Nice cool vibe and the menu had happy hour specials. We had the Baja style fish tacos $14 which was battered and fried fish and slaw. The fish was nicely done. The shrimp Louie $22.50 had nice amount of bay shrimp, egg and avocado. The chicken Milanese sandwich $16 was a bit disappointing though. The battered chicken fingers were a bit dry and the pieces were on the small size, as was the fried chicken fingers $12. The deviled eggs $8.50 was creamy. Could've done without the pickled jalapeño-made it bit bitter. We all loved the griddled sourdough $5 ! I'd come back to check out more of the small bites menu. read more

My sister was craving some oysters yesterday so we decided to try this spot, she also found out the $2 Tuesday specials. We walked in and liked the spot immediately it gave the both of us like a very Oceanside spot, not entirely sure on how to describe it to be honest. Our waitress was super friendly and great in serving us throughout our meal. Both of our favorite things that we ate was actually their $5 happy hour fish tacos. We were so surprised and loved the fact we ate that last. The only thing I was taken aback was that the oysters were not chucked entirely properly and there was one that was pretty bad that I couldn't order more oysters like I wanted to, I think it wasn't as fresh. If I could give a 3.5 I would because of that bad oyster I ate. But overall good spot! And I would highly recommend the fish tacos! read more

Hubs has been wanting to try this place and I was craving clam chowder so we decided to check it out. It was Father's Day. We arrived around 7pm and it was busy. We were seated at the bar. Happy Hour was still in effect. They informed us they ran out of clams so the clams in the chowder was being substituted with shrimp. I really wanted soup and hubs and I planned to share items but he's allergic to shrimp. So, decided to order the miso corn chowder. We also decided to take advantage of the Happy Hour and ordered the grilled sourdough, deviled eggs, garlic fries, and wings. Positives - The garlic fries were full of garlic flavor and hubs noted the fish tacos were light. However, the fries and sourdough weren't hot (more lukewarm) and the sourdough could've been grilled a bit longer. Hubs noted the wings were crispy but bland without the sauces. The chowder was also bland and didn't really have any flavor. We really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, the food was a miss for us - quite surprised given the reviews. read more

Tucked into the Parkside neighborhood (Sunset District), this charming neighborhood seafood spot is a gem! Street parking was manageable, and the interior was clean, simple, and inviting. Service was quick and super friendly. We came as a party of six and shared several appetizers: the Brussels sprouts dusted with Parmesan, the fried artichoke hearts (crispy and perfectly done), and a generous portion of ceviche served with house-made chips, bread slices, and this amazing green butter. They definitely didn't skimp on the fish! Drinks-wise, the Old Fashioned was strong and well-made--just the way we like it. We also ordered two chowders--the classic clam and the miso corn. Both were flavorful and comforting. (Pro tip: a few dashes of Tabasco takes them to the next level.) That said, only one came with the full toppings--bacon bits and scallions--so a little consistency would've been nice. My main was the fish and chips made with chickpea-battered rockfish--crispy, flaky, and satisfying. It came with slaw, ketchup, tartar sauce, and malt vinegar--classic and exactly what I was craving. Other standouts: *Watermelon salad special - super refreshing with one of the best vinaigrettes I've had in a while. *Fish sandwich special - basically the fish and chips in sandwich form, and just as tasty. *Fish tacos - solid, two per order. *Seafood pasta with mussels and sausage - so flavorful! One of the two orders came out missing sauce, but we shared the extra from the other plate. Nice neighborhood restaurant that saved us during the sf blackout. We thoroughly enjoyed the service and the food while we were there. The cosmopolitan cocktail with hibiscus was divine and the specials they offered were tasty and interesting. My only complaint was that my steak for steak frites was definitely overcooked, but I would like to come back and try their other menu items as well. Wow! I had heard good things about this new seafood restaurant for the last year, but tonight was the first chance to check it out. It had it all - great ambiance, kind service, excellent food. Husband started with the half dozen oysters, which were premium from Washington state and very fresh, served with mignonette and homemade cocktail sauce. Next up was the cup of chowder, which was huge and enough to share. Hearty with at least 6 shelled clams in a creamy broth, it was excellent. We also added the griddled sourdough with garlic butter which was huge with 6 pieces for $5. Husband wasn't too hungry and had the ceviche, which very fresh with a good amount of chips. He's hard to please but was surprisingly happy. I had the shrimp louie salad which was big with fresh shrimp, eggs, avocado, tomato, radish, and a delicious thousand island tangy dressing. The owner Jeff, a former long time manager at Cha Cha Cha, was very friendly and his sangria was the best we've had. