Beast Barbecue - Brisket mac and cheese - Bars Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

Had the beast Sammie with a side of potato salad and add on Brussels sprouts. Can't say the food really makes me want to return again, but service definitely will be their downfall. Took forever for our server to acknowledge us since we were told to seat ourselves. There were a total of 3 tables in house (counting us), two servers and a bartender. Took maybe 15 minutes to get our orders in without the server again acknowledging us or offer to bring waters to our table. After orders were in for drinks, server spent maybe another 10 minutes chatting while we all witness our drinks at the bar for pick up. Needless to say the downfall of this place will be the unwillingness of the servers to do their job. read more

Brought my parents here for lunch and none of us were impressed. None of the meats--chicken, beef, nor ribs--had a smoky flavor, or any flavor at all (though it smelled deliciously smoky outside). The "tangy" coleslaw didn't have any flavor, and the jojo's had too much seasoning. All of the food we ordered was lukewarm. We all agreed that the quality and portions of the food weren't worth the prices they charge. If someone invited us here, we wouldn't not go here, but if we had the choice we wouldn't choose Beast. The service was so-so. I should note that I am used to Kansas City bbq, so this could be an unpopular opinion. read more

Solid, but would I ever crave anything here? No. Drinks, average. No bottle of wine option and cocktails on tap.... gets expensive and pretty average in selection. BBQ Ribs, very good. I was disappointed in their sauces... full of Cumin. Strange addition to BBQ sauce. Beast sirloin was a one and done. Not Smokey at all and incredibly dry for a mid rare slice. Came here for dinner last night and we were not impressed with the food at all. The "brisket type" beef came out a rare, bright red chewy thin sliced beef that was not flavorful and my friend said it was like a lunch meat. My friend ordered ribs and they were out of ribs so he got the chicken, which he didn't care for. My friend ate one bite of the Texas toast and said it had an overpowering taste he didn't care for. JoJo potatoes were cut very thin and were not served warm. Actually, none of our food was very warm, just Luke warm at best. This is not traditional barbecue fare that we are thinking about from other great places across the country. At least Eli's is tried and true across the street. Food is alright, servers don't care and if you didn't know it's a gay bar welp now you do. Double charged for my meal and called to get it refunded now my credit union is filling a dispute after I was told, "the manager will get that taken care of should be refunded in two days" it's been over a week. A lot would have to change to bring us back. We ate here last night (Feb. 2). On the plus side, we thought the food was good (two one-meat platters), though spare. We liked the spicy BBQ sauce, beans, the crispy brussel sprouts. Of course, by the time we got our food, we were ravenous and on the verge of chewing our own arms off. Issues: --Service and food were gratingly and unapologetically slow. We decided to wait the extra "15 minutes" we were told were necessary to get the ribs. And then we waited, and waited, and waited...not only for the ribs, but for our drinks. Both of us had ordered cocktails "on draft." At one point, we asked the server if she was waiting for the ribs to get done before bringing us our drinks. "No," she said. "It's just crazy." The restaurant wasn't full. We waited at least 45 minutes for the ribs. --The person who appeared to be the host or manager strolled around drinking from a coffee cup and seemed oblivious to diners. He should have been visiting tables, thanking diners for their patience, and offering small snacks. --Once we finally got our food, we were pretty astonished to see the small portions. The menu touts the one-meat platters as appropriate for 1-2 people. Are 2 people really going to split *half* a piece of toast, a small paper boat of beans, and a small mound of meat? We realized later that they forgot to give us pickles. (We were delirious from hunger.) It wasn't just us. Just as we were leaving, a group of six people at the table behind us complained loudly to their new server about the terrible service, the ridiculous wait time, etc. We overheard a woman say that she found a piece of glass in her food or glass. read more

We came here for dinner on a Friday night. Ambience was decent. Negatives: 1. food portions were pretty small; we ordered the platter that serves 2-3... definitely would not feed 3 people lol 2. Had the deviled eggs and the smoked chicken. I'm a big deviled eggs fan, but these were terrible, the filling tasted like plain mayonnaise without any mustard, spices, or egg yolk. The chicken tasted fine, but did not look appetizing at all. On top of that, everything is quite overpriced and portion sizes are on the smaller end. My friend ordered chicken wings for $11, and received 4 chicken wings. I was excited to try this place, as I used to love Legends, but I'm sad to say I won't be returning. read more

