My wife and I play golf almost every Friday. Today we came back to Bear Creek after 2 years of not playing it. What a huge disappointment. The starter was smug and couldn't care less when we shared our disappointment regarding the lack of drinking water on the course. This is freaking Arizona! How does a course who generally charges more than most East Valley golf clubs not have water at every hole? They have no one serving beverages on the course. The greens were very average and any mature trees they have are few and far in between. Save your money and go Ocotillo or San Marco's if live anywhere near this course. Never again! read more

My wife being a first-time golfer. We went to Bearcreek played the nine hole course. Very well groomed and managed a perfect place for her to learn. Was not pushed,hurried or otherwise bothered by fellow golfers. My only concern is the summer prices for the Big Bear Course. A bit much. read more

The course is in poor condition, the 18th green had a very large, and deep patch of sand on the front of it (so much so that you could leave footprints in it). The rest of the course was bone dry and looked like it was dying. Besides the course conditions, the interactions that I had with the staff were so bad I will not be coming back nor recommending this course. The woman in the clubhouse was very kind, the starter was gruff but polite; the "players assistant" aka a crotchety old man on a golf cart looking for people breaking the rules was confrontational and extremely rude. I turned the golf cart around, and in the process went into the desert briefly. He drove up to us and said "You're in violation of the rules, do you know which rule?" I said that I did not, he said that I must know because there are signs on every hole cautioning not to drive in the desert. Instead of asking politely, he turned this non-issue into a confrontation and made all of us very uncomfortable. There is a reason this goat patch has almost every tee time available on a Saturday morning. Stay away from here, there are many other courses for the price that don't include belittling staff. read more

Bear Creek has been on my normal rotation of courses for years now. It's was always an easy go too but was a crap shoot with fairways and rough sometimes. Over the past 5-6 months though this course has been in phenomenal shape. Played it yesterday April 14 and the fairways were on the level of a course like the Raven or Legacy. Rough was in great shape as well as the greens. Talking to cart guy they brought in a new guy to maintain the course and some months back and whatever they paid the guy he needs a raise. Driving range used to be spotty as well and now it's like hitting off carpet. We will see what the summer heat does but this course has definitely elevated its status IMO. read more

I would give them a zero but it won't let me. And let me just say that it had nothing to do with my skill as a golfer. Me and the boys went out to golf and decided to go to bear creek cause it was close, worst decision we have ever made. I called in the morning before we went out to make sure they were open and able to get us in. We were never informed that the course was going to be in terrible condition or anything. When we got there and started to play we were interrupted on every hole by Mexican workers who were mowing the grass and trying to maintain the grass. Only half of them would stop and wait for you to hit while others would motor on by not a care in the world. The whole course was completely yellow. And understandable since the time of year but this was just awful. The 150 markers were pulled and laying down on every hole plus piles of mowed grass, sticks, shrubs, and shit were all over the greens. Unable to put since the ball would bounce around the whole way. The cut grass was like playing on concrete and on top of that there was no cart lady to every drive around. No water out on the course anywhere. They should have shut the course down rather than charge us for these brutal conditions. It would have at least been nice to know before we drive there to play a round! read more

Booked tee time on executive course through the pro shop for this morning. Was quoted $29 for "cub course" and $39 for "bear course". When arrived was told that cub course was walking only due to the rain. I have no problem with that. I asked if bear course was open to carts and told yes. Went to pay for bear course and it was almost 60 per person. I stated that I was quoted $39 and was told by the guy in the pro shop that "they haven't had $39 rates for months". I said ok and went ahead and paid. Before we teed off I looked online on the courses actual website and low and behold it was $39 for a tee time starting in 10 minutes. I went back to the pro shop and showed it to the guy in the pro shop. He started to totally back track on his statement about not having $39 rates. In the end he still would not honor the $39 rate. Stating that was only for "online tee times". If that was the case why didn't he tell me that those rates are online only. Haven't been back to this course in months since we had an unpleasant experience. After going to other courses I now understand how rude the "marshals," are at this location, and also the course isn't in as good of shape as others in the area. My biggest complaint would be the customer service here, we had a "course marshal" harass my family and I after the first hole. One of the players in our group was newer to golf and they were completely discouraged from playing after the interaction. After explaining we were playing at the pace of play and he was incorrect on the start time he believed we had, he still harassed us and followed us to the next hole and told us we needed to play faster. I think he was offended that I was correct about our pace of play not being behind like he accused us of. Description of the marshal: short, bald, heavy set, medium skin tone, upper 50's for age. This information was provided through a private review to the course manager directly after the incident. I tried this course one additional time where the starter harassed me for only being 10 minutes early, rather than being 15 minutes early. Staff seems to be filled with workers who are not friendly. Unfortunate because this used to be a course I would frequent but their customer service has gone downhill. read more

Played the Cub coarse. Muddy mess. This place is great for junior golf but not worth the money. It was better when they had the trailer.

