    Bean and cheese burrito
    Carol L.

This is a classic San Francisco Mexican restaurant. We arrived early for dinner on a Thursday night and were seated immediately at a nice table near the window. I ordered a mango margarita, as did my daughter, and we loved them. I ordered a standard bean and cheese burrito (lol), and it was exactly what I wanted. My daughter ordered a chicken quesadilla, and our two companions ordered enchiladas. Service can be a little slow but it's kinda what you expect. Place is colorfully decorated and very pretty inside. We love this place and will be back.

Classic Mexican restaurant with a homey feel! We had a party of four and walked in for dinner around 5 PM. We were seated immediately and greeted with chips and salsa. First off, the salsa was fantastic--smoky, spicy, and savory--served with house-made chips. My dad, who rarely eats salsa, couldn't get enough of it, so that's saying something! I ordered a three-item combo (~$25), which included an enchilada, chile relleno, and taco. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The meat was flavorful and saucy, and everything was prepared fresh, complete with melted cheese. My wife ordered a burrito especial combo (I can't remember the exact item name) that included a burrito and a choice of a taco, enchilada, or chile relleno. She chose the enchilada, and it was fantastic. Even my 9-month-old son loved the rice and beans! The restaurant offers outdoor seating and accepts credit cards, which is super convenient. However, as with most businesses in West Portal, parking can be a challenge--plan accordingly. Overall, we were thrilled with our experience and look forward to visiting again. Yummy Certified!

This was that driest and tasteless chicken enchiladas I've ever had in my entire life tasted like cardboard box and the sauce was horrible

The worst Mexican food in San Francisco. We got there 30 mins. before closing on a Saturday night. The chicken enchiladas were dry, super bland, there was no seasoning on anything! The tortilla shells that they rolled up the chicken enchiladas in, were so hard on the edges, almost as if they kept it in the microwave too long. I was so hungry that's why I ate cardboard cuz that's exactly what their food tasted like! Hospital food is better than that! Customer service was good !!! Beautiful decoration !!! But, the green sauce on top had a nasty fresh out if the can taste! It actually tasted like it came straight out of a can and they just dumped it on top! The child size portion of rice had no flavor at all. The best thing on the plate was the child size portion of refried beans and the little tiny salad in the middle of the plate. The tortilla chips and the salsa dip they give you while you wait for your food, was better that the entire meal. However, the sause could be a little milder for folks or children who have sensitivity to hot or spicy foods. Honestly, the only reason we ended up here was because my favorite restaurant Elena's down the street was packed and we were not going to get a table until 2 hours later. So, my associate recommended we go to this restaurant. I WILL NEVER IN LIFE TAKE HER WORD ON ANYTHING! NEVER LISTEN TO A DRUNK, LOLTHEY EAT ANYTHING ! It was horrible the enchiladas weren't even hot and they were not even soft the sauce on top was crapy and NASTY! PLEASE, do yourself a big favor and skip this place all together. They must have friends and family members writing the good reviews. It is worth the wait at Elena's. Honestly I could have took a hot dog from a street vendor on Mission Street & been more satisfied than what I ate there! I could have eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and that would have been better, than what I ate there! Elena's food is a big difference. If I could give them no stars that's exactly what I would give them. Never coming back here! #Yuck #nastyfood

El Toreador is a combination of authentic Mexican food, excellent service and and an exceptional ambiance featuring an unusual decor derived from Mexican folklore. On top of that, the prices are lower than San Francisco seems to be charging in today's market. This is a family owned and run business that has been on West Portal Ave for decades. My favorite is the Dark or Chocolate Mole and the Huevos Rancheros. Bring a friend, this is a fun place. If you like beer they have a variety.

This is a nice place to go if it's not crowded. Service is great and the food is good. The staff is friendly. If it's busier, there's an understandable wait and some tables get ignored more than others. It's as if the staff isn't expecting a crowd and there just aren't enough hands to handle all of the tables. I've had the best luck here during off hours, like between lunch and dinner.