Tried this place out for the first time. I wasn't impressed with the food and the service. I got the jojo nachos. They weren't horrible but came out lukewarm. My boyfriend got a meat plate with pork butt and Mac & cheese. Everything was cold on his plate. When we finally flagged the server down, he got a new plate of food. The server never acknowledged that something was wrong and never came back to check if his food was better. His Pork was hot but his side was still cold! We waited 20 minutes before the server even acknowledged us. We watched her check-out all her tables, talk with her co-workers, and sit down and eat her food before we got our tab. She walked by our table several times. She never said anything about the cold food and didn't even thank us for coming in. Bummed out that our first experience wasn't awesome. One of the most underwhelming BBQ experiences I've had. First off, draft cocktails? Never a good idea and to no surprise they were terrible. The draft cocktails were synonymous with the BBQ. Small ribs (the staple of any bbq restaurant) with very little meat, small portions, which I wouldn't have wanted more regardless, and top everything off with service that seemed bothered we were there. The waitress literally dropped our check off while walking quickly by our table and only said "here." Now I need BBQ redemption and I could easily get that by grilling/smoking at home. Sadly, Famous Daves is leaps and bounds above Beast and that's not a compliment to FD's. Had high hopes but such a let down. At least tried and true Eli's is across the street. read more

Very okay experience. Not enough to come back on purpose. We got the pork butt and the pork candy. The pork candy was pretty good, not amazing, but good, and the price made sense. The pork butt was bland and a very small portion. The barbecue sauces were pretty good, so slathering those over the pork butt helped a lot. We were surprised that they have Texas Toast and not cornbread. The service was very okay as well. The ambiance left a fair amount to be desired. You'd expect a bbq place to smell like beautiful bbq smoke, but it honestly smelled a little like formaldehyde - we didn't smell any food until about 15 minutes of sitting there, which is weird for any restaurant, let alone a meat-based one. If it were filled with people, that would've helped too - it was about 1/3 full at 6 pm, so it felt a little sad. Maybe some lower lighting might've helped create some coziness. I know they are pretty new, so some big kinks, but hopefully they can work it out. read more

I don't understand some of the negative reviews about this place. Although I only had the Mac and cheese and JoJos they were both delightful. The restaurant looks amazing and everything has been tastefully remodeled. My boyfriend got the smoked mushroom sandwich and he was very happy with that. The portions aren't comparable to Old Country Buffet and that seems to bother some people I suppose. read more

Things were decent, at best. Ribs were pretty flavorful, smoked beef was tender but flavorless and cold. We had Mac n cheese, Brussels and creamy slaw. All lacked any substantial flavor. My real issue was with the value of what we got. $50 for a 3 meat option that included a total of 6 ribs, maybe 8oz of smoked beef and 3 sides was laughable when we opened our togo box. The best part of our experience was the friendly bartender who helped us. We won't be ordering from here again anytime soon. read more

My fiancé & I came here on a whim & were both happy we did! We had the two meat platter with the pork butt & BBQ Beast (beef) with Brussel sprouts & Mac & Cheese. All items were great & went well together. Their mustard sauce & [actually] spicy BBQ sauce were both really tasty, I couldn't pick a favorite. Their cocktails on tap surprisingly packed a punch. First time here on a Friday at noon. Their special baby back ribs weren't ready for another half hour. Food took about 20 min to come out - so we I feel like the service was slow for lunch. And it was freezing. I kept my winter coat on the whole time. Unsure if we'll go back. read more

As a transplanted southerner, I was awfully happy with my evening at Beast BBQ. Most surprising was the Brunswick stew! It's my second favorite of this variety that I've had throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. I'm headed back soon! read more

Ho hum. Have. A couple unique items but other then that it is a typical bbq joint. Basic flavor profile thought with a name like da BEAST we would be in for something big. Stopped by for lunch on a Saturday. The place wasn't busy at all and a lot of waitstaff were standing standing around chatting with each other. It was a huge turnoff that I wasn't greeted after several minutes of waiting. I turned around and took my money elsewhere. This place needs to get a grip on that customer service thing. Beast has some o the best BBQ meats in the twin ices area. the cockalacky sauce is as good as it gets The beast wick stew is worth the price although it's a bit watery. The dining area is large and the staff is friendly. Late night hours are a plus. read more

