If you go, try to sit on the water. The aesthetic of the whole restaurant is funky. Food was all delicious and some fun drink options. Staff was friendly and attentive. Would recommend reservations, but they do not guarantee an outdoor spot.

My wife and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary here a few weeks ago. We got a reservation for a Saturday night and so glad we did since the restaurant was packed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated along the river and we absolutely loved the view of the city.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered octopus & hummus, stuffed dates, kafta and a kebab. My wife ordered a spritz cocktail and I had an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, which we were both very happy with. Overall we had a great experience and would return. Great date night spot!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This was such a lovely place to get brunch![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is the star of the show, and service was very good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I enjoyed the smoked salmon platter on the Mother's Day menu. The breakfast gnocchi was enjoyable with some added hot sauce, a bigger hot sauce selection would have been nice. The Dubai chocolate tart was a decent sweet treat to wrap up the meal, nothing to write home about. [[HIGHLIGHT]]7/10 - really cool place![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We came in last night for dinner, small portions but everything tasted great I just wish my meat dish had more than a tiny bit of rice. The salad, Zatar fries, salmon , beef all was delicious. They even had burgers for the kids which they really enjoyed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat on the front patio which was pleasant but we were eager to try the waterfront patio downstairs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The hostess was super kind to let us sit there for desserts when a table was available, [[HIGHLIGHT]]it was 9:30 pm and super hot down there, we didn't realize that it was a closed patio... but the decor is nice and it has a vibe[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] . Desserts were not that great . [[HIGHLIGHT]]If your coming here in the summer bets table is indoor with ac that are overlooking the river[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Short review: Stunning simply stunning best Mediterranean food in Chicago period end of story. Full review: you have to walk thru the beautifully decorated Moroccan hallways to get to their multi story dining area. The first floor by the river is tastefully designed with that same north African theme including the lights. It's a warm cozy space that's very inviting. Next you go down to the river level and wait for it - It's drop dead gorgeous. I am suddenly overwhelmed with giddy excitement just to be here. You cannot not like this place(see pics and videos). And how's the food? This baba ganoush will give patès a run for its $. It's so finely puréed it's exquisite to the mouth. When you bite into the occasional pomegranate it's a burst of sweetness to balance the flavor - simply the best. The lamb feast that will feed 3 comes with humus Sooooo Finnne, I almost can't feel the grit - again best I've ever had. The lamb is ridiculously soft with zero after taste. We also had the mushroom noodles that is Not al dente but I'm fine with that. It's a thick earthy flavor. Did I mention the floor to ceiling glass walls with a full view of the river and the skyline- not to mention the occasional passing boats. This place gets 5 stars just for its looks and vibe. The fact that the food is excellent just takes it over the top. If you only have one restaurant to visit in Chicago this is the one. After your done the deep dish pizza and Italian beef joints of course.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The view is beautiful, I feel that is the main reason to visit this spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was just OK. The one stand out dish was the steak kabobs they were seasoned well. We also tried the chicken and waffles both were dry and not very flavorful, and the egg sandwich, the sandwich was just a sandwich and barely toasted. Service was OK, they took our order, bought out the food, and gave us the check.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a cute spot right on the river![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The salmon dish was soooo good--literally 11/10 and I would come back just to order that again. The dips were also a great addition to nibble on and share before the meal. Drinks were amazing as always, and the riverfront location makes the whole ambiance even better. Definitely a spot I'd come back to!

Beatnik on the River is a cool experience, but it wasn't my favorite place we ate at in Chicago. While their Mediterranean-style menu is quite tasty, and pretty unique, it wasn't quite as vibrant as I was hoping. It was certainly busy, so I feel like it's a popular place to go, and the waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. For an appetizer my wife and I ordered the avocado hummus, which was great! It didn't at all look like avocado, but it was creamy and came with a couple of crispy tortillas to dip in it, and it was topped with corn and pumpkin seeds. For an entree, I ordered the Chicken Musakhan. While the chicken was good, and it was cooked wonderfully, it simply didn't have the flavor I was expecting. Perhaps it's because it came served over a bed of couscous, to which I prefer rice, but something was missing. Overall, it was worth a visit, and I definitely would go again we were invited, but it wouldn't be one of my "top favorite" Chicago restaurants.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I walked in a little after 6 on a Monday by myself and was able to get an indoor table overlooking the water.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I started with the Avocado Hummus which was tasty and a large portion. For my entree, I got the Steak Kebab which was cooked perfectly and delicious. Would love to come back here with a group so I can try more things!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]First off it's a nice place when you sit by the river.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The only thing is that there are a lot of stairs and it's narrow and a bit dark.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff is great! The drinks were also good. The food was ok. We went for brunch and I got the chicken and waffles. The chicken was dry but the waffles were really good and their dessert was delicious as well. Overall a good place to come and enjoy drinks right by the river.

