Had the flounder over shrimp cake and some sort of grits. The flounder was pasty/mushy. I like my fish to flake. Could have been frozen and micro waved a bit too long? The bottom layer of grits was kind of dry and without much flavor. Wait staff seemed nice. Sitting by the wall on the first floor we could hear the somewhat rude talk by the kitchen staff young people. Overall it was a disappointment. Where to start...food is over priced, $28 for shrimp and grits where you get a plate full of fresh parsley, a couple of shrimp, and a small mound of unflavored unseasoned grits topped with a sauce so runny it's like eating soup. How about over cooked salmon with overcooked mashed potato's that are in the shape of a measuring cup with an equally sized pile of spinach piled on top of the potato's. Top that with zero atmosphere what so ever. No music (well except that of the kitchens music playing loudly(we were sitting downstairs)). They served my alcoholic drink to my 17 year old daughter who took one sip and goes this is not mine (she ordered a virgin strawberry margarita). Service was fine and he took ok care of us but the over all experience was sub par for what they call fine dining. I had a much better meal and service at some of the much cheaper places around town. We will never be back. Couldn't pay me to eat there again. We ended up going home and ordering a pizza that took two hours to be delivered...and it was much better than the food we ate at this place and actually worth the wait. read more

Im not one to right reviews but I was highly disappointed with this place as was my party of 6. I was super excited to try this place however I was highly disappointed with everything!! I was called around 3 pm to confirm my 8pm dinner reservation on a saturday night. When at the table about to order we where told two of the main items where not available ( 4 of 7 ppl at my table where going to order those 2 items) The menu is small to begin with and we were not notified when we got the call or before being seating had we been we would have never had dinner here. The food was horrible that we did get the portions were extremely small $12 Avocado toast appetizer came and was one piece of tiny toast the Fried gallon mod wasn't even enough for one person. Stuff was ok but not attentive at all and when looking for my waitress to send back my undercooked food I had to ask another waitress to get our waitress when she did come she was a little rude about taking food back to fix it. know one checked on us or asked if we needed anything. The bill came to over $450 and 2 ppl didn't get dinner due to nothing for them on the menu because what they would of got was not available (now things happen i'm understanding however communicate it with guest before hand). When the bill came tip was included at 20% im a big tipper so normally not a problem but I felt this tip was not warranted, However bill was paid and everyone left hungry after and went to get food because again portions sizes were so small or some didn't get anything and other didn't find the food good and didn't eat much. This was a huge fail for us we will never go back again !! I've heard that this place used to be the best around and then it went down hill. Well, I'd say it's back to its former glory! We had a long wait but the food was worth every single moment. Two of the people I dined with had it before, both at its best and its worst. They both said it was better than ever. I think it may have been the best meal I ever had. We all tried a bite of each other's dish and they were all exquisite. The lights kept flashing as though the power would go out soon but it didn't take away from the food. There were also a lot of empty tables considering how long we had to wait to be seated but again, the food was worth the wait. I got the flounder and blue crab. Best thing ever. My boyfriend got shrimp and grits. Amazing. His mom got the scallops. Incredible. We got the steak fondue app which could have been better but was still great. I will be back next time. read more

The restaurant is on Topsail Island just south of the Surf City bridge, with a nice view of the sound. The atmosphere is beach formal, which works. The food was actually below 3 starts, but there was a thoughtfulness to the recipes where, had they been executed well, they could have been 4 stars. I'm not sure if the regular chef was on duty or not. For an appetizer, we got the sirloin tips with blue cheese dipping sauce. It sounded like a great concept, and the meat was moist and delicious, but the sauce was inedible. It was so salty that my first bite, on the toast slices provided with the meat dipped in the cheese sauce, kind of stunned me. I had the eggplant Parmesan. There was a layered portion of the eggplant with a moat of red sauce around it. The sauce was sweet and very salty, with a little oil of some sort. It was difficult to tell what it was made out of because of the pungent seasoning. If you kept the sauce from getting on the eggplant, however, the eggplant part was good - properly cooked, lightly breaded, and the right amount of cheese. The cilantro on top actually paired well with the eggplant, although eating it with the long stems attached was challenging. My wife had the petite filet, which was cooked and seasoned well. There was a thin later of potatoes Anna (or at least that's what my wife called it) that she said were delicious, so that all worked. The side was collards, which were cooked as they are down here, meaning for quite a while and with bacon. We're big fans, but it was too salty to eat. And we are not afraid of salt! So, we're hoping it was just an off night. The fact that the seasoning and sauces had so many problems indicates a good recipe with poor execution. I like having the type of restaurant that Beauchaine's might be on the Island, and we'll go back at some point to see if this was a fluke. But at $120 with one glass of wine each, it probably won't be for some time. read more