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. Came to Bearing West recently and left genuinely impressed. The vibe is relaxed but still feels a little elevated. Food was excellent: really well-executed, flavorful, and the portions were solid without feeling heavy. Everything felt thoughtfully put together, not just "pretty plates." And honestly, the pricing felt fair for the quality and portion size, which is getting harder to find. The cocktails were a highlight too, balanced, not overly sweet, and clearly made by someone who cares. You can tell there's intention behind the menu. The hospitality was friendly, attentive, and warm without hovering. It's the kind of service that makes you want to come back. Definitely adding Bearing West to my regular rotation. This is a review for Sat brunch/lunch. We were greeted warmly into the restaurant and had our choice of seatings. This appears to be a new brunch place and may be more popular for dinner. Regardless, I had a nice cup of black coffee and promptly provided water (star!). Since it's a seafood -leaning restaurant, we forgo the brunch and jumped to fish tacos, clam chowder (made to order) and linguini with clams. Results? Yum!! Totally hit the spot on all counts. The clam chowder is a MUST when we come back. The clams were super fresh and tasty. Fish tacos - yes please. Second visit here and so glad we came. Friendly service, very welcoming to families with children, delicious seafood-oriented menu (shout out to the cioppino and the shrimp po' boy), and a great space to the rear of the restaurant with shuffleboard and hook & ring games. Both of our visits were on weekends in the early afternoon which were very chilled, with a relaxed atmosphere and relatively easy to get seated without a prior reservation. Just when I thought it was heaven being able to enjoy fresh seafood right in my neighborhood, Bearing West introduced $2 Oyster Tuesdays. A dozen creamy, briny fresh oysters paired with a nice glass Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect meal in itself, but seriously, this place can do no wrong. The warm sourdough bread with butter, fish and chips, louie salad, and mussels with a creamy white wine sauce. All of it good comfort food when you want to taste the sea without having to drive to Embarcadero. Service was friendly and great. There are lots of locals catching the game on tv sitting at the bar. Another wonderful hidden gem way off the beaten path. This is another great family friendly option for those looking for something to eat but also have kids in tow but also won't break the budget. Their deep fried rock fish was very nice. Definitely worth getting either as a dipper or on a taco. Their steamed clams are a nice light dish as well. Do keep in mind food doesn't come out very quickly so it may be a little bit of a wait. In the meantime they do have a full bar so you can always have a drink. read more

Local casual yet homey seafood place! Cute bar area also if you want a quick bite/drink. Servers are very attentive and are great at recommending things to try if you're in a dilemma. Menu is simple yet packed with flavor. They also have a lot of specials you can choose from. We started with the fried oyster and let me tell you the batter was crispy yet light!! It didn't feel heavy/oily at all. The oysters also were HUGE. Next up, cioppino was soooo flavorful and delicious!! I did wish there was more bread to go with this.. Lastly the special they recommended the flat steak marinaded with garlic with chimichurri sauce and garlic fries. Cooked perfectly and the acidity from the chimichurri sauce complimented it great. Recently came twice, once with my gfs and then had to bring my husband back to taste everything. I think what's great besides the good food, is the happy hour and the options of food even when there's no happy hour. They have a good variety of foods, good space, and good parking. They have two tv's in there where, I think they will play some games when it's the season, but off season they have on really nice waves and surfing on the TV for people to enjoy. I also love the bar as they have plenty of options for drinks! It's definitely a great quick stop or enjoy with a group. Definitely will be back again soon and the service was really good. Their clam chowder had the fresh, plump clams! The soup however wasn't as creamy as expected but I think that was intended to let the clams shine. Caesar salad was delicious with the anchovies! So let me just say that I was beyond difficult just now, but nonetheless the server accommodated and I was pleased. Let me begin by saying that I did not wait to be seated and sat myself in the back right away, thinking that I will be less disturbed, then realized the seating was right next to a large party of 6 and the bathrooms. So I told the server I needed to sit somewhere else and he looked and there were still not very many guests around so he re-sat me at Table #1. When asked for drink's recommendation, he recommended the Lychee Lover for drinks, it is Lai Chee but I said Lee-Chee cos that is the way I called it, and he did not correct me. Wow. Then when it comes to my bill, he showed me the run down of the prices on his mobile device. Never seen waiter do this but cool. Maybe he thought those prices were out of my league, lol. The only hiccup was he was way too efficient and removed the oyster shell and orchid flower that I saved. I was doing the bills and tips and did not realize, he gave me a brand new orchid flower nonetheless. Wow. I would totally tell everyone I know of this place and my wonderful experience. So this is how I discovered the place. I live in the neighborhood like