It took me trying this place a small handful of times to finally get a drink I liked, but once I did, I really loved it! The lavender caramel latte is delicious. I've tried the cookie butter and horchata lattes, and they didn't taste like much of anything. Great location, friendly staff, and tasty ham and cheese croissants, too! Now that I've found what I like I will always go back, but it's a little pricey to be so hit-or-miss. read more

Really good coffee! It's located right across the street from the San Clemente boardwalk. Super cute aesthetics and definitely had beach coffee shop vibes. I ordered the lavender caramel latte - I love any coffee shop with lavender-flavored drinks! I was afraid the caramel would make it too sweet so I asked if they can add lavendar flavoring to a normal latte, but they said that they only had the lavender caramel flavor. The drink ended up having a perfect balance of milk, espresso, and sweetness. They only offer one size and the drinks were decently priced. We waited at least 10-15 minutes to order as their line was out the door, but the wait times for our drinks after we placed our order was decent, under 5 minutes or so. No private parking lot, just metered parking along the streets of the beach. Perfect location to grab a coffee before exploring the San Clemente beach town! After my friends and I received our drinks, we crossed the street and enjoyed our coffee on the beach. Highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

If you want good coffee to-go, this is the spot for you. Love this small local spot with the variety of flavored lattes if you are craving something sweet, but the plain regular drinks are just as good, and not watered down! Its a perfect start to your morning! It does get crowded pretty fast and the lines can go out the door, but don't be intimidated: part of the reason why the lines go out the door is because it is small shop so there isn't a lot of space inside, but the coffee is worth a (short) wait. This is not a hangout or spot to work or study as it is really tiny, but great to grab a drink to go and head down to the pier to enjoy the beautiful San Clemente! There is no better way to enjoy a million dollar view with a nice drink in hand! read more

One of my favorite coffee shops in San Clement. Husband and I will drive up from San Diego to enjoy the coffee while taking in the view. Right across the street from the San Clemente pier. Due to the limited seating inside and out, we have never been able to order from their breakfast menu. Usually we grab our coffee/latte and walk down to the pier. Clean and friendly service. read more

Monday morning a little after 9 am. Our two cappuccino s were hot and delicious. The chocolate croissant was fresh and tasty. Greeted by two employees as soon as we walked in. Great vibe and cheerful service! Parking this early wasn't a problem. Good view of the ocean. We are San Diego locals and will definitely come here again. read more

We stopped here yesterday during our lunch break for some cold coffee and tea since it was hot yesterday. I got me the Ice Mocha Bear Coffee with whip cream on it. Everyone bought the food and choices of their drinks. My second time here and i promised id be back. Fountain Valley is not that far from here, So i love it now as one of my go to places. read more

Stumbled upon this coffee shop yesterday evening as it was conveniently located near the San Clemente pier. I decided it sounded nice to order a hot coffee (to warm me up with the cold weather). I was very unimpressed with the entire experience- I ended up ordering a Caramel latte with almond milk which was $7 ($6 + tip). When you're spending $7 on a coffee, you expect it to be pretty good. The coffee itself was 'okay' but the customer service was terrible. The barista called the drink out with no lid so I asked for one as I was taking it to go- she snarkily said "it's behind you" while rolling her eyes. I don't know what's so frustrating about a customer asking for a lid but it was a very unpleasant experience. I'll definitely take my business elsewhere next time. read more

I normally don't drink coffee, but ever since I transition into night shift in a hospital I have become addicted. Bear coast is located in a San Clemente Pier, just take a train here and it will be alongside the tracks. I wanted something strong to just wake me up and their cold brew did not disappoint. I used to be intolerant to coffee, but god damn I now understand the hype. This coffee cafe does not provide anything special in their coffee. It's just purely created for the convenience of tourists and locals. Come by and try them out! read more