After hearing we were lucky to even get a table without reservations, I had high expectations. However, I was not impressed. We were seated at the bar while our table was getting prepared; the bartender was very nice and polite. However, after being seated, we waited about 10 minutes before our waiter actually came out. When he came, he didn't even introduce himself or ask if we wanted anything for an appetizer. I got the Surf and Turf special not knowing it was $65 dollars (should have asked the price but oh well); it was delicious. However, it is EXTREMELY overpriced due to the lobster tail containing a very small amount of edible lobster. Lastly, the owner needs to make their staff wear better uniforms. They are honestly embarrassing for an "upscale" restaurant. My waiter was wearing multicolored, striped socks with skater shoes. Sick bro!!! After getting a few drinks, dinner for two, an appetizer, and tipping a lousy waiter - we left spending about $160. Not terrible, but definitely not worth it. Step it up! read more

Was terribly disappointed at our visit to Beauchaines last night. Their Beef Filet appetizer has always been our go-to, they have obviously changed their recipe and not for the better. Not only was the portion size half of what it used to be, it tasted more like beef stew than chunks of filet and the blue cheese sauce was runny and completely lacking in flavor. So disappointing. The entrees were certainly not up to their standards... the salmon came out rare, it wasn't even edible. Cant begin to tell you how disappointed we are as this has been our favorite restaurant in Surf City for the past 5 years. read more

What restaurant brings a bread basket with 4 rolls to a table of 5? Asked for a glass of ice for my water- never got the ice. I even had to go to the bar with my empty glass for my ice water refill. Brought a small saucer of maybe 4 spoonfuls of ketchup for 3 people. Had to go to waitress station and ask for more ketchup. Waiter never checked on us till he asked if we wanted dessert. Another wonderful meal with a great view of the bridge. Mother's Day was a perfect opportunity to visit this small gem of Topsail in Surf City. The shrimp and grits , always one of our favorites, was yummy. Large shrimp and enough to take some home. We had the scallops also. We were warned they were very spicy . Similar to a Cajun seared crust, I confess I removed a little of it but they were still good. The fettuccine with a salty cured ham and scallions and Parmesan was great. Lived up to what people told us, very over priced and not great food. I had a $48 steak ordered medium that came out almost raw and was very tough. They blamed COVD for everything that was not right. The kicker was towards the end of the meal five of the staff with no masks sat at the next table very loudly folding utensils an napkins and gabing away, it was only 8:30. Do your self a favor and go to Sears Landing or Daddy Macs and have a good meal for far less money. read more

This restaurant is only open for dinner so I kind of held my breath when I left a voice message requesting a reservation earlier in the day. We had a party of 11, which is not an easy feat when requesting prime dinner time at one of the few sit down restaurants on the island. Like clockwork, the hostess called me right back, offering a reservation for the time requested. We were seated in a downstairs dining room , which was on the smaller side but very quaint and comfortable. The service was great and our server was very accommodating with our 4 starving kiddos. If she was annoyed, she didn't show it in the least. In all honesty, I think we were expecting sub par food. However, we basically spent our entire meal oooohing and ahhhing over how delicious everything really was. I ordered the crab cakes which are always a favorite. I was very surprised to receive two very generous sized cakes with quality crab. The best was the side of the best whipped horseradish goodness I've ever had. We were all very pleasantly surprised and this will definitely be on our annual must do list while in Topsail. read more