I work down the street and I've been meaning to check out this spot for a bit! Finally came the other day with friends that were visiting and the vibe is super cool! Love all the rugs, low lighting, and plants. It was also cool to be sat near the windows to see the river. We were sat immediately, which was great. Our server was super attentive and very friendly. We ended up getting an avocado spread app (don't remember the name), and the kabob combo. The appetizer was okay - wasn't bad but probably wouldn't order again, needed salt or something. The kabobs were great, I really liked all of them. All in all, I would definitely recommend this spot - super cool if you happen to be downtown and good vibes if you go with friends or a date.

Hands-down, this might have been the restaurant I was most looking forward to on my trip to Chicago. So many of the videos I watched and the posts I saw mentioned it as want to go to. I snagged a reservation a week or so before I left and I am so glad I did. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love restaurants that not only put out amazing food, but also transport you to a completely different place. The vibes of this restaurant. The details. The decor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And especially the food make this one that I will continue recommending to people. I was a little bummed that the lower level with the hanging flowers wasn't wheelchair accessible, but I was impressed that as soon as I rolled up, the staff immediately got a portable ramp to put up so I could access the upper dining area and their hospitality continued throughout the meal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]While it wasn't over the top like the lower level, it is still so beautiful with amazing views of the river.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We went for a Sunday brunch and tried a number of different things. You can taste the grill and char on that beef kebab which I appreciated as a true Iowan raised on good beef. The short rib hash was easily my favorite. All of the different flavors and ingredients were so different and unlike so many other offerings. The salmon benedict was fairly traditional, yet delicious, whereas the breakfast gnocchi was super unique, but equally divine. The only thing I will say is that I can't wait for the next time I'm in town so I can go here for happy hour, dinner, and/or drinks.

BLEEEKK. I don't recommend this place AT ALL!! We came in around 8:30 on a Friday night and didn't get our food until about 9:15, and the restaurant wasn't even that busy. I'm usually pretty patient when it comes to wait times, so that alone wouldn't have bothered me too much. What really ruined the experience was the service. When we politely asked about the wait, the server was extremely dismissive and rude. He kept repeating that it's tapas style and that dishes come out as they're made, which I understand, but it felt like he was lowkey gaslighting us instead of just acknowledging the delay. We weren't complaining or being difficult at all, just genuinely asking, and there was zero empathy or professionalism. Bad service can completely ruin a meal, and unfortunately that's what happened here. I won't be coming back.

Ask the Community - Beatnik On The River

Do they allow you to have separate checks if a large party?

    Absolutely not

    Are kids welcome?

    Yes!

Is the menu halal or kosher?

no it's not , but calling the restaurant to confirm would be best

    Do they have valet?

No, parking is a challenge. You can sometimes get lucky with street parking and pay the meter.

Do they take reservations on the weekend?

Yes, through OpenTable. Does not guarantee patio seating with rivers views. Typically fills up 3 days in advance so recommend booking early and adding a note about preferences.

Do they have a variety of vegan options?

No not so much!! They were slightly accommodating and could leave stuff out of the hummus, but other than that it was like cooked carrots

Can you wear jeans to eat there?

Yes, anything goes from jeans to black tie

    Do they take walkins?

Yes they will but I would highly recommend a reservation!!

Is this indoors or outdoors with a tent?

Outdoor by the river with a tent

Do you have to be 21 to enter?

Can someone tell me if you can order the double cheeseburger for dinner?

    Yes

Does Beatnik on the River offer Happy Hour specials during the week?

We were there at 4:45 and didn't see any happy hour specials, we were told to order off the all day menu

All the premier dinners come with salad, cheese, fondue, and the chocolate fondue - You are just choosing what protein you would like. The Prince Geja combination has a little bit of everything. However, we most liked the seafood which includes lobster and the scallops were to die for! Also the beef also cooks well. Favorite dipping sauce included the pimento mayo, chimichurri, and garlic butter. The cheese fondue is quite rich and the bread is quite filling so maybe get as much cheese as you can on each piece of bread. The chocolate fondue, I think is actually the best course as the Belgium chocolate melts so well and has a decadent but not overly sweet flavor. It pairs well with all that is provided for dipping, which includes poundcake, rice Krispies, strawberries. They also have some liquor that they light on fire at first so you can roast the marshmallows. It is such a well thought out experience. Service flows very well from two waiters who take your order set up your fondue pots for each course, but be prepared to spend at least 2 hours on this experience. Check out the Groupon but also I read a review that they just tack on the extra $50 so it's not really too much of a savings. Not sure if this is true.

Also appreciated that they were accommodating for the vegetarian in our party. Everything except the cheese course can be made vegan friendly as well. The service was top notch! Appreciated that they called me ahead of time to confirm our reservation and ask about food allergies. All the staff was incredibly helpful and attentive. They were quick to refill items and answer any questions we had. The location is classic fondue restaurant, cozy and romantic. However, also perfect for catching up with a friend. And that's because the menus were being printed with a personalized birthday message! Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and struck the perfect balance of checking in without being overbearing. The mussels (provençal-style) were delicious and enough to share among three people. The truffle-parmesan fries: We couldn't tell if they were too salty or just salty enough, but somehow we couldn't stop eating them! I ordered the baby wedge salad with chicken, and while the chicken looked small at first, it ended up being a large enough portion to last the salad. We were also surprised with complimentary desserts: the Chocolate Chunk Cookie Skillet and Buck Russell's Cake. Though I'm not a sweet person, my dining companions thoroughly enjoyed them.

