About six and a half years ago, I cut my long hair off on a whim and donated it to locks of love (they were doing free haircuts in the student center of my college.) My hair grew back to waist-length in another two years, and I cut it short and donated it again. Years later, I was ready to make the chop once more! The first time, I got a free haircut in the middle of the student union. The second time, I got a mediocre haircut for $12 from a student at the Paul Mitchell school. This time around, I wanted to do things like a real grown-up, and get a good haircut for once. I found a Lifebooker coupon for a haircut, Moroccan oil conditioning, and blow dry for a great price of $25. I got such a great haircut and had such a good experience that I (queen of cheap or free haircuts) would have happily paid more! I came in not knowing quite what I wanted. I explained that I wanted something very low maintenance (wash and wear, basically) and shoulder length. Esmeralda had great suggestions, and made me feel really confident. She cut 13 inches off for me to donate (!), then washed my hair and gave me a fantastic cut. My hair now has lovely layers and a great shape, even when I don't do anything to it. Esmeralda also showed me how to use a straightener! The only hair styling tools I own a brush, wide-tooth comb, and a dryer. My hair is thick and straight, so I've never straightened my hair before. But she explained what it does, and straightened my hair to show me how to use it. She then styled it in a really simple way, showing me what she was doing so I could repeat it at home. So helpful! Logistical information: the salon is located in a mini-mall that says "Studio City" on the side. There is a free underground garage with ample parking. Go to the 2nd floor, where it says "Salon Republic." Esmeralda is in room #15. There's supposed to be a front desk person there to show you where to go, but (as happened to another reviewer) no one was there when I arrived, and I couldn't find a directory. Like Hillary, I cannot comment on the service as Esmeralda is completely unreachable. I tried many times over the course of 3 months to contact her with no response, maybe she should have limited the deals she was offering if it keeps her too busy. But the lifebooker i had, has now expired and I still tried to call her and redeem the credit towards the original hair cut...no response, I left another message...no response. She might be good when she's actually professional enough to respond to calls and messages. Esmeralda has no concept of color or highlights and is just God awful! She seriously destroyed my hair. I think a color-blind person (or even straight up blind) would have done better job. I was in need of a cut BADLY. But I had no stylist and the process of finding one is tidious, stressful and just annoying. I've been to pricey salons only to not be thrilled with the results. So I found a lifebooker - $65 for a cut, highlights, and style. I checked reviews and it seem like it might workout well. My experience was great! Esmeralda took the time to listen to me: I like long hair but I was tired of the same ole same ole. Esmeralda gave me some suggestions and showed me pictures of some actresses with the same cut/color/style and then also showed me pictures of HER work. I thought this was great because stylists often show me pictures of a magazine and I never come out looking anything remotely close to that color or style. Because I was celebrating my bday that night, Esmeralda made sure she styled my hair extra nice. She also showed me how to use a Marcel curling iron so I can replicate the style! Some good things to know: Beauty is hair salon is a one woman salon ran by Esmeralda. Booking in advanced is important because it's only her and she is quite popular. However, she was very flexible with me trying to find a time that works best for both of us. She also is very detailed oriented so you might find yourself on her chair for a while, which makes her availability more scarce. However, I find this a strength as I was very happy with my results and felt she really listened to what i wanted and also gave me some really good suggestions. Beauty is Hair Salon is located INSIDE Salon Republic. Basically, it's a huge place in which many stylists rent out an area. They are separated an private so you do feel like you walked into a specific salon. Just don't look for a "Beauty is Hair Salon" when driving because you wont find any. Salon Republic is located on the second floor and it's in the shopping mall as Marshalls. I can't wait to go back! read more