I have owned several beach houses on Topsail Island for over 20 years. I have been to Beauchaines multiple times. The last three times I've been to this restaurant the food and service was fair. However, there is a strong reason why I will never go back. This is considered an upscale restaurant for the Island. All three times, when the restaurant begins to empty the staff starts playing non-pleasing music so loud we cannot have a conversation at our table. Everyone knows this is a ploy so we would want to leave. We pay "a lot" of money to enjoy dinner at this establishment. This occurrence especially happened on my last visit when we were celebrating the return of our friends son from Afghanistan after 9 months of service. So disrespectful. I will never return and I encourage others not to as well. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. Awful management. First of all we made reservations for our party 2 months prior and we were seated 25 minutes late. We finally are seated and our appetizer plates were dirty. The menu we had viewed on the website was 10 years old. Once we viewed their updated menu almost half of the items were unavailable and the prices were much higher. Their seafood was our biggest contributor to picking the restaurant, but the restaurant was almost out of all of it. they didn't even have shrimp... What's a seafood restaurant without seafood. Not to mention, the items are very expensive and we were not offered any accommodations for the inconveniences we experienced. I have been here many many times throughout the years. But tonight makes me never want to go back. I understand that tonight was a busy night. But the snarky attitude of our waiter was uncalled for and with high end menu accompanied with high end prices; I expect high end service. Every month my group of lady friends have our get together. I recommended Beauchaines 211. I made a reservation for 10 and at the time of reservation, the perfect time to inform me of a policy that they do not split checks in parties if more than 5 was never brought to my attention. We all go assuming this is not an issue. Again as we're seated, another great opportunity to inform of us this policy, but failed to do so. Our appetizers arrived ice cold. Our waiter was rarely present and when he was he was rude and unprofessional. We all let it go saying nothing about his poor uncalled for attitude. Kitchen staff delivered all of our food and drinks as I said before our waiter was rarely present. Our waiter only took our order. Upon asking for our checks, this was the first time the "no split ticket policy" was ever mentioned. And when we were all panicking as we weren't prepared to have one person pay 600+ dollars on their personal card he snottily says "it's clearly listed on the menu". Again...Not something any diner is accustomed to checking the Menu for regulations. After we spoke among ourselves figuring out how we were going to accomplish this, our waiter then says to us. It's not my fault. We just have ancient machines that don't let us split tickets. At this point I politely look at him and say: We're not getting rude with you about it. We're talking to ourselves. If this is a policy, That's fine, we're not arguing with you. But don't lie and say it's because your machine is old. Which makes no sense. We should have been verbally told prior to this. The waiter then rolls his eyes and walks away. I can understand if we were the "trouble" table for him all night. But we were completely polite and understanding of the busy night. But the ice cold food and the crappy attitude of that waiter disgusts me. I am embarrassed I recommended this place to my friends and brought them all here to have such a rude snotty waiter be rude to all of them when no one was rude to him. And he got an automatic 20% gratuity, part of the no split bill policy. That waiter not only didn't serve us. He didn't earn it at all. The kitchen staff better be getting that tip. It was such a horrible experience. Such a shame that a high prices place gives such Walmart quality of service. Scratch that. Walmart's customer service is better! Also, the last time I was there , it was 3 couples and they happily split our check 3 ways. So, I was surprised at the policy I never heard of before tonight. This is one of the four upscale dining choices on the island. The food is excellent--as I would expect--but it's the service that sets Beauchaines apart. The hostesses could not be nicer; the wait staff are consistently friendly and helpful; everyone on the staff seems to work together and the facilities seem to reinforce that overall feel of Easy To Be Casual. Wonderful evening views of the ICW and the swing bridge off in the distance (soon to be gone). Beauchaines is known for their shrimp and grits--which they serve two ways (browned & buttered vs low country). Both are flat out exceptional. I absolutely love their Cameron seafood pasta dish--I think it's the best dish on the menu. And it's huge. That's an easy dish to split (ask for an extra plate, rather than having 'em split it in the kitchen), or to take half home in a box. Oh wait ... my favorite is the garlic chicken mascarpone. I know it's not seafood but the tender chicken is set off with just the right balance of pasta and garlic and ... no, no my favorite is the salmon. No. Wait. ... OK, I don't have a single favorite. I have several. Is what it is. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the stuffed flounder. It looks *gorgeous*, but the crab just doesn't measure up to Maryland Chesapeake Bay jumbo lump. Same with the crab cake. Oh, and the crab dip is just a mashed up crab cake. The better appetizer is the calamari, or the BBQ tips, or the fire cracker shrimp. I'm a fan of every salad on the menu. Beach House is my personal favorite, but the salad with the wow effect is the Wedge. Wow. Let's see ... what else? Always have a reservation. Always try to sit upstairs with the view. Parking in the back is really easy--don't get in an accident trying to park on the street out front. Yes, the kitchen is kind of slow--which you won't really notice if you get a salad or appetizer. (I recommend the Wedge, so you can spend some time gawking. :-) Oh and reservations are by telephone only--they haven't figured out OpenTable yet. Their website is ancient, and stunningly out of date. And finally ... if you're in a large vacation-group, you *do* need to figure out ahead of time how you're gonna split the check. Multiple credit cards work fine, but they don't do separate checks on those big giant groups. We're fortunate enough to live here on Topsail. If company is coming and we want to go someplace a little nicer, Beauchaines and Beach Shop and Grill are our go-to choices. Hope this helps! read more