The vibes are busy/fun but quiet in there which was nice for a casual dinner. The food was delicious, really enjoyed the una enchilada with chicken and spinach enchilada. We both were stuffed after. My only complaint is that they need to update their menu! The una enchilada on the menu said $15.95 but when we got the bill it was $17.95. Not a big deal, but would be good to have accurate prices!

We're been coming here for decades... Never disappoints! I always get my standard two cheese, enchiladas, rice, and beans with a side of flour tortillas and butter.

The food was very tasty and authentic. Big selection of beers. The menu offered a variety of Mexican food. Everything was fresh including the salsa that came with the chips. Service as great as well. Very colorful decor

The food was colorful and very tasty! Service was fast, efficient, friendly. Ambiance was so cool and festive. I felt like I was in another country with the background music and interior made the experience even more fun to be at!

Came by for dinner on a Friday evening and was seated right away. The restaurant has very colorful decor and is quite festive. Chips and salsa are complimentary and almost all the dishes come with a side of rice and beans. Imo, the food here is pretty average. I don't think it'd be a place I'd be rushing back to but the portions, decor, and service are great. Peanut allergies: if you have a peanut allergy, make sure to tell your waiter. They put peanut butter in their sauces, not just the mole.

I did find a place where no meat would be available in SF . Once I started thinking of this place I started to map out hella meal possibilities with me creating dishes like San Francisco's native dish Cioppino and also making some salmon dishes along with some okay shrimp dishes like fried shrimp, skewer shrimps on the barbie, and scallop ceviche. The real feast on Good Friday would be getting the Dungeness Crab paired with some garlic noodles . This place has been a Mission District seafood institution and it's called Sun Fat Seafood company ( a former employee started Basa Seafood Express on 24th street). On a Spring stroll on Mission street between 22nd and 23rd streets I went inside a fresh seafood market. Inside you will see live lobsters in a tank. You will also see Dungeness Crab during crab season and also find of variety of fresh oysters selection along with scallops. You will also see sushi rolls when available along with different types of fishes. This place was the solution I was looking for to replace meat cravings and replace with seafood during Good Friday feast. This is definitely the place if you like it crustaceans and fish cooked or raw in SF. One of my friends eventually walked up to the bar to order, where a staff member asked how he could help. She explained that we were ready to order drinks, and he responded, "We go to people's tables, and we will go to yours. Just relax." Unfortunately, his tone came across as stern and dismissive, which made us feel unwelcome. We genuinely considered leaving, but decided to stay and give the food a chance, and I'm glad we did because it was excellent. Hopefully our experience with the service was just an off day, because the food alone is worth coming back for.

OUR PICKS BENTO BOX ($17) + BEEF TERIYAKI (+$2) ~ Miso soup, rice, and a side salad. I requested the beef to be cooked medium rare. My guy and I both ordered the beef teriyaki, so we were hoping for medium-rare or at least tender beef. Unfortunately, my beef came out well done and was pretty tough. That was disappointing. The salad consisted of a few sprigs of lettuce with a tiny bite of seaweed salad, along with a bowl of short-grain rice. 3/5 BENTO BOX ($17) + BEEF TERIYAKI (+$2) + 5 PCS SASHIMI (+$3) ~ The beef teriyaki was the same as mine, but his was lukewarm because his bento took an additional 10 minutes to arrive. The only difference was the 5 pieces of sashimi. The kitchen did not coordinate the dishes to be served at the same time. I had almost finished my bento before his arrived at the table. The only highlight was the sashimi, which was fresh and nicely sliced. He was also missing the miso soup and didn't bother asking for it since miso soup isn't something he cares to drink, but it would have been nice to have the option. 3/5 CRAZY GIRL ROLL ~ Deep-fried soft-shell crab and cucumber topped with spicy tuna, jalapeño, and special sauce. A good roll with a nice bit of spice. 4/5 The salmon and tuna sashimi seemed fresh and buttery. I also appreciated the flying insect light, which helped keep the dining area free of flies and mosquitoes. Unfortunately, the beef teriyaki was not up to our expectations. The beef was overcooked and tough, and the second bento arrived much later than the first. We probably should have stuck with the fish. I wouldn't recommend ordering the beef teriyaki, but the sashimi and Crazy Girl Roll were enjoyable.
