Visited on a busy Saturday that the Augusta art fair occurred. We were seated in a reasonable amount of time on the upstairs outdoor patio. The patio is covered and has sweeping views of the Ohio river. The restaurant is in a charming brick building that dates from the 1790's. We ordered blackberry bourbon smashes - which were almost too pretty to drink. Served with lime wedges, mint sprigs and an edible viola flower they were also delicious! The hot brown had a wonderful cheese sauce and came in its own little cast iron frying pan. The burger and Parmesan fries were also very good. Our waitress was attentive even though the restaurant was bustling. Two tips I would recommend: 1. Drove 2 hours to stroll thru this river town. So many places to eat. We picked Beehive Tavern. It looked right out on to the Ohio River. We also watched the ferry travel back and forth while we ate. The hot brown was excellent, the sauce was outstanding. We love patronizing establishments the are pet friendly. The smash burger was very good. 2 patties, cheese and dressed. My group stopped here for lunch on a Sunday after visiting the Augusta Distillery down the road. Though we were a large group with no reservation, the team was happy to accommodate us, and we did not wait long to be seated. Almost everyone at the table got a burger besides myself and one other person. I got the salmon sandwich with fries and they got the steak sandwich and fries. Everyone who got the smash burger really enjoyed their meals and left feeling very full. I loved the salmon and thought everything on the sandwich went very well together. It was a good size and everything stayed between the buns, no mess on the plate! Also the fries have a great seasoning on them and are definitely worth the upgrade from the chips. It took a bit for us all to get our meals, but everything came out hot and fresh. All in all it was a great visit and we'd be happy to come back! We took a nice scenic drive along the Ohio river, and found the Beehive in Augusta. We had made reservations in advance, and I am glad that we did. The people behind us trying to get in were rejected due to the fact that they had an overwhelming crowd and some of the items on the menu they were out of, so they were only serving the ones with reservations. read more

Went to the beehive on a Saturday afternoon at 4:15 just wanted to sit at a little table on the patio out front we were just gonna have a glass of beer and a glass of wine. Be there for a half hour and leave. They told us they couldn't sit us till 7 30 because we didn't have a reservation. All the tables were empty except for one outfront. The bar was maybe 20% full and there was plenty of tables inside empty. That's what you call small town charm. The place is historic. It's near the Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) house. The Beehive overlooks the Ohio river which can be traversed to Ohio on the Augusta ferry. The interior is historic looking but yet clean and inviting. We were there for lunch. I had the Kentucky Hot Brown. Hearty and savory are words to describe this stack of turkey, ham, bacon and cheese smothered in gravy, baked in the oven and served in a small skillet. My wife had the Hot Honey Chicken Wrap that features thinly sliced fried chicken drizzled with hot honey and lettuce in a flour tortilla. It came with fries seasoned with sea salt. My parents and I went here for a Thursday evening dinner and we had a great experience. We got the OPP as an appetizer. It was good but all fried. I think we will try something else next time. The rolls were warm and amazing and came with a trio of butter, honey and jam. My father got a Caesar salad and it was some of the best Caesar dressing I have ever tasted! I got the chicken pesto pasta, my mom got the entrée Caesar salad with grilled chicken and my father got the shrimp scampi. All were very well plated, seasoned perfectly and delicious! We all liked what we got and were happy. We got coffee and honey pie for dessert and those were good as well. The service was great and the place was beautiful. This place has to be one of the vibiest places on the Ohio River. Every detail looks carefully curated. Dark & moody with velvet lined bench seats. Live music when we were there but it was in the downstairs bar area. So, after dining we went downstairs and had another drink at the bar and enjoyed the music. Saturday we traveled from Louisville to Augusta to do a bourbon experience at Augusta Distillery. Amazing. We made reservations up the street at the Beehive Augusta Tavern and the person taking phone calls and coordinating reservations was great to work with. The tour went 15 min longer and they were willing to adjust our reservation. We were seated around 5:15 pm and the hostesses and waitress were all so awesome. We decided to get 2 bourbon flights. One was my flight which included an Augusta 10, 13 and 15 year bourbon. The other flight in our party was called Win/Place/show and included 4 roses, basil Hayden and 1792. My flight was $32 and all included 1 oz pours. The other flight was considerably cheaper (for good reason), but the Basil Hayden pour was clearly under 1 oz. We said something to the waitress and she got the manager