What a terrible clubhouse guys! This guys are cheating people on prices esp on rain check. When you reserve this course, you should make sure you can definitely play under whatever wether condition. My wife and her friends played and they stop at 5th hole, then they got rain check and reserved other tee time. When they went to golf course the other date, this clubhouse guys charged five hole price with full tax!!!!! Full tax!!! What a F!!! What kind of BS is this? Also full price tax? This is Phoenix area, there are so much better courses available. Don't play here. Also, starters are another horrible, no respect to customer and you feel you are begging to play this stupid course. read more

I have played and enjoyed the bear course many times. Today I took my beginner girlfriend for a lesson with Chris, who was awesome, and we played the Cub course after. Very nice layout, good for working your irons and short game, and excellent for a beginner. The instructors here are top notch and I would recommend them for all ability levels. Bar and restaurant are clean and nice. We did not eat but the beer stayed cold in the coolers they provided. Top notch service and experience all around! read more

I have loved this course for a while! There's really not enough good things I can say about it. - Nice staff from the many experiences I've had here. - The bar and grill are just fine for what you'd want - burgers, hotdogs, fries, sandwiches, chips etc. - The both courses are well laid out and well kept...especially for how inexpensive the green fees are usually. - The design of the full length course makes it my favorite choice here. It's plenty challenging but it also offers wide fairways and pretty large greens, so regardless of whether you're a scratch golfer or a complete novice and are trying to learn, this course will certainly play well. - They have a full size driving range, a huge putting green and an OK chipping green. What I really like about the driving range specifically is that the yard markers and pins are set up on quasi-greens. So when you're trying to practice accuracy with your irons and raise your G.I.R. I find this place to be more than helpful. - They also usually host an annual summer kids camp for local kids to do golf lessons... And I have to say it's awesome watching all the little munchkins swinging clubs. Only reason for 4 star and not 5 - when it comes to golf courses, we're spoiled in AZ. As fun as it is and as much as I enjoy it I have to be honest that there are better courses to play so it's not quite a 5 star... But if you enjoy golf and play at this course and you DON'T have fun, that's your own fault. read more

I came here last February to get away from the record snow in DC and decided that visiting friends in Phoenix was in store. My other requirement play golf. I really liked this course. I was a bit crowded so there was a bit of a back up. The cub course is tailored for beginners and it was nice and pretty flat with no water hazards on the front 9. I play Bear Creek almost weekly with my son, and it is always a good experience. This post however is about a bad experience made right by the course manager Paul Besecker. I brought my brand new clubs to the course to play a round with about a month ago. The cart attendant placed my bag on the cart while I paid inside. I then sat down in the cart and started driving to the first hole. My bag immediately fell to the asphalt, and several clubs were damaged. Paul replaced 3 of the most damaged clubs and offered a complimentary round. Thank you Paul and Bear Creek for taking care of the issue in a fair manner :) read more

Played there the other day excited about what I had heard about the greens being faster.......Nope. Once again this course doesnt get what it takes to make this course a must play. We are in prime season and there were greens that were brown and aerator holes...what is that all about...Once again BC let me down and will play the other courses that are around me...you lost me forever. read more

Course is in bad shape . Completely mismanaged and greedy . Greens are terrible. You have to pay to walk . Some of the fairways are dried out . They killed the goose that layed the golden egg. Greedy !! read more

I really like this place for its executive course. It is a quick 18, especially if you get there early. I can generally get finished in less than 2.5 hours and the course is great for walking. The guys in the shop are great too. It is not a five star course by any means, but it is a nice local place to get a decent round of golf. I golf almost every Saturday morning here and have no plans of stopping. read more

My mom has taken group lessons here and really enjoys it. When I was in town I was able to go to the course with her and hit range balls while she had a lesson. The range prices weren't bad, and I was happy to find a beautiful, quiet practice area. Unfortunately one putting green was occupied by junior golfers and another by my mom's group, so I was relegated to just the range and her clubs. I cannot wait to actually get in 9 or 18 holes here next time! read more

Played today. Before paying, I asked about course condition. Man behind counter said it was in pretty good shape. A bad spot hear or there maybe, but good overall..........WRONG. Greens are bare in some places, patched very poorly in some areas, simply no grass left in some areas of the greens. We have golfed at Bear Creek since moving to AZ in 2010. This is the worst we have ever encountered at what was once on our more "favored" courses. The part that bothers me is I asked the condition and was not told the truth. I suppose they said that to insure we played. Fooled me.....shame on you. read more

I played the Executive Cub course today. It's mostly par 3's and a few par 4's. The grass was very green and very well taken care of! At first, I was apprehensive about playing this short course but I really enjoyed it. It's fast especially if you're playing alone and no one is ahead of you. It took me about 2 hours and 15 minutes. It seems great for beginners and kids. They even have "kids tee boxes". The staff was very nice and helpful. The only thing I didn't like was the confusion in finding where the next hole was. Most of the time there is no cart path so you have to look around a little to find where the next hole is. Sometimes it's obvious. Other times it's not. I would definitely play here again! I'm excited to play their "full sized" course next time! read more