I just can't "bear" a morning without good solid coffee. I'm giving Bear Coast Coffee 5 loud ROARS based on our recent visit: 1 ROAR for the location based at the coast - across the street from the San Clemente pier. 2 ROARS for the simple yet ample menu - no pour overs, but the right mix of artisan selections and a few desirable snacks...Double ROAR! 3 ROARS for the speed of service - an Americano (for the husband) and a Mocha (for this wife) and an ice water (for our fur babe) without a wait on a busy weekend morning...Triple ROAR! 4 ROARS for flavor and taste - bold coffee flavor and a bittersweet mocha taste that is not sweet...Quadruple ROAR! 5 ROARS for the California Grizzly Bear decor at this Republic of California, Coast and Coffee experience - logo merchandise available and was that a GROWLER I saw in the corner? Steps from San Clementer pier. Location is certainly as good as it gets... Having spent many Summers in SC since HS, I cant recall what was in this location next to the convenience/liquor store in years past. Nevertheless, I think this is ther perfect spot to have a coffee shop. There are some tables inside and counter-window seating as well. They have a little outdoor patio area with stools to catch a view of the beach and pier while sipping on one. Just what you'd expect from SC. Ordered was a vanilla latte. Cool logo. Stickers they give away with their logo are sweet too. Service was quick. Coffee was enjoyed. read more

Super cute small coffee place right beside the beach! The employees are super sweet and accommodating, always greeting and taking orders with a smile. Prices are reasonable. There is great outdoor and indoor seating, with electrical plugs for charging. Wouldn't recommend it for studying but more for a grab and go kind of place. I didn't try the coffee but did order their chai, which I thought was kind of weak - seemed like the ratio between milk and chai was wayyyyyy off. But all and all, it's super cute aesthetic makes it a great place for beach goers! read more

Great coffee. Great food. Great location. Great staff. What else could you ask for? A finer point on the coffee; the espresso blend is very bright. It's also a little sweet, a little tart, and a little bitter -- which all makes for good balance -- but I found this blend to somewhat overpower the milk in my cortado. I recommend something with a little more milk, than less. Just my coffee opinion. Enjoy. read more

She's the greatest and serves up some amazing Lavender Caramel Lattes - which is currently one of my favorite coffee drinks of all time. Very disappointing. We were desperately needing and looking forward to a pick me up somewhere mid way when driving from San Diego back to LA. I ordered an iced vanilla latte with whole milk and my husband an iced oat milk latte. My vanilla latte had some kind of extra nutty flavoring which was not to my taste at all. Both drinks seemed very watery. Waste of money. Couldn't finish it. Not directly related to this coffee place, but no one around was wearing a mask in the midst of a pandemic surge. Definitely didn't feel safe. read more

Cute coffee shop right by the beach in San Clemente! I love ordering their Matcha Latte to go and walking down the beach on the trail. It is the perfect cafe to go to for an early morning walk or a sunset stroll. They also have seating right outside the shop that has a great view of the beach. Although I love coming here, the parking situation deters me from coming more. It is so hard to find parking here in SC, even though there's a lot right next to the shop. It's always so full, especially in the mornings and afternoons! read more

This place is honestly not good at all. I got the iced vanilla latte w/ almond milk ( which is a 1.00 extra charge ) the total came out to around 6.75 ish. Which I think is ridiculous due to the fact that my drink tasted disgusting. It honestly taste so bitter and gross I was wondering where the hell the flavor was. I had to add so much sugar to my drink to even taste AVERAGE. I honestly didn't want to throw it away because I wasn't going to waste six bucks on nothing but I did end up throwing it away because it just didn't taste good at all even with the sugar in the end. I'm so surprised at how expensive this place is tbh. I didn't taste any sort of flavor :/ Please don't waste your time at this coffee shop, it's cute inside but that does not make up for the lack of flavor and gross expresso drinks. My friend got the lavender drink which also tasted bad as well. 0/10 read more