and the manager old us that all of our bourbons were over poured except for the Basil Hayden. They were all supposed to be 1/2 oz pours. What?!? Seriously? Who does flights with 1/2 oz pours? I asked her why this wasn't mentioned on the menu and told her of the hundreds of bourbon flights I've had over the years and I've never heard of 1/2 oz pours. She said that was their policy. I told her she could go to any restaurant in Louisville and get a flight and it would at least be 1 oz pours. She blew me off as if I had no idea what I was talking about. Instead she said "let me get a 1/2 oz pour of water and if it matches we're good." Well of course it did. I was so embarrassed for the manager. What an absolute joke. Who argues over 1/2 oz of Basil Hayden, a cheap $20 bottle of Jim Beam bourbon that only bourbon beginners enjoy. She could have poured another 1/2 oz of basil Hayden and made us happy and she would have lost less than $1. Instead she wanted to argue with us. This would have never happened in Louisville or any other city with a decent restaurant scene. The owner should be embarrassed by this. Onto the food. The food was fine. Nothing special. Overpriced. The shrimp in my Land and Sea was so salty I had to scrape the extra salt off to make it barely edible. I was afraid to complain given the fact that she wanted to argue over 1/2 oz of cheap Jim beam whiskey. Everything else was fine. Nothing special. We had stuffed mushroom appetizer and my wife had scallops that were also terribly over salted. The friend who had the under poured basil Hayden had salmon and it was nice. Our other friend had gnocchi. It was ok. Nothing special. The people cooking the food were fine other than their heavy hand with salt (and I love salt. Trust me) and the waitress was lovely and attentive. The manager though. Yikes. What a shame. To be that clueless to argue over 1/2 oz of some of the cheapest bourbon money can buy. Again I feel sorry for her. Will we be back? No. I'll be at the Augusta distillery many times but will never eat at this place again thanks to that manager. Do better. We tipped the waitress well because she tried. She really did and again she did a great job for us. Will they care about this review. No. They're probably the "best" restaurant in that podunk little town and not having me come back will be meaningless to them. But beware. There are better options in Covington and Cincinnati and they surely will not argue with you over 1/2 oz of $20 whiskey. read more

We tried to eat here twice--succeeded once. I'll break this review into three parts: food, service, management. This restaurant is located in a tiny riverfront community, Augusta, Kentucky. The decor is sophisticated, especially for such a small place, and has a hip-looking bar. Parking is a little problematic, as you may have to circle the block a couple times to find a space, but no big deal. The first night we went, we managed to get a table. There weren't many people in the restaurant, but you could tell they were significantly understaffed. No worries--we weren't in a hurry. We had three people taking care of us at various intervals, just doing whatever needed to be done. The hostess, maybe a server?, and a woman I perceived to be a manager. They were all nice and attentive as they could be considering the situation. The manager-type woman (blonde lady) was personable, engaging, and when she delivered our drinks, she explained the history and how to consume the cocktail. Overall, service slow, but good, and that's fine! I had the filet, which was mostly medium as I requested. It's a very thick cut, so some was rare. But good char, good flavor, nice accompanying roasted vegetables. My husband had the pea pesto pasta, which was a little overdone, but we also know pasta is tricky, and Al dente isn't always easy or everyone's style. The drink we had was the bee buzz, a fun gin drink that comes with a special flower to cause changes in mouth sensation. Unique and very cool. We had the fried green tomato appetizer, which had good flavor, but I think it was meant to be breaded, and wasn't done quite correctly. Overall the menu is small and good-looking. They have a pork chop, salmon, some salads, and charcuterie. Food wise, I would try again. We came back the next night (it's a small town). We knew something was up because open table had no ability to book a reservation. There was a reservations only sign outside, but I stopped to talk to someone else, also seemingly management, but not the same woman as before. Reception was chillier. She told me they were essentially full because no one wanted to sit outside. She said she could fit us in at 8:30 (it was 7:00). There weren't many people inside. We chose to go somewhere else. After having a full meal, desert, and two cocktails each at Bravo and Bourbon (reviewed separately), we passed back by around 8:30, and the front area was completely empty. We were staying in an air bnb in the area and the proprietor says she never recommends this place because of issues with accessibility and service. We would have been happy to wait and have slow service, but this business lost a bigger check because of their seeming inability to manage a poor staffing situation, which doesn't appear new. I get the difficulties that come along with managing a restaurant, but this could have been handled better. The four star review is based on our first night. Loss of star based on the cool reception of the second night, leaving us feeling our patronage didn't matter. read more