I paid $70 plus tax to play this course this morning. The greens were in horrible condition and they tried to aerate after most of the greens have died. My biggest problem is the fact that they did not let us know prior to teeing off or paying that the greens were toast. I play this course year-round and have never seen the greens in such bad shape. Just finished playing 18 today and was very disappointed in the shape of the course. Tee boxes were in rough shape and the greens were in terrible condition. The starter mentioned that there wasn't water on the course, no biggie, I'll just get something from the beverage cart. We played a 4 hour round and the only time we saw her was when we were halfway through the back 9. Unfortunately for us she was on the front 9. Not worth the $50 we paid. read more

Update: 10/11/'11 1) No more mud bunkers! somebody's been listening cause all of the bunkers have been re-done with fluffy, deep sand. I've played this course several times since and getting up and down out of those things is 10 times easier now. 2) Range pass is also improved... pay up-front, get credit, no expiration! Large bucket (today) costs $10.25. If you buy one of the 3 range passes, it nets out to $6.25/Large bucket... smoking great deal! I bumped my rating from 4 to a 5 stars... one of the best Muni courses i've ever been to in my 25 yrs of golfing. btw - I'm now an 8 HC thanks to range time at Bear Creek. Original review: I'm on the verge of being a single digit handicap and call Bear Creek my home course for several reasons: 1) the practice facility is pretty good with a large driving range, large putting green, and a chipping green that I can chip anywhere from 1-40 yards away. Large buckets are a little pricey but in the off season (summer), the range passes are a great deal. Mud bunker sucks but its there when i'm in the mood 2) There's an 18 hole championship course and an 18 hole executive... meaning most beginners will play the exec and the championship course can move at a fair to fast pace most times. 3) its a decent shape Muni course thats almost always your cheapest option. Play this place (a lot) to improve your game. I highly recommend it. read more

Very, very nice course. The layout is traditional links style by Nicklaus Design. Great to do this here because usually only 2 choices in golf course types. Desert and Traditional treelined courses. It was a little dry but greens in good shape. The starter was cool. One bad thing is no water on the course. So be prepared. Will go again. read more

Played golf, at the turn I asked, "what time the kitchen closes", they said 3:30pm, and they mentioned if u called before that, we can get your order in. We get to the 18th and realize we won't make it before 3:30, it's 3:20, so we call in our order, and they say the kitchen is closed. We were pissed, we complained to the manager and he said he would talk to them, but still didn't get any food, we were offered something, but not for the day. I've had many problems with this coarse, and they seem to be above the customer. If your like me, and like to have a day of golf, and relax with lunch, this is NOT the place. read more

Usually this course is beautiful. I came today and spent decent money to play. The greens and fairways were horrible. I'd rather putt my ball on a bag of dicks then putt there again. I play this course at least twice a month. Close to home, inexpensive, and fast. None of that prissy attitude you get at other courses - this is what laid back golf is supposed to be. The new clubhouse is gorgeous, and has a breathtaking view of the 18th hole and the Superstition Mountains. Food is decent - nothing to call home and rave about, but it does the trick. read more

Unfortunately their was a staff member, George, who ruined our morning of golf. Myself and two friends had started golfing and by the 2nd hole George came over and harassed us to go do the cub course because they had a busy morning. (No one was behind us) He continued to harass us at the 5th hole and then apologized at the 11th when he realized we were ahead of our time. Completely sexist and ageist. If I was 60+ and male I would have had no problem. Too bad for Bear Creek, you never know the influence and reach others have. Treat everyone equal and make sure you hire staff that does the same. read more

The people that work outside at this course bust their butts!! They work hard and due to the fact that it's a lower price course people fail to or forget to tip them for their hard work. Next time you go here and have fun notice how hard these kids work and show some appreciation. read more

I love taking golf clinics there, Bruce Calhoun is an awesome teacher and you learn SO much in one day from him. He covers body position, swing technique, physics, accuracy and is very nice too. I saw a road runner bird when leaving in the brush...so that was cool too. I think the caddys are real nice too and they give you rides in the golf cart when you need to get to a diff part of the course. read more

Played the bear course several times. For the price i pay for this course, i can say its almost impossible to find a better course than this. Greens a very well kept, fairways well maintained, staff is courteous, and views are beautiful. Large open fairways will let you find any wayward tee shots from the teebox. A long course, so you will need to use your driver. If you are in the fairway, you will have a great day. If you are in the rough, is not too terrible. Beginner golfers should use this course to build up their game. May be less than challenging for advanced players. Greens could be faster. I would rate them a 6/10. Book it online is likely to get you better rates. Have not tried their food at the clubhouse but the cart girls are always nice and courteous. read more

Really nice course. Moderate difficulty. Was really looking forward to a nice day of golf with my uncle from out of state. Got there about 20 mins early to putt and chip. Unfortunately the course marshal wouldn't allow us and made us tee off early. We ran about 10 mins behind par time which makes sense, we both don't gold too much. But the employees kept coming around reminding us to speed. Started off very promising. Beautiful day, nice course. Very rude and unfriendly course marshals. Doubt I'd return. Perhaps next time don't pack us in like sardines. read more