We've been to Beauchaines twice before and thought it was great. I gave it a very good review last time and looked forward to returning. My wife and I arrived...we tried to call for a reservation but no answer. We waited for a bit with no one in sight; finally someone asked if we had been helped...someone arrived shortly, but "30 minute wait." We decided to stick it out...our hostess was pleasant and we chatted with some other folks waiting. We finally were taken upstairs and there were quite a few empty tables, so I'm not sure why we had to wait. Our server arrived shortly to take drinks. My wife ordered a Margarita but our server had to look at the menu...it seemed like he wasn't sure what a Margarita was. I ordered a house special Old Fashioned, and again he had to look at the menu. Drinks were OK, but took quite a while. Our server came back and stood there until I said "Can we order now?" We started with "Tomato Bacon Jam Oysters" which sounded really good. They were really overcooked...dry...the oysters had shrunk to the size of a pencil eraser. My wife ordered "Diver Scallop Scampi" ($38!), served over pasta. I think there were only 4 scallops and were so salty they burned your mouths. There was virtually no sauce on the pasta so it was a very dry dish. I went with "Brown Butter Shrimp & Grits" ($28) This was the best thing we ate that night and had the unusual twist of a sunnyside egg on top...but the grits were not flavorful and were in a watery sauce that tasted like...well...water. The waiter never came back to see if we wanted another drink nor did we get bread as other tables had. We had to ask about dessert. In the past I recall saying "Wow, that's good" but there was none of that this time. We had a hefty bill after such a disappointing night. Hope it was an "Off" performance. read more

Ate Saturday night before Mother's Day on the deck. The food and service were great! Ate Shrimp and Grits. The sunset was spectacular!

Had dinner there on Saturday and was a bit disappointed. At one time Beauchaine's was known as best restaurant on the island. We thought food was just okay, having said that, expected better for the prices charged. There were no specials, and some of the entrees were not available, seafood portions were quite small. I will start with a positive comment; the food was very good...and the waiter was busy and did the best he could....also he still got his 20% tip.....but! 1. They were out of numerous items including wine selections, wine glasses, crab meat, lettuce for wedge salad. Only other choice for salad was Caesar. 2. Steak fondue appetizer was cold-like, "out of the fridge" cold. It was returned. When brought back to table, was cold again but we reluctantly kept it. 3. Food was overpriced--$24, 28, 38, 58 per entree. 4. They refused to split the bill. We had a party of eight and we were told they would only take (2) credit cards for payment. Refused to split the bill by 8. The bill was $600plus! We are local patrons and like to support local businesses but will never go back. They just lost 8 customers--Had they attempted to accommodate us by splitting the bill (8) ways, we most certainly would have given them another chance. read more

Could be better with minor changes. We each ordered drinks, appetizers, and entrees. My appetizer was the caprese with fried green tomatoes. The pesto and bacon jam was delicious. There was also a lot of it. The fried green tomato slices got soggy in all the dressing and the crispy coating slid off. Individually, the elements were good but together they didn't work well. Also, there was a large pile of cilantro on top, almost acting as a salad. I like cilantro but this was entirely too much. My scallops entree also had some missteps. The positive is that the scallops were large and sweet, no grittiness, and properly cooked. The corn and bacon accompaniment was delicious. The side salad was not good. Seemed to be a a lot of sliced celery and a soupy mayo based dressing. Again, a big pile of cilantro. Really needed a starch (like the mashers on my husband's steak) to help soak everything up and add substance. My husband got the pickled shrimp appetizer. It was good. Again, another large pile of cilantro. He got the filet for his entree. Nicely prepared, really awesome mashed potatoes, greens. Another large and confusing pile of cilantro. We went early and were one of the first to be seated. View was nice, service was fine, couple water refreshes and inquires about our food and if we wanted more drinks. The bread and butter was super tasty and our waiter offered to bring back another basket. Overall, I can see the attempts at thoughtful and tasty dishes. However, the experience of a few odd mistakes (tons of cilantro, sloppily executed caprese salad, unappetizing salad to pair with scallops) trumps the intended outcome of a wow dinner. read more