about 5 min from their location, had previously bookmarked this to visit but never did. Then on New Year's Day walking down the street, a gal handed me a coupon for one item half off Tuesdays to Fridays. And when I called the receptionist to confirm about UberEats/delivery, she told me that their oysters are $2/piece during happy hours. Two things if I may suggest to the owner is that there are way too many people during your happy hours so obviously your strategy is working but it became way too chatty and loud for my taste. Perhaps you could extend happy hours to 3:30 pm or get rid of the happy hours eventually cos there are way too many people and too packed for that small space. The guests are also incredible loud like in an Asian joint which I do not prefer. So can't comment on the ambiance since dimming the light did not combat their loudness. I need some quality sound proofs. As far as the food is concerned, fresh and awesome tasting oysters. Having a few choices of varieties is cool but the way it was is just fine. So good for the fish tacos except that I would love for more fishes except I know the cost of operations in SF and how guests generally don't come here for portions, so the current portion size is good for all intended. I wish the drink could be on the Happy Hour menu and only selected items like the wine is. All good, I like the lychee mixture and while the other cocktail seems good, this sake mix is more suitable for my Friday's working night! But overall quite decent and very convenient for me. 4.5 stars! So glad this place opened on Taraval. Actually, it turns out they've been here for like 1.5 year now; it's just that Taraval was under heavy construction last year, so we never noticed! The great: **excellent fish and chips, delicately crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I think our server told us they use chickpea batter, which sounds healthier (or at least, less unhealthy haha) **I really liked the nautical theme here! Ropes, portholes, sea creatures, and ships grace the walls and make you feel like a passenger on a fishing boat! **Lots of seats to be had. The most impressive thing to me was how clean everything was (esp the bathrooms); I can tell the owner(s?) really cares about the details. **Tuesday is a great day to come if you like oysters, as they have more discounts on top of HH prices. $2 sangria, anyone? The not-as-great (but not BAD, per se): **the HH wings were a bit chewy/dry, and I think there can be better flavors than mango habanero or buffalo. Maybe garlic parmesan or lemon pepper? **While the HH is perfectly fine, I think the menu can maybe be expanded a bit more. I only really liked the drinks and the deviled eggs. I'm not an oyster fan, but I do think the $3 oyster shooter is a nice deal! I would've loved to see some other items (ideas from my past favorite HHs include things like roasted brussels sprouts, roasted asparagus, fried mushrooms, spicy tuna tartare, chowder soups, etc). But tbh, this is if I have to nitpick. Again, I had a really positive first visit, and I'd love to come back and try other things on the non-HH menu (AND get the fish and chips again!). This is a fantastic new addition to the neighborhood! The owners have truly transformed the space into a bright and welcoming restaurant that would be perfect for a cocktail, happy hour or meal. We came for happy hour (4pm-6pm) and enjoyed many of the happy hour drink specials and bites. The deviled eggs were the perfect foil for the drinks and left enough room to order more. My companions each had a few cocktails & a white wine. I enjoyed the vesper cocktail which had gin & lillet blanc. So refreshing! I also enjoyed the Cal Bubbly which was Domaine Carneros sparkling wine. My favorite! All were very tasty! For dinner, we shared the seafood tower that was chock full of fresh clams, oysters & juicy prawns. We also had the steamed mussels which came with grilled sourdough to sop up the delicious fennel scented broth and the fish & chips which were battered in a chickpea flour. All of the seafood was fresh and prepared well. Throughout our evening, we enjoyed wine & soaking up the relaxing atmosphere. We absolutely love this place and can't wait to return! I love seafood. This place hits the spot with such a fresh and delicious menu! This place would be good for a date night, a special occasion dinner, a night out with the family or just a casual dinner. I really love when places have options where you can eat multiple offerings. I always want to try so many different dishes on the menu, so having a dish that combines dishes is perfect for me. (Like the deluxe tasting of the shellfish cocktails) I know their raw bar will be my go to every time I go back. BW has a seafood tower with 12 oysters, 12 clams, 4 prawns and bay shrimp cocktail. And it's a really good price!! And if you want you can add Dungeness crab! Not many places serve raw clams - I really enjoy the taste and texture of raw clams. My husband and I had the Caesar salad, the Deluxe tasting which includes shrimp cocktail (the BIG ones), bay shrimp cocktail and crab. The cocktail sauce has a great horseradish bite which my husband and I love! We make our own at home so sometimes cocktail sauce doesn't measure up at restaurants - but this one does. They give you two kinds and both are very tasty. The Caesar salad is probably one of the best ones I've ever had. The dressing has all the right notes of lemon and garlic, and that creaminess and richness that goes so perfectly with