I've never had a bad latte from Bear Necessities. The fact that other coffee shops in KC (won't name any names...) get more business is absolutely ridiculous because IMHO this place has the BEST espresso. It's smooth every time, not bitter or watery, and the baristas always use the perfect amount of syrup. I love the housemade bourbon vanilla. Service is great, and the ambience is quiet and cozy. I've been to this coffee shop several times. But we were down the street at a park and decided to stop in on a weekday. The young woman that was working was very nice. They have good coffee there. I believe they may make their syrups. They do not have any sugar-free syrups. I used to love their brown sugar latte, but they did not have that syrup this time so I just got vanilla and it was good. This is a quiet coffee shop that is good for reading or working on a laptop. Their prices are in the range of most coffee shops. They have a variety of seating from seating against the wall with a table in front and chairs on the opposite side. They have quite a few high tops with stools, but no backs on them. Then there are a few high tops that do have backs. They also have a large couch, which is what we sat at. They have an outdoor couch by the front door that people can use. I'm not sure if they share the patio seating with Jason's deli next-door. The only suggestion I have is that the floor needs to be swept more often because each time I've been in there's quite a few crumbs. The first day I came here I had 2 great iced honey lattes, and my friend has a iced chai that's 4 star. the second day I came back it wasn't close to as good, I'd give 2 stars. Stopped into Bear Necessities coffee this morning since I was in the area. The coffee (I ordered an iced vanilla latte) was incredible! One of the best lattes I've had in KC. This was my go-to spot while staying in Overland Park. I loved the chocolate chai, they make their own chai here. I also really liked the pumpkin caramel (housemade as well). I think the pumpkin caramel latte is better with an extra shot (16oz) because it can be a bit milky otherwise but that is my preference. I would try a 12oz with no extra shots but when I tried to order a 12oz I was mistakenly given a 16oz so the next time I went I just ordered the 16oz and added the shot. They are tucked away in a shopping center. I was close by and didn't have my coffee yet so I went to check it out. I first noticed the cool patio space before entering. The inside is a painted dark with some ambient lighting so it gave me slight speakeasy vibes. The service was friendly and I got information about their house made syrups, cocktails, and different seasonal drinks they make. I got a drip coffee and a lemon marzipan latte. They were both made well. There was some lemon zest I believe at the bottom of my drink though (intentional or not). They carry huck coffee beans which is pretty neat because I've heard thats a great bean brand for espresso and coffee. A customer even asked for their whole bean to be grinded for them in the bag which was neat for them to do w no additional charge. I think the space is neat and quiet for work to be done as well. Sausage breakfast burrito ($9) was pretty standard for a coffee shop with limited food options. I am on my continuing quest to find that one coffee place that provides the best coffee experience and when a friend of mine recommended this place, I headed there. I got a 16 oz coffee and sweet scone for $9'ish dollars including tax and tip. The coffee itself was okay, with a bland taste that is a bit like donut store coffee. Light, inoffensive with no bite, it had good temperature but it lacked the taste for good cup of coffee. The scone was a disappointment. It was not sweet, which a sweet scone should taste like (I would think). It was just....there. Even they berries on it (I can't remember if it were cherries or cranberries) had little tartness. The only sweetness that came from it were from the chocolate. As for the store itself. There is a lot of seating but I found the layout to be long, with the only natural light coming from the front of the store. Adding to that, the lighting was a bit dim so the feeling I got was a bit dreary, made worse that the place was nearly empty when I arrived. I prefer a lively spot, even if I am there to do some work. The service was okay, it was prompt, but the server was there to pour coffee and get back to his phone. If you are in the 87th and Antioch area and are looking for a place to do a coffee pickup and like an easy drinking coffee, then you can't go wrong here. I went here about a month ago and I haven't been back since, so I was okay with it, but not a fan. read more
