Loved this family restaurant so much that we came back the very next night! The first night we had the prime rib (absolutely out of this world) and the ribeye steak--both were outstanding. The French fries were delicious, and don't leave without buying a couple of jars of their amazing raspberry jelly that comes with their fresh-baked dinner rolls. It's that good! The second night we tried the fish and chips and the chicken Parmesan, and both were incredible. The portions are generous, the prices are very reasonable, and every meal we had was absolutely delicious. We've driven by here thousands of times and even eaten at Bear Lake Pizza many times but never tried the Bear Trapper Restaurant until today. Even during the winter there was a bit of a wait on Saturday night 6pm. We called ahead and made a reservation for 5 and they were ready for us and sat us right away. The service was very friendly and helpful, but didn't offer much in the way of advice on what to order. And didn't clear our plates until we stacked them at the edge of the table. I ordered the 12 oz ribeye steak MR. It was cooked properly but not even 1/2 inch thick and the flavor was okay. I would not consider this a $30 steak or even close. My daughter had the 6 oz sirloin and it was almost as big as mine. She said it was just okay. 2/5 My son had a burger, which was good.3/5 My wife had the Coba Chicken which had good flavor and a little kick. 3/5 Coconut shrimp 4/5 Fries, big chip curly fries, I thought they were quite good and yes they have fry sauce. 4/5 We tried two desserts. Molten lava cake, didn't seem fresh but frozen and heated up 2/5. Cheesecake 3/5 Overall a fun little diner with decent food. Nice to have something open in the midd of winter. I have a hard time even giving this place one star! Customer Service is seriously lacking! I stopped by earlier in the day to see if they would take a reservation for our family of 27. The lady said yes, but we would need to give them at least two hours advance notice. I checked with my Family and then called the Restaurant giving them a FOUR hour notice. When we got there we were told it would be a little bit as they were clearing our tables. When they took us back to be seated, we were shocked as everyone scrunched in as best they could leaving SIX of us still standing. There were 23 adults and 4 children. The children even needed to sit ON their parent's laps! We were sardine packed into this one section. Everyone was sitting so close together shoulders touching. I don't know how we would've even been able to have eaten our food or how there could even be enough room for plates and cups around the tables..let alone to even be able to pick up our food and eat it!! That just did not even make sense! There were two tables by our group that were cleared off so we asked could our group also have those tables so the 6 of us could sit and help provide some bit of space for the rest of our group. We were told no the manager wouldn't allow it but they could bring out a couple more chairs. WHAT?? At that point, we asked to speak to the manager. I could not believe how demeaning and rude and abrupt he was! He could care less about our concerns!! He said he could not give us any more space. It was ridiculous! Absolutely insane! We told him that that was unacceptable and we were leaving and he walked off! At that point we ALL LEFT! This restaurant should NEVER and let me repeat that NEVER accept a reservation for a group when they really could care less how uncomfortable and crammed you are in to THEIR "allotted space." Bear lake is in the off season is very quiet and this is one of the few places that remains open. The food was good and they have some very fair lunch specials that fill you up. The decor is a nice and relaxed environment. The waitress was really helpful and great with our large group. read more

This place was amazing. Driving from SLC to Jackson a must stop! Just a quick little detour you get to drive along the stunning Bear Lake and stop for a great steak. This place has a lot of charm and our server, Jenny, was so nice. I got the prime rib, my friend and girlfriend got steaks. Butchered in house. Bear Lake is now on our radar and we'd love to come back this summer because of our experience at Bear Trapper. read more

My husband and I recently rode our motorcycle to Bear Lake/Garden City, UT. Our original intention was to have lunch at Cody's Gastro Garage after hearing some good things about it, but between a lukewarm reception and learning that we had to scan a QR code to see a full menu, we were irreparably turned off and left. We headed down the street and found the Bear Trapper. There was a crowd of people on the bench out in front, so we were all, "uh-oh, wonder how long we'll have to wait for a table?" Turns out they were just waiting on a friend, but we took the opportunity to ask if they knew the restaurant and if they did the QR code thing, how was the food, etc. Upon hearing "no" to the QR code and "yes" that the food was good, we decided to give the place a try. We walked in and there was ~10 people waiting in the lobby. A very personable young man in a cowboy hat, bolo tie, turquoise jewelry, and other rodeo regalia greeted us right away (how it SHOULD be!) and assured us we would be seated in a timely fashion, and we were. The dining area was clean and decorated in typical Western steakhouse fashion. We received menus and were pleasantly surprised to find the prices very reasonable. We both ordered Malibu Chicken sandwiches, which were served on toasted brioche buns and not plain white hamburger buns. The french fries were good, too, not overly salty. Our server was friendly and efficient. I think it took ~7 minutes form the time we ordered to get our food. After paying for our meal (in CASH - horrors! ) we talked to the young cowboy for a bit, and he told us about the town's motorcycle rally in September and other things we might enjoy seeing or doing in the Bear Lake area. He was not only an excellent brand ambassador for the Bear Trapper, but for the town. The only reasons the Bear Trapper doesn't get a higher score from me at this time are: 1. our table wasn't in the greatest location, near the emergency exit at the back of the main dining area. But in all fairness, the place was packed, and there were only two of us, so I get that. Plus we were never "forgotten" about, we received the same quality of service that everyone else in the place did. 2. there was a large booth next to us that needed to be bussed, and it remained unattended the entire time we were there. But those were minor issues in the overall picture. We would happily go back to the Bear Trapper again. Next time, we'll try the prime rib! read more