Decent coffee is everywhere. The chains make decent cups and have tasty options at every one of their many forgettable locations. Let me tell you, when you find a great coffee shop with great coffee...you will remember and you will want to go back for more. This is such a place my friends. I went in just before closing and wanted just a cup of their regular coffee. They were just about out of it so they apologized for not having enough for a cup and gave me the halfie they had left for free. The wife got a delicious latte and the kids got some of their tea selections for the ride home in the train. The delicious smells from our drinks filled the car and made us the envy of the passengers. My half cup of coffee definitely hit the spot and made me really want to go back for more. It was smooth and flavorful and had just enough of the oil on top to make the flavor really memorable. It hit some extra flavor notes I forgot coffees could hit. Great place, great service and a truly solid cup of coffee or tea, from the top to the bottom of their menu. I took the train from DTLA and came to visit the pier and beach for the day. Little did I know that finding this spot would be the reason the trip was so worthwhile. I will definitely go back for the coffee at this place by train plane or automobile. This place is fantastic. read more

Stopped by here when we were visiting the beach last weekend. It was cold outside so decided to get a coffee. I had the lavender latte which was good but wouldn't call it amazing. I've had lattes, including those with lavender flavor, that our significantly better. The location is certainly a 5/5, but that's a bit of cheating because it's right in front of the pier in San Clemente! Also, there are not many other coffee shops around so your options are somewhat limited. Also, they don't have soy milk option. Closest thing to it here is oat milk. Very disappointing for a California fancy coffee stop. read more

Amazing spot. Friendly service, fresh bakery and wonderful coffee right next to San Clemente pier. Thats the "must visit" location for breakfast snack and coffee. I got classic size latte. Temperature of coffee was perfect to drink it right away. Milk was also steamed very well. Everyone deserves to have a good latte in the morning. read more

New location and awesome coffee!! Bear coast is now located right across from the pier so you can get coffee with the best core in San Clemente. The location is smaller, only having a few tables in and outside and a small bar area. Bar area has an amazing view of the beach. Also in walking distance of the pier and beach. The atmosphere is super cool. Fun, hip place with a great staff. I would highly recommend stopping by for a coffee date or meeting. It's a little small for studying or working. If you like coffee with a homemade snack, this is the place to be. Overall, 5 stars for staff, coffee and atmosphere! Will definitely be back for more. read more

Husband was looking for a latte while we were looking for a restaurant that offers dine-in & we saw this one place that has the ocean view on Palisada. It looked promising so i got voluntold to go in & get it. The young at the cashier & barista was friendly & helpful. I brought my coffee thermos & she said they do not offer the service but I asked for hot water so i may rinse it & I can transfer it myself. She happily provided the hot water & poured it for me because she warned me that it was very hot. I ordered the latte for the hubby & the pepper mint mocha for myself. Thankfully they have oat milk & almond milk options. Pricey because it was $4.50 for the latte & a dollar for the oat milk, $5.50 for the peppermint mocha AND an extra $1.25 for almond milk. Sadly, it's a 3 for the taste, price & sizes. My husband wasn't too impressed with his latte. He said that CBTL is much better tasting. My peppermint mocha tasted weird, like a bit sour-weird. I was thinking maybe the coffee from the mocha was a medium roast?Honestly, if it weren't for the friendliness of the barista, I would have given them a 2 . I'm disappointed, I was expecting & wanted to like this place because it looked promising. read more

Love this place, we travel from Vegas to enjoy our time at the beach. This would be our second time to stop by after hang out and enjoy the ocean breeze with very soft sand. We grabbed a cup of coffee, enjoy free wifi and music. Jeff was awesome!!! Second time we are here now, after 10 months ago. I got Matcha latte and spending our late after noon after lunch with my family. Still love this 4th of July 2019, we came to San Clemente Pier and stop by here again. I went in this morning on my way to work to grab a bite and a cup of joe. I was helped by Gabbi and Jamie, two wonderful people. They were very kind and attentive and made me feel truly welcome. The rest of the staff were all smiles and prepared my order beautifully without any problems. The coffee was great and my avocado toast was scrumptious. SUCH good coffee! I had a lavender latte here pre-quarantine and it was delicious. Honestly, one of the best lavender lattes I've had. The service here is also quick and amazing. The staffs are super friendly :) They are right by the beach so it's a perfect spot to grab a coffee and catch up with some friends. I did also notice a few tables inside with people chatting/studying. Parking was a bit hard to find since it was right by the beach, but amazing location nonetheless! read more