Had such high hopes for this new bbq joint in our neighborhood. Lots of buzz, super attractive makeover of an older space it looked like it was going to be yummy. I can only hope this kitchen is just having a bad night. We ordered the pork ribs, creamy slaw, mac n cheese & jo jo potatoes. The ribs were nice and meaty but the rub was just meh. We tested all three sauces and each were too sweet for us. Potatoes were cold and over cooked (these are just round cut fried potatoes with some salt & spice. Not what I know as jo jos but I'm not from here). The creamy slaw wasn't what I'd call creamy. It was dry and bland. The staff was really good! Everyone was attentive and helpful and they all seemed happy to be open and supportive of the restaurant. I want to give it another go and hope to update this review with better news. read more

Best barbecue I have had in Mn. The pork candy is so flavorful with just enough kick. The Beast meat is so tender do NOT put it on any bread! The pork ribs were very moist and didnt need any sauce unless you want it! The sauces...Sassy is my favorite. A bit less kick. For you Beasts...there is a sauce with your name on it! I was completely surprised and shocked on how great Beast BBQ was. Everyone in our group of 5 loved it. We got the big platter with a sampling of all the meats plus some sides. Great ribs, chopped chicken, chopped pork and chicken. Plus the brussels sprouts, coleslaw and cocktails were great too. Desserts were decent but not great. This is the BBQ place I have been hoping Minnesota would finally get. We will be back soon. read more

I had a pulled pork salad. It was solid. The rest of my group enjoyed their wings and ribs. I'd come back to try the rest of the menu.

The flavor was good, but i did not appreciate spitting out bones, grissle, and knuckles while I am eating. Prices are ridiculous.--over $35 for a 2 meat platter? Too much for what you get and the potatoes for the potato salad were not cooked enough. read more

Fabulous BBQ, fresh and modern atmosphere, top cocktails, and friendly and knowledgeable staff. After all the top BBQ joints we've visited, this ranks near the top. We ate ribs, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and broccoli salad. Of course the ribs were top, but the shock was the meatloaf. It was just as good as the ribs. When does that happen?! The sides were tasty as well. The chef knows his BBQ. We will return. read more

Brussel sprouts are amazing, get at least the small one trust me hit up the happy hour or anything until 2am, INCLUDING FOOD!!! Parking isn't the best but it's Minneapolis so having anything that's free is enough. You can be happy with spending 12 or 45 a person either way you go it's worth it. read more

My friends and I stumbled upon Beast last Saturday evening when we heard they were hosting house music in the "Belly of the Beast" aka their basement. We paid an $8 cover (which seems a tad high for a DJ night), but the welcoming and friendly staff made up for it. Beast's basement bar is very cozy... dark burgundy walls, couches, and atmospheric lighting/fog machines make it a nice place to lounge and hang out. The house music was good and definitely dance-able, but got kind of repetitive at certain points. All types of folks were on the dance floor and everybody was open to people's unique dance moves which was cool. Later on, we went back upstairs and ordered food. The smoked chicken wings (with 3 yummy BBQ sauces to choose from) and pork nachos (freshly grated radishes and jalapeno peppers) appetizers were delicious! I am definitely excited to go back to Beast for dinner or lunch. The one aspect of Beast that bothered me were the, well, beastly male customers. Down in the "Belly of the Beast," my girl friend and I were repeatedly cat called by a group of men sitting at a table. Also, upstairs at the bar there was a severely drunk male patron who was shouting at other customers and making inappropriate remarks towards females (including the female bartender). Word of advice to Beast's staff: Its 2019. If your customers are being blatant misogynist pricks, please do your other patrons a favor and kick them out. Your establishment is way too nice of a place to serve such rude people. read more

The food here was a-ma-zing. The wings were probably my favorite. They don't claim to be any specific style of BBQ but we got the Beast Feast and the 2 different types of brisket, ribs, chicken, turkey, and pork were all very good. And the sides! Brussels, Mac and cheese, potato salad, baked beans, corn, coleslaw and house made chips were all wonderfully delicious. Also - Brisket wontons - big thumbs up. Our table wanted to try it all and it did not disappoint. New fashioned Cocktails all around as well - delicious! Just go here and enjoy the food. If you are picky about your BBQ style please - open your mind to this place. They smoke good meat and season it well. We loved it!! read more