We were glad to get a seat out on the patio on a lovely Tuesday evening after having spent time at the Zoo just a short walk away. The patio is lovely, two servers handling the large space extremely well. There were some things we had that were standouts, and others that were just fine. The half chicken was excellent, cooked perfectly and rubbed with delicious warming spices, the potatoes and pickled veggies the perfect counterbalance. Similar idea to the dish at Armitage Alehouse, but better seasoned and a lot lighter. The steamed mussels rivaled those of Armitage as well at a fraction of the cost. Very different broth, but the mussels themselves were excellent. We were also really impressed with the tuna tartare, an excellent blend of flavors and textures we could have had seconds on. The crispy shrimp rolls were a slight miss, largely because the shrimp were finely chopped, rather than sliced chunks. You ended up getting more the essence of shrimp than shrimp itself. We also felt the skillet cookie was just fun, no better or worse than we've had at places like Crosby Kitchen. Overall, a really good meal that scrapes being really great at times, and does it at affordable prices with friendly, attentive service.

I really wanted to like it; this was a nine-year anniversary dinner. Service was really attentive and friendly and I did appreciate that they brought out specific utensils for me as a left-handed person, never saw that before! The restaurant felt a bit bare and sterile, I think I was maybe expecting a little more decor on the table for a Michelin star restaurant. To echo several of the reviews below, the salad was awkward to share and scanty, the soup was good but the bread served with it felt like an afterthought, the sturgeon wasn't anything special though the sauce was quite good, and we are pretty sure the cut of beef was not wagyu or if it was it was not cooked the right way. The beef was the most disappointing part, I couldn't even chew through all of it. The add-ons were the best part - pasta was great and our dessert was delicious. But the rest of the meal was unfortunately mediocre. Hoping that others have a different experience with the regular menu!

I love that the tables are widely spaced out so you don't feel like you're on top of another party. I loved the bowls everything was served in, and the silverware was unique. I don't think anything blew me away like I was expecting which was disappointing. We had the caviar supplement, which they accidentally gave us two of (amazing), which was good but also didn't blow me away. I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavors of the soup but that's probably a personal problem. The sturgeon and wagyu were alright. I wish I left being amazed but I left thinking I wouldn't come back, not even for RW again. I think my favorite bite of the night was the sticky date cake. I think it was the most flavorful but it wasn't the best dessert I've ever had. It lacked SOMETHING but I couldn't tell you what.

I'd never been to Willow Room and liked that they had a four course dinner menu, with items I liked. I was able to make a reservation for a Saturday night at 8:15pm. PARKING Parking on Halsted on a Saturday night can be a nightmare, and it did take a minute to find street parking. North of the 1800 block is busier because there are several restaurants within a two block radius. Side streets are permit parking after 6pm. Meters on Halsted are $2.50/hr. ATMOSPHERE Willow Room was pretty packed. We had a reservation for 8:15pm and my party of two was seated right away. The restaurant features a full bar, dim lighting and is nice and roomy. They have banquette seating around the perimeter, in addition to tables in the middle. SERVICE Our server, who was very nice and accommodating during our dining experience, came by and gave us our menu's. I had already decided on the RW menu and after review, my friend was interested in the Beef Wellington (not on RW menu). Our server informed us that normally the whole table had to order off of the RW menu if one person does, but said she would check with the kitchen since this was the last day of RW. Luckily, we were able to proceed with ordering from different menu's. FOOD I ordered a raspberry Cosmopolitan. I'm a Riesling/Moscato girlie, but I tasted the Riesling and didn't like it. RW dinner was priced at $60. I ordered: First Course: Caesar Salad (Typical salad, was good) Second Course: Mussels (Tasted fine, came with a baguette) Third Course: Short Rib (Could've been slightly more tender and better seasoned. I've definitely had better. Wouldn't order again.) Fourth Course: Orange Ricotta Donuts (Donuts were very good. Three were served, a few more would have been more filling.) My friend ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and: Truffle Fries (Fries were very tasty. I would order again if I went back.) Beef Wellington (The breading was buttery and very good. The beef could've been more seasoned. I wouldn't order.) Key Lime Pie (Was not sweet and had no taste. When our server came back and saw it was uneaten, she offered to take it off the bill. It should be removed from the menu altogether.) The busboys and server were very attentive. Our water glasses were always filled. OVERALL The atmosphere was nice, our server was great. Of all the food we ordered, I would order the truffle fries and Cosmopolitan again. I did leave full and did take my leftover Short Rib to go. Main dishes needed more seasoning. I would dine here again and try a different menu (brunch/lunch), or Happy Hour if they offer it.