I know I've reviewed this place before but it stands the test of time and need another kudo and thanks be... I just adore this local coffee spot and the amazing, incredible and sweet staff. All around from owners to register this place is a welcome spot to visit. Great coffee! Fabulous lattes (and I'm not a big latte guy), and the pastries... yup they have it! Highly recommend whether you're visiting town or the area or a long time local, you'll be treated to an experience. And help yourself to some fun local place swag. I don't visit Downtown San Clemente that often then I heard about this place in the AAA Magazine. I had a ice mocha coffee when it was a warm day that I like cold drinks to cool down. The other person I was with had their popular caramel lavender latte. We both really enjoyed the coffee. It wasn't like really strong to the point that it would taste bitter when I like my coffee more sweet not as like espresso like those coffee shops with drip coffee. I am very caffeine sensitive so those strong coffees might keep me awake and full of energy even till pass midnight. The coffee here is made just right. There is limited seating as this place is shared by The Cellar. It's a nice place to enjoy some afternoon coffee or refreshing good tasting water to re-hydrate from walking from the San Clemente Pier. read more

There's no arguing that the location and view is just perfect. The service was good; place was clean; and there were a couple decent options for sitting outside to drink/eat. I had a cappuccino and the oats with berries. The cappuccino was honestly just mediocre. Nothing particularly wrong, but I've definitely had better. The oats was way too overcooked and dry. Felt like it had been sitting there all morning. My friend had the avocado toast. A little too lite on salt and the seasoning was very smoky. I'd say a smoky paprika? That flavor just overpowered the usual simple avocado toast flavor I enjoy. read more

Review #169 - 2018 I had this place bookmarked from a while back so while I was driving to Anaheim from San Diego, I pulled up my bookmarks to see if there was anything nearby that I should check out. At first, I was wondering why I would bookmark a coffee shop since I couldn't drink much caffeine anymore until I saw a photo that my buddy, Jeff V., posted and it came back to me that it was because of the view. I decided to make a detour even though the baby was still sleeping in the backseat because I wanted to see how nice this view really was. When I finally found my destination after Apple map kept sending me around and around, I was so happy that I didn't give up. The coffee really does live up to the great reviews. I had the iced lavender caramel. It wasn't overly sweet and the lavender scent wasn't overpowering like most places. Perfect cup of coffee for a beautiful day at beach! We're a small San Clemente Coffee service that started up as a coffee "pop-up" in the Cellar, and has now become a permanent fixture of downtown San Clemente. "I started Bear Coast Coffee to simply serve great coffee from great roasters in a way that really supported my family's home-town. We live in San Clemente, and after years in the specialty coffee industry I was frustrated that there was no coffee shop in town that serving coffee I could get excited about. I found out I wasn't the only one looking for something different. So I sold my old car to raise fund, bought an espresso machine and started sourcing coffee from the best coffee roasters in the country I could find. It's been beyond fun." - Jeff

I wouldn't say so, it's a very small beachfront property. There are a few small places to sit however, and if you can find a spot maybe. But even then you'll hear everyone.

The night before my dissertation defense, I ordered a 96 oz coffee (joe-to-go) to go with a note saying I was defending my PhD (preemptively apologizing if I looked like a frazzled raccoon and worried anyone on accident while picking up). When I walked in at 7:45 AM (15 min earlier than my pick up time, bc anxiety), the staff immediately complimented my defense outfit -- instant confidence boost -- and when I said I was the person picking up "lots of coffee," they led me to the coffee, already packed and ready :') They all wished me good luck with the warmest, most dazzling smiles. They even included a note that said, "You got this~!" which I kept in front of me during my defense. (see photo) And I passed!!! Also, they gave me half-and-half and oat milk?? In this economy?? Oat milk is basically liquid gold. I felt so loved. So caffeinated. So non-dairy option supported. Usually after defenses, there is leftover coffee that people are trying to give away. But me and High Tide Coffee? No sir. No leftovers. One of my committee members had about 4-5 cups, and I am not exaggerating., (Even in a field that basically runs on coffee, academics are running on caffeine.... and wine, so a room of 12 people, not all drinking coffee, and still finishing 96 oz of coffee is a record.) Thank you, High Tide, for the excellent coffee, the kindness, the emotional support, and the very necessary academic bean juice. I am officially glad I chose you to help caffeinate the most important morning of my PhD. and thank you again for supporting me emotionally and caffeine-induced confidence :)