Thie salmon was perfectly done, juicy with a beautifully seared top. The Poppyseed dressing was throughly delectable on this lovely bed of spring greens, candied pecan, goat cheese, blackberries and blueberries! Shannon obligingly made a trip to find out what was on tap, but we ended up with a delicious White Sangria--slices of orange, lemon, strawberry & mint garnishing mango rum, white wine & simple syrup. Very disappointing experience; we drove 45 minutes to see Ricky Nye, only to be told that we could not eat in the bar area on Sat even though there were 3 open tables and we were offering to double or triple the revenue on one of those tables! Instead we were seated in the first floor dining next to a loud group of 7. We waited over 20 minutes for a burger that was overcooked, the risotto was tasteless; $100 including generous tips. Then we had to drive over an hour to get home because the ferry was closed; if we'd been allowed to eat in the bar we probably would've made it. Thanks for ruining the first night out a disabled Vietnam vet and his wife had in a long time (he shattered his humerus a year ago, necessitating four orthopedic surgeries). The Beehive is a regular Date Night place for us. The last 2 visits have not been good at all. The vegan choices have been terrible. Everything is loaded down with pepper, and is almost inedible. I can hardly eat any of the meal. It is always boxed up for me, but as soon as I get home, it gets thrown away. Worked with a friend to organize a day trip to beautiful Augusta, Kentucky, an absolutely charming river town on the Ohio about an hour from Greater Cincinnati. Our first stop was lunch at Beehive Augusta Tavern, a long-established favorite in town. Reservations were easy via the OpenTable app on their website. We chose indoor seating in the event there was rain or unbearable heat but there's a lovely second floor balcony available with fans. We each started with a different cocktail -- I had the Kentucky Lemonade, a super refreshing Bourbon concoction, which set the stage perfectly for a great meal and distillery tour we had booked following lunch. We split an order of the Spinach and Artichoke Dip to start and it's probably the nicest version of this appetizer I've ever had. We had to resist temptation to use our fingers to get every last morsel from the serving dish. There were many tempting choices but I find it hard to resist a Cuban sandwich and that's what I ordered. It was AWESOME, bursting with tender, delicious pork and served with a side of flavorful truffle fries. I loved every minute our time at the Beehive, which is cozy and beautifully decorated. Everyone was very nice. We went on a Sunday afternoon and sat on the porch. They were out of all things bread. No dinner rolls. No croutons for the Caesar salad. We laughed about not being to get a damn carb in that town. I had a NY strip. It was salty as hell and just not a good cut of steak. My wife had the carbonara pasta with shrimp- except it came with chicken. Our friends had salmon and a filet. Everything seemed to be dusted with the same season salt. And it must have been Lawry's or something similarly bad. The place is trying but with a big distillery coming on line in the next year or so they had better get it together. They're only 30 minutes from Cincinnati- where you can eat at some really terrific restaurants. Comparisons will be made. I wish them nothing but good luck! read more

Friendly spot in a cute quaint town. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were so nice, and the owner of the restaurant was behind the bar helping out and chatting with us. She ended up inviting us to a tour of their distillery that was running later that day! We shared a cheese/meat board and had some drinks. I can't remember all the ingredients in the cocktail they made for me, but it included an edible buzz button which was a really fun/funny experience! We enjoyed an early fall Saturday in the Augusta area and wrapped up our day with dinner at the Tavern. I'm so glad I made reservations for the Beehive Augusta Tavern, thanks to a tip from a friend as they only have so many seats and reduced right now due too COVID mandates, so plan ahead an made reservation. As many came up after us wanting to have dinner, but were turned away as the Tavern did not have space for them. Before our reservation, we sat on the first floor and enjoyed a drink for their Honey Hour where they have reduced drink prices. My friend loves her red wine so that's what she enjoyed, but I went with a cocktail The Kentucky Lemonade it was delicious and can't wait to return to try it again. When it was time for our reservation we were seated promptly upstairs and reviewed the menu. Our waiter brought us homemade biscuits we were hungry and everything on the menu sounded good, we ended up going with the Beehive Filet which was grilled just right and so was the asparagus and fingerling potatoes.
