had the strong urge to ask people what they had ordered so I would know what to sample at our next visit! The current bright, airy, contemporary building was built to replace its first building, which burned down in 1993. Beans & Barley has a deli, market, and cafe that offer a selection of local and regional products with a slight bent toward healthier, vegetarian options. (Don't worry, there are plenty of non-veggie options in the market and cafe.) The market is small but seems to have a little of everything and is a great spot for a gift for the progressive hipster in your life. I've enjoyed Beans and Barley food for decades, and I respect the consistency they bring to the casual dining experience. It offers an expansive selection of soups, salads, entrees, hot and cold sandwiches, and burritos. You can't go wrong here, but my favorite are the burritos. They aren't traditional Mexican, but they are delicious. Prices are modest. The sandwiches are $10 and under. The burritos are $6 to $9 (with rice and beans extra.) Then this is an absolute must of a cafe! I ended up here with a party of nine one evening--we called ahead to be sure they could accommodate a larger party. One of the party is severely allergic to nuts, another to gluten. It wasn't even a problem here. The waitress was more than willing to check on items for our party, and make some substitutions so that those with restricted diets could still have what they wanted. I got a tofu burger and the artichoke parmesan dip with french bread. The tofu burger, hands down, no competition, was the best tofu burger I have ever had. It was rich, flavorful, and very satisfying. The dip and french bread were similarly some of the best food I've had. I absolutely would come here again, if just for those two items. That isn't even to mention how the atmosphere was really wonderful and that the service was top notch. I do not feel good dropping B&B by a star, I feel like I've betrayed an old friend. Truth be told after my last visit I was thinking two stars but the grocery portion is still solid, it's the restaurant that's slipping. You see I've been to this cafe hundreds of times, I grew up near it, went to the original when I was a wee lad before it burned down. I've enjoyed more breakfast/lunch/dinners here than I can count, I think I've got a pretty good scope of the service over 15 years or so. Staying true to my Yelp morals I have to be honest and my recent visits have been so-so at best. The care in the food, the concern of the staff seems to have drained away. I always get the TLT (tempeh lettuce and tomato), it's been my favorite menu item for years. I love it, or rather I *used* to love it. Last two times the tempeh slices have been much much thinner. The bread dry as a bone, over toasted and slicing the roof of my mouth. Directions like "extra nayonaise and onions please" yield no such thing, it's as if the server is writing with invisible ink. The issue really pissing me off as of late is how lackadaisical they treat vegan requests. Asking for a TLT 'vegan' means nayo instead of mayo and the side dish should be vegan. No exceptions, if I order my meal 'vegan' that doesn't mean I'm ok with cheese in any of it. For those of you that do not know B&B I'm not being harsh, they pride themselves on a vegan selection in the cafe, deli, and bakery. In other words I'm not bitching that a steak house doesn't know what's vegan, it's like that steak house not knowing the difference between steak and chicken. Twice now I've been given side salads with cheese in them. TWICE. The server is always apologetic, half sincere half annoyed, and they blame it on the kitchen. Honestly it's the kitchen's job to follow directions and the server's job to check the food on the way out, you both are fucking up. I remember when the servers here were some of the best around. They did not mess up, they were friendly, they were running around that busy restaurant getting shit done. How hard is it now when we ask for a latte with "no foam" to not just say "sure no problem!", but to ACTUALLY bring it with no foam? This makes me sad. I love B&B. I have memories here, it's got a natural/vegetarian oriented grocery store and no matter where in Milwaukee I lived I always ended up here. But during times where a gargantuan Whole Foods is now a block away from you, parking out the ass, and a Trader Joe's popped up to the north less than 5 miles away it's time to step UP the game, not slip. Cute place, but the service is some of the worst I've ever had. Took over an hour to get our food (a bowl of soup and a sandwich). When we asked why the food took so long, they said they were backed up with deli and online orders (but others that we seated after us were getting their food). Seems weird to not prioritize the people dining in... we asked for the checks right when we finally got our food and the server never came back to pick them up. We had to wait by the door and ask for them to be returned. Overall, the food is okay but you can get the same quality at a better serviced placed. Let me start by saying I should've listened to my husband! He warned me, telling me his last visit was no bueno. Well, we stopped for brunch today and I learned first hand the reason he didn't have a good experience. The service was lacking. After ordering, it took over 10 minutes to get coffee.