What I ordered: -Lavender Honey Matcha: I got this with oat milk and it tasted like water with sweet lavender flavoring, couldn't really taste the matcha. 2/5 My cousins and I weren't very impressed by the drinks here. We all got matcha so I'm thinking maybe their coffee is better because the place was busy. I probs wouldn't come back, and if I did I'd give the coffee a chance.

I could not believe what I saw after ordering. One, the drink I was given was absolutely not a cortado, several times more milk than espresso. Two, I watched the barista pull the shot. The shot took about 5-10 seconds, came out completely thin and watery. I figured, oh he just had a bad shot, he'll dial it in and re-do it. Nope, he proceeded to hand the shot to the person steaming the milk, who filled up the cup (again, not cortado sized) with milk, and called my name. In hindsight, I should have said something, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. The drink tasted like straight hot oat milk. To make it worse, this drink was being sold for $7.50. Sorry to say it, but I do not recommend this place.

Update: I went back 3/3/26 and sat at the drive thru waiting. Nobody answered so I figured the drive thru is closed. I go inside to order and I asked if the drive thru is closed. The baristas say it's open and "we saw you but we weren't sure if you were waiting to order from us or Hendels (next door ice cream shop)" but then why would I be waiting at better buzz to order from next door?!! then I hear them taking a drive thru order while I'm ordering at the counter. it's confirmed it's not the sensors that aren't picking up my car at the drive thru, I'm just being ignored. Cool. I won't be coming back.

I am greatly disappointed that when I asked about the size of the cup, the gentleman flat out lied to me. I find it hard to believe that when he tested the volume of the cup he didn't notice that 2 oz of his soda overflowed from the cup. The Picnic Cafe--please change your menu to reflect that you are selling 10 oz drinks, or change your prices to reflect that you are serving a smaller size. It is disrespectful and dishonest to continue doing business this way.

By the time we got there (around 10am) it was packed and the rain was just picking up because before we got here, the car in front of us hydroplane and skid off the road and hit the curb. Yet, this place was still pack and parking was full. (We found street parking near Starbucks) I had my staff placed our name down since she lives closer, but they won't see you until all your party is here and that's fine. We ended up seating at the bar and left the booth for other parties. Love the teamwork, the staff were super stars doing a rush like that, let me tell you it PACKED HOUSE and we got our food and drinks on time, no one in my party had to wait to eat and I forgot to take pictures of my staff meals, only took mines and what I got for the table to share was a croissant french toast, which I believe was their special of the day. I got the chicken fried steak and the portion are MASSIVE!!! All of us took our food home because the portion size are insanely big and bang for the buck!! Great place to eat breakfast or brunch or even a 'Team Building Breakfast Time' LOL Just happy to treating out my amazing staff on their work. I will be coming back again to try out their lox bagels and chai tea. (It was in a massive cup that reminds me of the show FRIENDS.)

I happened to be seated nearby during an interaction with a group of women who were openly rude and condescending toward her from the start. Despite that, she remained calm, polite, and handled herself with grace. If anything, she showed remarkable composure under unnecessary pressure. Service jobs aren't easy, and it's disappointing when unfair situations get misrepresented online. Based on what I personally observed, Tatum did nothing but her job and did it well. Highly recommend The Cellar for the food, wine, atmosphere, and overall experience. We'll absolutely be back.