Food was surprisingly good, the breakfast burrito with bacon was delightful and full of flavor. The pancakes were nice and fluffy, as was the French toast. Everyone loved the hot chocolate. I will start by saying this is a lovely, rustic little place run by some very nice people. Prices are very good compared to some others nearby. However - the food. Prime rib was the most pricey dish but it was overcooked. Taste didn't quite satisfy with the pot roast either. Blackened chicken alfredo and chicken parmesan were pretty decent for $11 a piece. Shakes were only okay, unfortunately. Wait was long, but it was a busy Labor Day evening. I'd say give this place a shot, especially on a budget. We had a pleasant experience. read more

I'm home in Utah for a visit and my sister and I decided to drive up to Bear Lake to get a raspberry shake and some onion rings. We knew all the little summer places were closed, but we found the bear trapper open. The onion rings weren't homemade but they were good. Basic hamburger. The raspberry shake was tasty. They make it with hard ice cream and real raspberries instead of soft serve. The restaurant is lovely and they still have the dividers up from Covid, which allows a little more privacy. read more

The Bear Trapper is a old gem in the Garden City sit down foodie scene. The kitsch log cabin with pleather red booths and western bear themed decor is on par with the namesake of the lake. No windows here, but the warm cabiny ambience makes up for lack of natural light. The fare here is diner through and through, but they do it well. We enjoyed the chicken fried steak, a french dip sub, and a classic burger. The pre dinner rolls with their famed bear lake raspberry jam are not to be missed (**hot tip - you can buy a jar in the gift shop at checkout). Also, the raspberry jam pie a la mode was yum plus. Our service was welcoming, warm, and patient with our indecisively slow to order party. All around good folks and good food at the Bear Trapper. read more

4 stars for our food and service from Linsey our server. However zero stars for the owner/manager in how she spoke to a table next to ours. It' was bizarre!!! In fact - we thought we were on the show "what would you do" and joked about where the hidden cameras were. After considering several other local eateries we settled on this restaurant. It wasn't too busy and our table of 4 was immediately seated. Homemade rolls and delicious raspberry jam were delivered as we contemplated what to order. The menu has many options from burgers, sandwiches, pasta, steak and seafood. However, a scene played out at the table next to us as the guests had another couple that was going to join them and brought it to their servers attention. BUT - since they had already ordered and gotten their food they were told by their server their friends couldn't join them and would have to be seated elsewhere even though there was room available at their table. I thought I heard her wrong... but then.... Shortly after, the owner/manager, Jenny, came out and got very aggressive and "in their face". She "passionately" told the 4 guests that it was "HER restaurant and HER rules" and their friends could NOT join them. We were completely dumbfounded as the restaurant didn't have a wait and the table had room and the 2 other couples had intended to order dessert. The 4 guests (2 older couples) never raised their voices Nor argued with Jenny, but did calmly ask questions trying to understand the rationing. Needless to say they paid for their dinners and left. We were in complete disbelief of the unprofessional actions and the "rule" (I get it would be different if they had a lobby of people waiting for a table...but there were plenty of available tables and no wait). The rolls are amazing but you can only have one and you can't even buy more....weird. The service was slow and not very pleasant but she did her best because the servers all seemed to be very very overwhelmed with way too many tables per server. Everything was absolutely wonderful! my wife and I came and ate for breakfast on our last day of honeymoon, and we couldn't have asked for a better thing to do before leaving. The food was amazing. We both agreed it was like a homestyle ihop, and I would argue it's even better. The servers were so nice and welcoming (unlike a couple of other places we tried). We went there one afternoon in July after reading some reviews saying this was the best restaurant in Garden City. After we sat, we felt it was unusually hot. Our table was in a closed corner and the ceiling fan wasn't working. When we asked during ordering if they could turn the AC on,, the waitress said the AC was also broken! we asked to be moved to one of the many tables under a fan or with some airflow. The manager came and said he could not "waste" a table for three people and they are all reserved. I asked if they could at least bring a small fan, and he said they only have one and that's for his wife and he is sorry! Apparently, the AC had been out for weeks but the management didn't care to replace it, or repair the broken ceiling fan, or at least spend $15 on a portable fan! While we were tucked in a corner with no airflow, no AC, and a broken ceiling fan, all the other tables we asked to move to remained unoccupied until we left. The one next to us was set for 4 and we were 3, so the table couldn't be "wasted" on us! The food arrived after about 45 minutes. The mushroom and onion on the burger were supposed to be fried but were still raw. The parmesan chicken was soggy. Better luck to anyone going to that oven of a restaurant this summer. I hope the manager is nicer to you and you get better food. I have to add that the servers were all very nice and friendly and were sweating more than us. read more

We love this small town local place and come here every time we visit the area. I love that they serve rolls with raspberry jam. Their stuffed cream cheese pretzel dessert is a must-have treat. We had a great experience here. Our waitress was so nice! Her name was Jeramie (sorry if I spelt her name wrong). My husband and I decided to order food for each other and not let each other know what we were ordering each other. She went along with us and made sure the other didn't know what was coming. She was very accommodating, even brought my husband two types of gravy because she wasn't sure how to ask which type of gravy he wanted without giving it away to him. It was an awesome experience.