that crisp romaine lettuce. Everything that we tried is crave-able. Talking about the Caesar actually makes my mouth water. We also had the cioppino - lots of mussels, clams, shrimp and crab. The sourdough bread is also really special. I can tell that the owners were so intentional about the restaurant. The theme is very present but it isn't contrived. The menu also has deviled eggs and fish and chips and a chicken sandwich that I am excited to try! Honestly, I'm so excited that this place is so close to our house. I'm so glad because the food is amazing and the vibe is great. Bartenders are wonderful and welcoming. I love the octopus mural and the picture of the sunset with the ocean in the distance. They're putting up some games in the back room so people can hang out. Shuffle board I think! And there's a nice big tv back there too. The ice cream sundae dessert looks really yummy too! This is another locally owned institution that deserves another 5 star review. I've been holding off on coming here for some time but have to say that I am very happy that I did. John's service was top notch. The food was amazing, and I love how inviting this place feels. It was Wednesday ($1 wings!) so of course we ordered them. I read a review that the wings were "small and sad" so we ordered 18 wings (to be safe) between 3 people. Let me tell you, the wings were neither of the two. We could barely finish them. Huge wings, perfectly cooked, tasted great. Don't believe every review you read, but you should believe this one :) Next we order the sliders and the pasta of the day, both were exceptional, and we finished off with an order of fish and chips. Every single item was great. I have zero complaints and only compliments for John, Jeff, and the Bearing West team. If you haven't given them a chance, I'd recommend checking them out and letting them surprise you! read more

For example, they have a delicious herb compound butter made with Plugra, a european style butter that is rich and creamier than any others I've tried. What a nice surprise! In the middle of Taraval-a clean pub and grill! The food was good-OMG if I could just have a large tray of the brussel sprouts, the crab cakes, the clam chowder, miso corn soup, and the yummy chewy soft and dense bread all to myself!!!! So freaking good! John, one of the owners was very attentive as was the rest of his friendly staff! Great service on a Friday night which got busy! We will definitely be back for more yummy food and drinks! And one thing that stood out for me-(I know some people aren't as particular as I am LOL) this place smelled CLEAN! It didn't have that dirty dish rag smell and I REALLY REALLY appreciated that! I absolutely HATE it when places smell gross because it interferes with my eating experience! So good job Bearing West! My wife and I were walking in our neighborhood and came across this new restaurant. We bookmarked it and several weeks later got the hankering for some oysters and didn't feel like driving across town to Hog Island and decided to give this place a try. We took a chance and BW didn't disappoint. John our server was so friendly and answered all our questions about the dishes we ordered. My wife's wine glass was empty and she was looking at the drink menu, deciding on what to order next. Jim the bartender noticed and came out to ask if she'd like another or something else. Staff is on it here. Everything we ordered was really good. Can't wait to come again, nice having a seafood restaurant here in the neighborhood. After spending a day in San Francisco we had a craving for clam chowder. Instead of hitting a touristy spot we checked out Yelp for a neighborhood restaurant that was on our way out of the city. Lucky for us we found the perfect choice on Taraval. Bearing West is a relatively new but classic San Francisco neighborhood gathering place. We arrived during happy hour on a Friday and it was obvious that regulars were arriving at the same time by the friendly & familiar welcome greetings from the owner. A cozy bar up front is their usual perch. We were blessed to be served by our super sweet, adorable server Glory. Doesn't a server with a great personality make everything better? FYI - she's a kindergarten teacher too and her student's are very lucky! As I said, we craved chowder and we weren't disappointed. Bearing West's chowder isn't the heavy thick creamy potato style. When it arrived at the table the first thing I noticed was the aroma of white wine & lemon. I'm no foodie or chowder connoisseur so I'm guessing here on the ingredients but the bouquet was fragrant and wonderful. Their chowder is served with clams in the shell which was also a nice surprise. Unfortunately we didn't think to take a pic until we had almost finished but I'm sure there are better pics by other more experienced yelpers. Ms. Glory recommended the flash fried Brussel Sprouts and the Mussels cooked in herb butter. Again we were late getting a pic of the sprouts but were more disciplined about the mussels. The sprouts were slightly crunchy but what caught my eye was their bright green color when we cut into them. Not sure if that's an indication of freshness and/or a result of flash frying. But I do know they were very tasty! The mussels were a hit and we asked for extra bread to soak up that buttery sauce. I'd say Bearing West is a must try for folks in the city but don't be afraid to venture out to this neighborhood off the tourist path to explore and treat yourself to a uniques and friendly meal. read more
